There is no evidence-based single “best” Quake Live host for 2026. No current provider, price, region, latency result, or service-quality comparison was verified. The dependable choice is an infrastructure service that lets you self-manage the Quake Live dedicated-server application: a general VPS, a dedicated server, or a Docker deployment on either. Your decision should be based on player location, operating-system access, port controls, administration skills, and the provider’s current support and pricing—not on an unverified host ranking.
Quake Live has a separate dedicated-server application. The documented SteamCMD route installs app ID 349090, after which you launch the supplied 32-bit or 64-bit scripts and maintain the server yourself. A community Docker project offers another deployment model, with example mappings for game traffic, statistics, and remote console. This guide explains how those approaches differ and how to select, deploy, secure, and operate a private or persistent server in 2026.

What “best hosting” means for Quake Live
For Quake Live, hosting quality is determined less by a branded game-hosting package than by the underlying machine and your ability to configure it. The server must run the dedicated application, expose the required network ports, stay online, and be close enough to players to keep latency consistent. A provider can supply the computer and network; you still install updates, create configurations, manage processes, and protect the system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe available documentation supports a deployment method, not a commercial ranking. A Steam Community guide updated September 7, 2023 describes installing dedicated-server app 349090 with SteamCMD and says a standard server or VPS can run multiple Quake Live instances. A separate community standards project publishes Docker examples. Neither source establishes a current provider’s price, data-center locations, support response, capacity, or reliability. Any article naming a “best” commercial host would therefore be guessing.

Choose a hosting model
| Model | What you receive | Advantages | Trade-offs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General VPS | A virtual Linux or other server under your control | Usually quick to provision; you control files, firewall, processes, and ports; one machine can run several instances | You administer the operating system and Quake Live; virtualized performance and network quality depend on the provider | Friends’ servers, small communities, testing, and administrators comfortable with SSH |
| Dedicated physical server | An entire machine reserved for your workloads | More predictable isolation and full operating-system access; room for several instances or other services | Often costs more; you still perform all game-server administration; unused capacity can be wasteful | Larger communities or operators who need consistent, isolated resources |
| Docker on a VPS or dedicated server | A containerized Quake Live setup based on a community-maintained project | Repeatable configuration, mounted files, and clear port declarations; convenient when you already use containers | Adds Docker networking and image maintenance; the project’s example is not a universal provider configuration | Operators who want reproducible deployments and understand Docker administration |
| Managed game-server package | A vendor’s control panel and support layer | Potentially simpler day-to-day operation if the package genuinely supports Quake Live | Compatibility, port access, file access, regions, pricing, and support quality must be verified individually; none were established here | Only after you confirm current Quake Live support in writing |
A VPS is the practical starting point for most private servers because it provides the required control without committing to a whole physical machine. Move to dedicated hardware when you have a demonstrated isolation or capacity requirement, not merely because a product page advertises more cores or memory. A Docker deployment is a packaging choice, not a guarantee of lower latency or higher player capacity.
What the documented Quake Live server setup requires
Dedicated application, not the desktop client
Quake Live distributes a dedicated-server application through SteamCMD. The documented application ID is 349090. The Steam support page lists system requirements for the game client; those figures describe what a player’s computer needs and must not be converted into a promise about how many dedicated-server players a machine can handle. No authoritative CPU, RAM, bandwidth, or slot threshold was established for server sizing.
Operating-system access
You need permission to install SteamCMD, create a non-root service account, write server files, open firewall ports, and keep the process running. The 2023 guide originally discussed Ubuntu Server 14.04, but that release is obsolete and should not be selected as a current production recommendation. Use an operating-system release that your chosen provider currently supports and that still receives security updates.
Recommended Free Tools
Network and process controls
The machine must allow inbound and outbound traffic on the ports you select. You also need a way to restart a crashed process, launch more than one instance without collisions, and collect logs. The guide recommends a process-control system for multiple processes and explicitly says never to run the Quake Live server as root.
How to deploy a SteamCMD server
The exact package commands differ by operating system, but the sequence below follows the documented installation route. Test on a disposable instance first, then repeat on the production machine after recording your configuration.
- Select a region. Choose a data center geographically close to the majority of players. If your group spans continents, decide whether one central location or separate regional instances will produce the fairest latency. Do not infer latency from a provider’s brand name; test the actual address from representative player networks.
- Create a normal service account. Add a dedicated operating-system user for Quake Live and give it ownership of the installation directory. Use administrative privileges only for package installation, firewall changes, and service setup. Run SteamCMD and the game process as the non-root account.
