There is no verified standalone replacement-battery cartridge for the shipping Steam Frame audio strap. The strap uses an integrated rechargeable Li-ion pack, so the practical purchase today is a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) power bank connected to the headset’s rear USB-C port. Valve is developing a separate replacement strap with a hot-swappable battery and premium Index-style off-ear audio, but its price, capacity, release date, and retail listing have not been published.
The short answer: what you can buy now
The current Steam Frame strap is not documented as accepting a user-installable battery module. Valve’s specifications describe a rechargeable 21.6 Wh Li-ion battery built into the rear strap, while PC Gamer describes the same hardware as a 21 Wh model. That small difference is best treated as a rounding or source-label difference, not as two different batteries.
The rear of the strap has a USB-C 2.0 port and the headset supports charging of up to 45 W. A USB-C PD power bank with a clearly stated 45 W output profile is therefore the supported, low-risk way to add runtime. It is an external supplemental power source, not a replacement for the internal cell.
| Option | Availability | What it does | Installation and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB-C PD power bank | Available now as a general accessory | Supplies supplemental power through the rear USB-C port | External cable and a carried battery; no headset disassembly |
| Standalone internal replacement cell | No verified SKU identified | Would replace the integrated strap battery | Part number, dimensions, connector, capacity, seller, and authorization are not established |
| Valve replacement strap | Coming later; not listed for sale in the cited announcement | Purpose-built strap with a hot-swappable battery and Index-style off-ear audio | Expected to replace the existing strap, but price, timing, capacity, and warranty details are unknown |
What battery is inside the shipping Steam Frame strap?
Integrated rechargeable Li-ion pack
Valve’s official Steam Frame page lists a rechargeable 21.6 Wh Li-ion battery in the rear headstrap. PC Gamer reports it as a 21 Wh model. Because the two figures are close and come from different descriptions of the same product, use “21–21.6 Wh-class” when comparing the strap with external batteries. Do not convert that figure to a claimed runtime: runtime depends on display settings, wireless activity, software, and how the headset is used.
#1 Best Overall
- ✅【COMPATIBLE MODEL & WHAT IT FIXES】: Engineered as an internal battery replacement for Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2 VR only. Solves the most common Quest 2 power failures—headset won't charge past ~55%, shuts down mid-session, dies completely, or refuses to boot. Verify your model before ordering.
- 🔋【3.85V 3640mAh — SPEC-MATCHED FORM FACTOR】: Rate capacity ~13.9Wh. Built with fresh-date Grade-A Battery cells sized to fit the original battery bay—no bulging, no forcing the front cover back on, no external straps or dangling USB cables. Restores per-charge runtime closer to when your headset was new.
- 🛡️【BUILT-IN SAFETY & MULTI-STAGE QC】: Protection PCB integrates overcharge, over-discharge, over-current, over-temperature & short-circuit safeguards. Every battery is functionally tested before shipment for correct voltage, connector alignment, and stable charge/discharge behavior—so it plays nice with Quest 2's power management.
- 🔧【INCLUDES TOOLS (READ BEFORE YOU BUY)】: Comes with the precision Screwdriver, pry tools needed to access the bay. Fair warning: the battery sits above the screen/lens assemblyand requires significant disassembly (ribbon/ZIF handling, multiple screw types). This is NOT plug-and-play — moderate DIY skill recommended.
- 💬【SELLER SUPPORT — WE BACK WHAT WE SHIP】: If your pack arrives with a bent connector, doesn't seat properly, or you hit a snag during install, contact us through Amazon Buyer-Seller Messaging. We'll troubleshoot step-by-step or arrange a replacement—your VR time matters.
Audio hardware is part of the strap
The shipping strap also contains integrated dual audio drivers. That matters when shopping for a replacement: the strap is not merely a belt holding a removable battery. A substitute cell would have to match the electrical, mechanical, thermal, and charging requirements of the complete strap assembly.
Modular does not mean battery-cartridge compatible
The strap is a modular headset component, but the cited Valve materials do not identify a retail, drop-in battery cartridge for the shipping version. “Modular” describes how the strap attaches to the headset; it is not confirmation that the battery pack can be removed and swapped by the owner.
The best current purchase: a 45 W USB-C PD power bank
Why this is the practical match
The headset charges through its rear USB-C port and is specified for charging up to 45 W. PC Gamer explicitly describes using an external power bank through that port to improve battery life. Look for a bank whose USB-C output profile is explicitly rated at 45 W, rather than relying on a vague “fast charge” label. Also verify that the port you plan to use is the output port; many banks have separate input-only USB-C sockets.

