There is no universally best proxy provider in 2026. The right purchase depends on your target sites, countries, session behavior, protocol, speed tolerance, and budget. Start by choosing the proxy category and operating model, then run a small lawful pilot against the sites and workflows that matter to you.

For a current evidence-based shortlist, Proxyway’s 14-day US residential test reported the highest average success rate for Massive (99.87%), followed closely by Oxylabs (99.83%) and Decodo (99.82%). Decodo had the fastest average response time among those entries at 0.60 seconds, while SOAX recorded 0.55 seconds but a lower 98.25% success rate. Those are publisher-reported results under one US test design, not guarantees for another country, target, protocol, or workload.

What a proxy provider does

A proxy is an intermediary between your application and a website. The destination sees the proxy server’s IP address rather than the IP address of your device. Julius Cerniauskas, CEO of Oxylabs, is quoted by TechRadar describing a proxy as an intermediary that adds a layer connecting a user to a website; its own IP is the address the website sees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your provider supplies access to one or more IP networks and usually gives you a dashboard, credentials, an endpoint, and controls for rotation or session persistence. Your software then sends HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS5 traffic through that endpoint. The proxy does not make an unlawful task lawful, and it does not guarantee that a target will accept every request. Site terms, robots rules, privacy law, copyright law, and rate limits still apply.

Choose the proxy category before comparing vendors

Price and pool-size claims are meaningless until the network type matches the job. The main categories differ in how their addresses are sourced, how targets perceive them, and how predictable their performance is.

Category Typical address source Where it can fit Trade-offs to test
Residential IP addresses associated with consumer internet connections Geo-sensitive pages, localized testing, and targets that distrust data-center ranges Variable latency, usage-based billing, and stricter consent and sourcing questions
Datacenter Commercial hosting or data-center networks, not an ISP household line High-volume jobs where speed and predictable infrastructure matter more than residential appearance Some targets block or challenge data-center ranges; location precision may be narrower
ISP or static residential Addresses advertised through an ISP but held in a more stable, dedicated arrangement Long-lived sessions, account workflows, and applications that need a consistent address Usually costs more than rotating access and may have smaller availability in a specific city
Mobile Addresses associated with cellular networks Mobile-site testing and targets that apply mobile-carrier reputation differently from fixed broadband Capacity, carrier coverage, and session stability vary sharply by location

Then select the operating model. Rotating proxies assign a new address on a schedule or per request. Sticky sessions keep an address for a defined period so cookies, logins, and multi-step flows remain associated. Dedicated or static allocations trade some flexibility for consistency. Check whether rotation is controlled by a time parameter, a session token, an API call, or a dashboard setting.

How to evaluate a provider

Success on your actual targets

Measure completed, useful responses rather than connections alone. A request can connect successfully yet return a challenge page, an interstitial, stale content, or an error generated by the target. Record status codes, content checks, challenge frequency, and parse success for each target and country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Latency and stability

Average response time is useful for comparing one test, but your workflow may be affected by tail latency, timeouts, DNS behavior, connection reuse, and evening congestion. Measure p50 and p95 latency if your tooling allows it, and record the same metrics with and without concurrency.

Geography and targeting controls

Confirm the exact controls you need: country, state, city, ZIP code, autonomous system number, carrier, or a particular metropolitan area. A provider may advertise broad country coverage while offering limited city-level inventory. Ask whether a location is guaranteed, sampled probabilistically, or best-effort, and whether the control applies to every proxy type.

Session and protocol support

Verify HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS5 support for the client you intend to use. Check authentication options, connection limits, simultaneous sessions, IP rotation rules, sticky-session duration, and whether WebSocket or UDP traffic is excluded. A technically supported protocol can still behave differently across network categories.

Integration and support

Look for clear endpoint formats, examples for your language, usage reporting, logs, status information, and an escalation path when a target fails. Support response time matters when a campaign or monitoring job is time-sensitive. Test the API and account controls before committing to a large minimum purchase.

Total cost and commitment

Compare the billing unit and the minimum commitment, not just a headline price per gigabyte. Include request fees, bandwidth, dedicated-IP charges, overage rates, expiration rules, trial limits, refunds, taxes, and support tiers. Published prices and terms can change, so verify the checkout and current terms on the day you buy.

