The best PS5 accessory setup depends on how you will use the console, not on buying every item in the accessory catalogue. Start by checking which controllers and cables came with your console. Add a second DualSense when another person will play locally or you want a ready spare; choose a charging station when two controllers routinely need a dedicated place to charge; install an internal M.2 SSD only when game storage is becoming a practical problem; and consider the Media Remote if the PS5 is also your streaming and media player. None of these is mandatory for every new owner.
PlayStation describes its accessory range as a way to “Build your perfect gaming setup with controllers, headsets and other accessories for your PS5® or PS4™ console.” That wording is useful: this is a modular setup, not a single bundle that suits everyone. The guide below maps each purchase to a specific need and identifies where the official information is still conditional.
Check the console bundle before you buy anything
PS5 packages do not all contain the same combination of hardware. Before ordering an accessory, open the box and make an inventory:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Count the DualSense controllers. A package with one controller does not need an immediate second controller unless local multiplayer or a spare is important to you.
- Identify the included power and USB cables and confirm that they reach the place where you will play and charge.
- Check whether you already own a suitable television remote or another way to control streaming apps. The Media Remote is a convenience accessory, not a requirement for operating the console.
- Look at the free space shown in the PS5 storage settings after installing your first games. Storage expansion is easier to justify when you can identify a capacity problem rather than buying an SSD speculatively.
Write down the exact PS5 model or edition before purchasing storage. Compatibility advice for M.2 drives is model- and specification-dependent, and the requirements can change as products and console revisions change.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Quick decision table: which accessory solves which problem?
| Accessory | Primary need | Worth considering when | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Additional DualSense wireless controller | Local multiplayer or a backup input device | Someone else will play on the same console, or you do not want a single controller failure to stop a session | It does not add storage or replace a charging solution |
| DualSense charging station | Organised, simultaneous controller charging | Your household regularly keeps two controllers charged and wants a fixed docking location | It is not required to charge a controller; USB charging remains available |
| Internal M.2 SSD | More internal game capacity | Your installed library and free-space management are becoming a recurring problem | It is not a universal plug-in drive; the exact console and SSD requirements must match |
| PS5 Media Remote | Navigation of media apps and playback | The PS5 doubles as a streaming or disc-media device and you prefer not to use a game controller for menus | It is not a gameplay controller and it is not compatible with PS4 |
The table is a needs-based guide, not a performance ranking. Official product descriptions establish the functions and compatibility points; they do not establish a universal “best” accessory or comparative laboratory results.
Additional DualSense controller: the first multiplayer upgrade
When a second controller makes sense
Buy another DualSense when a second person will play locally, or when you want a charged spare while the primary controller is charging. PlayStation identifies DualSense as a PS5 controller, and the controller documentation covers first pairing and USB charging. A second controller is therefore a straightforward expansion of the console’s existing control system, rather than a specialist add-on.
Do not treat it as an automatic purchase for every new owner. If you play alone, do not expect local multiplayer, and are comfortable charging the supplied controller, the second unit can wait. Check the bundle first: buying a duplicate of an included controller is an avoidable expense.
Pair the controller for first use
- Turn on the PS5 and connect the controller to the console with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the connection. After the initial pairing, you can use the controller wirelessly as supported by the console.
The first-use procedure is intentionally simple, but keep a data-capable USB cable available. A cable that supplies power but does not establish a data connection can prevent first pairing and make a new controller appear unresponsive.

Decide whether you need one controller or two
- Solo player: One controller is normally enough. A spare is a resilience purchase, useful if you play frequently or do not want to interrupt a session for charging.
- Local multiplayer household: A second controller is the direct requirement for two-player games that support local play. Verify the particular game’s player mode separately; owning two controllers does not make every title multiplayer.
- Shared living room: A second controller can let another household member sign in or navigate without taking the active player’s controller, but the practical value depends on how often that happens.
DualSense charging station: convenience, not a requirement
What the station adds
PlayStation says its DualSense charging station can dock up to two DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controllers. That makes it most useful in a household with two controllers: both can return to the same location after a session, and the dock provides a visible “ready” place instead of leaving cables across the room.
The official controller instructions also document USB charging. Consequently, the station is an organisational and convenience upgrade rather than an essential power accessory. If you own one controller and already charge it reliably by USB, the station may add little beyond tidiness.
Use a simple charging routine
- Place the station where both players can reach it when a session ends, but away from drink spills, enclosed heat sources and foot traffic.
- Connect the station using its supplied power arrangement according to the product instructions.
- Seat each controller squarely on its charging contact after play. Do not force a controller into the dock if the contacts are misaligned.
- Keep a USB charging option available for travel, troubleshooting or a controller that is not making contact with the dock.
Questions to ask before buying
- Do you regularly need to charge two controllers at once?
- Will a fixed docking location reduce cable clutter in your setup?
- Would a USB cable already solve the same problem at no additional complexity?
If the answer to the first two questions is no, postpone the station and spend the budget on an accessory that addresses a real limitation, such as storage or a second controller for local play.

Why storage expansion is conditional
Game installations can consume internal space quickly, but the need varies with the size of your library and how often you switch between titles. An internal M.2 SSD is an optional expansion path, not a standard part of every new-console setup. Add one when deleting and redownloading games has become a recurring task or when the free-space warning appears during normal use.

