Start with ASTRO BOT. Its toy-like heroes, bright planets, physical comedy and rescue story are the closest PS5 match for Toy Story’s sense of wonder. If you want to spend nothing first, play the pre-loaded ASTRO’s PLAYROOM. Choose Sackboy: A Big Adventure for four-player family co-op, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart for more shooting and cinematic action, or a PlayStation Plus catalog game for an explicitly retro platforming detour.
“Toy Story-like” here is a mood comparison, not a licensing or creative connection. The recommendations below are organized by tone, combat, player count, retro connection and cost path so you can pick the right follow-up for your household.

What makes a good post–Toy Story PS5 game?
The useful qualities are not a particular character or setting. They are playful worlds, expressive characters, readable goals, discoveries hidden in ordinary-looking places and enough humor to make failure feel harmless. A family may also want couch co-op, while another household may prefer one child playing while an adult takes turns.

1. ASTRO BOT: the best overall recommendation
PlayStation describes the premise this way: “The PS5® mothership has been wrecked, leaving ASTRO and the bot crew scattered all over the galaxies.” You then travel through more than 50 planets, rescue the crew and meet more than 150 iconic PlayStation heroes. Those figures come from the current product description and describe the game’s scale, not a promise that every character is playable.
Why it feels like Toy Story
ASTRO and the supporting bots communicate through animation, gestures and slapstick rather than long explanations. The worlds are saturated and toy-like, but they are built as precise platforming courses: you jump, discover routes, collect items, learn a new power and use it to reach the next surprise. That combination of a rescue premise and physical comedy captures the feeling of toys coming to life without pretending the game is part of the film series.

How the adventure is structured
The more-than-50-planet journey is divided into themed areas with new powers, quirky enemies and large bosses. PlayStation also uses the game to showcase the PS5: DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, fast SSD-powered travel and 4K presentation are part of the experience. These features are useful to a family because they make actions legible through the controller, but they can be adjusted or limited through console settings if a player dislikes strong effects.
Who should play it
The official listing specifies one player, with optional online features; it is not a simultaneous couch-co-op game. It works well for a child-and-parent rotation: one person explores while another watches, helps spot collectibles or takes the next turn. The product page lists nine accessibility features. It also lists “Crude Humor” and “Fantasy Violence,” so check the rating used in your country before handing it to a younger child.
Buying details
The PS5 Standard Edition had an observed price of $59.99 on the official product page. That is a regional, time-sensitive observation rather than a universal price; check the PlayStation Store or local retailer for your currency, taxes, discounts and stock. The same page shows an ASTRO BOT Joyful Limited Edition DualSense controller, but special-edition availability is volatile and is not required to play the game.
2. ASTRO’s PLAYROOM: the free starting point
ASTRO’s PLAYROOM is pre-loaded on every PS5 and is explicitly designed for gamers and families. It is the sensible first stop when you want to test whether a child enjoys Astro’s movement, or when you want a short introduction without another purchase.

What it teaches
The platforming is a compact sampler of jumping, movement abilities and collectible hunting. Each area also acts as a tour of PlayStation history, with references and artifacts that adults may recognize while children discover them for the first time. The game demonstrates DualSense features in a controlled way, making it a useful controller tutorial as well as a game.
Where it fits in a family rotation
Use it before buying ASTRO BOT if you are unsure about camera control or platforming. It is single-player, so families should plan turns rather than expect shared play. Because it costs nothing beyond owning the console and is already installed, it removes the two most common barriers to a first session: price and download choice. If it has been deleted, it can be redownloaded from the PlayStation Store associated with the console.
3. Sackboy: A Big Adventure: the co-op pick
Sackboy: A Big Adventure is the recommendation when the defining requirement is “everyone plays together.” PlayStation says up to three other adventurers can join the lead player in local or online co-op, for four players total.
How four-player play changes the game
Sackboy can roll, dive, flutter and collect through handcrafted levels. With several players, the challenge becomes coordination: one person may hold a position while another reaches a collectible, or the group may cause comic chaos by bumping into one another. This is a different appeal from the solo discovery in ASTRO BOT; choose Sackboy because of participation first, not because it is the closest historical recreation.
Local versus online co-op
For couch play, connect the required number of compatible controllers and add each player at the game’s join prompt. Online sessions require each participant to meet the console’s account and network requirements, and any subscription requirement shown for online multiplayer in your region. Because online entitlements and game availability can change, confirm the current store listing before planning a remote session.
Best audience
The colorful presentation and forgiving movement suit families, while optional collectibles give more experienced players a reason to replay stages. It is a stronger choice than a solo Astro game when siblings want equal turns at the same time. Expect the screen and camera to become busier with four characters; younger players may enjoy the chaos, while a precision-focused player may prefer single-player stages.
4. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: the action upgrade
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart keeps the colorful character work and platform-adventure framing but raises the intensity. PlayStation highlights shooting, gadgets, interdimensional hijinks and the Rift Tether, which lets the player travel quickly between points in a level.

What is different from the gentler picks?
Combat is central rather than incidental. Players switch weapons, manage enemies and move through cinematic set pieces in addition to jumping and collecting. The result is a good next step for an older child who has outgrown purely gentle platforming, but it is not the safest blind recommendation for a very young viewer. Verify the current regional age rating and content descriptors before purchase.

