For a PS5 Digital Slim in the CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 model groups, or for a PS5 Pro in the CFI-7000 group, the correct add-on is Sony’s PlayStation 5 Disc Drive CFI-ZDD1. It reads PS5 and compatible PS4 game discs, plus 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media. The original PS5 Digital Edition in the CFI-1000 model group cannot use this drive, so its owner needs a console with an integrated disc drive.
If you are buying a console rather than upgrading one you already own, compare the complete price of a disc-edition PS5 with the combined price of a supported Digital Edition and CFI-ZDD1. There is no single worldwide cheaper option because console bundles, stock, retailer pricing, returns and warranty terms vary by region and date.
The correct drive for each PS5 model
Compatibility is determined by the model group printed on the console or its box, not simply by whether the machine is called “Digital Edition.” Check that identifier before ordering any accessory.

Sony’s US setup documentation limits the detachable drive to the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups, while Sony’s accessory information also identifies CFI-2100 Digital Edition consoles as compatible. Treat the model number as the final check for your region and hardware revision.

How to find your PS5 model number
The model number is the fastest way to avoid buying an incompatible drive. Look at the label on the console itself or the model information on the original box. The identifier begins with “CFI” and is followed by four digits; the first four-digit group is what matters for this decision.
- Power the console down completely. Do not rely on Rest Mode while inspecting labels or moving the hardware.
- Inspect the console label. Look for a CFI-1000, CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000 designation. If the label is difficult to read, check the box or the purchase record for the exact hardware model.
- Match the group to the compatibility table. CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition consoles, and CFI-7000 PS5 Pro consoles, are the supported targets for CFI-ZDD1. CFI-1000 Digital Edition consoles are not.
- Resolve uncertainty before purchase. Ask the retailer or Sony support to confirm the model rather than assuming that a similar-looking chassis uses the same drive.
Model-group checking is especially important when buying used hardware, importing a console, or purchasing a bundle whose listing title omits the CFI identifier.
What Sony CFI-ZDD1 provides
CFI-ZDD1 is a detachable optical drive designed for supported PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro hardware. Sony’s official instruction manual lists approximate dimensions of 169 × 51 × 190 mm and a mass of 600 g. Reserve enough clear space to handle the console and drive safely during installation; the drive is not a small USB accessory that can sit beside the console without being fitted to it.

The drive therefore solves two separate needs: access to a physical PS5/PS4 game library and playback of supported optical movie formats. It does not add backward compatibility for PS2 or PS3 game discs.
Disc-edition console or Digital Edition plus drive?
For a new buyer, compare complete systems rather than comparing the accessory price with the price of a bare console. The relevant calculation is:
Supported Digital Edition console + CFI-ZDD1 + any required delivery or regional charges versus PS5 console with an integrated disc drive.
Retail prices, bundles, inventory and promotions change by country and date. The available evidence does not establish a worldwide street-price winner, so a claim that one route is always cheaper would be misleading. Use the following framework when checking current listings.

- You have not bought a console yet and the integrated-drive model is competitively priced in your region.
- You want the drive installed at the factory, with no accessory installation or pairing step.
- You prefer one-box returns and warranty handling rather than coordinating a console and a separately purchased drive.
- You are concerned that CFI-ZDD1 stock may be unavailable when you need it.
Choose a supported Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1 when flexibility matters
- You already own a CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000 console.
- The Digital Edition is discounted and the combined cost remains attractive after adding the drive.
- You want the option to use the console digitally now and add physical media later.
- You find a drive with suitable local warranty and return coverage.
Do not budget for CFI-ZDD1 with a CFI-1000 Digital Edition
Sony states that the PS5 Digital Edition CFI-1000 model group does not support disc-based games or media. The detachable-drive design is not a firmware upgrade for that hardware. If physical games are essential, replace or supplement the CFI-1000 with a PS5 model that has an integrated drive rather than buying an accessory that cannot pair with it.
Installing and pairing CFI-ZDD1
Installation involves both physical fitting and an online pairing step. Sony’s manual warns that behavior can depend on the PS5 system-software version, so update the console before treating an unexpected result as a hardware fault.
- Confirm the model group. Verify that the console is CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000. Stop if it is CFI-1000 Digital Edition.
- Update the PS5 system software. Install the latest available console update before troubleshooting. A software-version mismatch can affect drive behavior.
- Shut down and disconnect the console. Turn it off fully, unplug it and move it to a stable, well-lit surface with enough room to remove the appropriate outer cover.
- Prepare the drive and console according to Sony’s instruction manual. Remove the cover designated for the drive, align CFI-ZDD1 with its mounting points and seat it without forcing the connector or shell. Exact cover orientation differs by chassis, so use the manual for your model group.
- Replace the cover and reconnect power. Confirm that the drive is flush and the cover is secured before reconnecting the console.
- Connect the PS5 to the internet. Sony’s product wording is explicit: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Complete the on-screen pairing process before testing a game or movie.
- Test with a supported disc. Start with a known-good PS5 or compatible PS4 Blu-ray game disc. Then test movie media if that is part of your use case. Avoid using PS2 or PS3 discs as a diagnostic test because PS5 does not play those formats.
If you cannot complete pairing, keep the console online, install any pending system update and repeat the setup. Persistent failure after those checks is a reason to use Sony support or the retailer’s warranty process rather than repeatedly forcing the drive into place.

