For most remastered PS4 games, start with Resolution set to Automatic (or 2160p on a confirmed 4K display), Video Transfer Rate set to Auto, HDR set to On When Supported, and VRR and 120 Hz Output enabled only when both your display and the game support them. Leave ALLM enabled when available. Then choose the remaster’s own Performance or Quality/Resolution mode in its game settings; the PS5’s global Game Presets do not reliably control remastered PS4 software.
On a PS5 Pro in the CFI-7000 model group, also test Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games with a 4K or 1440p screen. If you see flicker, dropouts, incorrect HDR, or instability, troubleshoot the HDMI path first and disable the specific feature that causes the problem.
Recommended PS5 setup at a glance
These are the safest starting values for a remastered PS4 game. They preserve the highest compatible output without forcing processing that can make a non-HDR title or an incompatible display behave badly.

|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Automatic; use 2160p when a 4K display is confirmed | The display reports the wrong resolution or fails to show an image |
| Video Transfer Rate | Auto | 4K/120 Hz output flickers; test -1, then -2 |
| HDR | On When Supported | Use Always On only if you deliberately want non-HDR content converted to HDR |
| VRR | On when the TV/monitor and game support it | Turn off Apply to Unsupported Games if a title shows artifacts or instability |
| 120 Hz Output | On when the display and game support 120 Hz | Disable it if the display loses signal or reports an unsupported mode |
| ALLM | Enabled when supported | Turn it off only when your display handles automatic low-latency switching incorrectly |
| PS5 Pro: Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games | On for testing, if you have a CFI-7000 PS5 Pro and a 4K or 1440p display | Disable it when a particular PS4 title behaves unexpectedly |
These settings cannot create a capability that the game, console model, cable, HDMI port, or display does not have. A PS5 can output 4K and HDR, but the complete signal chain determines what reaches the screen.

Set the PS5 video output before launching the game
1. Choose the correct resolution
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic. Sony says Automatic detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the highest resolution it supports.
- If you have verified that the connected display is 4K and you want to lock the console to that output, select 2160p instead.
Automatic is preferable when you regularly switch between a 4K television, a 1440p monitor, and a 1080p display. A fixed 2160p value is useful only when the display really accepts it; it is not an image-quality upgrade for a panel that cannot display 4K.
2. Leave Video Transfer Rate on Auto
In the same Video Output screen, set 4K Video Transfer Rate (shown as Video Transfer Rate on some software versions) to Automatic. If the picture flickers, briefly blanks, or repeatedly reconnects—especially at 4K/120 Hz—Sony recommends trying -1, then -2. Those values limit some 4K/120 Hz and RGB output combinations to improve signal stability.
A lower transfer-rate setting is a compatibility adjustment, not a universal performance setting. Change it only while diagnosing a signal problem, and return to Auto if the display is stable there.
3. Use predictable HDR behavior
- Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR.
- Select On When Supported for the normal baseline.
- Open Adjust HDR in the same Video Output area and follow the three calibration screens whenever you change displays or reset the TV’s HDR picture mode.
On When Supported lets HDR-enabled games and apps use HDR while leaving SDR content in its normal range. Always On converts non-HDR games and apps to HDR. That conversion may be intentional if you prefer the appearance of your television’s HDR processing, but it can also make SDR remasters look excessively bright, muted, or incorrectly toned. Sony notes that HDR output depends on both an HDR-capable display and HDR-enabled content.
Enable VRR, 120 Hz, and ALLM only when the chain supports them
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
Turn on VRR under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output when your TV or monitor supports VRR and the remastered game supports it. VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with the console’s changing frame output, so it is most useful when a title cannot hold a perfectly consistent frame rate.

The Apply to Unsupported Games option can smooth frame-rate fluctuations in titles that do not officially list VRR support. Treat it as a compatibility experiment rather than a universal improvement. If a game develops flicker, uneven motion, image corruption, or another unexpected behavior, turn that option off and retest. If the title remains problematic, disable VRR for that session.
120 Hz Output
Enable 120 Hz Output when the display and the game support a 120 Hz frame rate. Sony describes this switch as enabling 120 Hz video output for compatible TVs and games; it does not force every game to render at 120 frames per second.
Recommended Free Tools
A remastered PS4 game may offer a 120 Hz mode, a 60 Hz mode, or no high-refresh option at all. If your monitor reports an unsupported signal, goes black, or repeatedly reconnects after enabling 120 Hz, switch it off and confirm the display’s HDMI specifications before trying again.
Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
Leave ALLM enabled when your television supports it. ALLM allows the TV to switch automatically to its low-latency game picture mode. Sony notes that VRR can trigger ALLM automatically on compatible equipment, so the TV may change picture modes when a game starts or when VRR becomes active.
Choose the remaster’s own graphics mode
The PS5’s Game Presets menu offers Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, but Sony states that these presets apply only to PS5 games and may not apply to every title. A remastered PS4 game therefore needs its own in-game graphics setting whenever the developer provides one.

