Arma 3 is the best overall choice if you want the broadest military simulation, while Ready or Not is the strongest solo-friendly close-quarters option. Choose Squad for organized 100-player teamwork, GROUND BRANCH for highly configurable small-unit tactics, Six Days in Fallujah for historically grounded urban combat, Insurgency: Sandstorm for lethal infantry action without full milsim complexity, and Hell Let Loose for large-scale World War II combined arms.

“Realistic” does not mean one thing in shooters. These games model different parts of combat: ballistics and logistics, room-clearing procedure, communication, historical context, or weapon handling. The right pick depends on whether you mainly play alone, with a small co-op group, or in a coordinated competitive unit.

Quick recommendations

GROUND BRANCH Small-team loadout control Single-player and co-op scenarios Online co-op for up to eight players and 8v8 adversarial play Weapon and gear customization, deliberate movement and lethality Active pre-alpha/Steam Early Access development
Six Days in Fallujah Historically grounded urban warfare Story missions, with content expanding during development Co-op urban combat True accounts, urban tactics and changing battle conditions Launched in Steam Early Access on 22 June 2023
Insurgency: Sandstorm Lethal infantry action between arcade and milsim Solo and AI depth depend on the current mode and listing Competitive and cooperative infantry modes Fast kills, sound, recoil and careful movement Verify current platforms and editions in the official listing
Hell Let Loose World War II large-team battles Not primarily a solo campaign choice Large multiplayer combined-arms matches Historical weapons, roles, armor and front-line coordination Verify current platform support and edition details

No authoritative cross-game statistic establishes a single numerical “realism” winner. The rankings above are practical recommendations based on each game’s stated systems, scale and intended play style.

What makes a tactical shooter realistic?

Realism is a set of design priorities rather than a graphics setting. A game can use authentic weapons but still play like an arcade shooter, or it can simplify ballistics while demanding credible tactics. Evaluate these seven dimensions before choosing.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Ballistics and lethality

Look for meaningful bullet travel, penetration, recoil, hit locations, suppression and medical consequences. High lethality changes behavior: exposing yourself for a second can end a fight, so players use cover, observation and controlled fire instead of sprinting between targets.

Rules of engagement

SWAT games add a different form of realism. You may need to identify a threat, issue commands, preserve evidence and arrest compliant suspects. Shooting accurately is only one part of mission success.

Communication and command

Large tactical battles rely on radio discipline, squad roles, map marking and an agreed plan. A game can be mechanically realistic yet feel casual if players never coordinate; conversely, a comparatively simple model becomes highly tactical when a squad communicates well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scale and combined arms

Some titles simulate a fireteam clearing rooms. Others combine infantry, armor, helicopters, logistics and bases across a large map. Scale determines the time spent moving, observing and supporting teammates before firing.

Scenario flexibility

Campaign missions, procedural objectives, user-made scenarios and mod support dramatically affect replayability. A sandbox can provide more variety than a fixed story, but it also expects players to learn systems and find or create suitable missions.

Historical or professional context

Historical grounding can shape maps, equipment and mission objectives. Professional procedure can be more important than weapon authenticity in a police tactical game. Decide whether you want a documented conflict, a modern military sandbox or a law-enforcement simulation.

Arma 3: the broadest military simulation

Arma 3 is the best overall recommendation for experienced PC players who want one platform for solo campaigns, multiplayer operations and user-created content. Bohemia Interactive describes it as a military sandbox with a large arsenal of modern weapons and vehicles, realistic ballistics, combined-arms operations, single-player and multiplayer content, and extensive opportunities for content creation. It released on 12 September 2013, yet its sandbox structure keeps it relevant for players who value breadth over a short, tightly scripted campaign.

What you can do alone

The official game includes campaigns and standalone scenarios. You can learn infantry movement, optics, vehicles and mission objectives without immediately joining a public server. Solo play is also useful for practicing controls and understanding how the simulation represents distance, concealment and equipment.

Why multiplayer is different

Arma 3 supports organized operations, cooperative missions, competitive scenarios and community-created modes. The same underlying systems can represent a reconnaissance patrol, an armored assault or a helicopter extraction. Server rules and mission design determine how serious the experience feels, so read a community’s expectations before joining.

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Strength: unmatched breadth across infantry, vehicles, aviation, logistics and mission creation.
  • Strength: campaigns and multiplayer scenarios are available in one package.
  • Strength: a mature mod ecosystem supplies new maps, factions, equipment and rules.
  • Trade-off: controls and systems take time to learn; the game is not ideal for an instant, controller-first session.
  • Trade-off: quality and realism vary between official missions, public servers and community mods.

Choose Arma 3 when you want a long-term hobby and are willing to study controls, use a keyboard and communicate. Avoid it if your priority is a short, tightly directed solo campaign with minimal setup.

Ready or Not: the best solo-friendly close-quarters option

Ready or Not is the strongest pick for players who want tactical procedure in compact missions and still plan to play alone. Its PlayStation listing emphasizes selecting a squad, breaching, clearing corners and making engagement decisions. The PS5 version supports one-player play, making it easier to enter than multiplayer-first milsim titles.

