The best PS5 setup for a horror game is not one universal preset. Start by comparing stereo with a personalized or preset 3D-audio profile on your headphones, use Audio Focus only when quiet details are difficult to hear, and calibrate TV-speaker 3D audio from your normal seat. Treat HDR separately: the PS5 and display must support the chosen signal, while the final brightness and tone mapping depend on your TV and the individual game.
A reliable starting setup
Use this sequence before changing detailed settings:
- Connect compatible headphones, or choose the TV-speaker path if you cannot use headphones.
- For headphones, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). Create a personalized profile by following the position and direction prompts, or audition the five available presets.
- Turn on Enable 3D Audio for Headphones, then compare the same directional scene in 3D audio and stereo at a comfortable, similar volume.
- If faint ambience or dialogue remains difficult to hear, audition Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus at Weak or Medium before considering Strong.
- For TV speakers, measure the room under Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV) while sitting where you normally play, then compare stereo and 3D audio.
- For HDR, confirm the screen and the entire connection path support the signal. Use the game’s own HDR calibration image or prompts rather than copying a single brightness value from another display.
These controls are documented in Sony’s PS5 audio-output guide, 3D-audio setup guide, and Audio Focus guide. They provide options to compare, not proof that one setting improves every horror game.

Connect a compatible device
Connect your wired or wireless headphones and confirm that the PS5 recognizes the device. Compatibility and available controls vary by hardware; check the headset maker’s instructions if a setting shown below is missing. Sony’s audio-output documentation explains that the controls exposed by the console depend on the connected device.
#1 Best Overall

Create a personalized profile
- Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Choose the option to create a personalized profile.
- Listen to the sounds played from different positions and answer the prompts about where each sound appears to come from and which direction it moves.
- Save the profile and make sure Enable 3D Audio for Headphones is on.
The profile can be applied or replaced by a preset later. A personalized profile is worth trying when you are the only person using the console because it is based on your responses rather than a generic listener model.
Try all five presets before deciding
If you want a faster setup, select each of the five profiles in the same menu and use one repeatable scene to compare them. Keep the game volume similar and listen for whether a sound is easier to place in front, behind, above or to the side. Do not assume the profile with the largest effect is the most accurate; comfort and stable directional placement matter more during a long session.
With 3D audio disabled, the PS5 returns to stereo. Compare that unprocessed alternative as well. Some listeners prefer stereo’s clearer center image or find that a particular game’s own mix sounds more natural without console virtualization. Sony describes 3D audio as immersive surround sound that can make you feel inside the game, but the support material does not establish a horror-game performance advantage for any profile.
Adjust the output device and headset controls
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output to verify the selected output device and headphone-output options. On supported PlayStation headsets, the Control Center’s Sound panel can expose equalizer presets or a custom mode. Sony describes the common choices as follows:
| Option | What it changes | How to use it for horror |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Balances low and high frequencies. | Use as the neutral reference when comparing other choices. |
| Bass Boost | Emphasizes low frequencies. | Audition it if rumbles and impacts feel too thin, but reduce it if ambience becomes muddy. |
| Shooter | Emphasizes shooting and footsteps. | It may make transient sounds prominent, but it is not a horror-specific recommendation. |
| Custom | Lets you choose your own EQ curve where supported. | Make small changes and return to Standard if voices, ambience or effects become unnatural. |
The names and availability of these controls depend on the connected headset. Treat them as listening options to audition, not as evidence that one EQ is optimal for every title.

Make quiet horror details easier to hear with Audio Focus
Audio Focus is a headphone-only adjustment that can be used with games, voice chat and media apps. Open Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus, or open Control Center, select Sound, then choose Audio Focus.
Choose a focus type and level
- Boost Low Pitch: emphasizes lower-frequency content.
- Boost Voices: emphasizes speech.
- Boost High Pitch: emphasizes higher-frequency details such as footsteps and metallic noises.
- Boost Quiet Sounds: raises low-volume sounds broadly.
Each focus type has Weak, Medium and Strong levels, with separate left and right adjustment available. For a horror mix in which whispers, distant movement or room tone disappear, start with Boost Quiet Sounds or Boost High Pitch at Weak. Those choices are practical settings to test based on Sony’s descriptions, not a Sony horror preset or a guarantee that every game will reveal additional intended cues.
Use the built-in preview, then check the main headphone volume. Sony warns that Audio Focus can make headphone output loud. Lower the volume before enabling it, raise it gradually, and stop if the result is fatiguing or harsh.
TV speakers: measure the room, not just the console
TV speakers produce a room-dependent result, so the measurement position matters. Go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV) and follow the prompts using the wireless controller’s built-in microphone.
- Place the TV and seating as they are during normal play.
- Sit in your usual position, centered where possible.
- Run the room measurement and let the console process the result.
- Play a scene with clear directional movement and compare stereo with 3D audio.
Measure again if the TV position, seating position or room environment changes. Curtains, furniture and a moved screen can alter the acoustic path enough to change the result.

Fix a measurement that does not sound right
- Unblock the TV speakers and make sure nothing is covering the microphone or speaker openings.
- If the result is not applied, sit centered and repeat the measurement.
- Temporarily disable additional surround or sound-processing modes in the TV so they do not stack with the PS5’s processing.
- Adjust TV volume if the perceived level changes after switching between stereo and 3D.
Sony’s 3D-audio support page documents the measurement and these troubleshooting directions. TV-speaker 3D audio is a separate setup flow from headphone 3D audio; a profile made for one does not calibrate the other.

