For most groups, choose a Project Zomboid host by matching its build selection, mod workflow, backups, server location, and recurring price to your group—not by a headline slot count or an untested “best” claim. Host Havoc is a practical all-round option based on the features listed in the comparison; GTXGaming is a fit when branch switching and administration controls matter; and RAM-based plans from OXY.Games or PZStack give clearer memory figures. These are feature-based recommendations, not results from controlled performance tests.

Which Project Zomboid server host fits your group?

The provider information below comes from an iTechGuides comparison captured August 16–18, 2026, and provider pages with their own dated details. It supports a shortlist by use case, not a universal performance ranking. Features and prices can change; verify the exact plan, build branch, location, and total recurring checkout cost before ordering.

Host Best fit What the cited information lists Check before buying
Host Havoc Groups seeking an easy all-round setup Workshop installation, FTP, custom maps, automated backups, migration, and an advertised 72-hour money-back guarantee Confirm Build 41 legacy support and the plan’s actual RAM and CPU allocation; the comparison says those figures are not fully comparable.
GTXGaming Groups that expect to switch branches or need more server controls Documented Build 41/42 switching, Workshop tools, save upload, scheduled off-site backups, and migration Captured US starting price is dated; advanced controls may be unnecessary for a casual group.
Nitrado Groups that prefer choosing a player-slot package The comparison captured 30-day examples of $9.79 for 6 slots and $12.99 for 8 slots. Slot-based packages do not provide an equally clear RAM comparison, and terms vary. Figures are August 2026 snapshots, not guaranteed current checkout prices.
Shockbyte Groups comparing player/RAM packages and advertised mod support Example player/RAM packages, mod support, automatic updates, and backups The cited 4 GB entry plan may not suit some Build 42 or modded workloads; adequacy depends on the actual group and setup.
BisectHosting Groups wanting RAM-based configuration and a choice of location The comparison lists location selection and captured per-GB pricing information. Availability can vary by location, and captured monthly rates are volatile.
OXY.Games Groups wanting a stated RAM allocation and branch choices Its page lists Build 42 stable by default, a legacy41 branch, Workshop support, and a Netherlands location. It lists 8 GB for €12.80/month and 12 GB for €19.20/month. Those prices were on a provider page last updated September 13, 2026. They are provider claims, not independent performance evidence; its memory estimates are community guidance.
PZStack Groups wanting Build 41/42, Workshop tools, and stated RAM plans Its page lists Riverside at $14.99/month with 8 GB and Rosewood at $21.99/month with 12 GB. Prices were listed on a page accessed October 7, 2026. Stated player capacity assumes vanilla or light mods; heavy mods can reduce it.

The Nitrado examples are 30-day figures captured by iTechGuides in August 2026; OXY.Games’ monthly figures are from its September 13, 2026 page; and PZStack’s monthly figures are from its page as accessed October 7, 2026. Treat every amount as a dated offer, not a guaranteed current price. Taxes, billing terms, currency, promotions, and location can affect checkout totals.

Match the host to the job

  • Preserving an established world: Prioritize confirmed support for that world’s exact build, plus a backup and restore path. A low introductory price is secondary if changing branch means starting over.
  • Running Workshop mods: Ask whether your specific collection works on your chosen build. Compare how the panel handles Workshop IDs, Mod IDs, load order, and configuration—not just whether the host advertises “mod support.”
  • Hosting a small vanilla group: Compare realistic recurring plans and understand whether the limit is RAM, player slots, or something else. A slot count is not interchangeable with a memory allocation.
  • Serving players in a particular region: Check which locations are actually available for the plan. The cited sources list locations but provide no independent latency measurements.
  • Running a public community: Look closely at backup frequency, restore access, migration, admin controls, support process, and scaling options. The cited feature lists do not establish comparative uptime or support quality through controlled testing.

Build 41 or Build 42: choose for compatibility

Provider pages describe Build 42 as stable or the default and Build 41 as a legacy branch. OXY.Games dates the transition to July 29, 2026; PZStack describes selecting a build per server. The critical question is whether your group needs to retain a Build 41 world or use a Workshop collection that is not ready for Build 42.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not assume a world can move between branches. OXY.Games says a Build 41 save cannot be opened on Build 42; PZStack says saves, mods, and maps do not migrate between builds. Before changing branches, make a backup and ask the host how to restore it and switch the server. Be prepared for the change to require a new world.

What to check for Workshop mods, backups, and admin tools

Workshop setup is helpful, but compatibility is still specific

Panel tools can reduce manual configuration. OXY.Games advertises one-click Workshop installation and automatic configuration, and says its panel writes Workshop configuration. PZStack says its panel resolves Workshop IDs, Mod IDs, and load order, with results filtered by build. Neither convenience feature establishes that every mod in a particular collection supports both branches. Check the collection against the server’s selected build.

Check backup details, not just the word “backups”

Ask how often backups run, whether they are stored separately from the game server, whether you can download them, and what steps restore a world. Also establish how a save migration is handled. The cited sources list backup-related features, including scheduled off-site backups for GTXGaming and automated backups for Host Havoc, but they do not provide a consistent, independently verified comparison of backup intervals or restore times.

How much RAM does a Project Zomboid server need?

The sources do not establish a universal official minimum. OXY.Games explicitly labels its Build 42 memory estimates as community guidance rather than a published game specification. Host plans also differ: some are sold by RAM, while others emphasize player slots, making direct comparison difficult.

Use the provider’s allocation as one input, not a guarantee of capacity. Build, number of players, map exploration, and mod workload can affect resource needs. For a modded group, ask the provider about your expected workload and whether you can scale the plan later; do not treat a vendor estimate or a plan’s slot label as an authoritative game requirement.

Renting versus hosting the server yourself

Renting shifts routine server operation to a hosting provider and can provide a control panel, backups, and a support channel, depending on the plan. Self-hosting can suit a technically comfortable player with a machine and network they can administer, but that player takes on configuration, security, and ongoing administration.

TechRadar describes starting the Project Zomboid Dedicated Server tool through Steam, as well as in-game hosting, as self-hosting routes. It warns that users need to configure security correctly. This is a different workload from renting a managed server, not a like-for-like hosting plan comparison. TechRadar also gives general requirement guidance, but the evidence here does not support a universal hardware minimum for every branch, mod collection, and group.

How to make the final choice

  1. Write down the build and save you need. Decide whether the group is starting on Build 42 or preserving a Build 41 world. Confirm the provider offers that exact branch before paying.
  2. List the Workshop collection and expected group size. Ask about compatibility for the chosen branch and how the panel handles setup, configuration, and load order.
  3. Compare like with like. Record RAM, storage, billing period, recurring checkout total, server location, and whether the plan is constrained by slots or another measure.
  4. Verify recovery and administration. Check backup frequency and location, restore steps, file access, migration options, and what admin controls are included.
  5. Confirm the order details at checkout. Plan inventory, locations, prices, taxes, and billing terms may change after a provider page or comparison was captured.