The tactical loop

You approach a structure, choose equipment and teammates, gather information, then decide how to open each room. Door position, suspect behavior, civilians and lines of fire make every entry a judgment call. A successful mission is not simply the one with the highest number of eliminations; identification, restraint and control matter.

Solo, co-op and communication

Solo play lets you direct an AI squad and set the pace yourself. Co-op adds human partners who can cover angles and execute simultaneous breaches, but it also raises the cost of poor communication. Agree on entry order, sectors and less-lethal responsibilities before opening a door.

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Strength: focused maps and room-clearing make it approachable in short sessions.
  • Strength: tactical decisions are procedural rather than purely reflex-based.
  • Strength: a one-player PS5 option gives console players a clear solo route.
  • Trade-off: close-quarters tension is not a substitute for a full combined-arms military sandbox.
  • Trade-off: platform support and edition availability can vary by region and console generation, so check the current listing before buying.

Squad: organized 100-player warfare

Squad is the best choice for players who want communication-first modern combat at large scale. Its official description calls it a tactical FPS built around teamwork, communication and realistic combat, with 100-player combined-arms battles. Infantry, vehicles, logistics and forward positions matter because one squad’s actions affect the wider team.

What makes it realistic

The realism comes from coordination and battlefield context as much as from weapon behavior. You must know where your squad is, report contacts clearly, follow a leader’s plan and understand when to attack, defend, resupply or relocate. Long periods of movement and observation are normal because the fight is distributed across a large area.

Solo expectations

Squad is not the first recommendation for a traditional solo campaign. You can join a match alone, but the intended experience is to become one member of a human squad. Players who dislike voice chat, waiting for orders or depending on strangers may find it frustrating.

Practical preparation

A gaming headset with a microphone is optional equipment rather than a game requirement, but it is strongly useful for this communication-heavy format. Learn the radio channels, keep callouts concise and ask for clarification instead of improvising a conflicting plan.

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Strength: 100-player battles create a sense of front lines, support and operational depth.
  • Strength: teamwork and communication are explicit design goals.
  • Strength: combined arms gives infantry, armor and logistics meaningful roles.
  • Trade-off: the experience depends heavily on server culture and the willingness of teammates to communicate.
  • Trade-off: it offers less solo-focused content than Arma 3 or Ready or Not.

GROUND BRANCH: small-team control and custom loadouts

GROUND BRANCH is the best fit for players who want to configure a small unit’s weapons and gear and then fight deliberately. Its listing includes single-player, online player-versus-player and online co-op. Co-op supports up to eight players, while adversarial play supports 8v8 matches.

Why loadout control matters

You can tailor weapons and equipment to a role instead of accepting a fixed class template. That supports methodical planning: one player may carry equipment for opening doors, another may focus on observation, and a third may carry extra ammunition or support tools. Customization is valuable only when the mission gives those choices a tactical consequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where it sits between solo and multiplayer

Its scale is more intimate than Squad’s 100-player battles. A small group can maintain a shared plan, clear an objective and learn from mistakes without managing an entire front. Solo and co-op options make it more flexible than a purely competitive shooter, although the quality and variety of scenarios depend on the current build.

Development status

The developer identifies GROUND BRANCH as active pre-alpha/Steam Early Access. Features, balance, maps and availability can change, so treat current store information as provisional rather than a final specification.

Six Days in Fallujah: historical urban combat

Six Days in Fallujah is the choice for players who want urban military missions framed by real accounts. The official site describes it as a first-person tactical military shooter recreating true stories of Marines, Soldiers and Iraqi civilians during the Battle of Fallujah, described there as the toughest urban battle since 1968.

Historical focus

The setting is not a generic modern-war backdrop. Missions are built around documented experiences, which gives movement through buildings and streets a human and historical context. That focus may appeal more than a purely fictional sandbox, but it also means the subject matter is serious and the presentation is not escapist in the same way as a conventional action game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solo and co-op content

The game launched in Steam Early Access on 22 June 2023. Its Command and Control update added the first two single-player story missions after launch. Because development is ongoing, the amount and shape of solo content can change; verify the current mission list before purchasing if a full campaign is your main requirement.

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Strength: true accounts provide a distinct historical foundation.
  • Strength: urban layouts reward information gathering, controlled movement and coordinated entry.
  • Trade-off: Early Access means feature completeness and update timing are not final.
  • Trade-off: it is a focused urban experience rather than a vehicle-heavy sandbox like Arma 3.

Insurgency: Sandstorm: lethal infantry action without full milsim overhead

Insurgency: Sandstorm occupies the middle ground between fast arcade shooters and complex military simulations. It is a good choice when you want weapons to feel dangerous, movement to be cautious and sound and recoil to matter, but you do not want to learn the extensive controls and mission-building ecosystem associated with a full sandbox.

Why it feels tactical

High lethality makes positioning, suppression, optics and pacing important. Winning a firefight often depends on seeing the opponent first, using cover and coordinating a push rather than simply having faster aim. The result is more immediate than a long-form milsim while still punishing careless exposure.