PlayStation’s accessories overview names the officially licensed WD_BLACK SN850P and identifies expansion capacity of up to 8TB as a product capability claim. That figure should not be read as a blanket recommendation for every M.2 drive or every console revision. Confirm the current product listing and requirements before purchase.
Compatibility checks that must happen before checkout
The available official summary does not provide the complete compatibility specification. Use the current PlayStation installation guidance for your particular console and verify each of these points against the drive’s documentation:
- Console model: Identify the exact PS5 model or revision, not just “PS5.”
- Drive dimensions: Confirm that the M.2 module fits the permitted physical dimensions.
- Performance requirement: Check the required read-speed or equivalent performance guidance for the console.
- Heatsink: Verify whether the drive includes an acceptable heatsink or needs one, and ensure the combined height remains within the console’s limit.
- Capacity range: Confirm that the proposed capacity is within the current supported range.
- Installation method: Follow the latest official instructions for opening the expansion bay and securing the module.
Do not assume that every M.2 drive sold for a computer will work in a PS5. A physically compatible module can still fail the console’s speed, size or heat-management requirements.
Install the drive using the current official procedure
- Back up important saved data and close running games before opening the console.
- Shut down the PS5 completely; do not work on a console that is in Rest Mode.
- Disconnect the power and other cables, then allow the console to cool.
- Remove the expansion-bay cover and install the M.2 module exactly as shown in the current PlayStation instructions for your model.
- Secure the module and its heatsink without overtightening, replace the cover, reconnect the cables and start the console.
- When prompted, format the drive using the PS5’s on-screen process. Formatting erases data on that drive.
- Move or install games only after the console reports that the expansion storage is ready.
The exact screw, cover and orientation details belong to the official model-specific instructions; consult those instructions rather than relying on a generic M.2 installation video.

Symptoms of a storage mismatch
- The console does not recognise the installed drive.
- The PS5 reports that the drive cannot be used or does not meet its requirements.
- The heatsink or module does not sit flat in the expansion bay.
- The cover cannot be replaced without pressure.
Power down and remove the drive if it does not fit correctly. Recheck the model, dimensions, speed and heatsink combination before trying another installation. Do not force the cover closed or continue using a module that is not secured.

What it is for
PlayStation Support describes the Media Remote this way: “The media remote allows you to navigate your PlayStation®5 console and access media and apps without a wireless controller.” It is aimed at people who use the PS5 as an entertainment device and want a conventional remote for menus and playback.
The documented controls include directional and selection buttons, TV volume and power controls, and playback controls. This can make streaming sessions, disc playback and app navigation less cumbersome than picking up a DualSense every time you pause or adjust volume.

Build a setup around your playing profile
| Profile | Start with | Add later if the need appears | Usually defer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo player with a small library | Use the supplied DualSense and USB charging | Spare controller if reliability matters | Charging station and Media Remote unless your habits change |
| Local multiplayer household | Second DualSense, after checking the bundle | Charging station when both controllers need a home | Media Remote if the PS5 is rarely used for apps |
| Large digital library | Measure free space and identify which games you keep installed | Compatible internal M.2 SSD after model-specific checks | Second controller unless another player needs one |
| Living-room media user | Use the supplied controller initially | Media Remote for frequent app and playback navigation | Storage expansion unless installed games are already filling the drive |
| Mixed household | Second controller if local play is routine | Charging station and Media Remote according to use frequency | M.2 SSD until storage pressure is documented |
A purchase checklist that prevents common mistakes
- Inventory the box: Count controllers and locate cables before opening a shopping page.
- Name the problem: Choose “another player,” “charging clutter,” “not enough game space” or “media navigation.” If you cannot name the problem, wait.
- Check compatibility: This is essential for an M.2 SSD and still sensible for any accessory marketed across PS4 and PS5 generations.
- Match frequency to cost: A daily inconvenience can justify a convenience accessory; a problem that occurs once a month may not.
- Separate necessity from tidiness: USB charging already works, so a dock should be judged on simultaneous charging and organisation.
- Keep return information: Retain packaging and proof of purchase until pairing, charging, docking or storage formatting has worked correctly.
Troubleshooting after you add an accessory
A new controller will not pair
Connect it directly to the PS5 with a USB cable and press the PS button, as described in the first-use instructions. Try another known-good cable if the console does not detect it. Keep the controller connected until pairing completes before testing wireless use.
A controller is not charging on the station
Remove and reseat it so the contacts align, then test USB charging. If USB charging works but docking does not, the issue is likely seating, power or contact alignment rather than the controller battery itself. Use the dock for the other controller while you troubleshoot.
The M.2 SSD is rejected
Turn the console off and review the current requirements for the exact PS5 model, including dimensions, performance and heatsink height. Do not format repeatedly or force the module into place; resolve the compatibility mismatch first.

The Media Remote does not control the television
Confirm that the remote is paired with the PS5 and review the current support instructions for TV power and volume setup. The remote’s PS5 navigation and its television-control features are separate functions, so a problem with one does not necessarily mean the other is unavailable.
What is not established by the available product information

Prices, bundles, regional availability and product revisions can change. Treat “best” as “best match for your use,” and recheck official listings and compatibility instructions at the time you buy—particularly for an internal SSD and for any console revision introduced after the information cited above.
