The best RC car depends on where you will drive, how fast you want to go, your experience, and your complete budget. For most first-time hobbyists, an ARRMA Mojave GROM, ARRMA GORGON, or Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5 is a better starting point than a high-speed 6S model; crawlers such as the Traxxas TRX-4M are better for slow, technical driving.

There is no universal winner. A crawler, basher, race car, drift car, and street vehicle are designed around different surfaces and driving styles. The shortlist below separates those categories, explains what each model includes, and shows the ownership costs and compromises that matter after checkout.

Key takeaways

  • The best first hobby-grade RC car is usually a manageable brushed or small 4WD model, not the fastest vehicle available.
  • ARRMA lists the Mojave GROM at $169.99, the GORGON at $189.99, and the BIG ROCK 223S 4×4 at $369.99 in the U.S. catalog during the research pass; prices and package contents can change.
  • The Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5 is a 1/10-scale brushed truck listed at 30-plus mph with a battery and charger included, while the Slash 2WD BL-2s lists its battery and charger separately.
  • Small crawlers such as the Traxxas TRX-4M and Axial SCX24 suit indoor obstacles and technical driving, but small tires struggle in tall grass and large rocks.
  • Brushless 4WD models deliver more speed and traction but also demand more space, battery knowledge, maintenance, and money after a crash.

What are the best RC cars for different uses?

The best RC cars are category-specific: a budget basher is not a good drift car, a crawler is not a racing car, and a high-speed street model is rarely a sensible first purchase.

How should you choose an RC car?

Choose the driving surface first, then the vehicle category, power system, size, and purchase format. Starting with advertised top speed often leads to buying a vehicle that is difficult to control or impossible to use safely in the available space.

Driving environment Best vehicle type Why Usually a poor fit
Indoor floors or tabletop obstacles 1/24–1/18 crawler or mini car Compact and controllable 1/10 or larger basher
Pavement On-road, rally, drift, or street basher Designed for smooth surfaces and precise handling Low-clearance off-road chassis on rough ground
Short grass 1/10 2WD or 4WD truck Enough wheel size and clearance for ordinary lawns Very small 1/24 vehicle
Tall grass 1/10 or larger monster truck More clearance and tire size Low-slung touring or drift car
Gravel and dirt 4WD truck or basher Traction, clearance, and suspension travel Low racing chassis
Rocks and technical trails Crawler Low gearing and controlled wheel movement High-speed street car
Jumps 1/10 or 1/8 basher Suspension travel and a crash-oriented layout Scale crawler
Racing track Purpose-built buggy or short-course race truck Lower weight and track-focused handling Heavy monster truck
Smooth drift surface Purpose-built drift chassis Correct tires, steering geometry, and throttle response Off-road basher

What makes an RC car good?

A good RC car offers predictable steering and throttle, adequate durability for its intended use, replaceable parts, accessible repairs, suitable tires and clearance, and a realistic ownership cost. Top speed is only one specification and is often less important than control, available space, and parts support.

  • Control: Smooth throttle and predictable steering are more valuable to a beginner than maximum speed.
  • Durability: Look for a chassis and suspension designed for the intended surface, but do not interpret any model as indestructible.
  • Parts support: Arms, bumpers, gears, tires, bodies, and electronics should be available through the manufacturer or established dealers.
  • Repairability: Replaceable modules, accessible screws, manuals, parts diagrams, and exploded views reduce long-term frustration.
  • Battery ecosystem: Included equipment, replacement battery cost, charging convenience, runtime, and connector compatibility all affect value.
  • Upgrade path: A supported platform can improve with new shocks, tires, gearing, motors, or batteries instead of being discarded.

What is the difference between toy-grade and hobby-grade RC cars?

Toy-grade RC cars are cheaper and simpler, while hobby-grade RC cars cost more but use replaceable and upgradeable mechanical and electronic components.

