The fastest practical setup is a wired Ethernet connection, an otherwise idle console, and the platform’s unattended-download settings enabled. Rest Mode helps a PS5 keep downloading while you are away, but it does not guarantee higher peak speed; on Xbox, use the built-in speed test and treat DNS changes as troubleshooting rather than a speed upgrade.
What you can realistically make faster
GTA VI downloads are limited by the slowest part of the path between your console and the platform servers. Your internet plan, wireless signal, router load, local network traffic, platform-server demand and peak-time congestion can all matter more than a console menu setting. No PS5 or Xbox option can force a busy platform server to send data faster.
The recommendations below are intended to remove avoidable limits on your side of the connection. They cannot increase the capacity supplied by your internet service provider or bypass congestion at Rockstar’s distribution infrastructure.

Rockstar lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its current platform information says the physical edition includes a download code and gives a market-specific preload date of November 12. Check the store or retailer for your market, because a date shown for one region is not automatically universal.

There is no confirmed official download size
Rockstar’s retrieved platform information does not publish an official GTA VI file-size figure. A 2026 TechRadar report using Uswitch-based calculations models download times with 120 GB, but that number is only an estimate. It should not be used as a confirmed installation requirement or as proof that one console will download the game faster than the other.
Prepare the network before changing console settings
Do these checks first. They determine whether a console setting can make a measurable difference.
- Check your broadband service. Run a speed test on another wired device if possible. Record the download rate during a quiet period and again when your home is busy. A large difference points to household congestion or peak-time limits rather than a PS5 or Xbox setting.
- Stop competing traffic. Pause cloud backups, computer game updates, streaming video, large uploads and other downloads while GTA VI transfers. A console cannot reserve bandwidth that another device is already consuming.
- Move the router sensibly. Max Beckett, a broadband expert quoted by Uswitch, advises that “positioning your Wi-Fi router in a central, open area of your home can help maximise speeds.” Keep it out in the open, not inside a cabinet or behind large obstructions.
- Restart after a fault. Reboot the router and console if the measured rate is far below normal, the connection repeatedly drops, or the download stalls. Allow the router to reconnect fully before testing again.
These checks establish a baseline. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a wiring change, an idle console or a router restart actually helped.

Use a LAN cable whenever the router is close enough to reach safely. If wiring is impractical, use the strongest Wi-Fi connection available at the console’s location and reduce distance and obstructions.

1. Prefer a wired LAN connection
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Choose Network, then Settings.
- Select Set Up Internet Connection.
- Choose the wired LAN connection and complete the on-screen setup.
A direct Ethernet link avoids wireless interference and usually keeps throughput more consistent. A standard Cat6 Ethernet cable is suitable for connecting either a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S to a nearby router; the cable itself does not create extra internet capacity, so the benefit comes from a cleaner, steadier link.
2. Keep the PS5 connected in Rest Mode
- Go to Settings.
- Open System, then Power Saving.
- Select Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
With this option enabled, the PS5 can continue network activity while it is in Rest Mode. Rest Mode is therefore useful for a large download that you want to run while sleeping or away from home. Sony documents the connection requirement for downloads in Rest Mode, but does not promise that Rest Mode raises the console’s maximum download throughput. If the same network is available, an awake, idle PS5 and a PS5 in Rest Mode may show similar peak rates.
3. Allow automatic game and application downloads
In the PS5 system settings, enable automatic download and update files for games and applications. Sony supports automatic downloads in Rest Mode when the internet connection is maintained. This is especially useful for a preload: once the platform makes the files available for your account and region, the console can begin without waiting for you to start it manually.
Menu wording can change with PS5 system software. If you cannot find the option, use the Settings search function for automatic download or update files, then confirm that Stay Connected to the Internet remains enabled.

4. Make the console idle during the transfer
Pause or close an active game and stop streaming applications before starting a large download. This is bandwidth management, not a quoted Sony speed guarantee: an application that is exchanging data can compete with the download or add processing and disk activity. Start the transfer, leave the PS5 at the home screen or in Rest Mode, and compare the reported rate with your earlier baseline.
PS5 settings checklist
- Wired LAN selected under Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, when practical.
- Stay Connected to the Internet enabled under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Automatic game and application download/update files enabled.
- Games, streaming apps and other bandwidth-heavy activity paused while GTA VI downloads.
- Router positioned in a central, open location and restarted if the connection is abnormal.
Best Xbox Series X|S settings for GTA VI downloads
Xbox exposes useful diagnostics, but exact power and update labels can move with Xbox system updates. The names below describe the functions to look for; verify the current wording on your console.
1. Measure the connection before changing it
- Open the Xbox guide and go to Profile & system, then Settings.
- Open General, then Network settings.
- Run the built-in test that reports download speed and network statistics.
- Record the result before and after each change.
The reported rate is a snapshot, not a guarantee that Xbox servers will sustain it for the entire GTA VI transfer. A low result on the console and on another device indicates a local or ISP limitation. A normal result followed by a slow game download can indicate platform-server demand or a busy route beyond your home.

