For most classic PlayStation RPGs, use Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output with Resolution on Automatic, HDR on When Supported, VRR enabled only when your display supports it, and your television’s Game Mode turned on. Download a game from the Classics Catalog when possible; streaming needs a reliable connection and can vary with network conditions.
Start with a safe PS5 baseline
Classic PlayStation RPGs were designed for standard-dynamic-range (SDR) televisions and fixed refresh rates. The PS5 can output them through a modern 4K or high-refresh display, but a higher output number does not automatically make the original artwork sharper or more faithful. Begin with the console’s neutral settings, then adjust a specific game’s own presentation options.
| PS5 setting | Recommended starting value | What it does for a classic RPG |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Automatic | Selects the highest resolution your television reports as supported. |
| HDR | On When Supported | Keeps non-HDR games in SDR instead of converting them to HDR. |
| Adjust HDR | Run the calibration | Sets the console’s HDR output for the display when HDR content is used. |
| VRR | On, if the display supports it | Allows refresh-rate adjustment for compatible games and displays. |
| Apply to Unsupported Games | Off initially | An optional VRR treatment whose behavior can differ by television, game and visual mode. |
| 120 Hz Output | On, if the display supports 120 Hz | Allows compatible displays and games to use 120 Hz; it does not make a fixed-rate RPG run at 120 frames per second. |
| Video Transfer Rate | Automatic | Uses the normal signal bandwidth; lower it to -1 or -2 only when troubleshooting flicker. |
Resolution: leave Automatic unless you have a reason to lock it
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Resolution and select Automatic. Sony’s PS5 guidance says Automatic chooses the highest resolution the connected television supports. Locking 4K can be useful for a particular display or troubleshooting case, while 1440p can be useful when that is the panel’s preferred mode, but neither option creates additional detail in a low-resolution classic release.
If changing resolution causes a blank screen or an unstable signal, return to Automatic after the display reconnects. Resolution is a console-output choice, not an emulator filter, so it should not be used as the main way to remove softness around old sprites or text.

HDR: choose On When Supported for original-era SDR art
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR, select On When Supported, then run Adjust HDR. This leaves a non-HDR game in SDR. Sony describes Always On differently: it converts games and apps that are not HDR-compatible to HDR output. That conversion may be attractive for a modern HDR title, but it changes the output treatment of a game whose colors and contrast were authored for SDR.
Use Always On only as a deliberate display experiment. Compare a representative scene containing dark dungeons, bright menus and saturated spell effects; if shadow detail, text contrast or color balance looks less natural, return to On When Supported. Do not assume that the HDR label means a classic game has gained an HDR remaster.
VRR: helpful only when the complete chain supports it
Turn on VRR in the same Video Output area when your television or monitor supports it. Sony says VRR adjusts the display’s refresh rate in real time for compatible TVs and games. It can smooth irregular timing in a supported title, but it is not a universal image-quality upgrade and cannot add detail to a PS1-era render.

Leave Apply to Unsupported Games off at first. Sony warns that this optional setting can produce different results depending on the television, game and visual mode, including unexpected behavior. If one title shows uneven scrolling or another display problem, test the option for that title alone and keep the setting off again if it introduces flicker, brightness changes or other artifacts.
120 Hz Output: enable the capability, not an imaginary frame-rate boost
Enable 120 Hz Output if your display supports 120 Hz. The setting permits 120-Hz output for displays and games that support that frame rate; it does not turn a fixed-rate classic RPG into a 120-fps game. A turn-based battle system may therefore look exactly as it did with 60-Hz output, aside from any display processing.

If enabling 120 Hz causes handshake failures, no picture or an unstable signal, turn it off. Sony specifically advises disabling it when the display has output problems. Re-enable it after checking the cable, input and television mode.
Make the picture faithful inside the game
The PS5’s system video pages cover output resolution, HDR, VRR, 120 Hz, RGB range and related signal controls. They do not document a universal PS5-wide CRT filter, scanline filter or integer-scaling control. Aspect ratio, smoothing, borders and pixel presentation therefore depend on the individual classic release, its emulator layer and any in-game menu.

Pause the game and inspect its options before changing advanced television processing. A release may offer choices such as an original or modern aspect ratio, smoothing, a border treatment or a pixel-preservation mode. The exact labels differ by title, so treat the game’s own menu as authoritative for that release.
There is no single setting that removes every blur or recreates a CRT image on every classic game. If the release has no presentation controls, the PS5 can still provide a stable output signal, but it cannot supply a guaranteed integer scale or scanline effect through a documented global switch.

