The best printer for an iPhone depends on what you print. Choose an AirPrint-enabled wireless home printer for regular documents and mixed household jobs, a portable wireless document printer when you need conventional pages away from home, or a compact photo printer for small prints. There is no single model that is best for all three jobs.

Start by checking the exact model’s AirPrint support, the paper sizes it accepts, its connection options, and the availability and cost of its model-specific ink or photo media. Apple’s AirPrint workflow is intentionally simple, but compatibility and setup details still vary by printer.

Choose the printer category before choosing a model

“Best printer for iPhone” is really three different buying questions. A printer that is convenient for a school form at home may be a poor choice for travel, while a pocket photo printer is not designed to replace a document printer. Match the output to the category first.

Home wireless printer for recurring jobs

A wireless home printer or all-in-one is the practical choice for documents, web pages, email attachments, occasional photos, and other mixed household work. It normally stays connected to your home Wi-Fi, so an iPhone can discover it through AirPrint whenever both devices are on the same network. Epson’s AirPrint compatibility information demonstrates that supported models span home all-in-ones, photo printers, work printers, and mobile WorkForce models.

Portable document printer

A portable document printer is intended for conventional pages when you are away from your normal desk or office. Canon’s PIXMA TR150 brochure identifies it as a portable wireless printer and lists AirPrint among its features. That makes it a relevant path for travelers, field workers, students, and anyone who occasionally needs a full document without carrying a full-size home printer.

Portability brings compromises. Before buying, check the supported paper sizes, power arrangements, battery or adapter requirements stated by the manufacturer, and the exact wireless setup. The brochure’s compatibility notes are model-specific and should not be treated as universal requirements for every iPhone or every portable printer.

Compact photo printer

A compact photo printer solves a different problem: producing small physical photographs from an iPhone. Canon’s SELPHY CP1500 documentation describes iPhone and iPad printing through AirPrint, along with direct Wi-Fi and a dedicated app. It is a better fit for snapshots, albums, cards, or event prints than for multipage reports or ordinary office documents.

Photo printers use model-specific photo paper and supplies. Confirm the media format and ongoing supply availability before purchase, especially if you expect to print many photos.

Category Typical iPhone job Connection paths documented in this material Examples with official compatibility information
Home wireless printer Documents, web pages, email, and occasional photos AirPrint over the same Wi-Fi network Epson AirPrint-supported home and work categories; verify the exact model
Portable document printer Conventional documents while traveling or working away from home AirPrint and model-specific wireless features Canon PIXMA TR150
Compact photo printer Small-format photographs from an iPhone AirPrint, direct Wi-Fi, and a manufacturer app on supported models Canon SELPHY CP1500

What AirPrint does—and what it does not guarantee

AirPrint is Apple’s driverless printing system. Apple’s official support documentation, published April 7, 2026, states: To use an AirPrint-enabled printer, you don’t need to install additional drivers or other software. That removes a common computer-style installation step, but it does not make every printer compatible or every network configuration interchangeable.

Check the exact model

Apple says to search for support by printer brand, model, or category and to consult the manufacturer when a printer is not listed. A brand-level assumption is not enough: two models that look similar can have different wireless or AirPrint support.

Use the printer’s current manual or support page to confirm all of the following:

  • The precise model number is listed as AirPrint-compatible.
  • The intended iPhone app supports a Print command.
  • The paper size and media type match your job.
  • The printer’s firmware, app, or operating-system requirements are still supported in your region.

Same-network operation is the normal path

For ordinary AirPrint use, connect the printer to Wi-Fi and place the iPhone on that same network. A phone using cellular data, a guest network isolated from local devices, or a different Wi-Fi network may not discover the printer even when both connections have internet access. If the model offers direct Wi-Fi, Wireless Direct, or an ad hoc mode, those are separate workflows and should be configured from the model’s instructions.

How to print from an iPhone with AirPrint

The basic process is consistent across many supported apps, including Mail, Photos, and Safari. Labels can differ slightly by app, but the print command remains in the app’s share or action controls.