The series has a long-running 3D platform-adventure lineage, and PlayStation’s retro-remake guide presents that lineage as a family-friendly style revitalized for newer hardware. Rift Apart is therefore a modern action interpretation of the platformer tradition, not an original 1990s game. Its rapid transitions and dimensional travel also demonstrate what the PS5 hardware can do beyond controller haptics.
Catalog status
PlayStation’s guide identifies Rift Apart as a 2021 PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title. Catalog membership is not permanent ownership: the game remains playable only while the relevant subscription and catalog rights apply. Check your account’s current Game Catalog in your country rather than relying on an old list.
5. PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog: the direct retro route
If “retro” means playing the original games rather than a new game that imitates their mood, use the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. PlayStation’s January 16, 2025 guide invites players to “Run and jump your way through five generations of PlayStation.”
Examples of original-era platformers
- Jumping Flash (1995) for an early first-person jumping experiment.
- Ape Escape (1999) for gadget-based movement and mischievous targets.
- Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (2001) for a larger 3D adventure world.
- Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (2002) for stealth-flavored platforming and a stylized cast.
These games differ in camera behavior, checkpointing and difficulty from current PS5 releases. Treat them as historical experiences: a child may need help with older controls, while an adult may appreciate seeing how the genre evolved.
Modern alternatives in the same catalog guide
The same PlayStation guide lists modern options including A Hat in Time, Celeste, Rayman Legends, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. They are not all equally gentle: for example, precision platforming can make Celeste a demanding choice even though its presentation is friendly.
Check region and tier before committing
PlayStation warns that catalog lineups may differ by region. A title listed in a United States guide may not appear in your country, may require a different PlayStation Plus tier or may leave the service later. Open the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog or Classics Catalog on the account that will play, search the exact title and confirm the included tier and expiry information before subscribing.

Choose by the family’s actual priority
If you want the closest emotional match
Pick ASTRO BOT. It combines toy-like characters, bright settings, physical comedy, a rescue story and exploration in one current PS5 package. Use ASTRO’s PLAYROOM first if you want a free trial of the movement and controller feel.
If four people must play simultaneously
Pick Sackboy: A Big Adventure. It is the only recommendation here with an explicitly documented four-player total in local or online co-op. Confirm controller count, account setup and online requirements before the session.
If the child wants weapons and spectacle
Pick Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, after checking the local rating. It adds shooting and gadget use while retaining a colorful platform-adventure identity.
If an adult wants to share gaming history
Browse the Classics Catalog. Start with a game whose movement and camera match the player’s tolerance, and be ready to explain older conventions such as limited saves or less forgiving checkpoints.
If budget is the deciding factor
Begin with the pre-loaded ASTRO’s PLAYROOM. Then compare the one-time price of a standalone game with the current PlayStation Plus tier and the titles you actually intend to play. A subscription is worthwhile only if its included catalog suits your household and remains available in your region.
A practical play order for a family weekend
- Check the console. Update the PS5, confirm controller charge levels and make sure ASTRO’s PLAYROOM is installed.
- Run the free sampler. Let each child try movement, camera control and DualSense effects for 20–30 minutes. Adjust accessibility or controller intensity if needed.
- Choose the main format. Select ASTRO BOT for solo turns, Sackboy for shared play or Rift Apart for more combat.
- Set a content boundary. Review the local age rating, especially for ASTRO BOT’s listed crude humor and fantasy violence and for Rift Apart’s heavier combat.
- Plan turns or teams. Astro and Ratchet are single-player campaigns; Sackboy can include four people. Decide in advance how long each turn lasts or who handles collectibles.
- Add a classic deliberately. After the modern game, select one Classics Catalog title and explain that its controls and presentation come from an earlier PlayStation generation.
- Recheck availability before paying. Confirm price, subscription tier, region and whether a catalog title is still included on the day you buy or subscribe.
Common pitfalls and fixes
- Expecting Astro to support couch co-op: ASTRO BOT and ASTRO’s PLAYROOM are single-player. Use turns or choose Sackboy.
- Assuming every catalog list is universal: PlayStation says catalog lineups vary by region. Search your own store account.
- Calling a modern tribute an original retro game: Astro and Sackboy recreate a playful platforming feel; the Classics Catalog contains the historical originals.
- Underestimating combat: Rift Apart is more action-heavy than the other primary recommendations. Check the rating and watch a gameplay description before introducing it to a young child.
- Buying hardware for a software feature: The limited-edition Astro controller is optional and availability changes. The standard DualSense included with a PS5 is sufficient.
- Using an old price as a promise: The $59.99 Astro figure was observed on an official product page and can change by region, tax, promotion or stock.
Bottom line: start free, then match the play style
Play ASTRO’s PLAYROOM first if you want a no-cost test. Buy ASTRO BOT when you want the strongest Toy Story-adjacent mix of wonder, character animation and collectible platforming. Choose Sackboy when simultaneous family play matters most, Rift Apart when an older player wants combat, and PlayStation Plus Classics when the point is to experience the original history of 3D platform games.
