You do not actually have to wait for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. The PS5 and PC fighter launched on August 6, 2026, according to PlayStation’s announcement and game listing. The practical question is which other PS5 fighting game best matches what you want from it: team battles, anime presentation, 3D combat, a story campaign, flexible controls or activities outside standard matches.

This guide treats “best” as best fit, not a review ranking. The official PlayStation listings establish platforms, modes and advertised systems, but they do not provide independent scores, balance testing, player-population data, frame-rate comparisons or current prices. Choose from the four options below by the type of fighting game you want to play now, then move to Tōkon when you are ready.

At a glance: which PS5 fighter fits your reason for playing?

Each recommendation answers a different need. Street Fighter 6 is the broadest starting point because it combines three major modes with three control styles. Tekken 8 is the pick for 3D movement, an aggressive Heat mechanic and a continuing story. Dragon Ball FighterZ is the closest mechanical match for a team-based anime fighter, although its teams are 3v3 rather than Tōkon’s 4v4. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the most approachable option if you want one-button skills, a story campaign and a party mode beyond ordinary matches.

Street Fighter 6 2D fighting with several ways to play Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub; Modern, Dynamic and Classic controls; PS4 and PS5 editions Players who want a flexible first game, a solo campaign and a social hub
Tekken 8 3D fighting Heat system, 32-fighter roster and a continuing Jin Kazama/Kazuya Mishima story; PS5 edition Players who prefer 3D movement, aggressive mechanics and story continuity
Dragon Ball FighterZ Anime-style 3v3 tag/support fighting Team battles, support assists and an anime presentation; PS4 and PS5 versions Players most interested in anime teams and tag mechanics
Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising Accessible 2D fighting with additional modes One-button simple inputs for skills, an RPG-inspired story campaign and Grand Bruise Legends online party mode; PS4 and PS5 versions Beginners who want easier inputs and activities outside ranked-style matches

The table describes matching criteria, not a quality order. None of these official listings establishes that one game has better balance, netcode, frame rate, difficulty, downloadable-content value or online population than another.

First, understand the Tōkon timing

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is already available on PS5 and PC. PlayStation announced the August 6, 2026 release on February 12, 2026, and its PS5 product page lists the game on those two platforms. That makes the four games here alternatives, companion games or preparation for Tōkon rather than stopgaps for an unreleased title.

Tōkon’s advertised format is a 4v4 tag-team fighter. That single detail makes the team-oriented choices especially relevant, but it does not make them interchangeable: Dragon Ball FighterZ uses 3v3 teams with support, while Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 center on different combat structures. Use the distinctions below to decide whether you want a mechanical approximation, a different genre of fighting game or a broader single-player package.

Street Fighter 6: the flexible starting point

What it offers

Street Fighter 6 has three named components on PlayStation’s PS4 and PS5 listing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fighting Ground: the traditional match-focused area for learning and fighting.
  • World Tour: a solo campaign-style mode built around exploring and progressing outside a standard versus menu.
  • Battle Hub: a social space for interacting with other players and accessing fights.

The same listing identifies three control types: Modern, Dynamic and Classic. That gives a new player a way to begin with a simplified scheme, try a more situational approach or use the traditional control layout. The existence of three schemes does not mean every character or situation plays identically under each one; it means you can select the control philosophy that suits your first sessions.

Why it suits someone waiting for Tōkon

Choose Street Fighter 6 if you want to alternate between practice, a solo journey and social or versus play without changing games. It is the strongest general recommendation for a household where different players have different experience levels, because the control-type choice is visible at the game level rather than requiring everyone to learn the same input style immediately.

It is also useful preparation if your goal is to learn fighting-game fundamentals rather than a specific team system. You can spend time learning spacing, blocking, attacks and match flow in Fighting Ground, then use World Tour when you prefer a longer solo session. Battle Hub supplies a separate social context instead of making every launch a direct trip into a match.

Who may prefer another option

Street Fighter 6 is not the closest structural match for a 4v4 tag fighter. The listing does not describe a 4v4 team format, and its three modes should not be mistaken for three separate competitive rule sets. If your priority is switching characters during a team round, Dragon Ball FighterZ is the more directly aligned option. If you specifically want 3D movement, Tekken 8 is the better fit.