Characteristic Toy-grade Hobby-grade
Initial price Usually lower Usually higher
Electronics Often integrated or proprietary Replaceable motor, speed controller, servo, receiver, or radio components
Repairs Often difficult or uneconomical Designed for component replacement
Parts Limited or unavailable Published parts lists and broader support
Upgrades Limited Motors, shocks, tires, gearing, batteries, and bodies can often be changed
Best use Occasional indoor or driveway play Driving, maintenance, repair, and continued hobby use

A cheap toy-grade car can be the correct choice for a very young child or occasional indoor play. A toy-grade car is a poor choice for someone who wants to jump, repair crash damage, or upgrade over time. A fast hobby-grade basher can be the wrong choice for a young child because speed and crash energy increase quickly.

What do RTR, kit, roller, and almost-ready-to-run mean?

RTR means Ready to Run, but RTR does not universally mean that the vehicle includes a battery and charger.

Format Usually included What the buyer must expect Best suited to
RTR Vehicle, motor, speed controller, steering servo, radio system, body, and tires Battery and charger may be included or sold separately Most beginners and buyers who want to drive quickly
Kit Chassis and assembly components; contents vary Usually requires electronics, radio, battery, charger, and assembly Experienced hobbyists or buyers seeking the building experience
Roller Rolling chassis without a complete power system Requires compatible motor, speed controller, servo, radio, battery, and charger Owners who already have compatible equipment
Almost ready to run Most of the vehicle, but a specified item remains Read the exact package list before ordering Buyers comfortable completing a partial setup

Traxxas lists the Slash 2WD XL-5 with battery and charger included, while the Slash 2WD BL-2s lists its battery and charger separately. ARRMA also sells both battery-and-charger bundles and RTR models requiring separate power equipment, so package contents must be checked model by model.

Axial says kits are better suited to hobbyists with some experience or access to experienced help. An RTR model is normally the simpler first purchase, but RTR still requires cleaning, inspection, charging, and replacement of damaged parts.

Should you buy a brushed or brushless RC car?

Buy brushed for a lower-cost, easier first vehicle; buy brushless when you specifically want stronger acceleration, higher speed, and better efficiency and are prepared for higher operating and repair costs.

Power system Advantages Disadvantages Best match
Brushed Lower entry cost, smooth modest-speed control, simple first purchase, often bundled with battery and charger Less efficient, brushes wear, lower performance ceiling Beginners, children with supervision, compact vehicles, casual driving
Brushless More speed and acceleration, better efficiency, longer motor life under comparable use Higher price, greater crash energy, more drivetrain wear, costlier batteries and chargers Experienced drivers and open outdoor spaces

ARRMA groups vehicles into brushed, 3S, 4S, 6S, and 8S power categories. The 3S, 4S, 6S, and 8S labels refer to battery-system capability rather than a universal speed rating; speed also depends on gearing, tires, battery, surface, and conditions.

Is 2WD or 4WD better?

2WD is cheaper and mechanically simpler, while 4WD provides more traction on grass, gravel, dirt, and jumps but adds parts, cost, and maintenance.

Drive type Advantages Limitations Good starting environment
2WD Lower purchase price, simpler drivetrain, easier maintenance Less traction on loose, wet, or uneven surfaces; rear tires spin more easily Flat pavement, packed dirt, controlled driving
4WD Better traction, acceleration, and stability across mixed terrain Higher price, more drivetrain parts, greater repair complexity Grass, gravel, dirt, jumps, and mixed terrain

Four-wheel drive does not make an RC car indestructible. Extra traction can increase stress on gears, driveshafts, differentials, and axles, especially when a powerful brushless system is used on high-grip surfaces.

Which RC cars are the best for beginners?

The ARRMA Mojave GROM brushed is the strongest compact first hobby-grade recommendation, while the ARRMA GORGON and Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5 are better choices when a larger outdoor platform and repair path matter more.

Best first hobby-grade RC car: ARRMA Mojave GROM brushed

The ARRMA Mojave GROM is a small 4WD desert-truck-style basher intended for adults or older children supervised by an adult who want a real hobby-grade vehicle without immediately buying a large brushless model. ARRMA listed the 1/16 Mojave GROM brushed RTR with battery and charger at $169.99 in the United States during the research pass.

