Start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). Capcom’s own 2024 newcomer guide says, “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019).” It is the most balanced entry: a clear police-station-and-Raccoon-City story, modern controls, serious resource pressure and enough action to remain approachable. After it, play Resident Evil 7 biohazard for the most intimate horror, Resident Evil 4 (2023) for a faster cinematic rescue story, Resident Evil Village to continue Ethan Winters’ arc, or the 2002 Resident Evil remake for the classic mansion, puzzles and deliberate inventory management.
The five best choices at a glance
All five games tell self-contained stories, but they prioritize different parts of survival horror. The table shows the practical trade-offs before the detailed recommendations.

| Game | Story and characters | Horror and proximity | Scarcity and exploration | Combat emphasis | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2 (2019) | Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield during the Raccoon City outbreak | High; oppressive spaces and memorable pursuers | High; interconnected police station, sewers and laboratory | Moderate | Most newcomers and the best overall balance |
| Resident Evil 7 biohazard | Ethan Winters searching for his missing wife | Very high; first-person, close-quarters psychological horror | High in the early game, then more linear | Low to moderate | Players who want the scariest, most personal entry |
| Resident Evil 4 (2023) | Leon’s mission to rescue the president’s daughter | Moderate; sustained tension with more spectacle | Moderate; exploration supports a forward-moving campaign | High | Story momentum, set pieces and satisfying combat |
| Resident Evil Village | The next chapter of Ethan Winters’ story after RE7 | High in selected areas, less consistent overall | Moderate; a hub structure with optional detours | High | Players who want to finish Ethan’s narrative |
| Resident Evil (2002 remake) | Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine investigating a mansion incident | High through atmosphere and uncertainty | Very high; fixed routes, puzzles and constrained inventory | Low to moderate | Fans of classic survival-horror design |
The central trade-off is simple: RE7 and RE2 put the most pressure on you, while RE4 and Village trade some scarcity for combat and cinematic momentum. The 2002 remake is the most traditional and least forgiving of modern expectations.

Why it is the default recommendation
Resident Evil 2 (2019) modernizes the original Raccoon City scenario without discarding the series’ survival-horror identity. You arrive as rookie police officer Leon Kennedy or college student Claire Redfield, then navigate a city overwhelmed by an outbreak. Their campaigns overlap but are not identical, giving the story two viewpoints and making a second playthrough meaningful without requiring knowledge of earlier games.
#1 Best Overall
- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Capcom’s official newcomer guide specifically recommends this version for new players. That endorsement fits the design: the opening explains the crisis quickly, the objectives are readable, and modern third-person controls remove much of the friction associated with older entries. You still have to decide whether a room is worth entering, whether to spend ammunition on a hostile creature and which healing item can be spared.
How the survival-horror systems support the story
The police station is both a setting and a puzzle box. Corridors loop back on themselves, locked doors gradually open, and key items occupy valuable inventory slots. The map records doors and objects you have examined, but it does not solve the route for you. That structure makes Leon and Claire feel trapped in a building that was never designed for a siege, while every shortcut you unlock creates a small measure of safety.
Enemies are dangerous without being uniformly lethal. A zombie may absorb several shots, and a headshot is not guaranteed to stop it permanently. The safest solution is often to stagger an enemy, leave the room and return by another route. The game’s most famous pursuer turns familiar hallways into timed decisions: noise, ammunition and the location of your next objective suddenly matter more than perfect aim.
Story strengths and limitations
This is the strongest all-round narrative in the list if you want a disaster story with multiple protagonists, escalating revelations and a sense of place. Leon’s idealism and Claire’s determination provide distinct emotional angles, while the station, underground facilities and laboratory create a clear progression from local crisis to global biohazard.
The campaigns are not a single seamless chronology in the way a television season might be. Some scenario differences and repeated set pieces can feel game-like. That is a reasonable trade for replayability, and it does not prevent a first-time player from following the main plot.
Choose it if
- You want one game that demonstrates what modern Resident Evil does best.
- You prefer third-person exploration to first-person immersion.
- You want meaningful scarcity but do not want the rigid controls of a 1990s game.
- You are deciding what to play before any other entry.
2. Resident Evil 7 biohazard: the most intimate and frightening story
What makes the perspective matter
Resident Evil 7 biohazard shifts to first person and follows Ethan Winters as he searches for his missing wife, Mia. The perspective keeps threats close to the camera and limits what you can see around corners, which makes ordinary actions—opening a cupboard, checking a hallway or walking through a doorway—feel dangerous. The story begins as a personal search rather than a police or military operation, so the horror stays grounded in Ethan’s confusion and isolation.
This is the best choice when “scariest” means sustained proximity rather than the largest number of enemies. The early Baker property section uses sound, cramped architecture and unpredictable pursuit more than constant combat. You learn the layout while trying not to be noticed, then revisit spaces after finding a key or solving a mechanism. The result is a strong sense that the house is watching your progress.