- ✅【Designed Exclusively for Meta Quest 3】: Engineered as a compatible internal battery replacement for Meta Quest 3 (128GB / 512GB). Resolves common issues including unexpected shutdowns, failure to charge past 50%, swollen batteries, or no-power conditions. Please verify your model before ordering.
- 🔋【Upgraded 4670mAh High-Density Cells】: Rated 3.87V ~18.1Wh. Built with premium Grade-A Battery cells to deliver extended runtime. Designed to fit the factory battery location without forcing or deforming the headset housing. Restores reliable power for longer VR sessions.
- 🛡️【Multi-Protection Safety Circuitry】: Integrated PCB safeguards against overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, overheating, and short circuits. Every unit is function-tested prior to shipment to ensure stable voltage output and proper connector alignment with Quest 3 power management.
- 🔧【Advanced Installation Required】: This is not a plug-and-play upgrade. Battery replacement requires full disassembly, adhesive removal, and careful handling of ribbon cables. Specialized tools are included. We recommend reviewing a teardown guide before purchase. Experienced users only.
- 💬【Dedicated Customer Support】: If you encounter fitment issues, charging irregularities, or need installation guidance, contact us through Amazon Buyer-Seller Messaging. Our team will assist promptly to ensure a successful repair and a positive ownership experience.
Search terms such as “45W USB-C PD power bank for Steam Frame” describe the right accessory category. They do not identify a Valve-made battery, and a listing that claims to be an internal Steam Frame replacement should be treated skeptically unless Valve publishes an official part number.
What to check on the specification label
- USB-C PD output: The bank should state a 45 W USB-C output profile or otherwise document the profiles it supports.
- Energy capacity: Choose the capacity according to the extra play time and weight you can carry. A higher watt-hour rating generally means a larger, heavier bank; no source establishes a guaranteed Steam Frame runtime per capacity.
- Output stability: Prefer a reputable bank with documented protection against over-current, over-voltage, overheating, and short circuits.
- Cable suitability: Use a sound USB-C cable and inspect its connectors. Confirm that it supports the power level advertised by the bank; do not assume every USB-C cable has identical capabilities.
- Physical design: A compact bank with a secure USB-C socket is easier to carry than a large model that pulls on the rear strap.
- Port behavior: If the bank has several outputs, read its manual. Some banks reduce output or disable one port when multiple devices are connected.
How to extend Steam Frame battery life with an external bank
- Confirm the accessory type. Select a USB-C PD power bank with a documented 45 W output profile. Do not buy a bare Li-ion cell, an unmarked pack, or a listing that provides no electrical specifications.
- Charge the power bank first. Bring the bank to the charge level you need before connecting it to the headset. A bank that is nearly empty may stop supplying power under load.
- Identify the headset’s rear USB-C port. The Steam Frame specification identifies this as a USB-C 2.0 port. Connect the cable to that port, not to an unrelated accessory or a port marked input-only on the power bank.
- Connect the bank with the headset stationary. Plug in the cable, then place the bank in a pocket, pouch, or other secure location that does not tug on the strap or interfere with movement.
- Check the charging indicator. Use the headset’s normal charging indication to verify that power is being accepted. If the indicator does not appear, disconnect and work through the troubleshooting steps below rather than repeatedly forcing the connector.
- Monitor heat and cable strain. Stop using the setup if the bank, connector, or cable becomes unusually hot, smells abnormal, swells, or repeatedly disconnects. A warm device during charging can be normal; excessive heat is not.
- Disconnect before storage or transport. Remove the cable when you finish, especially if the bank could be pressed against the connector in a bag.
This arrangement adds runtime by supplying power externally. It does not increase the capacity of the integrated strap battery, turn the strap into a hot-swappable system, or create a manufacturer-approved internal replacement.
Why an unverified internal replacement cell is a poor buy
No cited source provides an authorized replacement-cell part number, physical dimensions, connector, capacity, charging specification, or approved seller for the shipping strap. Without those details, a battery advertised as “for Steam Frame” cannot be verified as electrically or mechanically compatible.