The compact size makes the Mojave GROM easier to transport and more practical for a driveway or small outdoor area than a 1/8 or 1/7 vehicle. The trade-off is that small tires and limited clearance struggle in tall grass, deep gravel, and large jumps. Confirm the current battery, charger, and exact package before purchase through the official ARRMA vehicle catalog.

Best low-cost outdoor basher: ARRMA GORGON brushed

The ARRMA GORGON is a 1/10-scale, 2WD brushed RTR monster truck listed at $189.99 with a battery and charger included in the surfaced ARRMA catalog. The larger footprint suits backyard driving better than a micro vehicle, and the 2WD layout keeps the mechanical design relatively straightforward.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The GORGON is less effective than a 4WD truck on loose gravel, wet grass, and mud. The GORGON is best for a first backyard truck when price and repair simplicity matter more than maximum speed. Confirm the current package contents before buying.

Best established beginner platform: Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5

The Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5 is a 1/10-scale brushed short-course truck listed at 30-plus mph and $239.95 with a battery and charger included. The short-course body helps shield the wheels and suspension, while the platform provides a broad repair and upgrade path through the Traxxas ecosystem.

The Slash 2WD XL-5 is more capable than a casual toy, but 30-plus mph can be excessive for a young child. The 2WD layout requires throttle discipline on loose ground, and the included NiMH-style setup is less powerful and efficient than a brushless LiPo arrangement. Budget for metric tools, spare suspension parts, and eventually an additional battery. The official Slash 2WD listing is the best place to verify the current package.

Which RC cars are best for brushless performance?

The ARRMA VORTEKS 223S 4×4 is the most approachable step-up option in this shortlist, while the BIG ROCK 223S is better for mixed terrain and the KRATON 6S is aimed at experienced drivers who have space, budget, and repair tolerance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best step-up basher: ARRMA VORTEKS 223S 4×4

The ARRMA VORTEKS 223S is a 1/10-scale, 4WD brushless stadium truck listed in current catalog examples at approximately $249.99–$339.99 depending on configuration. Four-wheel drive and brushless power make the VORTEKS more capable on grass and dirt than an entry-level 2WD brushed truck, without moving into the largest vehicle classes.

The VORTEKS is not a carefree beginner toy. Brushless power increases crash energy and repair costs, and some packages require a separate battery and charger. The buyer must understand LiPo voltage, connectors, battery dimensions, discharge requirements, and charging before driving.

Best versatile monster truck: ARRMA BIG ROCK 223S 4×4

The ARRMA BIG ROCK 223S is a 1/10-scale, 4WD brushless monster truck listed at $369.99 in the surfaced U.S. catalog. High ground clearance and large tires make the BIG ROCK a stronger mixed-terrain choice than a low on-road vehicle, particularly for grass, gravel, and uneven backyard surfaces.

Rank #3
Monster Jam Official Grave Digger Remote Control Monster Truck, 1:24 Scale, 2.4 GHz, for Ages 4 and Up
  • Monster Jam Official Grave Digger Remote Control Monster Truck, 1:24 Scale, 2.4 GHz, for Ages 4 and Up

The BIG ROCK costs more than an entry-level brushed truck, is unsuitable for indoor driving, and can place substantial stress on its drivetrain because large tires and 4WD transmit high loads. Check whether the exact listing includes a battery and charger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best serious high-speed basher: ARRMA KRATON 6S

The ARRMA KRATON 6S is a 1/8-scale, 4WD brushless basher for experienced hobbyists who want jumps, dirt, large tires, and substantial suspension travel. ARRMA listed KRATON 6S examples at $699.99 for an RTR model and $829.99 for a KRATON 6S EXB RTR during the research pass.

The KRATON 6S is a poor first purchase for most people. The vehicle needs a large driving area, suitable batteries and charger, a larger transport solution, and a budget for expensive crash damage. High-speed operation also creates meaningful hazards for people, pets, property, and the vehicle.

Which RC cars are best for crawling?

The Traxxas TRX-4M is the strongest compact crawler recommendation, while the Axial SCX24 is a good alternative for buyers who prioritize scale bodies, accessories, and indoor obstacle courses.