  1. Connect the printer. Finish the printer’s Wi-Fi setup, then connect the iPhone to the same Wi-Fi network. For a direct connection, follow the model’s manual instead of assuming the normal network procedure applies.
  2. Open the content. In Mail, open the message or attachment; in Photos, select the image; in Safari, open the page or document you want to print.
  3. Open the app’s actions. Tap the Share button or the app’s More or Action menu, then choose Print. Some apps place Print farther down the action list.
  4. Select the printer. Tap Select Printer or the printer field and choose the AirPrint-enabled model that appears.
  5. Set available options. Depending on the app and printer, you may be able to choose a page range, number of copies, color mode, or other options. The printer and app determine which controls are exposed.
  6. Send the job. Tap Print. The iPhone sends the job to the selected printer without a separate driver installation.
  7. Check or cancel it. While the job is active, open the App Switcher and select Print Center to view its status or cancel it. Print Center is a queue monitor, not a replacement for the printer’s own error display.

If Print is missing, the app may not support printing that item. Try saving the content as a document or image and opening it in an app that exposes a Print action, while still checking that the format and layout are suitable for the printer.

When you need a connection other than home Wi-Fi

Some mobile printers are designed for places where a shared router is unavailable. Canon’s SELPHY CP1500 manual documents direct Wi-Fi as an additional route and also explains use of the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app. Brother’s AirPrint support information for selected mobile models describes ad hoc, Wireless Direct, or Wi-Fi connections.

Direct Wi-Fi

In a direct-Wi-Fi arrangement, the printer creates or exposes a network that the iPhone joins. You may need to leave your normal home network temporarily, connect to the printer’s network in iPhone Wi-Fi settings, and then return to your usual network afterward. Follow the model’s security and password instructions exactly.

Wireless Direct or ad hoc modes

These names are not interchangeable across manufacturers. Brother documents these modes for selected PJ and RJ models, not for every printer in its range. Confirm that the exact model supports the mode you need and that iPhone printing is supported over that connection.

Manufacturer apps

A dedicated app can provide a path when the printer’s direct-Wi-Fi workflow requires it or when the app exposes controls that generic AirPrint does not. Canon’s SELPHY manual covers its app as well as AirPrint. An app requirement is model-specific; do not install an app merely because the manufacturer makes one if the printer’s documented AirPrint workflow already meets your needs.

Model paths supported by the available documentation

Canon PIXMA TR150 for portable documents

The PIXMA TR150 brochure describes a portable wireless printer and lists AirPrint. It also describes Canon PRINT app compatibility with Apple devices running iOS 11 or later. The same brochure gives an iOS 7 or later note for its AirPrint functionality. Treat both thresholds as brochure-specific specifications for that product, not as universal iPhone requirements.

Consider this path when your priority is conventional documents away from home. Confirm the current manual, paper support, power options, and regional availability before purchase; the brochure does not establish comparative speed, print quality, or running cost.

Canon SELPHY CP1500 for small photos

The SELPHY CP1500 manual documents printing from an iPhone or iPad with AirPrint. It also covers a direct Wi-Fi connection and the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app. The manual notes that available printing options depend on the app’s AirPrint compatibility, so an option visible in one app may not appear in another.

This model path makes sense when the physical result is a small photograph. It should not be selected as a substitute for a full-size document printer simply because both devices can receive an iPhone job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Epson mobile and home categories

Epson’s U.S. AirPrint information says iPhones and iPads can print emails, photos, web pages, and documents without software downloads, drivers, or cables. Its examples include mobile WorkForce models such as the EC-C110 and WF-110, as well as home all-in-one, photo, and work categories. Use that list to identify possible candidates, then verify current support for the exact model and region.

Brother selected mobile models

Brother’s AirPrint support page covers selected PJ and RJ mobile printers and explains ad hoc, Wireless Direct, and Wi-Fi connections. The page is evidence for the listed models and connection modes only. Do not infer that every Brother printer supports all three methods.