Open the game’s Options, Settings, or Graphics menu after launching it. The labels differ by game, but the practical choice is usually between a Performance option that favors smoother motion and a Quality, Fidelity, or Resolution option that favors more image detail.
| Decision factor | Performance setting | Quality/Resolution setting |
|---|---|---|
| Motion and frame-rate consistency | Prioritizes a higher or steadier frame rate; the exact target is title-specific | May use a lower or less consistent frame rate to preserve visual detail |
| Rendering resolution and detail | May reduce resolution or selected effects to maintain speed | Prioritizes higher resolution, denser effects, shadows, or draw distance when the game offers them |
| HDR presentation | Uses the game’s HDR implementation; the mode does not automatically improve HDR | Uses the same HDR implementation unless the title explicitly changes its HDR pipeline |
| VRR and 120 Hz behavior | Often benefits more from VRR because frame output can vary, but support must be verified per title | May target a fixed cinematic frame rate; VRR can still help if the game supports it |
| Stability | Can expose issues with 120 Hz, VRR, or a particular display | Can be more stable on a 60 Hz display, but this depends on the game and console output |
There is no universal winner. Compare the two modes using the same scene, camera movement, and display picture preset. Pick Performance when camera pans and combat feel more important than extra detail; pick Quality/Resolution when fine geometry, distant objects, or a steadier cinematic presentation matter more. The exact resolution and frame-rate targets are specific to each remaster, so consult that title’s own documentation rather than assuming a mode label guarantees a particular number.
HDR setup that avoids washed-out or overly dark remasters
HDR problems are often caused by a mismatch between the console setting and the television’s input mode rather than by the game itself. Confirm that the HDMI input is configured for the TV’s full-bandwidth or enhanced signal mode if the manufacturer requires such a setting, then run the PS5’s Adjust HDR procedure again.
- If an HDR game looks gray or desaturated, check that the television actually entered HDR mode when the game launched.
- If highlights clip or the image looks unnaturally bright, use On When Supported instead of Always On and repeat Adjust HDR.
- If only one title looks wrong, check that title’s own HDR slider or calibration screen before changing the global PS5 output.
- Remember that an SDR remaster is not made into native HDR merely by selecting Always On; the PS5 is converting the signal.
Use the display’s HDR picture preset consistently while comparing modes. Switching between a TV’s Cinema, Game, and HDR presets changes the result independently of the PS5’s graphics option.
PS5 Pro: Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games
On PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 model group, enable Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games to try higher video quality in compatible PS4 software, including remasters that still run as PS4 applications. Sony requires a 4K or 1440p display for this option and says to turn it off if unexpected behavior appears.

This setting is not available on other PS5 model groups. It is also not a guarantee that every remaster will gain the same amount of detail or that the game’s own Performance/Quality choices will disappear. Treat it as a per-title enhancement:
- Open Settings > Screen and Video and locate the PS4-game image-quality enhancement option.
- Enable it, launch the remastered game, and inspect fine geometry, distant textures, and motion in a repeatable scene.
- Leave it enabled only if the game remains stable and the image improves on your display.
- Disable it and retest if you see glitches, crashes, incorrect rendering, or another behavior that was not present before.
Because Sony does not publish a universal frame-rate or percentage improvement for this feature, judge it by the individual title and your own display rather than expecting a fixed performance gain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need HDMI 2.1 for 4K/120 Hz?
For 4K at 120 Hz, the television or monitor must support that mode on a suitable HDMI input. In practice, that is commonly the port identified as HDMI 2.1, but the port’s published specifications—not the label alone—determine whether it accepts 4K/120 Hz, HDR, VRR, and the required bandwidth.
Use the HDMI port specified for high-refresh 4K, connect the PS5 directly to the display while diagnosing the setup, and use the cable included with the PS5 or an Ultra-High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. An older receiver, soundbar passthrough, or switch box can limit the signal even when the TV itself supports the target mode.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Connection part | What to verify | Typical symptom when it is inadequate |
|---|---|---|
| Display panel | 4K resolution, HDR, VRR, and 120 Hz support as required by the game | The desired option is unavailable or the display falls back to a lower mode |
| HDMI input | Use the specific input rated for 4K/120 Hz and enhanced bandwidth | 4K works at 60 Hz but 120 Hz is missing or unstable |
| Cable | PS5-supplied cable or certified Ultra-High-Speed HDMI cable | Flicker, black screens, intermittent signal, or handshake failures |
| Receiver, switch, or soundbar | Every device in the path must pass the same resolution, refresh, HDR, and VRR features | Direct connection works but the routed connection does not |
| Firmware | Update the display and any HDMI equipment | Features remain unavailable despite correct hardware specifications |
HDMI 2.1 is therefore a requirement of the complete 4K/120-capable path, not a setting that makes a 60 Hz display run at 120 Hz. If your remaster is capped at 60 Hz, a correctly configured HDMI 2.0 path may be sufficient for that title’s actual output.