Proxyway’s 2026 US residential benchmark

Proxyway reports 560,000 connection requests over 14 days for its 2026 US residential-provider guide. The figures below are that publisher’s results, not a test performed for this article. They describe one geography, date, target set, and methodology; they should not be treated as a promise of performance on your sites.

Provider Unique IPs in test Average success rate Average response time
Massive 222,513 99.87% 0.67 s
Oxylabs 489,032 99.83% 0.68 s
Decodo 466,068 99.82% 0.60 s
Webshare 278,836 99.27% 1.36 s
NetNut 470,287 98.44% 0.84 s
SOAX 340,126 98.25% 0.55 s
Bright Data 392,272 99.14% 1.00 s

The Bright Data row reproduces a 2024 Proxyway result shown on its 2026 page, so it is not a same-date measurement with the other rows. Unique-IP counts also are not a quality score: a smaller pool can still deliver better results for a narrowly defined location, while a larger pool can include addresses unsuitable for your target.

Shortlist by workload

When US residential success is the first filter

Massive leads the listed Proxyway 2026 US test on average success at 99.87%, with a 0.67-second average response time and 222,513 unique IPs in that test. Oxylabs follows at 99.83% and 0.68 seconds, with 489,032 unique IPs. Decodo reports 99.82% and the largest speed advantage among the top three at 0.60 seconds, with 466,068 unique IPs. Treat these as starting points for a pilot, not a ranking that overrides your target’s behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When response time is critical

SOAX recorded the fastest average response time in the listed 2026 table at 0.55 seconds, but its average success rate was 98.25%. Decodo’s 0.60 seconds paired with a 99.82% success rate in the same publisher test. The practical choice depends on whether a failed request costs more than the extra fraction of a second. Measure end-to-end task time, including retries and parsing, rather than proxy handshake time alone.

When you need a broad provider offering

TechRadar’s 2026 guide places Decodo first overall and reports 125 million or more IP addresses across 195 or more countries, alongside residential, mobile, and datacenter products. Those figures and the ranking are TechRadar’s editorial report and provider-described inventory, not an independently verified live count. Confirm the locations and product type you need before paying.

When you need a large residential or web-data vendor

Oxylabs appears near the top of Proxyway’s US residential table and is also described by TechRadar as a proxy and web-data provider. Its 2026 Proxyway row shows 489,032 unique IPs, 99.83% average success, and 0.68-second average response time. Those numbers support a test candidate for high-volume residential work; they do not establish performance in other regions or on your particular targets.

When cost entry matters

Proxyway lists example residential offers of $4 for 1 GB for Decodo and $30 for 5 GB for Oxylabs. These are page-reported examples, not guaranteed prices, and the pages also describe differences in trials, refunds, and pay-as-you-go terms. Compare the effective cost of successful output after retries, minimum purchases, expiration, and any required add-ons.

When you are considering NetNut, Webshare, or SOAX

NetNut’s listed Proxyway result was 98.44% success, 0.84 seconds, and 470,287 unique IPs. Webshare’s was 99.27%, 1.36 seconds, and 278,836 unique IPs. SOAX’s was 98.25%, 0.55 seconds, and 340,126 unique IPs. These figures make each worth evaluating for a workload where its location controls, session model, or commercial terms fit better than a nominally higher-ranked option.

Why 2026 rankings disagree

Editorial lists are not a consensus benchmark. Proxyway’s table is a 560,000-request, 14-day US residential test. TechRadar’s guide uses its own editorial procedure and reports provider information such as Decodo’s claimed inventory and country count. A separate 5-Proxy 2026 roundup says it used more than 1.2 million automated requests and recommends Bright Data overall while assigning other providers to specific categories. Its recommendations and stated figures were not independently validated here.

Different targets, countries, concurrency, retry rules, protocols, dates, and definitions of success can reverse an order. When two lists disagree, compare their methods first. A provider should move up your shortlist only after it performs on your target and meets your cost and operational requirements.