Tekken 8: the 3D alternative with Heat

What the PlayStation listing confirms

Tekken 8 is listed for PS5 and is described as a 3D fighting game with a Heat system, a 32-fighter roster and a continuing story involving Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima. Those are the useful selection facts for this guide: the game changes the spatial feel of a match, adds a named aggressive mechanic and gives a substantial character lineup with a story thread carried from earlier Tekken games.

Why choose it

Pick Tekken 8 when the appeal of fighting games is movement around an opponent rather than staying on a single two-dimensional plane. The 3D presentation changes how you think about positioning and attacks, so it provides a deliberate contrast to the team-focused format advertised for Tōkon.

The Heat system gives Tekken 8 a clear system to study. A player who enjoys learning when to activate an aggressive mechanic, how it changes momentum and how it fits into a character’s game plan may prefer this over a simpler match structure. Because the listing calls out a continuing Jin Kazama/Kazuya Mishima story, it is also the natural choice for someone who wants narrative continuity rather than only arcade-style bouts.

Roster context

PlayStation describes the roster as 32 fighters. That is a product feature count, not a measure of quality or a guarantee that every character suits your preferred style. Treat it as an indication of breadth when selecting a main character, not as proof that Tekken 8 is superior to the other games here.

Who should not choose it for a team-fighter comparison

Tekken 8 is not presented in the supplied product information as a 4v4 or 3v3 tag fighter. If your immediate goal is to practice switching among team members and using assists, Dragon Ball FighterZ provides the clearer sourced comparison. Tekken 8 instead answers the question, “What if I want a different combat dimension while I wait?”

Dragon Ball FighterZ: the closest team-battle comparison

How its team format differs from Tōkon

Dragon Ball FighterZ is listed for PS4 and PS5. PlayStation describes 3v3 tag and support play, along with anime-style presentation. This makes it the closest cited mechanical comparison to Tōkon’s team premise, but the numbers matter: FighterZ uses three-character teams, while Tōkon is described as a 4v4 tag-team fighter.

A 3v3 structure can still teach the habits a team-fighting fan is looking for: selecting a lineup, deciding when to bring in another character and using support at the right moment. It should not be presented as a rehearsal that maps one-to-one onto Tōkon. The extra slot and any differences in rules mean the games remain distinct.

Street Fighter 6 - PS5
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

Why anime fans may prefer it

The listing emphasizes anime visuals and describes gameplay as easy to learn but difficult to master. That combination makes FighterZ a straightforward recommendation for someone drawn to the look and pace of an anime adaptation but who does not want to begin with the most complicated possible control scheme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Easy to learn” is an advertised positioning statement, not a promise that advanced play will be simple. Team composition, assists and timing can add layers after the first matches. Start with the basic controls, then add one team decision at a time rather than trying to optimize all three characters immediately.

When it is the right substitute

Choose Dragon Ball FighterZ when your defining requirement is team combat with an anime presentation. Choose Street Fighter 6 instead if you want multiple modes and control types, or Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising if one-button skills and a story-plus-party package matter more than a tag-team format.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising: easier inputs and more than matches

Features that stand out

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is listed for PS5 and PS4. Its PlayStation page describes one-button simple inputs for skills, an RPG-inspired story campaign and Grand Bruise Legends, an online party mode. Those features make it a useful alternative for a player who wants to learn fighting games without making every session a serious versus exercise.

Why beginners may choose it

Simple inputs let you trigger skills with fewer directional and button demands. That can reduce the initial barrier while you learn fundamentals such as blocking, movement and recognizing an opening. It does not remove the need to make decisions; it changes how much of your attention is spent executing an input.

The RPG-inspired story campaign gives you a progression path outside isolated matches. Grand Bruise Legends adds a party-oriented activity, so the game can serve a group that wants a lighter online session as well as a conventional fighter.

Free Edition limits

PlayStation notes that character and mode availability is limited in the Free Edition. Do not assume that the free version contains the complete roster or every activity described on the product page. Check the current regional listing for the exact contents before planning a long-term game around it; edition contents and storefront offers can change.

