The best PS5 accessory is the one that removes your biggest interruption. Buy a second DualSense for local multiplayer or a backup, add the DualSense Charging Station if controllers are often flat, choose a PS5-focused headset for 3D audio and chat, and install a compatible M.2 SSD when storage is the problem. The Media Remote, Portal, camera, VR hardware and accessibility controls are worthwhile for specific setups rather than every player.

Extra DualSense: the most broadly useful purchase
Sony’s DualSense combines haptic feedback, dynamic trigger effects, a built-in microphone and a Create button. A second unit enables two-player games immediately and gives you a spare while the main controller charges. It is also useful if several people share one console, because nobody has to pause a game to hand over the only controller.
DualSense Charging Station: eliminate cable swapping
The official station charges up to two DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controllers simultaneously without connecting them to the PS5 console. That keeps the console’s USB ports available for storage, headsets or other devices. Place it where controllers are put down after play, then dock both units rather than searching for a cable before the next session.

Sony describes PULSE 3D as a wireless headset tuned for PS5 3D Audio. It uses USB-C charging and has dual noise-cancelling microphones, making it a straightforward choice for players who want directional game sound and party chat in one device. Sony’s catalog also lists PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore; form factor and regional availability should be checked before buying.
What to compare before choosing
- Wireless link: confirm whether the headset uses a USB receiver, Bluetooth-compatible feature or another connection supported by your PS5 setup.
- Microphone: look for clear voice pickup and effective noise reduction if you spend time in party chat.
- Comfort: over-ear headsets can isolate sound, while earbuds are lighter and less bulky; fit is personal.
- Battery: compare the claimed runtime with your usual session length and charging routine.
- Audio preference: 3D Audio support does not make every headset sound identical, so choose based on the sound profile and fit you prefer.
There is no universal comfort, sound-quality or latency winner established here. Treat headset selection as a fit-and-feature decision rather than assuming a higher price guarantees a better experience.

- Verify your exact PS5 model and its M.2 expansion requirements.
- Use a PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD that meets Sony’s size and speed specifications.
- Confirm that the drive includes a suitable heatsink, or budget for a compatible one.
- Check the exact capacity, model number, warranty and regional availability.
- Install the drive with the console powered off, then format it when prompted before moving or downloading games.
Do not buy on capacity alone: an incompatible interface, incorrect physical dimensions or missing heatsink can prevent installation or cause thermal problems.

Streaming and remote play accessories
PS5 Media Remote
The Media Remote is worthwhile when the PS5 is also your streaming box. Dedicated playback, navigation and app controls are faster than waking a controller for every pause or menu action. It does not improve game performance, graphics or frame rate, so it is unnecessary if you use the console only for games or already control streaming another way.
PlayStation Portal remote player
Portal is a specialized remote-play device for compatible PS5 games over home Wi-Fi. Before buying, make sure your network is reliable where you intend to play and that the games you use support the remote-play experience. It is best viewed as a second-screen solution, not a replacement for the PS5 itself.

PlayStation Access is designed for players who need an adaptable control layout. Start with the player’s range of motion, preferred inputs and mounting position, then determine whether additional compatible accessories are needed. A camera or VR equipment makes sense only if you plan to use the games and applications that require it. These are not general performance upgrades, so buy them around a specific use case rather than as automatic additions to a new console.

Sony’s adaptive-charging announcement reports that, under its stated slim-PS5 and PS5 Pro conditions, completed-accessory charging can reduce console energy use by up to 80%. The figure describes a maximum reduction in those conditions, not a guaranteed saving for every console, accessory or household usage pattern.
A sensible buying order
- Buy a second DualSense if you play local multiplayer or need a dependable spare.
- Add the Charging Station when keeping controllers charged is a recurring nuisance.
- Choose a headset if private listening, positional audio or party chat matters to you.
- Install a compatible, heatsink-equipped M.2 SSD only when storage pressure justifies it.
- Choose the Media Remote for streaming-heavy use, Portal for reliable remote play, and Access or camera/VR hardware for clearly defined needs.
The Bottom Line