- Install SteamCMD and its required 32-bit compatibility components. Follow the current instructions for your operating system rather than copying the guide’s obsolete Ubuntu 14.04 assumptions. Confirm that the
steamcmdexecutable starts successfully before downloading the game files. - Download app 349090. In SteamCMD, sign in anonymously, select the dedicated application, update it, and validate the files. A conventional command sequence is
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 349090 validate +quit; verify the syntax against the SteamCMD build supplied by your operating system because packaging details can change. - Inspect the supplied launch scripts. The community guide points to separate 32-bit and 64-bit scripts. Choose the script appropriate for the executable and libraries available on your system, and run it once interactively so that missing files or permissions appear in the terminal.
- Create server configuration files. Set the server name, map rotation, game mode, access controls, and administrative settings in the configuration files used by your launch script. Keep those files outside disposable directories and back them up before changing them.
- Assign a unique port set. One instance must not compete with another for the same address and protocol. If you run several servers, give each its own game, statistics, and remote-console ports and record the mapping in your inventory.
- Open the firewall narrowly. Allow the selected game port over UDP and only the TCP services you actually use. Restrict remote-console access by source address or a private network where possible; do not expose an administrative interface broadly just because the process starts.
- Run under a process manager. Configure a system service or another process-control tool to start the server after boot, restart it when appropriate, and write logs to a known location. Test a deliberate stop and restart before inviting players.
- Verify from outside the machine. Join from a separate network, confirm that the server appears or accepts a direct connection, test the selected game mode, and check that an administrator can use the intended console path. Local success alone does not prove that the provider’s firewall or upstream network is configured correctly.
Using the Docker approach
The community Quake Live Server Standards project publishes Docker-based examples. Its sample Compose configuration mounts server and configuration data, maps the game traffic over UDP on port 27960, maps statistics over TCP on port 27960, and maps remote console over TCP on port 28960. These are example values, not mandatory ports for every installation or provider.
Deployment workflow
- Provision a supported Linux host with Docker Engine and the Compose plugin, or use an equivalent container runtime supported by the project.
- Obtain the project’s current Compose example and read its image, environment variables, volume paths, and startup command. Do not assume that an old image tag remains current.
- Copy the example into a private deployment directory, then create the mounted configuration and data directories with ownership that permits the container to write logs and server files.
- Change the host-side ports if another service already uses them. Preserve the required protocol: the sample distinguishes UDP game traffic from TCP statistics and remote console.
- Start the stack, inspect container logs, and confirm that the dedicated application finishes initialization before testing a remote connection.
- For multiple servers, duplicate the service definition with separate data directories and unique port sets, as the project recommends. Never share mutable configuration files between instances unless the project explicitly supports that arrangement.
- Pin a known-good image version, back up mounted data, and plan how you will pull updates and roll back if a new image changes startup behavior.
Docker makes the deployment reproducible, but it does not remove operational responsibility. The host still needs security updates, firewall rules, backups, monitoring, and enough network access for players to reach the published ports.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ports and firewall planning
The following values come from the project’s duel-server example. Treat them as a reference layout and confirm the ports required by the exact server configuration you deploy.
| Function | Example protocol | Example port | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quake Live game traffic | UDP | 27960 | Change it when another instance uses the port; open it on the host and any provider firewall |
| Statistics service | TCP | 27960 | The example uses TCP on the same numeric port as UDP game traffic; protocol matters |
| Remote console | TCP | 28960 | Restrict sources and credentials; expose it only when administration requires it |
Cloud firewalls, host firewalls, and container-publish rules are separate layers. A connection can fail if any one of them blocks the port. When changing a port, update the server configuration, host firewall, provider firewall, container mapping, and the address shared with players.
How to compare providers when you have current quotes
Because provider-specific figures were not established, request the same facts from every candidate and record the answers before paying. The following criteria are the useful comparison axes for this game.
Region and measured latency
Ask for the exact city or data-center region, then test from the networks your players actually use. A nearby region generally reduces round-trip time, but routing and congestion can matter more than straight-line distance. Compare results at the times your community plays, not only during quiet daytime hours.

Operating-system and file control
Confirm that you receive administrator or equivalent access, can install SteamCMD, can choose a supported Linux release, and can edit launch and configuration files. A locked-down panel may be unsuitable even if it advertises generic game hosting.
