The best Resident Evil games for two people playing locally on one PC are Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6, and Resident Evil Revelations 2. Capcom’s February 27, 2023 update confirms local split-screen for the PC version of Resident Evil 5. Steam lists shared or split-screen co-op for Resident Evil 6 and Resident Evil Revelations 2. Revelations 2 has the clearest documented setup: connect two controllers, start STORY or RAID, and press START on the second controller.

These are the verified PC couch-co-op choices. They are not evidence that every Resident Evil release supports local multiplayer. Your best pick depends on whether you want a straightforward campaign, several intertwined campaigns, or a story mode plus a separate RAID mode.

Which Resident Evil games have local co-op on PC?

The supported shortlist is three games:

  • Resident Evil 5: local split-screen co-op is supported on PC according to Capcom’s February 27, 2023 Steam update.
  • Resident Evil 6: Steam lists shared or split-screen co-op and describes two-player co-op both offline and online. Ada Wong’s campaign remains single-player only.
  • Resident Evil Revelations 2: Steam lists shared or split-screen co-op, while Capcom documents split-screen for both STORY and RAID on PC.

If a different Resident Evil game is not on this list, do not assume that its franchise association means it has couch co-op. The evidence here verifies these three PC releases only.

Quick comparison

Game PC local-play evidence Best fit Important limitation
Resident Evil 5 Capcom’s February 27, 2023 update says the PC version supports local split-screen co-op. A direct two-player campaign experience built around the main game. An older Capcom FAQ said offline split-screen was unsupported; the later dated update supersedes that information for the current PC feature status.
Resident Evil 6 Steam lists shared or split-screen co-op and two-player offline or online co-op. Players who want several character campaigns and a broad action-oriented co-op structure. Ada Wong’s campaign is one-player only.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 Steam lists shared or split-screen co-op. Capcom provides PC instructions for STORY and RAID. Pairs who want campaign co-op plus a separate RAID mode. Use two controllers. RAID split-screen can be started only when the players are at the base.

Choose among them using three practical questions: do you want the main story or an additional mode, how much setup friction can you accept, and what kind of pacing does your pair enjoy? The first two questions are established by the documented modes and instructions. Horror intensity and pacing are matters of personal taste rather than a measured ranking in the PC co-op listings.

#1 Best Overall
Resident Evil 5 - PC
  • Fans that pick up the PC version will be the first to experience stereoscopic 3D out of screen effects as their living rooms are transformed into the world of Kijuju. (wireless 3D Vision glasses sold separately)
  • Chris Redfield, protagonist of the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Code Veronica, returns and is joined by new playable character Sheva Alomar, an African BSAA agent tasked with investigating the epidemic.
  • New cooperatively-focused gameplay revolutionizes the way that Resident Evil is played. Chris and Sheva must work together to survive new challenges and fight dangerous hordes of enemies.
  • Features groundbreaking graphics that utilize an advanced version of Capcom’s proprietary game engine, MT Framework, which powered the hit titles Devil May Cry 4, Lost Planet and Dead Rising.
  • Improved inventory system allows items to be traded between characters. To add to the intensity, all inventory management is done in real time; items can even be assigned to the directional pad for instant access.

Resident Evil 5: the straightforward campaign pick

Resident Evil 5 is the simplest recommendation when two people want to sit at one PC and play through the principal campaign together. Capcom’s February 27, 2023 Steam announcement explicitly states that the PC version “will support local split screen co-op.” That dated announcement is the current reference to use when older forum posts or support pages claim otherwise.

Why choose Resident Evil 5

  • Its local-play feature is directly confirmed by Capcom rather than inferred from a community workaround.
  • The recommendation is focused on the main game, so it suits players who want to begin a campaign together without selecting a separate multiplayer mode first.
  • It is the clearest choice when your priority is a conventional two-player Resident Evil campaign on one screen.
  • It avoids the specific campaign exception that complicates Resident Evil 6, since the documented comparison does not identify a solo-only campaign in RE5.

The historical information conflict

An older Capcom PC FAQ for the Steam version stated that offline split-screen co-op was not supported. Capcom later published the February 27, 2023 update announcing local split-screen support. Those statements describe different points in the product’s history; they should not be treated as an unresolved contradiction. For a current PC purchase or installation, use the later dated update as the feature-status reference, while recognizing that old guides may still quote the superseded FAQ.

What the feature confirmation does not establish

The Capcom announcement confirms local play, but it does not provide performance benchmarks, a universal controller-compatibility list, current pricing, or a guarantee for every adapter and input configuration. Plan around two PC-compatible controllers and check the current store listing and system information before buying.

Resident Evil 6: the broadest campaign structure

Steam describes Resident Evil 6 as supporting shared or split-screen co-op and says two-player co-op is available offline or online. That makes it a valid couch-co-op choice when both players want a larger campaign structure with multiple character perspectives.

