For most households that print every month, the best place to start is a refillable ink-tank all-in-one. You pay more or less up front depending on the model, then replace bottles rather than small cartridges. The right choice still depends on your page volume, color and photo needs, and whether you require an automatic document feeder (ADF), automatic duplex printing, faxing, or a particular regional model. Compare the printer price plus realistic bottle refills over the period you expect to keep it; a large advertised page-yield number by itself does not prove the lowest cost per page.
Which printer with inexpensive ink should you buy?
Use this decision rule:
- Choose the Canon PIXMA G3270 when you want a straightforward wireless print/copy/scan tank all-in-one and its simplex workflow is sufficient.
- Choose the Brother MFC-T780DW when an ADF, automatic two-sided printing, wireless networking, and a longer included warranty matter more than the simplest feature set.
- Compare a specific Epson EcoTank model when you want Epson’s cartridge-free platform, but verify that model’s features, bottle number, local price, and availability rather than applying a family-wide assumption.
- Compare a specific HP Smart Tank model when it is sold in your region and its exact specification meets your needs; HP’s published figures are model- and region-dependent.
These are categories and candidates, not a universal ranking. Ink costs, yields, paper handling, and purchase prices differ by model and country. The cheapest printer to run for a student printing a few pages a week may not be the cheapest choice for a home office printing hundreds of pages a month.
Why refillable ink tanks can reduce running cost
A cartridge printer packages a relatively small amount of ink in each cartridge. A tank printer stores ink in reservoirs that you refill from bottles. The bottle system usually means fewer consumable purchases for regular printing, and the printer can arrive with a large initial supply. Epson describes its EcoTank range as cartridge-free and bases its savings comparisons on the cost and yield of replacement bottles. Canon and Brother also sell refillable tank systems.
The financial benefit appears only when you print enough to use the ink. If a printer sits for long periods, the higher purchase price of a tank model may take longer to recover. Photo-heavy pages also consume color ink much faster than lightly covered text pages. Treat the manufacturer’s yield as a planning estimate, not a promise of personal output: content, print mode, setup, maintenance, and test method all affect the result.

Calculate total ownership cost instead of chasing the biggest yield
Compare the cost of ownership over a period that matches your use, such as three years. Include the printer, replacement bottles, and the amount of paper you expect to buy. A useful calculation is:
Total cost = purchase price + (replacement bottles used during the period × price per bottle or set) + paper cost
Then divide that total by the number of pages you expect to print. If the printer includes starter ink, calculate the first period separately from later periods: starter bottles may cover many pages, while a replacement set may have a different price and yield. Keep black-only pages and color pages separate if your workload is mostly monochrome.

Manufacturers do not use one universal yield test. Epson’s 2026 announcement says its savings and cost-per-ISO-page comparisons use replacement-bottle cost versus the cost of enough standard-capacity cartridges to reach the bottle yields, with MSRP and cartridge yields as of May 2026. That is Epson’s comparison basis, not an independent market-wide measurement; read the full methodology in its 2026 EcoTank announcement.
Do not place an in-box starter-ink figure beside a replacement-set figure and call them equivalent. Brother’s quoted pages for the MFC-T780DW refer to the bottles supplied in the box, while Canon’s principal figures refer to a full replacement bottle set. The package contents and test conditions are different.

Canon PIXMA G3270: a simple tank all-in-one
The PIXMA G3270 combines wireless printing, copying, and scanning with Canon’s GI-21 bottle system. Canon’s brochure identifies the black bottle as pigment ink and the color bottles as dye ink. In default mode, Canon estimates up to 6,000 black-and-white pages or 7,700 color pages per full replacement bottle set. Its Economy Mode estimates rise to up to 7,600 black-and-white pages and 8,100 color pages. These are manufacturer estimates, and the mode must stay attached to the number when you compare it.
The brochure’s specification is for simplex printing. Do not assume that the G3270 will automatically print both sides; if duplex output is a routine requirement, choose a model whose specification explicitly includes automatic duplex.