Run a workload-specific pilot before a large purchase

  1. Define the job. Write down target domains, countries or cities, request volume, concurrency, expected response format, session length, login requirements, and an acceptable failure rate. Exclude tasks that violate law or a target’s terms.
  2. Select two or three network types. For example, compare residential rotation with datacenter access for a public-page monitoring task, or compare static residential with sticky residential for a multi-step account workflow.
  3. Use identical software settings. Keep timeouts, headers, retry limits, concurrency, parsing checks, and DNS behavior constant. Record the proxy category, endpoint, location control, and session identifier for every sample.
  4. Start small. Run enough requests to expose intermittent failures without creating an abusive load. Respect published rate limits and stop if the target begins returning challenge pages or blocks.
  5. Score useful outcomes. Track successful parses, challenge pages, HTTP errors, connection failures, p50 and p95 latency, bandwidth, and cost per successful result. Separate provider failures from target-side errors.
  6. Test session behavior. Verify that a sticky session remains stable for the required period and that rotation actually changes the address when requested. Check whether cookies and TLS behavior remain compatible with your client.
  7. Test recovery. Disconnect an endpoint, exceed a safe timeout, and rotate credentials in a controlled test. Confirm how quickly your application can fail over and whether unused traffic is billed.
  8. Review commercial terms. Check minimum purchase, expiration, overage, refund or trial eligibility, concurrent-connection limits, support channel, and cancellation process before scaling.

Free proxies: why they are a high-risk shortcut

A peer-reviewed study by Mehanna, Rudametkin, Laperdrix, and Vastel collected 640,600 free proxies from 11 providers and tested them daily over 30 months. Only 34.5% were active at least once during the study’s tests. The researchers identified 4,452 distinct vulnerabilities on proxy IP addresses, including 1,755 that allowed unauthorized remote code execution and 2,036 that enabled privilege escalation on the host device. They also found 16,923 proxies that appeared to manipulate content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those measurements apply to the study’s collected free-proxy sample and period, not to every free service and not to paid commercial networks. They nevertheless show why an unknown relay can expose credentials, alter pages, inject scripts, or simply fail when reliability matters. Never send passwords, session cookies, payment data, or proprietary requests through an untrusted free endpoint. If you must experiment with an open proxy, isolate it from production credentials and verify responses cryptographically where possible.

Buying and operating pitfalls

  • Choosing by pool size alone: a large advertised pool does not prove that your city, ASN, carrier, or target is covered at the moment you need it.
  • Confusing connection success with task success: count valid content and completed workflows, not only TCP or HTTP handshakes.
  • Ignoring session requirements: rotating an address during checkout, login, or pagination can invalidate the workflow.
  • Underestimating retries: a low per-gigabyte price can become expensive when retries, challenge handling, and discarded responses multiply traffic.
  • Assuming all locations are equivalent: a provider’s country-level result says little about a particular state, city, ZIP code, carrier, or ASN.
  • Overlooking expiration: prepaid bandwidth, trial credits, or minimum commitments may expire even when your project is paused.
  • Failing to monitor abuse signals: sudden challenge pages, 403 responses, or unusual redirect patterns can indicate that your request rate or behavior needs adjustment.
  • Treating a publisher ranking as a guarantee: test design, date, geography, and target list determine what a ranking actually means.

A practical decision framework

Use this order when narrowing the shortlist:

  1. Legality and permission: confirm that the intended collection, testing, or access is allowed.
  2. Network fit: choose residential, datacenter, ISP/static residential, or mobile based on target behavior.
  3. Location precision: require the smallest geographic or network unit your use case needs.
  4. Session model: decide between rotation, sticky sessions, and dedicated addresses.
  5. Protocol and integration: verify the client libraries, authentication, concurrency, and logging you need.
  6. Pilot metrics: compare useful success, latency distribution, stability, and cost on identical workloads.
  7. Commercial risk: read limits, expiration, refunds, support, and scaling terms before committing.

On the evidence available for 2026, a sensible shortlist begins with Decodo and Oxylabs for strong results in Proxyway’s US residential table, adds Massive if the highest reported success rate is worth testing, and considers SOAX when low measured response time is important. NetNut and Webshare remain candidates when their controls or terms fit the job. Bright Data should be evaluated with the date caveat attached to its reproduced 2024 Proxyway result and with the separate 5-Proxy recommendation treated as that publication’s methodology, not a universal verdict.

Recheck live inventory, locations, protocols, prices, trials, refunds, and usage terms at checkout. Select the provider that wins your controlled pilot on completed results and total cost, not the one with the most impressive headline number.