How to choose in under a minute

Use this decision path before downloading or buying anything:

  1. You want team battles first. Start with Dragon Ball FighterZ for its cited 3v3 tag/support structure. Keep the 3v3-versus-4v4 difference in mind when you eventually play Tōkon.
  2. You want the broadest set of modes. Choose Street Fighter 6 for Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  3. You want 3D movement and an aggressive system. Choose Tekken 8 for its 3D format and Heat system.
  4. You want easier skill inputs and a party activity. Choose Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, while checking Free Edition limits.
  5. You want a solo story above all else. Street Fighter 6 and Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising both advertise story-oriented modes; Tekken 8 offers the continuing Jin and Kazuya story. Select based on whether you prefer a campaign-plus-hub package, RPG-inspired progression or an established fighting-game narrative.

A practical first-week plan for each game

Street Fighter 6 plan

  1. Begin in Fighting Ground and select the control type that feels manageable: Modern, Dynamic or Classic.
  2. Use short practice sessions to learn movement, defense and one reliable attack sequence before worrying about a full character guide.
  3. Move to World Tour when you want a solo progression session.
  4. Try Battle Hub after you are comfortable navigating matches, using it as a social change of pace rather than a mandatory competitive step.

Tekken 8 plan

  1. Choose one fighter from the 32-character roster rather than switching constantly.
  2. Learn the basic movement and defense that come with a 3D arena.
  3. Study what the Heat system does for your chosen fighter and identify when it is available in a match.
  4. Use the continuing story as your narrative route if you want context for Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima.

Dragon Ball FighterZ plan

  1. Build a three-character team with roles you can understand, instead of selecting solely by appearance.
  2. Practice bringing in a teammate and using support deliberately.
  3. Play short matches focused on one team decision, such as when to tag out.
  4. Once the controls feel familiar, work on how your three characters cover one another’s weaknesses.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising plan

  1. Start with the simple-input option for skills so execution does not obscure basic fighting decisions.
  2. Play the RPG-inspired story campaign to learn the cast and systems in a structured setting.
  3. Try Grand Bruise Legends when you want a party-style online activity.
  4. If you are using the Free Edition, verify which characters and modes are available in your region before expecting the full package.

Controls and accessories on PS5

All four games can be approached with a standard PS5 controller; none of the supplied product information says that a dedicated arcade stick or leverless controller is required. A PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller is an optional upgrade for players who already prefer dedicated fighting-game controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not buy a specific model solely from a generic compatibility claim. The available information does not verify any named accessory’s PS5 compatibility, so check the manufacturer’s current specifications and the game’s support details before purchasing. Start with the controller you already own, then change hardware only if its layout or feel is genuinely limiting your practice.

Platform, edition and freshness checks

Platforms

Street Fighter 6 and Dragon Ball FighterZ are listed in PS4 and PS5 versions. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is also listed for PS5 and PS4. Tekken 8 is listed for PS5. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is available on PS5 and PC from its August 6, 2026 launch.

Prices and storefront contents

Current prices, promotions, subscription access, regional physical stock and downloadable-content lineups are not fixed product facts. They vary by storefront and date, so this guide intentionally does not quote a price. Check the PlayStation Store page for your region immediately before purchase, and read the edition description rather than assuming that a standard, deluxe or free edition contains the same characters and modes.

What the official listings do and do not prove

The PlayStation pages establish the advertised modes, platforms and systems described above. They are not independent reviews, laboratory tests or player surveys. You should therefore use this article to narrow your choice by feature and preference, then consult the current store listing and any up-to-date system notes for the edition you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For the broadest PS5 starting point, choose Street Fighter 6. For 3D combat and Heat, choose Tekken 8. For the nearest cited team-fighting structure and anime presentation, choose Dragon Ball FighterZ, remembering that it is 3v3 while Tōkon is 4v4. For simple inputs, an RPG-inspired story and a party mode, choose Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising and check its Free Edition limits. Tōkon itself is already playable on PS5 and PC, so the right “while you wait” game is simply the one whose format you want to learn next.