Use the exact GI-21 bottles listed for your printer. Canon’s support article, dated May 29, 2026, identifies the G3270 among the compatible PIXMA G-Series models and explains the bottle family. Check that article before ordering because a similar-looking bottle number, a different regional package, or a MAXIFY bottle may not be interchangeable. See Canon’s GI-21 compatibility list.
Who should choose it
- Choose it for everyday documents, schoolwork, forms, and occasional color output when printing on one side is acceptable.
- It is a better fit when you want a defined GI-21 consumable family and do not need an ADF or fax workflow.
- Before purchase, compare the current local printer price and GI-21 refill price; neither is fixed by the brochure figures.
Brother MFC-T780DW: the feature-rich home-office alternative
The MFC-T780DW adds the features that often justify spending more on a home-office printer: an automatic document feeder, automatic duplex printing, wireless connectivity, and color print, copy, and scan functions. Brother’s U.S. product page lists a three-year limited warranty.
Brother says the box includes two starter black bottles with approximately 14,625 black pages combined, plus starter cyan, magenta, and yellow bottles rated at approximately 4,400 color pages. Those numbers describe the included starter bottles, not necessarily the yield or price of a later replacement-bottle set. Use them to understand the initial package, then price the compatible replacement bottles for your region. Brother’s listed BTD180 bottle family should be matched to the exact regional model and color before ordering.

Who should choose it
- Choose it when you scan contracts, receipts, or multi-page school and business documents and want an ADF rather than placing each sheet on the flatbed.
- Choose it when automatic two-sided printing saves paper and manual page turning.
- Do not use the large starter-black figure to estimate your long-term cost without checking the price and yield of replacement bottles.
Epson EcoTank: select by model, not by family name
EcoTank is a broad cartridge-free platform covering different home and office printers. Epson’s current product material presents bottle cost and yield as the basis for its cartridge-savings comparisons. That makes the family a sensible category to investigate, but it does not create one universal EcoTank specification.
Start with the features you need, then identify the exact model sold in your country. Verify whether it has an ADF, automatic duplex, fax, the required wireless or mobile functions, and the right paper capacity. Record the bottle part numbers and current replacement prices for that model. A compact home unit and a larger office unit may use different bottles and produce very different ownership costs even though both carry the EcoTank name. Epson’s comparison assumptions are described in its 2026 product announcement.
HP Smart Tank: check the regional SKU and yield conditions
HP’s Smart Tank family also uses refillable reservoirs, but the included yield, bottle number, speed, duplex capability, and document-feeder options depend on the individual model. The cited product-family information is on HP Canada’s site, so a Canadian specification should not automatically be applied to a U.S., U.K., or other regional SKU.
HP states that actual yield varies with what is printed and other factors. Use the exact model’s manual and bottle listing, confirm that the warranty and service are available where you live, and repeat the same total-cost calculation used for Canon, Brother, or Epson. The family overview is at HP Canada’s Smart Tank page.

Match the printer to your workflow
If you print mostly black text
Prioritize black-bottle price, black yield, text speed, and automatic duplex if you print reports or drafts. A color tank can still be economical when you occasionally need color, but do not pay for a feature set you will never use. Ask how many pages you print in a typical month and whether the printer’s black yield is quoted for standard or economy mode.
If you print school projects and mixed color documents
Look for a four-color tank system, wireless support, and a paper path that handles the sizes you actually use. Compare the cost of a complete color replacement set, not only the black bottle. Color coverage varies dramatically between a page of highlighted text and a full-page graphic.
If you print photos
Confirm the printer’s supported photo sizes, media handling, color-ink configuration, and software before treating a high page yield as a photo advantage. The published Canon figures are black-and-white and color page estimates in specified modes; they are not a guarantee of a particular number of borderless photographs. Price photo paper separately because it can dominate the cost of a photo even when ink is inexpensive.
If you scan stacks of documents
An ADF is the decisive feature. The Brother MFC-T780DW explicitly includes one; the Canon G3270 comparison material identifies print, copy, and scan functions but does not establish an ADF. If you regularly scan multiple sheets, verify the exact specification rather than assuming every all-in-one has a feeder.
If you need automatic two-sided printing
Choose a model that explicitly says automatic duplex printing. The Brother MFC-T780DW lists automatic duplex. The cited G3270 brochure specifies simplex printing, so it should not be presented as an automatic-duplex printer.

