For most players on the standard PS5, start with Performance Mode, enable the console’s VRR output on a compatible display, and leave ray tracing off. This combination keeps motion closest to 60 frames per second; PSFoundry measured roughly 55–60 fps in its 2026 base-PS5 summary. On PS5 Pro, use Resolution Mode at 60 Hz for the best overall balance: PSFoundry reports a locked 60 fps at 4K checkerboard with ray tracing available.

HDR should be calibrated on your own television rather than copied from a universal slider guide. Resident Evil 4’s image is intentionally built around shadows and silhouettes, so a correctly calibrated HDR picture can look dark without being faulty. If the picture looks soft, turn off chromatic aberration first, then consider disabling lens distortion.

Recommended settings at a glance

Console and mode Image and lighting Measured or targeted performance Display requirement
Base PS5 Performance Mode Lower image-resolution target than Resolution Mode; ray tracing optional About 55–60 fps in PSFoundry’s 2026 summary VRR is useful but not mandatory for a 60 Hz display
Base PS5 Resolution Mode Sharper checkerboard 4K target; dynamic resolution can drop in busy scenes Frame rate is less even than Performance Mode 4K display recommended; VRR can smooth variation
Base PS5 Resolution Mode with ray tracing Ray-traced reflections and lighting About 40–60 fps, according to PSFoundry (2026) VRR display recommended, although dips can fall below its operating window
PS5 Pro Resolution Mode, 60 Hz 4K checkerboard with ray tracing available Locked 60 fps in PSFoundry’s 2026 testing 4K display; HDR is recommended for an HDR-capable television
PS5 Pro Performance Mode, 120 Hz Performance-focused presentation Typically 85–105 fps, according to PSFoundry (2026) Compatible 120 Hz VRR display required to see the intended benefit
PS5 Pro Resolution Mode, 120 Hz with ray tracing Higher-resolution presentation with ray-traced effects Typically 70–90 fps, according to PSFoundry (2026) Compatible 120 Hz VRR display required

Choose the right graphics mode

Base PS5: Performance Mode is the safest default

Performance Mode is the correct starting point when consistent aiming, camera movement and combat response matter more than maximum reconstruction detail. TechRadar describes it as the frame-rate-friendly option that helps the game stay near 60 fps, while PSFoundry’s 2026 summary places typical performance around 55–60 fps. A VRR display can hide small frame-time changes, but it cannot turn this mode into a locked 60 fps in every scene.

Use this mode for a first playthrough, fast camera sensitivity, or any setup where motion clarity is more noticeable than fine distant texture detail. Leave ray tracing disabled if you want the cleanest frame pacing.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Base PS5: Resolution Mode for sharper reconstruction

Resolution Mode favors a sharper checkerboard 4K presentation. TechRadar notes that the game can reduce dynamic resolution in busy scenes, so the mode is not a guarantee of native 4K at every moment. Choose it when you sit close to a 4K screen, spend more time examining environments than tracking fast targets, or prefer detail over perfectly even motion.

Adding ray tracing to Resolution Mode produces richer reflections and lighting, but PSFoundry reports a broad 40–60 fps range on the base PS5. That range can move below the lower limit of a display’s VRR window, leaving visible judder or uneven camera motion even with VRR enabled.

PS5 Pro: Resolution Mode at 60 Hz

On PS5 Pro, Resolution Mode at 60 Hz is the image-quality recommendation. PSFoundry reports a locked 60 fps at 4K checkerboard, with ray tracing available. It provides the sharper presentation of the resolution-focused mode without the severe frame-rate trade-off seen on the base console.

PS5 Pro: 120 Hz modes

Performance Mode at 120 Hz targets a high refresh rate and typically runs between 85 and 105 fps in PSFoundry’s 2026 measurements. Resolution Mode at 120 Hz with ray tracing typically runs between 70 and 90 fps. These modes are intended for a display that accepts a 120 Hz signal and supports VRR; a 60 Hz television cannot show their higher refresh output.

Choose 120 Hz Performance when responsiveness is your priority. Choose 120 Hz Resolution with ray tracing when you want the lighting effects and still prefer more headroom than the base-PS5 ray-traced mode provides. The 60 Hz Pro mode remains the simpler choice if your television lacks 120 Hz support.

Enable VRR correctly on PS5

  1. Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
  2. Go to Screen and Video, then Video Output.
  3. Set VRR to Automatic.
  4. On the television or monitor, enable its gaming VRR function and select the calibrated game picture mode.
  5. Start Resident Evil 4 and test a demanding area with rapid camera movement before deciding whether to keep a ray-traced mode.

Variable refresh rate synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with the console’s changing frame output. It smooths frame-time variation inside the display’s supported range; it does not raise the game’s frame rate, remove a 40-fps dip, or guarantee that every mode remains above the display’s VRR floor. This limitation is why base-PS5 Resolution Mode with ray tracing can still feel uneven.

Is ray tracing worth turning on?

Ray tracing is worthwhile when reflections, wet surfaces and lighting nuance are more important to you than perfectly stable motion. On a base PS5, however, the combination of Resolution Mode and ray tracing can fall to 40 fps. If your display’s VRR range does not extend that low, the benefit of VRR will be incomplete.

  • Turn ray tracing off for the most consistent combat and camera movement on a base PS5.
  • Try ray tracing in Performance Mode if the game and your display offer that option and you accept a visual trade-off for reflections; TechRadar and PSFoundry identify Performance Mode as the frame-rate-oriented choice.
  • Use ray tracing in PS5 Pro Resolution Mode at 60 Hz when you want the effects without giving up a locked 60 fps, as reported by PSFoundry.
  • Use the Pro 120 Hz Resolution mode with ray tracing only with a compatible 120 Hz VRR display and when a typical 70–90 fps range suits your priorities.

