Duck.ai is the clearest match if you want a consumer AI assistant whose chats are not used to train models by default. DuckDuckGo says chats are not recorded or stored by default and are not used for training by DuckDuckGo or the underlying providers. Claude is another privacy-oriented choice, but Anthropic lists safety-review and explicit opt-in exceptions. ChatGPT consumer accounts require you to disable training, while Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts have a separate no-training default. Gemini is configurable: its treatment depends on Gemini Apps Activity and account settings, and Google documents an abuse-or-harm exception for recordings.
No-training is not the same as no processing. Short-term caching, retention, abuse prevention, safety review, provider routing, and account activity can still apply. Use the comparison and setup steps below to choose an assistant for your actual sensitivity level.
Quick answer: which assistant is most private?
The answer depends on whether you mean “not used to improve models,” “not retained,” or “not accessible to reviewers.” Those are different promises. On the evidence available for these services, Duck.ai has the most direct consumer-facing no-training statement. Claude has a privacy-friendly default with clearly stated exceptions. ChatGPT consumer users must change a setting to opt out, whereas its Business, Enterprise, and Edu offerings use a different organizational default. Gemini gives you controls through Gemini Apps Activity, but its behavior depends on those settings and includes an abuse-or-harm exception for recordings.

What “does not train on your data” really means
Model training is only one possible use of a conversation. A service can exclude a chat from training while still processing it to generate an answer, keeping a temporary cache, detecting abuse, investigating a safety incident, or routing an anonymized request to an underlying model provider. Conversely, a training opt-out does not automatically mean that a conversation disappears immediately or that no employee or contractor can review it under a documented safety process.

Training versus model improvement
Providers use different labels for related activities: training, improving the model, product improvement, or service improvement. Read the exact control and its scope. A switch that prevents “model improvement” may not change operational logging, billing records, fraud detection, or legal retention. Treat the wording as a boundary around one purpose, not a promise that the service never handles the content.
Retention and deletion
Retention answers how long a provider keeps a prompt, response, attachment, or technical log. Duck.ai’s published explanation says prompt caching may hold chats in short-term memory for up to one hour to reduce token costs and improve speed. That is temporary processing, even though the chats are not recorded or stored by default and are not used for training. Other assistants may retain activity according to account, plan, or safety settings, so check the current notice for the account you actually use.
Human and automated safety review
Safety review can be an exception to a no-training rule. Anthropic says a Claude conversation can be used to improve Claude when it is flagged for safety review. Google documents an abuse-or-harm exception for recordings in Gemini. These provisions are designed to investigate misuse or protect people, but they mean “never seen by a reviewer” is a stronger claim than the available policies support.

Underlying providers and routing
An assistant may send an anonymized request to another company’s model. DuckDuckGo’s statement covers both DuckDuckGo and its underlying model providers for training purposes, while also noting that provider requests are anonymized. For any service that does not make that same promise, identify which provider receives the request, what account context travels with it, and whether your plan changes the terms.
Duck.ai: the clearest consumer no-training default
DuckDuckGo’s help guidance states: “By default, Duck.ai does not record or store any of your chats, and your conversations are not used to train chat models by DuckDuckGo or the underlying model providers.” That sentence directly addresses both of the questions most readers ask: whether chats are retained and whether they become training data. It is why Duck.ai is the strongest match for this article’s title among the researched consumer options.

How Duck.ai handles requests
DuckDuckGo says requests sent to providers are anonymized. The service may also cache prompts for up to one hour. The stated purpose is reducing token costs and improving response speed, not building a training corpus. A one-hour cache still matters if you are handling a secret that must not exist outside your device or organization during that window.
What to verify before using it for sensitive work
- Review the current Duck.ai privacy explanation, especially any changes affecting voice features or third-party model behavior.
- Confirm whether the model you selected has additional handling terms beyond DuckDuckGo’s default statement.
- Do not paste credentials, private keys, regulated records, or information that your employer forbids sending to an external service.
- Remember that anonymization reduces identifying information sent to a provider; it does not make the text itself harmless if the text contains unique secrets.
Who should choose Duck.ai
Choose Duck.ai when your priority is a simple consumer workflow with a provider-level no-training statement and no default chat storage. It is particularly suitable for brainstorming, general research, and ordinary personal questions where you still want a lower data footprint. Organizations with contractual, residency, or audit requirements should obtain their own legal and security review rather than treating a consumer default as an enterprise guarantee.

