The best PS5 setup for a long open-world RPG starts in the game itself, not with a universal console preset. Choose the title’s own Performance Mode when responsive motion matters, or Resolution Mode when image detail matters; then use PS5 Game Presets as a default for compatible games. Configure HDR in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, and tailor accessibility separately at the console and game levels. Exact frame rate, resolution, HDR behavior, and accessibility features depend on the specific RPG and display, so verify the options shown by your game.
Start with the RPG’s own graphics settings
Launch the RPG and open its graphics, display, or video menu before changing PS5-wide preferences. A console preset can express a preference, but it cannot add a mode that the game does not provide or tell you the exact compromises made by that title.
Performance mode or resolution mode?
| Player priority | Try this mode | What it generally prioritizes | What you must verify in the game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smoother camera movement and more responsive controls | Performance Mode, if offered | Motion and responsiveness over maximum image detail | The game’s stated frame-rate target, resolution behavior, visual reductions, and whether the mode is available in every area |
| Fine environmental detail, effects, or a higher image-quality target | Resolution Mode, if offered | Image quality over motion performance | The actual resolution method, frame-rate target, and any limits on effects or refresh behavior |
| No clear preference yet | Test both | A direct comparison on your display and with your controls | Use the same location, camera movement, and lighting conditions before deciding |
PlayStation Support describes the system preference this way: “Make motion in your game smoother with performance mode, or have higher graphic quality in resolution mode.” That is a description of the intended trade-off, not a promise of a particular frame rate or resolution for an unnamed RPG. One game’s Performance Mode may use a different target or reconstruction method from another’s, and a patch can change the implementation.

A practical way to test a long-session choice
- Load a representative save in an area with exploration, combat, and the camera movement you use most.
- Switch to the first mode and spend several minutes panning the camera, riding or traveling through the world, and fighting if possible.
- Note whether camera movement, aiming, menus, and transitions feel comfortable. Also check whether the image remains readable at your normal seating distance.
- Repeat in the other available mode without changing the display’s picture settings.
- Keep the mode that reduces the problem you notice most. If a game offers a separate toggle for effects or image quality, read its description rather than assuming it behaves like the console preset.
If the game exposes only one graphics mode, the PS5 cannot manufacture a second one. If the game’s menu uses different names, follow its explanation and current developer documentation. Do not infer a frame rate, resolution, or HDR authoring decision from the mode name alone.

Recheck after updates
Game patches can add modes, change targets, or alter visual quality. When an update changes the graphics menu, repeat the short comparison instead of assuming your previous choice still has the same trade-offs.
Set a PS5 default with Game Presets
If you regularly play compatible titles, PS5 can store a preference for Performance Mode or Resolution Mode. This is a convenience setting, not a per-game specification.
Exact menu path
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Open Game Presets.
- Choose the available performance or resolution preference.
- Return to the RPG and confirm the game’s own graphics menu; apply its setting if it did not adopt the preset automatically.
The preset applies only to games that offer the corresponding modes, and some settings may not apply to every game. A title can ignore the preference, expose only one mode, or require you to select the option inside the game. Treat the preset as your default request, then treat the title’s menu as the authority.

When a preset appears to do nothing
- The RPG may not offer Performance Mode or Resolution Mode.
- The game may use different terminology or require an in-game confirmation.
- The title may have separate modes for different activities or display configurations.
- An update may have changed the available options.
Check the game’s current support information when the menu and preset disagree. Do not use the preset as evidence that a particular frame rate or resolution is active.
Configure HDR on PS5
HDR is controlled in PS5 Video Output, but the result depends on the entire home-entertainment chain: the RPG, console output, display capabilities, HDMI connection, and the display’s own picture mode. A display that accepts an HDR signal does not make every game HDR-authored.
Turn HDR on and calibrate it
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Choose Screen and Video.
- Select Video Output.
- Open HDR and choose the behavior that matches your preference.
- Return to Video Output and select Adjust HDR.
- Follow the on-screen calibration prompts while the display is in the picture mode you intend to use for games.
PlayStation notes that HDR image-quality availability depends on the home entertainment setup. Follow the display manufacturer’s instructions for enabling its HDR input and gaming picture mode; no single television or monitor configuration can be assumed for every reader.

Always On versus On When Supported
| PS5 HDR choice | Behavior | Choose it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| On When Supported | HDR-capable content uses HDR; unsupported content remains SDR | You want SDR games and apps to stay SDR and prefer the source content’s intended format | A game must actually support HDR for HDR output; the setting does not add HDR authoring |
| Always On | The PS5 converts even unsupported games and apps to HDR output | You prefer a consistent HDR output signal and have tuned the display for that conversion | Converted SDR is not the same as content authored for HDR, and the result can differ by display |
For most mixed libraries, On When Supported is the cautious starting point because it leaves unsupported SDR content in SDR. Choose Always On only when you specifically prefer the console’s conversion and have checked the result on your display. Neither choice proves that an individual RPG was mastered for HDR.
Checking an HDR problem without guessing
- If the HDR option is unavailable, confirm that the display, HDMI path, and selected input support HDR, then consult the display’s setup guidance.
- If the picture looks washed out or too dark, rerun Adjust HDR and check the display’s HDR or game picture mode.
- If only one RPG looks wrong, compare its own HDR setting and current support notes with another known HDR-capable title before changing every console setting.
- If SDR apps look different after selecting Always On, switch to On When Supported and compare again.
Use PS5 accessibility settings for the barrier you need to remove
Open Settings > Accessibility and adjust the system options that address your particular difficulty. There is no universal accessibility preset: a setting that improves reading may be irrelevant to motion sensitivity or controller access, and some options can interact with HDR.
Reading small text or dense menus
- Text Size: increase it when subtitles, map labels, or menu text are difficult to read.
- Bold Text: add weight when thin type loses definition at your seating distance.
- High Contrast: improve separation between interface elements and their backgrounds when the default palette blends together.
These are system-level display and text controls. The RPG may still use its own subtitle size, font, interface scale, or dialogue settings, so check the game menu as well.