What your physical library can and cannot do
PS5 games
PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs are the primary reason to add CFI-ZDD1. A supported console can install and launch compatible physical PS5 releases from the disc, subject to the game’s own updates and account requirements.
PS4 games
Compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs are supported. “Compatible” matters: the drive reads the disc format, but game compatibility remains governed by PS5 backward-compatibility support and any publisher-specific requirements.
4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD movies
CFI-ZDD1 also functions as a movie-disc drive for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media. This makes the add-on relevant to households that want one console for games and physical films, not only to collectors of boxed games.
PS2 and PS3 discs
PS2 and PS3 software cannot be played from discs on PS5. Keep those discs out of your purchase decision for CFI-ZDD1; the accessory does not provide legacy-console emulation or a disc-based route for those generations.
Buying checklist for the drive
- Exact model: The listing should identify Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Drive CFI-ZDD1, not a generic “PS5 disc drive.”
- Console compatibility: Confirm CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000 before paying.
- Regional stock: Check that the seller can deliver to your country and that the product is intended for your market.
- Warranty: Sony’s UK accessory page states a one-year warranty. Local warranty duration and the party responsible for service can differ, so verify the terms shown for your region.
- Returns: Read the return window and conditions, particularly for opened accessories and used consoles.
- Condition: For used hardware, confirm that the drive includes all mounting parts and that the seller accepts a compatibility test.
- Space and handling: Plan for the drive’s approximately 169 × 51 × 190 mm footprint and 600 g weight while installing and storing it.
- Internet access: Make sure the setup location has a usable internet connection for the one-time pairing process.
Do not treat a low headline price as the total cost until delivery, tax, warranty coverage and return risk are included. Accessory stock can also disappear while console bundles remain available, changing the practical value of each route.

Common problems and fixes
The drive will not pair
First confirm the console model. A CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot pair with CFI-ZDD1, and no software update changes that limitation. On a supported model, connect the PS5 to the internet, install the latest system software and retry the pairing flow.
A disc is rejected
Check the format before assuming the drive is defective. PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media are supported. PS2 and PS3 game discs are not.
The console looks compatible but the listing is vague
Do not rely on photographs or terms such as “Slim Digital.” Obtain the CFI model group from the console label or box and ask the seller to confirm that the drive is CFI-ZDD1. Keep the order returnable until the model is verified.
Setup behavior changes after an update
Sony’s manual notes that behavior can depend on the PS5 software version. Keep the console updated, restart it after installing updates and follow the current on-screen instructions. If the issue remains, document the model group, software version and exact symptom for support.

The accessory arrived damaged or incomplete
Photograph the packaging, stop installation and use the seller’s return or warranty channel. For a used unit, missing mounting hardware is a practical reason to reject the purchase even when the drive itself appears intact.

Which option fits your situation?
You own a PS5 Digital Slim
Read the label. If it is CFI-2000 or CFI-2100, CFI-ZDD1 is the direct path to your physical PS5 and PS4 library, along with supported movie discs. Compare the current accessory price and warranty before ordering.
You own a PS5 Pro
For the CFI-7000 model group, use CFI-ZDD1. Confirm the model group and complete the internet pairing step after installation.
You own the original PS5 Digital Edition
If the console is CFI-1000, do not buy the detachable drive. A disc-equipped PS5 console is the hardware route for physical games and movies.

You are choosing a console today
Price both complete configurations in your region on the same date: a PS5 with an integrated drive, and a supported Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1. Include delivery, taxes, warranty, returns and likely stock delays. Choose the integrated-drive console when the price difference is small and you value a simpler setup; choose the add-on route when the supported Digital Edition is substantially better value or you already own it.
Final buying verdict
For an existing supported console, Sony CFI-ZDD1 is the appropriate physical-drive option: CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition systems, and CFI-7000 PS5 Pro systems, are the compatible groups. For an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition, replace the console plan rather than attempting an add-on. New buyers should make a current, region-specific all-in comparison with a disc-edition PS5, because neither worldwide pricing nor inventory is fixed.