If you need faxing
Check the exact model’s feature list. Tank families contain both fax-equipped and non-fax models, and a family name is not enough evidence that fax is present.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose and price a low-ink-cost printer
- Measure your real workload. Count average monthly black-only pages, color pages, occasional photo pages, and peak-month volume. Include pages printed by every household member or office user.
- Write down non-negotiable features. Mark ADF, automatic duplex, wireless, mobile printing, copying, scanning, fax, paper sizes, and any required operating-system support.
- Shortlist exact regional models. Do not compare a family label such as EcoTank or Smart Tank without a model number. Record the model’s bottle part numbers.
- Separate starter ink from replacement ink. Note the number and stated yield of bottles in the box, then find the price and stated yield of the replacement bottles you can actually buy locally.
- Calculate ownership cost. Use the formula above for your planned ownership period. Run a low-volume and high-volume scenario if your printing varies by season.
- Check the yield qualification. Record whether the figure is black, color, economy mode, ISO-based, or an in-box starter estimate. Do not merge unlike figures into one ranking.
- Verify consumable compatibility immediately before ordering. A bottle family that fits one model or region may not fit another. Canon’s GI-21 list is an example of the model-level check required.
- Confirm warranty and availability. Check the local manufacturer page for service terms, included accessories, and whether the printer and bottles are currently sold in your country.
- Recalculate after prices change. Ink and hardware prices move independently. A printer that was cheapest at launch may not remain cheapest after a refill-price change.
Common mistakes that make “cheap ink” expensive
- Buying on yield alone: a page count without its mode, bottle package, and test method is not a cost-per-page result.
- Comparing starter bottles with replacement sets: the first box can contain a different quantity of ink from the set you will buy later.
- Ignoring purchase price: a higher initial price needs enough printing volume and time to be recovered through refills.
- Choosing the wrong workflow: manual duplexing or feeding one scan at a time can cost more time than the ink savings are worth.
- Assuming bottles cross models: check the exact bottle number and compatibility list; do not pour an unverified ink family into a tank.
- Applying a regional claim globally: HP’s cited family page is Canadian, and warranty, SKU, and bottle availability can differ elsewhere.
- Forgetting paper and photos: paper is part of ownership cost, and heavy color coverage consumes ink faster than ordinary text.
- Leaving any inkjet unused for long periods: if you print only a handful of pages per year, compare the tank’s upfront cost and maintenance needs with alternatives designed for occasional use.
Practical setup and maintenance for predictable ink use
- Install the bottles exactly as the manual shows. Keep each color in its matching tank and retain the bottle packaging until you have confirmed the printer works.
- Complete the initial charging and alignment routine. The first setup uses ink and establishes the printhead; skipping alignment can cause avoidable reprints.
- Choose draft or economy mode for internal documents. Reserve higher-quality settings for pages that need them, and record the mode when estimating your consumption.
- Use duplex when it suits the document. This reduces paper use, but check the result for forms, photos, and paper that may show through.
- Print a nozzle check when output shows gaps or streaks. Follow the printer’s cleaning sequence rather than repeatedly running deep cleans, which consume ink.
- Store unopened bottles as directed. Keep the cap and seal intact until needed, and use the exact color and bottle number specified for the model.
- Track bottles and pages. A simple log of refill date, bottle cost, and approximate page count gives you a personal cost-per-page figure that is more useful than a headline yield.
What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you
Canon’s G3270 figures are useful for estimating the scale of a full GI-21 set, but the default-mode and Economy Mode numbers describe different settings. Brother’s MFC-T780DW figures show the amount of starter ink supplied in the box, including approximately 14,625 black pages from two bottles and approximately 4,400 pages from the three starter color bottles. Epson’s comparison uses its own replacement-cost and ISO-page assumptions, with MSRP and cartridge yields as of May 2026. HP explicitly warns that actual Smart Tank yield varies with the printed content and other factors.
Those qualifications mean you can use the numbers to build scenarios, not to declare a winner without prices and workload. There is no single market-wide statistic that identifies the cheapest printer or an average household ink cost. Your monthly pages, color mix, local bottle price, and required features determine the result.

Start with a refillable tank all-in-one if you print regularly and want to reduce cartridge purchases. Compare the Canon PIXMA G3270 for a simple wireless print/copy/scan workflow, and compare the Brother MFC-T780DW when an ADF and automatic duplex printing are worth paying for. Treat Epson EcoTank and HP Smart Tank as model families that require an exact regional selection. Before buying, calculate purchase price plus replacement bottles for your expected volume, preserve every yield qualification, and verify the bottle number. That process—not the largest page-count claim—identifies the printer with inexpensive ink for your household.