Claude: privacy-oriented by default, with explicit exceptions
Anthropic’s consumer notice dated March 16, 2026 says chats and coding sessions are used to improve Claude when you choose to allow improvement, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when you otherwise explicitly opt in. The accurate shorthand is therefore “not used by default, with stated exceptions,” not “never used.”
Use Incognito for a stronger boundary
Anthropic states that Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. Use that mode when you want to avoid relying on a global account preference for a particular conversation. Treat Incognito as a training-use control, not proof that the conversation cannot be processed for abuse prevention, delivered to the service, or retained under another applicable rule.
Check the Model Improvement setting
- Open Claude’s account or privacy settings.
- Locate the control labeled Model Improvement or equivalent wording.
- Leave improvement disabled unless you intentionally want to contribute conversations to that purpose.
- For especially sensitive prompts, start a new Incognito chat rather than relying only on the account-wide switch.
- Recheck the setting after a major product or policy change, because labels and defaults can change.
Understand the safety-review exception
A conversation flagged for safety review can be used to improve Claude under Anthropic’s stated policy. Avoid sending information that would create unacceptable exposure if a safety investigation required access. If you are testing a security control, use synthetic data and fabricated identifiers instead of live secrets or customer records.

ChatGPT: different rules for consumer and organizational accounts
OpenAI’s consumer policy says that when people use individual services such as ChatGPT, OpenAI may use their content to train its models. Consumer users who do not want ordinary content used for model improvement must opt out through the privacy portal or ChatGPT’s Data Controls.
Turn off training on a consumer account
- Open ChatGPT and enter Settings.
- Open Data Controls, or use the privacy portal associated with your account.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone (the wording may be presented with a similar label in a revised interface).
- Save or confirm the change, then verify that the control remains off after signing out and back in.
- Check the setting again when you switch devices, workspaces, or account types; a consumer account and an organizational workspace can have different policies.
This opt-out addresses model-improvement use. It does not by itself answer how long chats remain available, what safety review can access, or how files and connected services are handled. Read the current retention and safety terms before sharing confidential material.
Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts
OpenAI’s Help Center states that prompts, responses, and files from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu are not used to improve models unless the organization agrees otherwise. That is a materially different default from the consumer policy. It still does not replace internal governance: administrators may set retention rules, organizations may approve a different data-use arrangement, and users remain responsible for following workplace or school policy.
When ChatGPT is appropriate
ChatGPT can be appropriate when you can enforce the consumer opt-out or when your organization uses Business, Enterprise, or Edu with an approved data policy. If you cannot verify which account and workspace you are in, assume the more permissive consumer rule and do not submit sensitive content until the setting is confirmed.
Gemini Apps: configurable privacy, not a blanket no-training promise
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Gemini activity is saved and processed under the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice when activity is enabled. The practical result is that your privacy posture depends on Gemini Apps Activity and related account settings, rather than a single universal no-training default.

