Start with the game’s native display resolution and highest available quality, then change one option at a time only if your frame times are uneven. Prison Run and Gun is a lightweight 2D pixel-art puzzle platformer. Its published Windows minimum is a 2 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, Intel GMA 900 graphics and 100 MB of storage (Steam, 2016), so most modern computers have substantial headroom. The settings that matter most are sharp scaling, sensible frame pacing and avoiding unnecessary resolution reductions—not chasing an unverified FPS number.
What the published requirements tell you
Steam describes Prison Run and Gun as “a retro puzzle platformer with modern gameplay and mechanics.” The Windows requirements published in 2016 are unusually low for a PC game:
| Requirement | Published minimum | How to use it when choosing settings |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 2 GHz | A very old dual-core class system may meet the listing but still have inconsistent frame times if other programs are busy. |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM | Close browsers, launchers and recording tools if Windows is close to its memory limit. |
| Graphics | Intel GMA 900 | The baseline is from an integrated GPU generation that predates most current PCs; do not lower quality automatically on a modern integrated GPU. |
| Storage | 100 MB | The game itself is small. Free space and drive health can still affect general system behavior, but no special SSD requirement is published. |
Steam also marks an XInput gamepad as recommended. SteamDB lists Unity Engine, Windows, macOS and Linux support, and records that the default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck (record updated 2026). That statement supports using the default configuration as a starting point; it does not establish a universal frame rate for every computer, operating system or display.
The requirements do not document exact graphics-slider names, a launch-parameter list or laboratory FPS results. Any recommendation below that goes beyond the published numbers is a practical starting point, not a measured benchmark.

Best starting profile on a modern PC
Use this profile before changing anything. It preserves the game’s pixel-art intent while giving your hardware the least unnecessary work.
| Option or decision | Recommended starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Display resolution | Your monitor’s native resolution | Native output avoids an extra scaling step and keeps the desktop and game image as clean as the display allows. |
| Quality preset | Highest available | The published minimum is extremely modest, and no evidence shows that modern systems need a reduced preset. |
| Scaling | Sharp or integer-like scaling, if offered | Whole-number pixel enlargement keeps hard pixel edges. Fractional scaling can make sprites and text look soft. |
| Frame-rate limit | A cap that matches or divides evenly into your display refresh rate | A cap can reduce needless rendering and smooth frame-time delivery. The appropriate value depends on your monitor; no game-specific target is published. |
| Vertical synchronization | Leave the default initially; test the alternative only if you see tearing or uneven delivery | V-sync behavior depends on the display and driver. There is no documented Prison Run and Gun-specific recommendation. |
| Effects | Highest available | Reduce effects only after confirming that they are the cause of a problem. |
Apply the profile in the game’s own options if those controls are exposed. Because the authoritative listings do not provide the exact menu labels, do not assume that a setting called “quality,” “scale,” “effects” or “frame limit” exists on every platform or build.
Why native resolution and sharp scaling matter for pixel art
Native output avoids needless softness
Lowering the game’s internal resolution and asking the monitor to enlarge it may increase performance on a genuinely constrained system, but it also gives the display fewer source pixels to work with. On pixel art, that can make diagonal edges, small characters and interface text look blurred. If the game already runs smoothly, reducing resolution trades away clarity without solving a real problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Integer-like scaling preserves block shapes
When a game or display offers integer scaling, each source pixel is enlarged by a whole-number factor. That keeps neighboring pixels from being blended into intermediate colors. Select the sharpest or integer-like option available, then check a static scene with small text and diagonal outlines. If the image is crisp but surrounded by black bars, that is usually preferable to a full-screen stretch that distorts pixel proportions.
When a lower resolution is justified
Use a lower internal resolution only after observing repeatable stutter or uneven frame times at native resolution. Lower one step, play the same demanding section, and compare consistency rather than relying on a brief change in the FPS counter. If the image becomes soft while the hitching remains, restore native resolution and investigate background load, drivers or display synchronization instead.