Choosing it over the other games

Pick Sandstorm if your group wants repeatable infantry matches with a relatively short path from installation to action. Choose Ready or Not instead when procedure, arrests and room-by-room decisions are central. Choose Squad when the attraction is 100-player coordination and combined arms. Check the current official listing for modes, platforms and edition details because those details can change.

Hell Let Loose: World War II teamwork at large scale

Hell Let Loose is the best alternative for players who want the structure of a large tactical battle but prefer World War II equipment and battlefields. Its appeal is historical combined-arms teamwork: infantry roles, armor support, command decisions and front-line movement matter more than individual kill counts.

How it differs from modern tactical shooters

The period setting changes weapons, sight pictures, vehicle behavior and engagement distances. You will not get the modern optics and equipment of Squad or Arma 3. That limitation is the point for players who want historical constraints and a shared battle narrative.

Solo expectations

It is primarily a multiplayer choice rather than a traditional solo-campaign recommendation. You can enter a match alone, but success depends on joining a functioning unit and accepting a defined role. Verify the current platform and edition information in the official listing before purchase.

Arma 3 or Squad: which is more realistic?

There is no universal winner because they model different layers of realism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question Arma 3 Squad
Primary identity Broad military sandbox Communication-first team FPS
Solo content Campaigns and many scenarios Not primarily a solo campaign game
Battle scale Varies by mission and server 100-player battles are a defining format
Vehicles and systems Very broad combined-arms and mission systems Combined arms within a more focused match structure
Mod and scenario flexibility Extensive mod ecosystem and user-created content More dependent on the official and server-provided experience
Best for Players willing to learn a deep simulation Players who want coordinated human squads quickly

Choose Arma 3 for simulation breadth, solo campaigns and modding. Choose Squad for a more consistent, communication-centered large-team battle. A player can reasonably call either “more realistic” depending on whether realism means system depth or disciplined teamwork.

How to choose your game

  1. Start with your solo requirement. If you need a substantial solo path, begin with Arma 3 or Ready or Not. Treat Six Days in Fallujah as an evolving Early Access option because its single-player story content is still being expanded.
  2. Choose your team size. Pick GROUND BRANCH for a small group of up to eight co-op players, Squad or Hell Let Loose for large organized battles, and Ready or Not for compact entries with a few partners.
  3. Decide what “realism” means to you. Select Arma 3 for systems and combined arms, Ready or Not for procedure, Squad for communication, GROUND BRANCH for loadouts, Six Days in Fallujah for historical context, or Sandstorm for lethal infantry pacing.
  4. Check development status. GROUND BRANCH and Six Days in Fallujah are in active development. Confirm current maps, missions, platforms and update notes before treating a feature as permanent.
  5. Match the social commitment. Squad and Hell Let Loose reward voice communication and reliable teammates. Ready or Not and Arma 3 provide clearer solo routes when your schedule or group is inconsistent.

First-session checklist for a realistic tactical shooter

  • Read the control layout before entering a public match; tactical games often assign separate keys to stance, lean, optics, radio and equipment.
  • Play a tutorial, training range or solo scenario first so you can test weapons and movement without delaying teammates.
  • Use a microphone for communication-heavy games, especially Squad; keep callouts short and identify direction, distance and landmarks.
  • Choose one role and learn its responsibilities instead of changing equipment every few minutes.
  • Move from cover to cover, pause to observe and avoid assuming that a quiet area is safe.
  • Ask the squad leader for the current objective before taking an independent route.
  • Expect failure. Tactical games often teach through lost information, bad positioning and rushed decisions rather than through raw aim alone.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Buying for the wrong kind of realism

Authentic weapon names do not guarantee realistic procedure or simulation depth. Read the game’s intended structure first: a SWAT title, a 100-player team FPS and a military sandbox can all be realistic in different ways.

Assuming Early Access is a finished campaign

GROUND BRANCH and Six Days in Fallujah can change substantially. Confirm the current solo mission count, multiplayer modes and development notes at the time of purchase.

Joining a communication-heavy server without a microphone

You can technically play without voice equipment, but Squad and similar large-team games are designed around rapid information sharing. A headset with a microphone is optional hardware, yet it removes a major practical barrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting every public server to be equally serious

Community rules, moderators and mission design shape the experience. If a server feels chaotic, try another group rather than concluding that the game itself lacks tactical depth.

Ignoring platform and edition changes

Store pages, prices, review counts, supported platforms and edition contents are volatile. Check the current official listing, particularly for console versions of Ready or Not and for the evolving Early Access titles.

Bottom line

Buy Arma 3 for the deepest and widest military sandbox, Ready or Not for solo-friendly SWAT procedure, and Squad for 100-player communication and combined arms. Choose GROUND BRANCH when small-team loadout control matters most, Six Days in Fallujah for historically grounded urban missions, Insurgency: Sandstorm for lethal but accessible infantry combat, and Hell Let Loose for World War II teamwork. The most realistic game is the one whose model of combat matches the decisions you actually want to make.