Review Gemini Apps Activity before chatting
- Open the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub or your Google Account privacy controls.
- Find Gemini Apps Activity and check whether it is enabled for the account you plan to use.
- Review the available auto-delete, retention, and activity-management choices.
- Check whether the account is personal, managed by an employer or school, or subject to family or regional controls.
- After changing a setting, confirm which future conversations it covers; a setting change may not retroactively alter already processed activity.
Recordings and the abuse-or-harm exception
Google says it does not use recordings to train the generative AI models powering its services except to address abuse or harm. That exception is important if you use voice features: a recording can still be processed for a safety investigation even where ordinary training use is excluded. Avoid speaking secrets aloud and disable or avoid voice features when a written, less revealing prompt will do.
When Gemini may fit
Gemini is reasonable for users who are comfortable auditing activity controls and accepting a documented safety exception. It is not the best choice for someone seeking a simple, categorical “never used for training” promise without checking account settings each time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Side-by-side decision framework
Use the following order when evaluating an assistant. The first question eliminates options that cannot meet your requirement; the later questions help you choose among the survivors.
1. Is training exclusion a default or an opt-out?
- Default exclusion: Duck.ai states that chats are not used for training by DuckDuckGo or its underlying providers by default.
- Default exclusion with exceptions: Claude does not use chats to improve Claude unless improvement is allowed, a safety review applies, or you explicitly opt in.
- Opt-out required: ChatGPT consumer users must disable Improve the model for everyone.
- Setting-dependent: Gemini depends on Gemini Apps Activity and related account context.
2. Can you use a private session?
Claude provides Incognito chats and states that they are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. Duck.ai’s default is already oriented toward non-recording and non-training, with short-term caching noted. ChatGPT and Gemini require you to inspect the controls available to your particular account and interface.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →3. What happens during a safety investigation?
Claude’s safety-review exception and Gemini’s abuse-or-harm exception for recordings mean that a training exclusion does not guarantee zero human or specialist access. ChatGPT users should read its current safety-review terms, and Duck.ai users should review the current policy for voice and provider handling.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
4. Which account type are you using?
Account type can outweigh the product name. ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu have a no-training default for prompts, responses, and files unless the organization agrees otherwise. A personal ChatGPT account follows the consumer policy instead. Gemini settings can also differ between personal and managed accounts.
Setup checklist for privacy-conscious use
- Classify the information. Mark prompts as public, internal, confidential, regulated, or secret before sending them.
- Choose the least-data option that meets the task. Prefer a service with a default training exclusion when you cannot maintain an opt-out reliably.
- Disable model improvement where required. On consumer ChatGPT, turn off Improve the model for everyone; on Claude, leave Model Improvement disabled unless you intentionally opt in.
- Use a private mode for sensitive one-off work. Claude Incognito provides an explicit additional boundary.
- Limit identifiers. Replace names, account numbers, exact addresses, and proprietary project names with neutral labels.
- Remove attachments and voice data you do not need. Text-only, synthetic examples are easier to control than documents or recordings containing hidden metadata.
- Review retention and activity controls. Check Gemini Apps Activity, account history, auto-delete options, and any available deletion controls.
- Record the configuration. For team use, document the account type, setting, date checked, and approved data categories.
- Recheck after policy or interface changes. Privacy defaults and labels can change without changing the assistant’s name.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing “not training” with “not stored”
A service can exclude chats from training while retaining them for operations or safety. Duck.ai’s one-hour prompt cache is a concrete example of temporary processing alongside a no-recording, no-training default.
Assuming a business plan follows consumer rules
ChatGPT’s Business, Enterprise, and Edu policies differ from its consumer policy. Always verify the workspace and administrator agreement instead of inferring protection from the product’s familiar name.
Relying on a setting you never verify
An opt-out is useful only when it is enabled for the account and workspace that receive the prompt. Recheck ChatGPT Data Controls after account changes and Gemini Apps Activity after switching Google accounts.
Sending real secrets to test privacy
Do not test an assistant with production passwords, API keys, customer records, medical details, or unreleased credentials. Use fabricated values and synthetic documents; privacy controls cannot undo exposure that already occurred.
Ignoring voice and third-party model paths
Voice recordings can have separate rules, including Gemini’s abuse-or-harm exception. An assistant that routes requests to underlying providers may also have provider-specific behavior. Review those paths before enabling voice or selecting a different model.
Recommendations by situation
| Your priority | Most suitable starting point | Reason and caution |
|---|---|---|
| Strongest simple consumer no-training default | Duck.ai | Direct statement covering DuckDuckGo and underlying providers; allow for up to one hour of prompt caching. |
| Private individual sessions with a dedicated mode | Claude with Incognito chats | Incognito chats are excluded from improvement even when Model Improvement is enabled; safety-review exceptions still apply. |
| Already using ChatGPT personally | ChatGPT with Improve the model for everyone turned off | Opt-out is required for consumer accounts; verify retention and safety terms separately. |
| Managed workplace or school deployment | ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Edu, subject to organizational approval | No-training default covers prompts, responses, and files unless the organization agrees otherwise; administrators control governance. |
| Google-centered workflow with activity auditing | Gemini with carefully reviewed Gemini Apps Activity settings | Configurable rather than categorical; recordings have an abuse-or-harm exception. |
How to keep the choice current
Privacy policies and interface labels are living documents. Revisit the provider’s current privacy notice when a model, account type, voice feature, or workspace changes. Record the date you checked the setting and the exact account used. If the wording shifts from “not used by default” to a qualified statement, update your internal guidance and stop sending sensitive material until the new terms are understood.