Step-by-step setup procedure
- Record the baseline. Start the game with its default configuration. Play several sections, including movement, combat and areas with the most on-screen activity you can find. Note whether the problem is constant slowness, occasional hitching, tearing or only visual softness.
- Set native resolution. In the display or video options, choose the monitor’s native mode if it is available. If the game lists only a few modes, choose the one that matches the operating system display setting rather than an arbitrary lower value.
- Choose the highest quality. Select the highest available preset or leave quality at its default when no preset is exposed. This is a reasoned baseline based on the very low 2016 minimum, not a measured guarantee.
- Set sharp scaling. Choose integer-like, nearest-neighbor or otherwise sharp scaling when the game or display provides that choice. If no scaling control exists, keep native resolution and avoid forcing a fractional stretch through the driver.
- Test synchronization. Leave synchronization at its initial value for one play session. If you see horizontal tearing, test the other available synchronization mode. If input feels delayed, compare both modes in the same section and keep the one that feels more consistent on your display.
- Choose a sensible cap. If a frame-rate limit is available, use a value your computer can hold steadily and that fits your monitor’s refresh rate. A stable cap is generally preferable to a rapidly fluctuating maximum, but the game’s documentation does not specify a universal number.
- Change one variable. If the issue persists, lower one visual option by one step, replay the same section and write down the result. Do not change resolution, effects, synchronization and the frame cap simultaneously; doing so hides the cause.
- Keep the better image when performance is equal. If two profiles feel equally smooth, restore the higher resolution or sharper scaling. The goal is consistent frame delivery with the clearest pixels, not the largest unverified counter reading.
Recommended profiles by computer capability
Current desktop or laptop
- Native display resolution.
- Highest available quality and effects.
- Sharp or integer-like scaling.
- A frame cap appropriate to the display, if needed for consistency.
- Default synchronization first; change it only after observing tearing or uneven delivery.
There is no reason in the published requirements to begin with a reduced preset on a recent discrete GPU or modern integrated graphics. Start high and remove only the option associated with a reproducible issue.
Older integrated-graphics laptop
- Begin with native resolution and the highest preset, then test a one-step reduction if frame times are inconsistent.
- If the game offers separate effects controls, reduce effects before sacrificing resolution; this keeps sprites and text sharper.
- Keep sharp scaling enabled. A lower but clean image is preferable to a higher-resolution mode softened by fractional scaling.
- Use the operating system’s high-performance power mode while plugged in, if that option exists, and close applications that compete for CPU time or memory.
The Intel GMA 900 listed by Steam is a minimum reference from 2016, not a recommendation for a particular modern driver or laptop mode. A machine that technically meets the requirement can still suffer from heat, power-saving clocks or background activity.

The 2 GB RAM minimum leaves little room for Windows and background software. Meeting the published minimum does not mean that every multitasking scenario will be smooth.
Steam Deck
SteamDB reports that the default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck. Treat the default profile as the baseline, preserve sharp scaling where the device’s display controls allow it, and change only one option when troubleshooting. That report is a configuration observation, not a promised FPS figure or a guarantee for every Steam Deck software version.
Diagnose the symptom before lowering quality
| What you observe | Likely area to test | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The picture is blurry but motion is smooth | Scaling or non-native output | Return to native resolution and choose sharp or integer-like scaling. |
| Motion is consistently slow | Resolution, effects or hardware limits | Lower one visual option by one step and repeat the same scene. |
| Short hitches occur while average motion looks fine | Background processes, power management or frame pacing | Close competing programs, use a stable cap and check whether the hitch repeats in the same location. |
| Horizontal lines appear during movement | Display synchronization | Test the available synchronization modes and keep the cleaner result. |
| Controls feel delayed | Synchronization, frame queueing or input device | Compare synchronization modes and test a directly connected controller or keyboard. |
| Performance changes after running on battery | Power policy | Plug in the laptop and compare the same section using its performance power mode. |
These are troubleshooting branches, not claims that a particular option is implemented in every release. The authoritative listings do not publish a complete settings menu.