PC Gamer notes that a qualified battery technician could potentially replace cells. That is repair information, not evidence that a consumer replacement battery is available. Opening a lithium-battery assembly can damage the strap, compromise insulation or thermal protection, and create fire or injury hazards. Unless Valve publishes a service procedure and matching part, do not treat a generic Li-ion pouch or cylindrical cell as a drop-in solution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Do not open the strap solely to measure or replace its cell.
- Do not splice a connector from an unrelated battery pack.
- Do not rely on nominal voltage or watt-hours alone; connector pinout, charging controls, physical fit, and protection circuitry also matter.
- If the installed battery is swollen, leaking, punctured, unusually hot, or damaged, stop using the headset and seek qualified service rather than charging it.
Choosing capacity without making an unsupported runtime promise
The strap’s 21–21.6 Wh-class figure gives you a useful scale for comparing battery labels, but it does not predict how long a particular power bank will run the headset. Power banks state a nominal cell capacity, while usable energy at the USB-C output is lower after conversion losses. Steam Frame power draw also changes with workload and settings.
| Your priority | Selection approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lightest setup | Choose the smallest bank that still documents the required USB-C PD output | Less stored energy and fewer hours of supplemental use |
| Longest practical extension | Choose a higher-capacity bank while retaining the documented 45 W output profile | More weight, bulk, and cable management |
| Travel or commuting | Favor a compact, protected design with a secure port and a cable you can replace | May cost more or provide less capacity than a large desk-oriented bank |
| Emergency backup | Carry a fully charged bank and a known-good USB-C cable | It is still an external workaround, not a spare strap battery |
Because no official conversion factor or headset runtime test is supplied, avoid advertisements that promise a specific number of extra hours from a given bank. Treat those figures as vendor claims unless they identify the test conditions and Steam Frame configuration.

Troubleshooting a power bank that does not charge the headset
No charging indication
- Confirm that the cable is connected to the bank’s USB-C output, not its input port.
- Try a different known-good USB-C cable.
- Check the bank’s manual for a power button or low-current shutdown mode.
- Verify that the bank is charged and that its USB-C port advertises PD output rather than USB-C input only.
- Disconnect other devices from the bank, since multi-port use can change its output behavior.
Charging starts and stops
- Look for a loose connector or cable strain caused by the bank’s position.
- Move the bank so the cable runs freely behind the headset.
- Check whether the bank is overheating or entering a protection state.
- Test the headset with a direct charger that meets its normal requirements to separate a bank problem from a headset-port problem.
The bank or connector becomes very hot
Stop charging and disconnect the setup. Allow the equipment to cool on a nonflammable surface. Do not continue testing a bank that is swollen, damaged, produces an odor, or repeatedly trips its protection circuit.

Valve is developing a first-party strap that replaces the existing strap, adds a hot-swappable battery, and provides premium Index-style off-ear audio. That design would address the limitation of the current integrated pack more directly than an external bank: the battery could be exchanged without carrying a separate power source, and the audio hardware would be purpose-built into the replacement strap.

Until Valve publishes an official Steam Store listing or equivalent product documentation, regard this strap as a watchlist item rather than a battery you can order. Do not infer its capacity, price, connector, or launch timing from the current strap or from third-party speculation.
Which option should you choose?
- You need more play time now: Buy a USB-C PD power bank with a documented 45 W output profile and use it through the rear USB-C port.
- You want a clean, integrated solution: Wait for Valve’s replacement strap and verify the official listing, compatibility, price, capacity, and warranty when published.
- Your current strap battery is failing: Check for official support or qualified repair service. There is no verified consumer replacement-cell SKU in the available documentation.
- You found a cheap “replacement battery” online: Do not assume compatibility from the product title. Require an identifiable part number and manufacturer documentation before considering it.
Bottom line
The shipping Steam Frame deluxe audio strap has an integrated rechargeable 21–21.6 Wh-class Li-ion battery and no verified drop-in replacement battery for sale. A properly specified 45 W USB-C PD power bank is the practical way to supplement charging today. Valve’s planned replacement strap, with a hot-swappable battery and Index-style off-ear audio, is the option to watch—but its price, capacity, release date, and retail availability are still unresolved.