Color discrimination or confusing palettes
- Color Correction: choose the correction that matches the color distinction you have difficulty making, then verify important map, combat, and quest indicators in the game.
- Color Inversion: use only when reversing screen text and background colors solves a specific problem.
Sony documents an important interaction: HDR is turned off while color inversion is enabled. If HDR disappears after enabling inversion, that is expected behavior rather than a display failure. Decide whether the accessibility benefit outweighs HDR for that session, and disable inversion before using HDR again.
Motion sensitivity
Reduce Motion can make system movement more comfortable. It does not guarantee that every camera effect, animation, or visual transition inside an RPG will change. Look for the game’s own motion-related options and test the result in the area that causes symptoms.
Controller access and remapping
Use PS5 controller accessibility settings to remap buttons or adjust the control arrangement when a standard layout causes reach, strength, or dexterity problems. Apply the least disruptive mapping that removes the barrier, then test movement, camera control, combat, menus, and shortcuts before starting a long quest.

For players who need an alternative physical control method, Sony’s accessibility guidance also covers the optional PlayStation Access controller. It is not necessary for a long RPG session and is not suitable for every player, but it may be relevant when the standard controller cannot provide comfortable access.
Check the game’s own accessibility list
Open the RPG’s PlayStation Store hub and review its listed accessibility features. Sony directs players there because accommodations vary by game. The hub can reveal whether the title offers subtitle controls, visual alternatives, control remapping, difficulty assists, or other tools that the PS5 system cannot supply. Use the game’s settings to complete the setup rather than assuming a console option covers every in-game barrier.

A complete long-session setup sequence
- Identify the display path. Confirm which HDMI input the PS5 uses, whether the display supports HDR, and which picture mode you intend to use. Follow the display maker’s instructions instead of copying settings from a different model.
- Open the RPG’s settings first. Select Performance Mode or Resolution Mode according to your priority, or leave the sole available mode unchanged. Read the title’s description.
- Test a representative scene. Move the camera, navigate a menu, and perform the actions you will repeat for hours. Keep the mode that feels and reads better to you.
- Set the console default. Use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets if you want compatible games to start with the same preference.
- Configure HDR. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR, choose supported-content-only output or forced conversion, then use Adjust HDR.
- Apply accessibility controls. Go to Settings > Accessibility and change only the options that address your barrier. Recheck HDR if you enable Color Inversion.
- Finish in the game. Open the title’s accessibility and display menus, then review its PlayStation Store hub for supported features.
- Save a note of the working combination. Record the game mode, HDR choice, and accessibility changes so you can restore them after troubleshooting or a console reset.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely setting to inspect | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The game feels less responsive than expected | Game graphics mode or an unapplied preset | Open the RPG’s own menu, select Performance Mode if available, and test again. Do not assume the PS5 preset changed the active mode. |
| The image is detailed but camera movement is uncomfortable | Resolution Mode or the game’s motion options | Try Performance Mode where offered and inspect the title’s own motion-related controls. |
| HDR is missing | Video Output, display path, or Color Inversion | Check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR, the HDMI/display setup, and whether Color Inversion is enabled. |
| SDR content looks unnaturally processed | HDR set to Always On | Change to On When Supported so unsupported content remains SDR. |
| Subtitles or menus remain hard to read | Game-specific text controls | Use PS5 Text Size, Bold Text, or High Contrast, then check the RPG’s own subtitle and interface settings. |
| Color changes solve one problem but create another | Color Correction or Color Inversion | Test the correction in real gameplay. If inversion is enabled, expect HDR to be turned off. |
| Button remapping breaks an essential action | System or game controller layout | Restore the previous mapping, write down the intended changes, and retest movement, camera, combat, and menus one function at a time. |
| A feature described online is absent | Game version or title-specific support | Check the current game menu and its PlayStation Store hub. Console-wide settings cannot add an accommodation the game does not implement. |
What “best” means for this setup
For a long open-world RPG, “best” is the combination that keeps motion, image detail, HDR output, text, color, and controls comfortable for your particular game, display, and needs. Start with the game’s own mode, use the PS5 preset only as a default, select HDR behavior according to whether you want unsupported SDR converted, and treat accessibility as a set of targeted adjustments. Because the title and display are unspecified, no responsible guide can promise a frame rate, resolution, HDR result, or feature list beyond what those devices and the game document.