Best compact crawler: Traxxas TRX-4M

The Traxxas TRX-4M is an approximately 1/18-scale, 4WD electric crawler designed for slow, controllable technical driving indoors or outdoors. Traxxas lists the Ford Bronco and Land Rover Defender at $159.95 and the Chevrolet K10 High Trail at $179.99, with battery and charger equipment listed for the models, although package styles can vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TRX-4M is engaging because line choice and throttle control matter more than acceleration. Small tires and scale dimensions limit the truck in tall grass, mud, and large rocks, so the TRX-4M is not a substitute for a fast basher. Traxxas documentation identifies a 750mAh 2-cell LiPo and iD balance charger in the model equipment specification, while noting that battery and charger styles may vary; consult the TRX-4M specification document and the exact product page.

Best alternative mini crawler: Axial SCX24

The Axial SCX24 is a compact crawler family with many licensed bodies, accessories, and community-supported modifications. SCX24 RTR models are the simpler entry route, while Axial’s kits suit hobbyists with some experience or access to experienced help.

The SCX24 is a poor choice for someone who actually wants speed or frequent driving through tall grass. Exact SCX24 model, body, battery, charger, price, and availability vary, so verify the individual listing in the official Axial completion-level catalog.

What are the best RC cars for drifting, racing, and on-road driving?

Purpose-built drift, on-road, rally, and race chassis are better than off-road bashers when the goal is precision driving on a suitable smooth surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Drift: Choose a purpose-built drift chassis with appropriate tires, steering setup, and throttle response. Drift cars need a smooth surface and technique; being slower than a basher does not automatically make a drift car beginner-friendly.

Racing: Choose a purpose-built buggy or short-course race truck for a track. Heavy monster trucks are usually a poor fit because their weight, tires, and suspension are optimized for bashing rather than lap times.

On-road and street: ARRMA lists the INFRACTION and FELONY as 1/7-scale, 6S brushless, 4WD all-road vehicles at $699.99 in the surfaced U.S. catalog. The INFRACTION is the more straightforward all-road street-bash concept; the FELONY uses a more stylized street-bash body and configuration.

INFRACTION and FELONY models need broad, smooth, debris-free surfaces. Curbs, potholes, pedestrians, and roadside traffic create serious hazards. ARRMA advertises vehicles capable of more than 80 mph across its range, but a manufacturer maximum is not a normal operating speed and depends on battery, gearing, tires, surface, and conditions. The ARRMA 1/7-scale catalog should be checked for the exact current model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the best RC cars for kids?

The best RC car for a child is a slow, controllable model matched to the child’s age, driving area, and adult supervision—not necessarily the cheapest car.

Child’s situation More suitable direction Why Important qualification
Very young child or occasional indoor play Simple toy-grade or slow mini vehicle Lower complexity and speed Check steering quality and whether replacement parts exist
Older child learning outdoors Brushed mini, GORGON, or other manageable 2WD truck Lower entry cost and understandable maintenance Adult supervision remains necessary
Indoor family obstacle course TRX-4M or SCX24 crawler Slow, compact, and controllable Not suitable when the child wants speed
Experienced older child with a large safe area Adjustable brushless model More performance and an upgrade path Use throttle limiting where available and teach battery safety

Operate RC cars away from roads, pools, pets, pedestrians, and fragile property. A cheap toy can frustrate a child through weak steering, short range, or a lack of repair options; a high-speed hobby-grade basher can overwhelm a young driver.

How much should you budget for an RC car?

The complete running budget includes the vehicle, battery, charger, tools, spare parts, cleaning supplies, and sometimes safe LiPo storage equipment; the chassis price alone is not the cost of ownership.

Budget band What it usually buys Likely compromise
Under $100 Mostly toy-grade or very small hobby-grade choices Parts support, durability, and outdoor capability can be limited
$150–$250 Mini crawlers and basic hobby-grade trucks Brushed performance or small-vehicle terrain limits
$250–$400 A broad selection of capable 1/10 and brushless vehicles Battery and charger may be extra on brushless packages
$400–$700 Serious brushless, scale, and performance models More space, maintenance, and crash expense
$700 and up Large-scale and high-speed vehicles Substantial battery, transport, safety, and repair requirements

Before the first drive, plan for the following where the package does not already include them:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Correct battery and a charger designed for its chemistry and cell count
  • A spare battery for longer sessions
  • AA batteries for the transmitter, if required
  • Metric hex drivers and a wheel wrench
  • A cleaning brush and compressed air
  • Replacement suspension arms, body clips, and possibly tires
  • Shock or differential oils for service
  • LiPo-safe charging and storage equipment where applicable

Traxxas’ TRX-4M owner’s manual documents battery and tool requirements and notes that equipment can vary by package.