Port and firewall flexibility
Verify that UDP game traffic and the TCP services used by your chosen configuration are permitted. Ask whether you can select non-default ports for multiple instances and whether provider-level firewalls are included or billed separately.
Resource and network policy
Do not rely on client system requirements as a capacity guarantee. Ask how CPU contention, bandwidth limits, traffic filtering, snapshots, and overage charges work. The available material does not establish a universal player-slot, CPU, RAM, or bandwidth threshold, so capacity must be validated with your own workload.

Support and recovery
Find out whether support covers only the virtual machine or also the game process, how quickly network incidents are acknowledged, and whether you can restore a snapshot or attach a replacement disk. A provider that will not troubleshoot Quake Live may still be suitable for an experienced administrator, but that trade-off should be explicit.
Current price and renewal terms
Compare the recurring rate, setup fees, taxes, backup charges, IPv4 costs, bandwidth limits, and renewal price. No current provider price was verified here, so any number copied from an old review may be misleading.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security and maintenance checklist
- Keep the operating system, SteamCMD files, container image, and Quake Live server files updated through a controlled schedule.
- Run the game process as the dedicated non-root account; never use root for routine launches.
- Permit only required ports and restrict remote-console access by source address whenever possible.
- Use strong, unique administrative credentials and store them outside publicly shared configuration files.
- Back up configuration, map-rotation, ban, and administration files before updates or major edits.
- Collect process and system logs, and set an alert for repeated crashes, disk exhaustion, or unavailable ports.
- Document each instance’s directory, map rotation, port set, launch options, and restart procedure so another administrator can recover it.
- Test restoration on a separate directory or machine; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server process exits immediately
Run the launch script interactively as the service account and read the first error, rather than repeatedly restarting it. Check executable permissions, 32-bit or 64-bit library compatibility, ownership of mounted directories, and whether the downloaded app completed validation. If a Docker container exits, inspect its logs and verify that its environment variables and volume paths match the project’s current example.
Players cannot connect
Confirm that the process is listening on the intended address and port, then check the host firewall, provider firewall, and (for Docker) published-port rule in that order. Test from outside the hosting network. If several instances are running, look for a duplicate port assignment or a protocol mismatch such as opening TCP when the game traffic requires UDP.
Remote console does not work
Check that the console service is enabled, that the TCP port matches the configuration, and that credentials are correct. Confirm that your source address is allowed by the firewall. Do not solve a console failure by opening the port to every address; narrow the rule or use a private administrative path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Two instances interfere with each other
Give each server its own game, statistics, and remote-console ports, separate configuration and log directories, and an independent process definition. The Docker project specifically describes using unique port sets for multiple servers.
Players report unstable latency
Measure latency from several player locations over the actual play period and compare it with another region if available. Investigate provider congestion, routing changes, packet loss, and host contention before changing game settings. Moving the instance closer to the majority of players is often more effective than adding compute resources, but confirm with measurements.
Decision guide for common use cases
Private server for a few friends
Start with a small general VPS in the region that minimizes latency for the group. Install the dedicated application directly with SteamCMD if you want the fewest layers, or use Docker if you already maintain containers. Keep the firewall narrow and schedule automatic restarts and backups.
Persistent community server
Use a supported VPS or dedicated machine with administrator access, a documented recovery plan, monitoring, and a process manager. Select a region based on measured player latency and reserve unique ports for each game mode or ruleset. Verify the provider’s support and backup terms before migrating a public community.
Several concurrent instances
Choose infrastructure that permits multiple processes and enough tested headroom, then validate capacity with your own player load. Separate ports, directories, logs, and service definitions. A dedicated server may simplify isolation, but it is not automatically the better value if the instances are lightly used.
Operator who does not want server administration
Look for a currently advertised Quake Live package only after confirming, in writing, that it supports the dedicated application, your required modes, regions, ports, file access, backups, and migration. The evidence available here does not identify such a verified service, so do not treat a generic “game server” label as proof of compatibility.
If you would rather not run the machine yourself, Godlike.Host has a Quake Live server hosting page with its own game panel, a task scheduler, up to three free backups a day with restore, and free DDoS protection. It also offers a free Quake Live server for trying the panel; that free server must be extended every 3 hours, has limited panel features and is available in one location only.
What is known—and what is not—in 2026
Quake Live was released on August 6, 2010, and its dedicated-server distribution remains available through SteamCMD. The documented installation path and the community Docker example are sufficient to build a private or public server on general infrastructure. They do not establish a market-wide performance ranking, current commercial availability, or a safe minimum specification.