2. Close games and apps that use bandwidth
Quit any running game or application that is using network bandwidth, then resume the GTA VI download while the console is otherwise idle. Online games, video apps and background activity can compete with the transfer. Recheck the download-speed test after closing them if the rate remains unexpectedly low.

3. Use Ethernet when practical
Connect the Xbox directly to the router with Ethernet when the distance and cable routing are reasonable. Wired networking avoids Wi-Fi interference and fluctuating signal quality. If the router is in another room, improve placement and reduce obstructions before assuming that a new router will solve the problem.
4. Configure unattended downloading
Enable automatic updates and choose an Xbox power mode that leaves the console available for updates when it is turned off. Microsoft has changed power-mode labels over time, so open the current Settings > General > Power options area and read the description shown for each mode. Confirm that the selected mode permits background updates and that the console remains connected to the internet.
5. Restart in the right order
- Pause the GTA VI download.
- Restart the router and wait until its internet connection is fully restored.
- Restart the Xbox.
- Run the network download-speed test again.
- Resume the download and observe the rate for several minutes rather than judging it from a brief spike.
Ethernet or Wi-Fi: which should you use?

For both consoles, Ethernet is the more predictable choice when available. It is not automatically faster than a strong, uncongested Wi-Fi connection on a high-capacity broadband line; its main advantage is consistency and fewer variables.

Rest Mode can make the download more convenient because the PS5 continues working while unattended. Enable the internet connection and automatic-download options described above, then leave the console in Rest Mode. Sony does not state that Rest Mode increases peak throughput, so do not expect a fixed percentage improvement merely by using it.

If an awake PS5 is downloading slowly, first close games and streaming apps, check the connection, and compare a wired link with Wi-Fi. Rest Mode cannot correct a weak wireless signal, an overloaded router, ISP congestion or a busy platform server.

DNS translates a service name into an internet address; it does not add bandwidth to the download stream. Rockstar documents manual DNS selection as part of connection troubleshooting. That makes a DNS change reasonable when name resolution is failing, connections are unstable or a support procedure specifically asks you to try it. It is not a guaranteed download-speed boost.
Use DNS as a controlled troubleshooting test
- Write down the current DNS settings so you can restore them.
- Change DNS only after recording a baseline speed and confirming that competing traffic is stopped.
- Use the console’s network test and repeat the same download observation.
- Keep the change only if it resolves a specific connection problem; revert it if there is no improvement or if reliability worsens.
Do not judge DNS by a single short-lived speed spike. Compare several minutes under similar network conditions. If the platform servers are busy, different DNS resolvers will not remove that congestion.

Why a large GTA VI download may still be slow

How to time the download without misleading yourself
Download-time calculators require three values: file size, sustained throughput and the overhead of the service delivering the files. The file-size value is currently uncertain for GTA VI because Rockstar has not published an official figure on the cited platform page. The 120 GB figure used in a 2026 secondary calculation is an estimate, not a specification.
Measure the console’s sustained rate over several minutes rather than using the highest number shown on screen. A connection that briefly reaches a high rate but repeatedly falls back may take longer than a lower but stable connection. Also allow for verification, installation and patching after the network transfer; the visible download percentage is not necessarily the entire time before the game is playable.

There is no controlled PS5-versus-Xbox download-speed comparison in the available official information. On the same network, use wired connections and identical timing if you want to compare your own consoles; do not infer a universal winner from a single transfer.
A reliable launch-day sequence
- Several days beforehand, install system updates and verify that the console connects normally.
- Run a speed test and note your normal wired or Wi-Fi result.
- Connect Ethernet if practical and place the router in an open, central position.
- Enable PS5 Rest Mode internet access and automatic downloads, or the equivalent Xbox background-update power option.
- On preload day, stop games, streaming and other household downloads.
- Start the download and leave the console idle; use Rest Mode on PS5 if you want it to continue unattended.
- If the rate is poor, test the connection, restart the router and console, and compare again before trying DNS.
- Expect the final available time to depend on the actual file size, sustained rate and platform demand; the 120 GB figure is not an official GTA VI specification.
When to contact your ISP or platform support
Contact your ISP when wired tests on multiple devices remain well below the service you normally receive, the connection drops repeatedly, or performance is consistently poor at all times of day. Contact platform support when the console’s network test is healthy but the download repeatedly fails, produces an error code, or cannot resume after a restart. Include the console model, connection type, test results, time of day and error message so support can distinguish a home-network problem from a service-side issue.
