For a nearby transfer among Android, iPhone, and Windows, LocalSend is the most consistently cross-platform option covered here: its project documentation lists all three platforms and says transfers run over a local network without internet or third-party servers. Quick Share is still convenient for Android-to-Windows and can reach an iPhone from certain Android models; for other eligible Android devices, Google offers a QR-code download route that uploads files and requires internet access. If the recipient is elsewhere, use a browser or cloud link; if you need continuing access, use cloud sync.

The right choice depends on the exact devices, whether they share a local network, whether both people can install an app, and whether an internet-hosted copy is acceptable. This guide reflects product information available on October 13, 2026; compatibility and service limits can change.

Choose by device, distance, and file custody

“Alternative to Quick Share” can mean several different things. You may need to move a file between an Android phone and an iPhone in the same room, get a file from an iPhone onto a Windows PC, or share a download with someone in another location. Those are not the same job. A nearby transfer can avoid uploading the file to a cloud service, while a link can reach someone on another network. Cloud sync is different again: it is intended to make files available over time, not just hand off a one-time copy.

Start with four questions: What are the sending and receiving devices? Are they on the same local network or physically near one another? Can both sides install an app? Is it acceptable for a file to be uploaded temporarily or stored in a cloud account? These answers narrow the options more reliably than choosing one app as universally best.

LocalSend: the strongest fit for a nearby three-platform handoff

LocalSend’s official project page lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and Fire OS. It describes a free, open-source app for sharing files and messages over a local network without an internet connection or third-party server, and says communications use HTTPS encryption. For this title’s Android, iPhone, and Windows combination, its breadth is the key advantage: all three systems are named in the project’s platform list, rather than support being restricted to selected Android models.

LocalSend is an app-based workflow, not a link that a recipient opens from anywhere. Install it on both endpoints, connect the devices to a local network where they can communicate, and use the app to send and receive. If the recipient is remote and there is no shared local network, this is the wrong default; a cloud link or another internet-based method better suits that situation.

How to use LocalSend

  1. Install LocalSend on both the sending and receiving devices. Choose the appropriate version for Android, iOS, or Windows from the project’s official distribution channels.
  2. Put both devices on a local network that permits them to communicate. Merely having Wi-Fi enabled does not guarantee that a managed or guest network allows device-to-device traffic.
  3. Open LocalSend on both endpoints. On the sender, select the files and the receiving device shown by the app; on the receiving device, approve the incoming transfer if prompted. The exact labels can vary by app version, so follow the current interface rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
  4. Keep the app open and devices reachable until the transfer completes. Confirm that the files arrived and open as expected before deleting or moving the originals.

If the devices cannot see one another

  • Check the network first. Both devices need a network path to each other. A guest Wi-Fi network or a managed workplace network may block communication between clients.
  • Check firewall rules. LocalSend’s project documentation notes that firewall adjustments may be needed. On Windows, review whether the app is permitted on the current network profile; change only the rule needed to allow the transfer.
  • Check access-point isolation. The project notes that router AP isolation may need to be disabled. This setting intentionally prevents connected devices from communicating, which can make discovery fail even when both appear connected to the same Wi-Fi.
  • Do not weaken a network indiscriminately. If the router or firewall is managed by an organization, ask its administrator rather than disabling protections. Use a network you control or choose a hosted-link method if local communication cannot safely be enabled.

The project describes its encryption and local-only transfer model; those are project claims, not an independent security audit. Local transfer avoids placing the file on a third-party server as part of the described workflow, but it does not by itself protect a device that is already compromised or make an untrusted network safe.

Quick Share: know which route your devices can use

Quick Share remains an option rather than a universal solution. Google’s current help documentation lists Android 6 and later, Chromebooks, and selected Windows PCs through Google’s Windows application. For Apple-device sharing using AirDrop visibility, Google lists supported Android models rather than every Android phone. Pixel 8a or later is among the named eligibility guidance; certain Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion, and Motorola devices are also identified. Because eligibility is device-specific and may change, consult Google’s current device guidance before relying on this route.

Sending to an Apple device from a supported Android model

  1. Confirm that the Android model is eligible for Google’s AirDrop-based Quick Share route. Do not infer eligibility from Android version alone.
  2. On the Apple receiving device, set AirDrop visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes, as Google instructs.
  3. Send from Quick Share on Android, then accept the incoming notification on the Apple device.
  4. After the transfer, review the Apple device’s AirDrop visibility setting and return it to the preferred setting if needed.

This path depends on the receiver’s AirDrop visibility and acceptance, so it is not a silent background handoff. It is also distinct from the QR fallback: the latter is a hosted download and has an internet requirement.

Using the QR-code download fallback

For Quick Share devices that do not have the Apple-device AirDrop support, Google documents a QR-code flow. The recipient scans the code to open a secure download page. Both sender and recipient need internet access; Google says the files are end-to-end encrypted, uploaded to Google servers, and remain available for 24 hours. This is useful when device eligibility blocks the nearby route, but it changes the transfer model: the file is hosted temporarily rather than simply passed over a shared local network.

