Udio responds better to a compact creative brief than to a pile of disconnected genre labels. A useful prompt usually combines the subject or scene with a genre, mood, tempo, instruments, vocal direction, era, and production character.
For example, Walking on the beach under a sunny rain, synthwave, edm gives Udio both a scene and a musical direction. The prompts below are designed as starting points: change the subject, vocal style, instruments, and energy to fit the song you want.
How to enter a prompt in Udio
- Open Udio and select Home or Create.
- Enter a description in the prompt field.
- Add or select suggested tags shown below the text box, if useful.
- Choose any available creation settings, then generate the song.
On the web, the Create page exposes the creation fields and controls. Udio generates lyrics automatically when you describe the song without supplying custom lyrics. The more specific your description, the more consistently Udio can aim at the intended result.

You do not need to include every element. Start with the parts that matter most. A prompt containing a clear scenario is often more useful than one containing ten loosely related genres.

Genre references describe a musical direction; they do not guarantee an exact artist imitation. Udio states that it will not copy an artist’s voice, although an artist reference may influence the broader musical feel.

Scene-based prompts work particularly well
Instead of writing only ambient electronic, slow, instrumental, give Udio an image or situation:
Ambient electronic music for watching city lights from a train window at 2 a.m., slow tempo, soft pads, distant piano, restrained sub-bass
The scene gives the model a coherent emotional target. Try describing:

- the emotional change from beginning to end;
- what the listener should picture.

Prompts for specific vocals
Describe the vocal qualities rather than relying on a singer’s name. Useful terms include husky, breathy, intimate, powerful, spoken, raspy, choir-backed, and close-mic’d.

For backing vocals in custom lyrics, Udio documents parentheses as an annotation format. For example:

Bracketed annotations can also suggest sections or musical events, including [Chorus], [Guitar Solo], [Acoustic Guitar], [Violin], and [Synthesizer]. These are useful directions, not a guaranteed programming language: Udio does not publish a complete formal grammar or promise that every invented tag will be followed exactly.
Prompts for instrumental music
When you do not want singing, use Udio’s Instrumental Mode. You can also describe the instruments directly:

For a Style-based generation that produces unwanted vocal-like sounds, Udio recommends selecting Lyrics and entering [INSTRUMENTAL BREAK] in the lyrics box. This is a troubleshooting workaround, not a universal command syntax.
How to use custom lyrics
For greater control, go to Create → Write Your Lyrics → Custom. Type or paste your words into the Lyrics Editor.
You can also ask Udio to draft lyrics:
- Open Create → Write Your Lyrics → Custom.
- Enter a description of the song in the lyrics area.
- Click Write for me.
- Review the draft and generate the song.
To try another version, use Regenerate Lyrics. The editor also provides Go Back, Move Forward, View History, and Edit Lyrics.

[Guitar Solo]Keep the lyrics natural and give sections clear labels. If a word is pronounced incorrectly, test a modified spelling rather than rewriting the entire song.

Udio documents several practical workarounds:

| An acronym is pronounced as a word | Spell it out, such as En-Bee-Ay (NBA). |
| A phrase needs more expression | Add a sound such as “Woohoo!” or “Mmmhmmm!”. |
| Stress falls on the wrong syllable | Test accented spelling, such as récord versus recórd. |
Custom lyrics can be written in languages other than English. Pronunciation quality can vary, so generate several versions and adjust spelling where necessary.

Using tags, Manual Mode, and repetition
Suggested tags appear below Udio’s prompt box. Click a tag to add it to the song description instead of guessing every possible genre label.
Udio also documents repeating important words for emphasis. For example:
Dark, dark cinematic synthwave about a lonely drive through a dark, neon-lit city
Use repetition sparingly. Repeating the central mood or instrument can reinforce it, but repeating every adjective makes the prompt less clear.
Manual Mode is intended for exact tags only. It does not accept free-form text, avoids automatic prompt refinements, and works best with custom lyrics. Udio warns that lyrics may be more generic in this mode, so normal prompting is usually the better starting point for a story-driven song.
How to reduce unwanted styles
Udio’s current control is called Style Reduction, and it is located under Advanced Controls. Use it to minimize styles or elements that keep appearing in your generations.
For example, if a supposedly acoustic track repeatedly gains a glossy dance beat, place relevant unwanted elements in Style Reduction rather than searching for a field labelled “Negative Prompt.” The exact label matters because Udio’s documented interface uses Style Reduction.
When to use Styles instead of a text prompt
A text prompt is best when you want to describe a new concept. Use Styles when you want Udio to draw from the musical character of a reference.

Current web paths include:
- Hover over a Library song and choose Style.
- Open a song page, choose Create → Use Style.
- Open Create in the left sidebar and choose Style Your Song.
- Choose Use Style Reference to work from an audio upload.
References may come from your own Udio songs, another user’s Udio song, an audio upload, or the Style Library. You must have usage rights for uploaded audio.
Udio uses a documented 32-second context window for a source reference. If the source is longer, drag the red selection area to choose the portion that should supply the style. Style Strength ranges from 0% to 100%, with 80% documented as the default. Two references can be blended, starting at a 50/50 balance; shifting the balance by roughly 15 percentage points can be worth testing.
Styles are not the same as remixing or extending. Styles draw from characteristics such as instrumentation, vocalist tone, tempo, sound colour, and structure. Remixing focuses more on rhythmic and tonal structure, while extending predicts what should come next in an existing song.

- Start with one clear idea. Write the scene, genre, and emotional direction.
- Generate more than one result. A good prompt can still produce different arrangements and vocal takes.
- Change one variable. If the arrangement is right but too slow, change the tempo wording without replacing the rest of the prompt.
- Use Style Reduction for persistent problems. Put recurring unwanted elements there rather than making the main prompt longer.
- Move to custom lyrics when the vocal structure matters. Add section labels and revise pronunciation-sensitive words.
- Edit only the bad section when available. Paid subscribers and users trialing a subscription can use Library → select a song → Edit → Replace Section or Edit Lyrics, then highlight the relevant passage and click Edit.
Common prompt failures and fixes

Instrumental:

Custom lyrics:

For the strongest results, make the prompt sound like a concise brief to a producer: explain what the song is about, how it should feel, what should be heard, and how the arrangement should move.

What is the best prompt format for Udio?
Combine a subject or scene with genre, mood, tempo, instruments, vocal direction, and an era or production reference. You can omit details that are not important, but include a clear scenario whenever possible.

Can Udio generate lyrics from a prompt?
Yes. Enter a song description on Home or Create and Udio generates lyrics as part of the resulting song. For more control, use Create → Write Your Lyrics → Custom.
How do I make an instrumental song in Udio?

The most dependable Udio prompts have two layers: a concrete scene or story and a focused musical brief. Start with one genre, a mood, a few instruments, and a vocal or instrumental direction. Then iterate by changing one detail at a time. Use custom lyrics for structure, Style Reduction for recurring unwanted elements, and Styles when a reference track’s character matters more than a text description.