Set up the display and signal step by step
- Connect the console directly to the display. Use an HDMI input that supports the features you intend to use. For troubleshooting, bypass an older receiver or switch so that there is one direct PS5-to-display connection.
- Turn on the television’s Game Mode. The label varies by manufacturer. Sony recommends trying Game Mode when streaming PlayStation Plus games because it can reduce display processing and latency.
- Open the PS5 video menu. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Set Resolution to Automatic, HDR to On When Supported, and run Adjust HDR.
- Match VRR to the display. Enable VRR only if the television or monitor supports it. Keep Apply to Unsupported Games off until a particular title has been checked.
- Set the high-refresh option. Enable 120 Hz Output when the display supports it. If the picture disappears or becomes unstable, turn the option off and continue troubleshooting the connection.
- Open the game’s own options. Select the release’s preferred aspect ratio, smoothing or pixel mode after viewing text, scrolling and dark scenes.
- Save a per-title note. If you use different presets for different games, record the choice beside the game’s name. That avoids changing global settings unnecessarily when only one release benefits from an exception.
Download or stream a classic RPG?
Where to find eligible downloads
On PS5, open Games home screen > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog. Eligible games can be downloaded with the appropriate membership. A local download avoids the image-quality variation and queue risk associated with sending the game continuously over the internet, so it is generally the steadier choice when both options are offered.
What streaming requires
Streaming PlayStation Plus games requires the appropriate plan and a broadband connection of at least 5 Mbps. Sony’s support guidance lists 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures describe connection requirements, not a guarantee of latency or image quality: household traffic, Wi-Fi interference, distance to the service and regional capacity can still affect the experience.
Use the display’s Game Mode when streaming, as Sony recommends trying that mode for PlayStation Plus streaming. If text looks soft or controls feel delayed, download the game instead when a local version is available. A faster connection cannot turn a release’s original resolution into a modern high-resolution remaster.
Check catalog and membership conditions first
Sony identifies the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming as benefits of the PlayStation Plus Premium tier. The library changes over time and varies by membership tier and region. Search the Classics Catalog in your own account before subscribing or assuming that a particular RPG is included; a title listed in one country’s catalog may not be available in another.

Cable, port and television requirements
Use the right HDMI cable and input
Sony’s PS5 FAQ recommends the HDMI cable included with the console. If you need a replacement, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Sony states that HDMI 2.1 supports 4K at 120 Hz and advises using an HDMI 2.1 input for those features.
Cable capability is only one part of the chain. A cable cannot add HDR, VRR or 120 Hz support that the television or monitor does not have. Check the display’s specifications and its on-screen menu, then use the input identified for the desired feature; some displays reserve only one or two ports for their highest bandwidth.
Use this physical checklist
- Connect the PS5 directly to a display input that supports the target mode.
- Start with the included cable; replace it with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if the original is unavailable or suspected to be faulty.
- Confirm the display’s Game Mode, HDR, VRR and 120 Hz capabilities in its own settings.
- Run Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR after the display is configured.
- Keep an older receiver or switch out of the path while diagnosing flicker, black screens or missing features.
Troubleshoot common problems
Flicker or intermittent picture
First reseat both HDMI ends and test the included cable with a direct connection. Confirm that the display input is the one intended for the PS5’s high-bandwidth features. If flicker remains, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and try -1, then -2. Sony says lowering the transfer rate limits bandwidth and may improve picture stability.
After stability returns, re-enable features one at a time. This identifies whether 120 Hz, VRR, an intermediate device or a display mode is responsible instead of changing several variables at once.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Turn 120 Hz Output off if the display cannot maintain the signal. Return Resolution to Automatic once you regain access to the menu. Try another compatible HDMI input and remove an older receiver or switch from the chain. Do not buy a new cable as a substitute for a display that lacks the required port or feature.

Colors look wrong or highlights are harsh
Check whether HDR is set to Always On. That mode converts non-HDR games to HDR output; return to On When Supported for a classic title whose artwork was authored in SDR, then run Adjust HDR again. Compare the same dark and bright scenes before deciding whether a game-specific preset or the television’s picture mode is responsible.
Scrolling feels uneven with VRR enabled
Disable Apply to Unsupported Games first, because Sony warns that behavior varies by title, display and visual mode. If the game remains uncomfortable, test VRR off for that release while leaving it available for compatible modern games. VRR cannot correct every fixed-rate or emulator-timing characteristic.
Streaming is blurry or controls feel delayed
Confirm that the connection meets the 5 Mbps minimum, with 15 Mbps required for 1080p streaming according to Sony’s guidance. Stop other high-bandwidth activity, prefer a stable wired connection when practical, and use Game Mode on the display. If the RPG is downloadable, use the local installation to remove network variability from the picture path.
Practical presets for different setups
4K television with HDR, VRR and 120 Hz
Use Resolution Automatic, HDR On When Supported, Adjust HDR completed, VRR On, Apply to Unsupported Games Off, and 120 Hz Output On. Use the television’s Game Mode and the included or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable connected directly to an HDMI 2.1-capable input. Treat the game’s own smoothing and aspect-ratio menu as the place to tune its classic presentation.
4K television with HDR but no VRR
Keep Resolution Automatic and HDR On When Supported, run Adjust HDR, and leave VRR and Apply to Unsupported Games off. 120 Hz Output can remain off unless the display explicitly supports it and you have a compatible title that benefits. Game Mode still avoids unnecessary television processing.
Older 1080p display
Leave Resolution on Automatic so the PS5 negotiates the display’s supported output. HDR, VRR and 120 Hz should be enabled only when the display actually supports each feature. If it does not, the classic game’s own presentation settings remain the meaningful controls for smoothing, borders and aspect ratio.
Mostly streaming from PlayStation Plus
Use Game Mode, keep HDR On When Supported, and verify a stable connection of at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. If a favorite RPG is offered as a download, prefer that version when you want consistent text clarity and response.
Quick Recap
What these settings can and cannot change
- They can change: the signal resolution negotiated with the display, whether SDR content is converted to HDR, whether compatible timing features are available, and how much television processing is applied.
- They cannot change: the original game’s authored resolution, create a universal CRT or scanline filter, guarantee 120 frames per second, or make an unavailable regional catalog title downloadable.
- They depend on the whole setup: VRR and 120 Hz require a compatible display and a stable HDMI path; streaming quality additionally depends on the network and service conditions.