Google-stated QR-flow limit What it means
10 GB of files to Apple devices every 24 hours A daily total, not an unlimited allowance
Up to 1,000 files in one share session A per-session file-count ceiling
Up to 20 Apple-device recipients at once A recipient limit for a share
Files available for 24 hours The recipient must download before the stated availability window ends

Google also notes that mobile-data charges may apply when Wi-Fi is not used. Check the connection before starting a large transfer, particularly when either device has a limited data plan. Google’s support documentation says, “Quick Share cross-platform sharing has built-in security and privacy safeguards and is independently tested.” That statement describes Google’s own documentation; it should not be read as a broader independent assessment of every device, network, or file-sharing scenario.

For an iPhone-to-Windows transfer, pick the handoff you actually need

The question “What is the easiest way to transfer files from an iPhone to a Windows PC?” has no single answer independent of distance and frequency. If both devices are near each other and the file should stay off cloud storage, LocalSend is the straightforward cross-platform candidate in this comparison: it lists iOS and Windows and uses the local network. If you need to send to a person elsewhere, an upload-and-link service is more practical. If you want the same photos or documents available on the PC repeatedly, use a sync or backup workflow rather than sending each item as a one-off transfer.

Before selecting a cloud or browser service, check the recipient’s access method, whether a sign-in is required, how long shared links stay active, and the maximum upload or file size. Those terms are service-specific and are not established uniformly across the options here. For sensitive material, also consider whether the link can be forwarded and whether you can revoke access after delivery.

Browser links, cloud links, and cloud sync are not interchangeable

Browser-based sharing

A browser-based method can reduce installation friction when the other person only needs to receive a file through a web page. Some browser peer-to-peer tools are described as no-install options, but the current details for any particular service—including its limits, encryption model, and maintenance—need verification. Do not assume that “browser-based” means the file never touches a server or that a link is private by default.

Upload-and-link sharing

Upload-and-link is a better fit when the recipient is on another network or cannot join the sender’s local transfer. The sender uploads a copy, then shares a link. This adds internet upload time and makes the service’s retention and access rules relevant. If the connection is slow or metered, a large file may be inconvenient; if the link is forwarded, someone beyond the intended recipient may be able to access it depending on the service’s controls.

A 2026 TechRadar comparison describes Dropbox sharing across Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, and web, and says recipients do not need Dropbox accounts to access shared files. It also reports a 2 GB free-storage allowance. That allowance is plan information reported by a secondary guide and may change, so verify current official terms before depending on it. Do not treat it as a guaranteed per-file upload limit or a permanent account entitlement.

Cloud drive for repeat access

Cloud drives are useful when you want files available from multiple devices or need a shared folder over time. Windows Central’s reporting identifies OneDrive and iCloud as better suited to ongoing sync or backup than to a single handoff. A synced folder can solve the recurring-access problem, but it introduces account setup, storage allocation, and ongoing synchronization instead of a one-time transfer. Check which device apps and account configurations are supported for your exact setup.

Make the choice with this decision path

  1. Both devices are nearby, and you have Android, iPhone, and Windows in the mix: use LocalSend if both devices can install it and the network allows local communication.
  2. Android to Windows: try Quick Share if the Windows PC is one of the selected supported PCs and Google’s Windows app is available for it. If not, LocalSend is another cross-platform option when both devices share a usable local network.
  3. Android to Apple device, and the Android model is eligible: use Quick Share’s AirDrop-visibility path, with AirDrop set to Everyone for 10 minutes and the receiving notification accepted.
  4. Android to Apple device, but the model lacks that AirDrop-based support: consider Google’s QR download flow if both devices have internet and the temporary hosted copy and stated limits work for the transfer.
  5. The recipient is elsewhere: use a browser or cloud link, after checking sign-in, expiry, size, and sharing controls.
  6. You want the files to stay available and update across devices: configure a cloud drive for sync or backup instead of repeatedly sending one-off copies.

These are conditional recommendations, not speed rankings. A 2026 comparison guide publishes illustrative transfer timings under stated Wi-Fi and home-upload assumptions; those figures are not universal benchmarks. Actual time depends on the file, both devices, and the network in use. No hands-on performance comparison is established here, so use a small, non-sensitive test file if timing or network behavior matters before moving a large batch.

Prepare files and protect the handoff

  • Confirm the destination has room. A transfer can complete at the network level but still be unusable if the receiving device lacks storage space.
  • Check the file itself. For a group of files, confirm names and count on arrival; for a critical document, open it on the receiving device before removing the original.
  • Separate transport from backup. Sending a file is not the same as retaining a recoverable copy. Keep the source until you know the recipient has what they need.
  • Use local sharing when upload is unnecessary. LocalSend’s described local-network model avoids an internet upload through a third-party server, while the Quick Share QR route explicitly uploads temporarily to Google servers.
  • Use links deliberately. For cloud-hosted files, choose a recipient and permissions carefully, and remove access when it is no longer needed if the service allows it.
  • Account for metered internet. The Google QR flow may incur mobile-data charges without Wi-Fi. Other upload-based methods also use an internet connection, so consider data allowances before sending large files.