Troubleshoot flicker, black screens, and incorrect modes
Work through the checks in this order so that you change one variable at a time.
- Confirm the display’s specification. Check the TV or monitor manual for the exact HDMI input that supports the target resolution and refresh rate. Do not assume every port has identical capabilities.
- Connect the PS5 directly. Temporarily remove receivers, switch boxes, and passthrough devices. If direct connection fixes the problem, the removed device is the bottleneck.
- Replace or reseat the cable. Use the cable included with the PS5 or an Ultra-High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. Make sure both connectors are fully inserted.
- Update firmware. Install current TV or monitor firmware and restart the display and console.
- Restore conservative PS5 output values. Set Resolution to Automatic (or 2160p only when 4K is confirmed) and Video Transfer Rate to Auto.
- Reduce transfer rate only for flicker. If 4K/120 Hz still flickers, test Video Transfer Rate at -1 and then -2. Keep the first stable value.
- Test 120 Hz separately. Turn 120 Hz Output off, launch the game, and then re-enable it. If the problem returns only at 120 Hz, verify the display port, cable, and game support.
- Test VRR separately. Turn off Apply to Unsupported Games first. If the title still misbehaves, disable VRR for that game and compare motion at a fixed refresh rate.
- Recalibrate HDR. Check the TV’s HDR mode and run Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR. Confirm that the game actually supports HDR before judging the result.
- Check PS5 Pro enhancement. On a CFI-7000 PS5 Pro, disable Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games and retest any title that shows unexpected rendering or stability problems.
If the display works at 4K/60 Hz but not 4K/120 Hz, the most likely area to investigate is the 120 Hz path: the specific HDMI port, cable rating, intermediate equipment, or the game’s support. If HDR fails in every title, investigate the display input and HDR configuration before changing an individual game’s graphics mode.
Practical presets for common setups
4K television limited to 60 Hz
Use Resolution Automatic, Video Transfer Rate Auto, HDR On When Supported, and VRR only if the TV and remaster support it. Leave 120 Hz Output off if the television cannot accept 120 Hz. In the game, choose Performance or Quality according to motion versus detail; the console cannot add a 120 Hz option the panel lacks.
4K/120 Hz television with VRR
Use the television’s certified high-bandwidth HDMI input, the PS5-supplied or Ultra-High-Speed cable, Resolution Automatic, Video Transfer Rate Auto, HDR On When Supported, VRR on, 120 Hz Output on, and ALLM enabled. If flicker appears, test -1 or -2 for Video Transfer Rate before changing the game’s graphics mode.
1440p gaming monitor
Use Automatic resolution so the PS5 can negotiate the monitor’s supported mode. Enable HDR, VRR, or 120 Hz only when the monitor lists those features for the connected input. A PS5 Pro in the CFI-7000 group can use Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games with a 1440p display, but disable it if a particular remaster becomes unstable.
PS5 Pro with a 4K display
Start with the standard output values, then test Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games per remaster. Keep the game’s own Performance/Quality selection separate from the PS5 Pro enhancement; they control different layers of the experience and neither has a universal setting that is best for every title.
What to check before settling on a setting
- Verify the game is running its remastered version and not an unpatched original PS4 build.
- Record which in-game mode is active before comparing image quality or motion.
- Check the display’s on-screen information for the actual resolution, HDR state, and refresh rate.
- Change only one global option at a time, then repeat the same scene.
- Prefer a stable 60 Hz or VRR presentation over a nominal 120 Hz mode that causes dropouts.
- Keep Always On HDR only when you intentionally prefer the converted appearance across SDR games and apps.
The best PS5 settings are therefore a compatible baseline plus a title-specific graphics choice. Automatic resolution, Auto transfer, On When Supported HDR, conditional VRR and 120 Hz, and enabled ALLM provide the broadest starting point; the display’s capabilities and the remaster’s own menu decide what you can actually use.