Calibrate HDR without copying a universal number

HDR behavior depends on the television’s panel, its tone-mapping mode, the selected game picture preset and the room’s brightness. No single Resident Evil 4 slider value is correct for every OLED, LCD television or monitor.

  1. Put the display in its calibrated Game picture mode and enable HDR for the HDMI input used by the PS5.
  2. In Resident Evil 4, open the HDR calibration screen.
  3. Adjust the brightness pattern until the brightest symbol is just below clipping. If it disappears completely, lower the setting slightly.
  4. Check the dark pattern and raise or lower the black-level control until shadow detail remains visible without making the entire image gray.
  5. Recheck a dark in-game area after leaving the calibration screen. Make small changes rather than chasing a value copied from another panel.

TechRadar confirms that the game supports HDR and notes that disabling it exposes sRGB/Rec. 709 alternatives with different shadow behavior. SDR can be preferable if your display’s HDR tone mapping crushes blacks or looks dim, but compare the same dark scene in both modes before choosing.

Why Resident Evil 4 can look dark in HDR

Darkness is partly an artistic choice. Art director Hirofumi Nakaoka explained that the team did not simply make environments darker; it emphasized shadows and silhouettes to capture horror. Correct HDR therefore preserves intentional low-light areas instead of brightening every corner.

If important details disappear, first repeat the in-game calibration with the television in Game mode. Then verify the HDMI input is actually receiving HDR and that the television has not switched to a separate dim cinema preset. Increase the black-detail control only enough to reveal texture; lifting it too far produces gray blacks and weakens contrast.

Remove softness and unwanted optical effects

Chromatic aberration

Set chromatic aberration to Off for the cleanest image. PSFoundry notes that the effect can worsen checkerboard blur, creating colored fringes around high-contrast edges. Disabling it is especially useful in Resolution Mode, where you are choosing the mode for extra detail.

Lens distortion

Set lens distortion to Off if you want geometry to look more accurate and less stylized. Leave it on only when you prefer the cinematic camera treatment.

Depth of field

Depth of field is a style preference rather than a universal quality setting. Keep it on for the intended cinematic focus effect; turn it off for a flatter image that keeps more of the scene sharp during exploration and aiming.

Hair strands

Hair strands alter sheen and hair appearance. TechRadar observed no major performance dip from the option, so choose it by appearance rather than frame-rate expectations.

Camera and comfort settings

Field of view and camera wobble affect comfort more than image quality. Increase field of view if the default perspective feels cramped, but watch for edge distortion and a busier image. Reduce camera wobble if sprinting, attacks or explosions cause motion sickness. These controls are personal comfort adjustments, not universal improvements, so change one at a time and test for several minutes.

Display requirements for each setup

  • HDR: Use it only when the television or monitor supports HDR and is configured for the PS5 input. A calibrated SDR sRGB/Rec. 709 presentation is a valid alternative.
  • VRR: The display must support VRR, and its usable frequency range determines whether it can smooth a particular mode’s dips.
  • 120 Hz: PS5 Pro’s 120 Hz Performance and Resolution modes require a compatible 120 Hz display. A standard 60 Hz panel cannot display their intended refresh-rate advantage.
  • 4K: Resolution-focused modes are designed around a 4K display, although the game uses checkerboard reconstruction and can lower dynamic resolution in demanding scenes.

A practical setup procedure

  1. Select Performance Mode on a base PS5, or Resolution Mode at 60 Hz on a PS5 Pro.
  2. Set PS5 VRR to Automatic and enable VRR on the display.
  3. Enable HDR only after selecting the display’s Game picture preset.
  4. Run Resident Evil 4’s HDR calibration, keeping the brightest symbol just below clipping and dark detail visible.
  5. Turn chromatic aberration and lens distortion off.
  6. Choose depth of field, hair strands, field of view and camera wobble according to visual taste and comfort.
  7. Test a dark interior, a reflective outdoor area and a combat encounter. If motion feels uneven, disable ray tracing or move from Resolution Mode to Performance Mode on the base PS5.
  8. On PS5 Pro with a 120 Hz VRR display, compare the 120 Hz Performance and 120 Hz Resolution modes; retain the one whose motion and image trade-off you prefer.

Common problems and fixes

“VRR is on, but the game still judders.”

Check whether the selected mode is dropping below the display’s VRR operating range. Base-PS5 Resolution Mode with ray tracing can reach 40 fps, which may be below that range. Disable ray tracing or select Performance Mode.

“HDR looks washed out.”

Confirm that the television is in its Game picture mode and that HDR is active on the PS5 input. Re-run the game’s calibration, paying attention to black detail; an excessively high black-level setting creates gray shadows.

“The image looks blurry even in Resolution Mode.”

Disable chromatic aberration, which PSFoundry says can compound checkerboard softness. Also test lens distortion off. If distant detail remains softer than expected, remember that Resolution Mode can reduce dynamic resolution in busy scenes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The Pro 120 Hz option does not look different.”

Verify that the display accepts a 120 Hz signal and has VRR enabled. Without both capabilities, the mode cannot deliver its intended high-refresh presentation.

Final checklist before you start playing

  • Choose the mode that matches your console, not a setting copied from a different PS5 model.
  • Use VRR Automatic only with a display that supports VRR; it cannot repair frame rates below the display’s range.
  • Calibrate HDR by the symbols in the game, not by a universal numeric preset.
  • Disable chromatic aberration and lens distortion when clarity is more important than cinematic effects.
  • Treat depth of field, hair strands, field of view and camera wobble as preference and comfort controls.
  • Use a compatible 120 Hz VRR display for either PS5 Pro 120 Hz mode.