Resource pressure and pacing
Ammunition, healing supplies and inventory space are limited enough to make every encounter a calculation. The game does give you weapons and opportunities to fight back, but the emotional rhythm is built around avoidance, investigation and short bursts of violence. Later chapters become more conventional and combat-focused than the opening, so the intensity is not perfectly uniform.
That change of pace serves the narrative. Ethan moves from a private nightmare into a wider bioweapon incident, and the game gradually reveals how the personal and institutional parts of the story connect. Some players prefer the first half’s oppressive uncertainty; others appreciate the increased agency later.

Why it should come before Village
Resident Evil Village is a direct sequel to RE7 and continues Ethan Winters’ story. Playing RE7 first gives emotional context to Ethan, Mia and the consequences of the Baker incident. You can understand Village on its own, but the character decisions and revelations have more weight in release order.
Choose it if
- You want first-person, close-quarters psychological horror.
- You value atmosphere and vulnerability over elaborate combat systems.
- You are comfortable with disturbing imagery and a more personal premise.
- You plan to play Village afterward.
3. Resident Evil 4 (2023): the best story-driven action-horror balance
The mission and the remake’s approach
Resident Evil 4 (2023) follows Leon Kennedy on a mission to rescue the president’s daughter. PlayStation’s official description identifies that rescue as the campaign’s central objective, while Capcom describes the remake as a reworked version of the original story and gameplay rather than a simple visual update.

The result is more action-oriented than RE2 or RE7. Leon can move while aiming, parry certain attacks, upgrade weapons and carry a larger combat toolkit. Encounters are designed around positioning, crowd control and fast decisions. You still search rooms, solve environmental puzzles and manage ammunition, but the game more often expects you to fight through a situation rather than slip past it.
How much horror remains?
The remake retains horror through hostile environments, body transformation, darkness and sudden changes in threat. Its tension comes from escalation: a quiet approach becomes a village assault, a rescue operation becomes a siege, and familiar enemies evolve into more dangerous forms. Because Leon is more capable, the fear is less about helplessness and more about being overwhelmed.
If you want a story that constantly moves forward, this is the strongest pick. Leon’s mission gives every chapter a clear objective, and the campaign’s set pieces provide frequent narrative payoffs. The cost is reduced scarcity. You will usually have more options in a fight than Ethan has in RE7, and the game’s economy rewards active engagement.
Story continuity and accessibility
You do not need to play the 2005 original to understand the remake. Leon’s history and the broader series context add texture, but the remake introduces its immediate conflict clearly. It is also a good second game after RE2, because Leon’s presence and development feel like a continuation without requiring a strict chronology.

- You enjoy upgrading weapons and mastering combat encounters.
- You prefer action-horror to prolonged helplessness.
- You have already played RE2 and want to see Leon in a more capable role.
4. Resident Evil Village: continue Ethan’s story with more action
Where it fits in the series
Capcom calls Resident Evil Village the eighth main title and the sequel to Resident Evil 7 biohazard. It picks up Ethan Winters’ story and expands the setting from a single isolated property to a larger European village surrounded by distinct territories. The narrative is built around Ethan’s attempt to recover his family, so the personal stakes established in RE7 remain central.
A broader, more varied campaign
The village acts as a hub. You return to it after visiting major locations, open new paths with key items and can discover optional treasures or side areas. Each principal location has its own tone: one may emphasize pursuit and vulnerability, another environmental puzzles, and another sustained combat. This variety gives Village a more adventurous shape than RE7.
Capcom has also said that Village has a higher degree of action than its predecessor. That is apparent in the ammunition supply, enemy encounters and weapon upgrades. Horror remains prominent in selected sequences, but the entire game does not maintain RE7’s claustrophobic pressure. Think of it as a story-driven action-horror sequel that periodically returns to survival-horror intensity.

Should you play it before or after RE7?
Play RE7 first if you care about Ethan’s arc, the relationship at the center of the story and the significance of the sequel’s opening events. Starting with Village is possible if you prioritize a larger, more combat-heavy adventure, but it removes much of the dramatic buildup.