How to make the image clearer without losing performance
Prefer fewer scaling stages
Keep the game at its native output when possible. If the game renders at a smaller internal size, an operating-system or monitor scaler may enlarge it again, creating a second transformation. Avoid forcing additional scaling in a graphics driver unless you need it to correct a specific display problem.
Check text and diagonal edges
Use a repeatable visual check: pause near small interface text, a diagonal platform edge and a character outline. Compare the baseline and each change from the same distance. Pixel art should have stable, deliberate blocks; shimmering or blended edges indicate that the scaling path is changing the source pixels.
Do not confuse brightness with sharpness
Monitor sharpness, contrast and image-enhancement filters can alter the appearance without improving the game’s rendered detail. Adjust those controls only after the game is using a clean resolution and scaling mode, and avoid aggressive enhancement that creates halos around pixel edges.
Keyboard, mouse and controller choices
Steam explicitly recommends an XInput gamepad. An XInput-compatible controller is therefore the clearest officially supported accessory choice for players who prefer analog movement or a console-style layout. Connect it before launching if the game does not detect devices added later, then verify every action in the controls screen if one is available.
Keyboard play remains a practical option for players who prefer digital left-right and jump inputs. Compare devices by control consistency rather than assuming one is faster: an input problem can feel like a frame-rate problem when a key is missed, a controller is not recognized or an analog stick is drifting. Test the same short section with the keyboard and an XInput pad before changing graphics quality.

Frame caps, synchronization and frame-time consistency
A frame-rate cap limits how much work the renderer attempts when it could otherwise run far above the display’s refresh rate. For a lightweight game, that can reduce unnecessary heat and fan activity and make delivery more even. The correct cap depends on the monitor and the rate your computer can sustain; no authoritative source supplies a Prison Run and Gun target or benchmark.
Synchronization can remove visible tearing by coordinating completed frames with display scans, but the trade-off can vary by driver and display. Test it in a section with horizontal movement, then judge three things separately: visible tearing, control response and repeated hitching. Keep the mode that gives the best balance on your hardware rather than applying a universal rule.

Lowering every setting immediately
This often produces a softer image without proving that graphics load was the problem. Restore the highest preset, then change one option at a time.
Chasing an FPS number that is not documented
No measured FPS result is published in the authoritative material for this game. Use repeatable sections and frame-time consistency as your evidence, and describe your own result as hardware- and configuration-specific.
Using fractional scaling on pixel art
Fractional enlargement blends source pixels. Return to native output and select the sharpest or integer-like scaling path available.

Blaming the game for system-wide stutter
If other applications also hitch, inspect background CPU or memory use, power mode, thermal behavior and display-driver status before reducing game quality. The game’s 100 MB storage listing does not imply that it requires a maintenance utility or special optimization software.
Changing several settings at once
Multiple simultaneous changes make it impossible to identify the cause. Keep a short record of each profile, the scene tested and the observed result, then revert the last change if the symptom worsens.
What you can reasonably expect
The published minimum—2 GHz CPU, 2 GB RAM, Intel GMA 900 graphics and 100 MB storage—indicates that the game targets very modest hardware. SteamDB’s 2026 record adds that its default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck and confirms Windows, macOS and Linux support. Together, those facts justify a high-quality, native-resolution starting profile on most current PCs, but they do not promise identical performance across operating systems, displays, drivers or power modes.
The campaign contains 30 sections according to Steam. Use several different sections when testing, because a setting that appears smooth in a quiet room may behave differently during a busier scene. Keep the profile that delivers consistent frame times and crisp pixels throughout the sections you actually play.
A compact decision checklist
- Are you using the monitor’s native resolution?
- Is the highest available quality preset still selected?
- Is scaling sharp or integer-like rather than fractional?
- Can you reproduce the stutter in the same section?
- Did you change only one setting since the last test?
- Have you closed competing applications and checked the laptop’s power mode?
- Did you test synchronization for tearing and input feel separately?
- Have you tried the officially recommended XInput gamepad if keyboard input feels unreliable?
- Are you avoiding conclusions based on an FPS number that has not been published for this game?
Bottom line
For Prison Run and Gun, the best first configuration is native resolution, the highest available quality, sharp or integer-like scaling and a display-appropriate frame cap. Because the game’s listed minimum hardware is exceptionally old and SteamDB reports good default performance on Steam Deck, most players should not need aggressive reductions. If a specific computer stutters, lower one effect or resolution step, test the same section, and keep the sharpest profile that remains consistently smooth.