Why choose Resident Evil 6

  • It supports two-player local play without requiring an online session.
  • Its intertwined character campaigns give a pair more than one storyline to work through.
  • The shared/split-screen listing makes the local feature visible in the PC store description rather than leaving players to infer it.
  • The offline and online wording gives you flexibility: the same title can support a shared-room session or a remote session, subject to the game’s current setup.

The Ada Wong exception

Ada Wong’s campaign is explicitly one-player only. If your plan is to play every campaign side by side, account for that exception: the two-player local feature applies to the supported co-op portions, not Ada’s solo campaign. This is the most important mode restriction to know before selecting Resident Evil 6 for a two-person playthrough.

When it is a better fit than Resident Evil 5

Pick Resident Evil 6 if variety across campaigns matters more than having the most direct, single-campaign recommendation. Pick Resident Evil 5 if your group wants a simpler decision and a focused main-story run. That is a play-style recommendation, not a claim that one game has objectively better horror, controls, or performance; the documented PC listings do not establish those comparisons.

Resident Evil Revelations 2: story co-op plus RAID

Revelations 2 is the most clearly documented option for setting up local play on PC. Steam lists shared or split-screen co-op, and Capcom’s PC support instructions specify both STORY and RAID modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why choose Revelations 2

  • You can use split-screen in the STORY mode for campaign play.
  • You can also use split-screen in RAID, giving the pair a separate mode in addition to the story.
  • Capcom publishes an explicit two-controller procedure, which makes the initial setup easier to verify.
  • The mode choice lets you switch between a narrative session and a separate activity without buying a second game.

How to start split-screen in Revelations 2 on PC

  1. Connect two controllers to the PC. Capcom’s instructions describe two controllers as the required setup for the documented method.
  2. Launch Resident Evil Revelations 2 from the Steam Library.
  3. Start either STORY or RAID.
  4. Press START on the second player’s controller to join.
  5. If you are starting RAID split-screen, make sure the players are at the base. Capcom specifies that RAID split-screen can be started only from that location.

The instructions establish the controller requirement and the supported modes, but they do not certify every controller, adapter, or unusual input configuration. If you are assembling a setup specifically for couch co-op, use two PC-compatible controllers and confirm that the game recognizes both before beginning a long session.

Rank #2
Resident Evil 6 - Xbox One
  • Starting with four distinct, yet interwoven story threads, for either solo or co-op play, both offline and online, not only does Resident Evil 6 deliver both different perspectives and gameplay styles
  • Ada Wong, Resident Evil's very own femme fatale, dives into a thrilling campaign of intrigue and infiltration, featuring unique missions, gameplay and weapons. Ada is available from the start
  • The most expansive Resident Evil game to date- Experience the horror through four distinct yet intertwined campaigns
  • Solo or co-op - Resident Evil 6 delivers both single and two player co-op gameplay either offline or online
  • Includes all the available DLC content from Resident Evil 6: Siege Mode, Predator Mode, Survivor Mode, Onslaught Mode, The Mercenaries maps, ResidentEvil.net costumes

RAID’s base requirement

The base condition is easy to mistake for a controller problem. If both controllers are connected but the second player cannot start RAID split-screen, return to the base and try the join action there. The restriction applies to where RAID split-screen can be initiated; it is not described as a ban on the mode itself.

Story mode versus extra-mode priorities

For a pair that wants to complete a campaign together, RE5 and RE6 provide the most direct starting points in this comparison, while Revelations 2 also offers STORY co-op. If you specifically want repeatable sessions outside the story, Revelations 2 is the only title in the verified shortlist whose PC instructions explicitly name a second co-op mode: RAID.

That distinction matters when deciding what you are paying for. A game selected only for a one-time campaign run has a different value proposition from one you expect to revisit in RAID. No current prices are established here, so compare the live Steam listings rather than relying on an old sale price or a forum recommendation.

Which game should you pick?

Choose Resident Evil 5 if you want the simplest answer

Resident Evil 5 is the best fit for a pair asking, “Can we play the main Resident Evil campaign together locally?” The current Capcom update confirms the feature directly, and the recommendation does not depend on a special secondary mode.

Choose Resident Evil 6 if campaign variety matters most

Resident Evil 6 is the better fit when your group wants several character campaigns and the option of offline or online two-player co-op. Remember that Ada Wong’s campaign is single-player only.

Choose Revelations 2 if you want story and an extra mode

Revelations 2 is the strongest choice when you want both a co-op story and a separate RAID activity. It has the clearest documented setup, but you need two controllers and must begin RAID split-screen at the base.

Use pacing as a personal tie-breaker

The PC listings and support instructions do not provide a defensible, measured ranking of horror intensity or pacing. You can still use your own preference: choose the game your pair expects to enjoy, but treat that as subjective editorial judgment rather than an official specification.