5. Resident Evil (2002): the purest classic survival-horror choice
What the remake preserves
The 2002 remake of the original Resident Evil returns to the mansion format that defined the series: a small cast, an isolated location, locked rooms, layered puzzles and a limited inventory. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine investigate a disturbing incident and gradually uncover the biological cause behind it. The story is compact, but the mansion’s layout makes every discovery feel consequential.
The original 1996 release established the franchise’s genre-defining survival-horror setting. The remake preserves that historical identity while adding updated environments, character details and threats. Its fixed camera angles and deliberate movement can feel unfamiliar to players raised on modern third-person controls, yet those constraints are part of the design. You cannot simply swing the camera around a corner to remove uncertainty.
Why resource management is the main event
Inventory slots are scarce, storage boxes are placed strategically and ammunition is never an invitation to eliminate everything. You must decide which keys and puzzle items to carry, which rooms can be safely revisited and whether a defeated enemy should be burned or left where it fell. Backtracking is not filler; it is the way the mansion’s geography becomes understandable.
The game rewards note-taking and patience. A locked door may require an item found several rooms away, and a puzzle solution may be hinted at by a painting, inscription or environmental pattern. If you prefer explicit objectives and constant checkpoints, this entry will feel old-fashioned. If you enjoy methodical exploration, it remains one of the clearest expressions of survival-horror fundamentals.
Availability caveat
Current official sources do not provide a complete storefront listing for every platform. Check the store for your region and the edition available on your system before assuming that a particular version is sold digitally.
Choose it if
- You want mansion exploration, puzzles and strict inventory decisions.
- You are interested in the series’ foundational design rather than modern pacing.
- You are willing to learn fixed-camera movement and deliberate controls.
- You want the most concentrated classic survival-horror experience in this list.

Current editions and buying considerations
Official bundles and editions
Official purchase paths currently include the PlayStation Resident Evil Remake Trilogy, which contains Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, and Capcom store listings for Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition and Resident Evil Village Gold Edition. Edition contents, regional availability, price, stock and supported platforms can change, so verify those details on the store page for your country before buying.
A Gold or Deluxe label does not automatically mean the same content across games. Read the included-games and downloadable-content list, especially when a bundle offers a base game plus expansions or cosmetic items. If you only want the main story, the standard edition may be sufficient; if you want the complete narrative package, compare the included story expansions before checkout.
Platform expectations
The modern remakes and Ethan Winters games have had different platform releases and edition names over time. Do not assume that a bundle listed on one console storefront is available on another, or that save data transfers between generations. Confirm the exact platform, generation, language support and performance mode shown by the retailer in your region.
How the series’ history explains these differences
Capcom’s Integrated Report 2025 records more than 15 million cumulative units sold for both Resident Evil 7 biohazard and Resident Evil 2, more than 11 million for Resident Evil Village and more than 10 million for Resident Evil 3. These are cumulative company figures, not a comparison of current sales or a guarantee of equal availability on every platform.

Capcom describes the franchise as combining a distinctive worldview with gameplay action that has captured users around the globe. You can see that evolution in the five recommendations: the mansion remake emphasizes limited information and inventory, RE2 modernizes that formula, RE7 intensifies proximity through first person, and RE4 and Village increase combat and spectacle while retaining horror set pieces.
Capcom announced February 27, 2026 as the release date for Resident Evil Requiem, identified as the ninth main installment. Its existence does not change the self-contained value of the five games above; start with the entry whose tone you prefer rather than trying to catch up with every numbered title.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with the most action-heavy game when you want survival horror. RE4 (2023) is excellent, but its combat rhythm is not representative of the series’ most resource-starved entries.
- Skipping RE7 before Village if Ethan’s story matters. The sequel’s emotional context is stronger in release order.
- Expecting the 2002 remake to control like a modern third-person game. Its fixed cameras and deliberate movement are intentional constraints.
- Using ammunition on every enemy. In RE2, RE7 and the 2002 remake, avoidance and route planning often preserve more resources than complete extermination.
- Buying a bundle without checking contents. Edition names, downloadable content and platform support vary by region and storefront.
Final recommendation
Choose Resident Evil 2 (2019) if you want one answer: it is the clearest newcomer gateway and the strongest balance of story, exploration, horror and modern playability. Choose Resident Evil 7 biohazard when fear and intimacy matter more than combat, then continue directly into Resident Evil Village. Choose Resident Evil 4 (2023) when you want Leon’s rescue mission and a more action-led cinematic campaign. Choose the 2002 remake when your ideal Resident Evil is a mansion, a map full of locked doors and every bullet treated as a decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play the original 1996 Resident Evil before the 2002 remake?
No. The 2002 remake retells the mansion incident with updated presentation and additional detail. The original is historically important, but it is not a prerequisite for understanding the remake or the later games.
Is Resident Evil 4 (2023) more action than horror?
Yes. It retains horror atmosphere and dangerous enemies, but its design emphasizes weapon upgrades, crowd fights, parries and cinematic momentum more than sustained scarcity.
Can I play Resident Evil Village without Resident Evil 7?
You can follow the broad events, but Village is a direct sequel and assumes knowledge of Ethan Winters, Mia and the Baker incident. Playing Resident Evil 7 first provides the intended character context.
Which game is least suitable for someone who dislikes backtracking?
The 2002 remake relies most heavily on revisiting rooms, carrying puzzle items and opening shortcuts through the mansion. Resident Evil 4 (2023) is the most forward-moving alternative.