Check the complete signal path
Sony states that all PS5 consoles have 4K and HDR capability, while the available image quality depends on the rest of the home-entertainment setup. The screen, HDMI connection, receiver or soundbar pass-through, and selected input mode all need to support the signal you want to use.
For a 4K output path, connect a compatible 4K screen, then open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and set Resolution to 2160p if that is appropriate for your display. The official instructions are in Sony’s PS5 resolution guide. A 2160p setting is a 4K-resolution choice; it is not a universal requirement for HDR.
Use the TV’s HDR mode correctly
Enable the display’s HDR input mode according to its manual and make sure the PS5 is connected to an HDMI port that accepts the desired bandwidth. If an intermediate receiver or switch is in the chain, verify its HDR support as well. If the PS5 reports that HDR is unavailable, test a direct connection to the display to identify whether the intermediate device is the limitation.
Calibrate inside each game
There is no single brightness, black-level or tone-mapping value that is best for horror games. Displays differ in peak brightness and black-level behavior, and games expose different calibration screens. When a title provides an HDR setup page, follow its supplied image or prompts: raise the brightness until the instructions say a symbol is barely visible, or use the game’s stated reference point. Do not copy values from a different TV, and do not infer that PS5 HDR support guarantees the same shadow detail on every panel.

Some games also offer their own audio, dynamic-range or subtitle controls. Use those menus after the console-level setup because a game can override or reinterpret output behavior.
Console settings versus per-game presets
PS5 game presets can change how supported titles start, but they are not universal. Sony notes that some presets may not apply to every PS5 game. Open the game-presets controls from the PS5 settings when available, then verify the actual options in the horror game’s own menu.
| Decision | Console-level choice | What to verify in the game |
|---|---|---|
| Spatial audio | Headphone or TV-speaker 3D audio, or stereo. | Whether the title has its own binaural, surround or headphone mode. |
| Dynamic range | Audio Focus and headset EQ. | Night, wide, compressed or speaker-oriented mix options, if offered. |
| Picture | HDR output and resolution. | HDR calibration image, paper-white control, black level and tone mapping, if offered. |
| Accessibility | Audio Focus and console volume. | Subtitles, speaker labels, visual indicators and independent voice/effect sliders. |
Do not enable two competing virtual-surround systems without testing them. If a game has a headphone-binaural mode and the TV or headset adds another surround layer, compare both combinations and keep the one that preserves stable positioning.
Choose headphones or TV speakers
| Your situation | Best first test | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Shared room or late-night play | Headphones with a personalized 3D profile, then stereo. | Direct output avoids disturbing others and does not depend on room reflections. |
| Playing from a fixed sofa with no headphones | Measure TV-speaker 3D audio from that seat. | The console can tailor processing to the room and listening position. |
| Quiet dialogue or distant ambience is masked | Audio Focus at Weak, then Medium if needed. | It targets quiet or selected frequency ranges without changing the game’s menus. |
| Effects sound boomy or tiring | Return to Standard EQ or stereo and lower volume. | Extra bass or processing can obscure voices and room tone. |
A repeatable comparison method
Changing several controls at once makes it impossible to know what helped. Use one scene with a sound that moves around the player, a quiet environmental layer and spoken dialogue.

Troubleshooting checklist
3D audio is unavailable
- Confirm the headphones are connected and selected under Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Check whether the device supports the relevant PS5 controls; some options are hardware-dependent.
- Restart the console and reconnect the headset if the output device does not appear.
Directional sounds seem misplaced
- Compare stereo and 3D audio at matched volume.
- Recreate the personalized profile and answer the position prompts carefully.
- For TV speakers, repeat the room measurement from the centered normal seat.
- Disable extra TV surround processing before judging the PS5 result.
Audio becomes too loud after Audio Focus
- Lower headphone volume before enabling the feature.
- Use the preview and start at Weak rather than Strong.
- Check left and right adjustments separately if one ear is noticeably louder.
HDR looks gray, crushed or overly dark
- Confirm the display input and HDMI path support HDR.
- Test a direct PS5-to-display connection to isolate a receiver or switch.
- Run the game’s HDR calibration again after changing the TV’s picture mode.
- Check the TV’s own HDR instructions; PS5 capability does not determine a panel’s tone mapping.
Recommended final profiles
Headphone profile
Use a personalized 3D profile if it produces stable placement; otherwise keep the preset that sounds most natural. Keep Standard EQ as the reference, and add Weak Boost Quiet Sounds or Boost High Pitch only when you have confirmed that the extra emphasis helps without fatigue.
TV-speaker profile
Measure 3D audio from the normal centered seat, disable overlapping TV surround modes, and compare against stereo. Re-measure whenever the room or seating changes.
HDR profile
Use the highest mode that your display and connection path explicitly support, then follow each game’s HDR calibration screen. Treat 4K resolution, HDR availability and in-game tone mapping as separate decisions.

The practical winner is the configuration that lets you place sounds reliably, hear quiet information without unsafe volume, and retain shadow detail on your particular screen. PS5’s menus make those comparisons straightforward, but your headphones, room, TV and game mix determine the final choice.