PC couch-co-op setup checklist

Before launching any of the three games, use this checklist to avoid the most common setup mistakes:

Rank #3
Capcom Resident Evil Village Gold Edition (PS5)
  • A New Perspective – See the eighth core entry in the Resident Evil series from a new vantage point in “Third Person Mode.” In addition to the intense first-person view players enjoyed in the initial release of Resident Evil Village, they can now watch Ethan in action and experience his journey from a new angle in Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion.
  • Bonus Game – Resident Evil Village will provide access to a free multiplayer experience titled Resident Evil Re:Verse, which releases on Oct. 28, 2022 alongside the launch of Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion. An all-star cast of iconic characters face off in four to six-player deathmatch battles in classic locations.
  • Evolution of Combat – In addition to engaging enemies, in Resident Evil Village Ethan can guard against incoming assaults, or kick foes away to buy time, allowing players to strategize the best approach for surviving the challenges ahead.
  • Popular Features Return – Recognizable features return Resident Evil Village that nod to previous Resident Evil titles, such as “The Duke,” a merchant who allows players to buy and sell items, purchase recipes for crafting, and customize weapons.
  • The Story Continues – “Shadows of Rose” resumes the Winters family saga 16 years after the events of Resident Evil Village. The expansion’s new tale follows Rose Winters, the daughter of main protagonist Ethan, as she struggles with her terrifying powers. Explore the warped and twisted world inside the consciousness of the Megamycete in search of a cure.
  • Confirm the edition: verify that you are using the PC/Steam version discussed by the relevant source.
  • Prepare two controllers: this is explicitly required by Capcom’s documented Revelations 2 procedure and is the practical input arrangement for a two-player local session.
  • Budget for the accessories: the documented requirement is a category—two PC-compatible controllers—not a particular brand or model. Check the current prices yourself because no reliable price is established here.
  • Connect both before launching the mode: the Revelations 2 instructions begin with both controllers connected to the PC.
  • Start the correct mode: in Revelations 2, choose STORY or RAID before the second player presses START.
  • For RAID, go to the base first: the split-screen join can be initiated there.
  • Check the game’s current store and support information: prices, availability, updates, and hardware compatibility can change, and the documented feature notes do not establish current commercial terms.
  • Test both inputs early: a short menu test is safer than discovering an unrecognized controller after starting a long campaign session.

Troubleshooting local play

The second player cannot join in Revelations 2

  1. Confirm that two controllers are connected to the PC.
  2. Launch the game from the Steam Library and enter STORY or RAID.
  3. Press START on the second controller, not the keyboard.
  4. If the mode is RAID, move to the base before trying again.
  5. If the controllers still are not recognized, check the controller and adapter configuration against the game’s current support information. Capcom’s instructions do not guarantee every hardware combination.

An old guide says Resident Evil 5 has no split-screen

Check the publication date. The older Capcom FAQ documented the previous limitation, while Capcom’s February 27, 2023 update announced local split-screen support for the PC version. The dated update is the relevant current-status reference.

You expected every campaign to support two players in Resident Evil 6

Review the campaign selection. Ada Wong’s campaign is specifically identified as one-player only; the presence of local co-op elsewhere in the game does not remove that exception.

You are looking for a keyboard-and-controller arrangement

The documented Revelations 2 procedure specifies two controllers. It does not establish that one player can use a keyboard while the other uses a controller, nor that every adapter or remapping layer will work. Treat two PC-compatible controllers as the supported planning assumption unless the current game documentation says otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are deciding between offline and online play in RE6

Steam’s listing describes two-player co-op as available offline or online. For a same-room session, select the local or split-screen option; an internet connection is not presented as a requirement for the offline mode in that listing.

What is not established about Resident Evil PC couch co-op

The verified information supports feature selection and basic setup, not a full hardware-buying guide or performance review. It does not establish current prices, minimum or recommended PC specifications, frame-rate results, universal controller compatibility, or a definitive ranking by scariness or quality. Those details can vary by edition, update, storefront, and hardware and should be checked separately at the time you purchase or install.

It is also important not to generalize from these three games to the entire series. The evidence verifies Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6, and Resident Evil Revelations 2 for local PC play; it does not verify local multiplayer for newer or otherwise unlisted entries.

Bottom-line recommendation

Start with Resident Evil 5 for the most direct two-player campaign recommendation, choose Resident Evil 6 for multiple campaigns with one clearly solo exception, and choose Resident Evil Revelations 2 when you want story co-op plus RAID and are prepared to connect two controllers. For Revelations 2, the reliable sequence is: connect both controllers, launch from Steam, enter STORY or RAID, and press START on player two’s controller; begin RAID from the base.