What battery and charger do you need?

A battery must match the vehicle’s voltage range, connector, physical dimensions, and discharge requirements, and the charger must support the battery chemistry and cell count.

NiMH: NiMH packs are generally simpler and more forgiving for beginners. Brushed RTR packages commonly use this type of setup, although the exact equipment depends on the model.

LiPo: LiPo batteries deliver more performance but require correct charging, storage, handling, and inspection. A 2S, 3S, or 6S label describes the LiPo cell-count and nominal-voltage class; the label does not mean that every battery with the same cell count fits every vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not select a battery based only on “2S” or “3S.” Check the connector, compartment dimensions, low-voltage cutoff, charger compatibility, and the vehicle manufacturer’s approved voltage range. Never charge a damaged or swollen LiPo pack.

What maintenance does an RC car require?

Every hobby-grade RC car requires routine cleaning, inspection, temperature monitoring, and replacement of worn or crash-damaged parts, even when the vehicle is sold as RTR.

  1. Before driving: Check wheel nuts, body clips, visible screws, battery connections, steering response, and throttle operation.
  2. After a crash: Inspect suspension arms, steering links, driveshafts, wheels, body mounts, and differential behavior before continuing.
  3. After dusty driving: Remove dirt and grit with a brush or compressed air; avoid forcing debris into bearings and gears.
  4. After wet driving: Remove the battery, dry the vehicle, clean dirt, inspect bearings and metal hardware, and do not store the vehicle wet.
  5. During a session: Monitor motor and battery temperatures and stop if the system becomes excessively hot.
  6. Before storage: Follow the battery manufacturer’s charging and storage instructions and keep the vehicle clean and dry.

“Waterproof” does not mean maintenance-free or safe for unlimited water exposure. Electronics, motors, bearings, connectors, and fasteners still need care, and the model manual’s limitations take priority.

Should you buy a used RC car?

A used RC car can be economical when the model has current parts support, the electronics work, and the drivetrain can be inspected; an unknown battery or obsolete platform can turn a bargain into an expensive repair.

Some RC cars include a battery and charger, but RTR does not guarantee that both are included. The Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5 listing includes a battery and charger, while the Slash 2WD BL-2s listing sells those items separately; ARRMA packages also vary by model.

Is 2WD or 4WD better for a beginner?

2WD is cheaper and simpler to maintain, while 4WD offers more forgiving traction on grass, gravel, and dirt. For flat pavement or packed dirt, 2WD can be an excellent first choice; for mixed outdoor terrain, 4WD is usually easier to drive.

How fast should a first RC car be?

A first RC car should be fast enough for the available driving area but not faster than the driver can control safely. A 20–35 mph vehicle can be more useful than a 60-plus-mph model in a small yard because high speed requires more space and increases crash damage.

Can an RC car be used in water?

Water-resistant RC cars can often tolerate limited wet driving, but “waterproof” does not mean maintenance-free or suitable for unlimited water exposure. Remove the battery, dry the vehicle, clean grit, inspect hardware and bearings, and follow the exact model manual after wet driving.

Are crawlers or bashers better?

Crawlers are better for slow, technical driving over obstacles, while bashers are better for speed, dirt, and jumps. A crawler is a poor choice for someone seeking acceleration, and a basher is a poor choice for precise low-speed trail driving.

The Bottom Line

There is no single best RC car. For most new hobbyists, start with a manageable brushed model such as the ARRMA Mojave GROM, ARRMA GORGON, or Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5; choose a TRX-4M or SCX24 for crawling, and move to brushless 4WD or 6S models only when your driving space, battery knowledge, maintenance tolerance, and budget justify the upgrade.