Compare the specifications that affect an iPhone purchase

Once a printer fits your category, compare the features that determine whether it will be convenient in practice. The available documentation supports the following decision axes.

Decision axis Questions to answer before buying
Intended output Will you print full-size documents, mixed household material, or small photos?
Portability Will the printer remain in one place, or must it travel with you?
Connection setup Does it use same-network AirPrint, direct Wi-Fi, Wireless Direct, ad hoc, a manufacturer app, or a combination?
Paper and media Does it accept the sizes and media types you actually intend to use?
Consumables Are the model-specific ink, photo paper, or other supplies available and affordable in your region?
App and iOS requirements Are any stated requirements tied to this exact model and brochure or manual, rather than being universal iPhone rules?

Current evidence here does not establish a reliable winner for print quality, speed, purchase price, or total cost of ownership. Those figures change by model, region, retailer, paper, and ink supply, so compare them only using current, model-specific information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paper, ink, and photo media can determine the real cost

Compatibility is more than seeing the printer in an AirPrint list. A printer may accept an iPhone job yet be unsuitable for the paper you need. Check the exact manual for supported sizes, weights, finishes, and media types. This is especially important for compact photo printers, which depend on dedicated photo media rather than ordinary office paper.

Check consumables before committing to a model:

  • Identify the exact cartridge, ink, ribbon, or photo-paper family for the model.
  • Confirm that supplies are sold in your country and in pack sizes that match your expected volume.
  • Compare recurring supply prices using the same page or photo assumptions; a cartridge price alone is not a running-cost estimate.
  • Look for current availability rather than relying on an old product listing.

The available documentation does not provide comparable current running-cost data across home, portable, and photo categories. It is therefore more accurate to tell readers to verify supplies than to declare one category the cheapest.

Troubleshoot the problems iPhone users see most often

The printer does not appear in the Print menu

  1. Confirm the exact model is listed for AirPrint by Apple or the manufacturer.
  2. Check that the iPhone and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network, not merely connected to networks with internet access.
  3. Wake the printer and clear any error shown on its display.
  4. Move the phone and printer back to the normal home network if you accidentally joined a guest or direct-printer network.
  5. Restart the printer and iPhone, then reopen the app’s Print command.
  6. If the model uses direct Wi-Fi, Wireless Direct, or an app, follow that model’s documented connection sequence instead of the standard same-network steps.

Print is available but the job fails

Check paper loading, cover or cartridge warnings, and the printer’s own queue. In Print Center, cancel the stalled job and send it again after correcting the printer error. If only one app fails, try printing the same content from another supported app; the SELPHY manual specifically notes that options depend on app AirPrint compatibility.

The page or photo is cropped

Review the app’s print range and layout controls, then compare them with the paper loaded and the printer’s supported media. A photo app may offer different choices from Mail or Safari. For a photo printer, use the manufacturer’s documented media and app workflow when AirPrint controls are insufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are asked to install software

AirPrint itself does not require additional drivers or other software, according to Apple. A manufacturer app can still be an optional or model-specific route for direct Wi-Fi or extra controls. Verify why the app is needed before installing it, and use the printer’s manual to determine whether the app is required, optional, or limited to certain functions.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Define the job. Write down whether you need mixed home printing, portable documents, or small photos.
  2. Shortlist the category. Eliminate models designed for a different output before comparing features.
  3. Verify the exact model. Check Apple’s AirPrint information and the current manufacturer documentation.
  4. Choose the connection. Decide whether same-network AirPrint is enough or whether you need direct Wi-Fi, Wireless Direct, ad hoc, or an app.
  5. Check paper and media. Match supported sizes and types to your real documents or photos.
  6. Check supplies. Confirm model-specific ink or photo media availability and recurring prices in your region.
  7. Read the app and iOS notes. Keep model-specific thresholds, such as those in the TR150 brochure, separate from general iPhone requirements.
  8. Plan recovery. Keep the manual’s network-reset and queue-cancellation instructions accessible in case the printer disappears from the iPhone.

Which choice fits common scenarios?

Mostly household documents

Choose an AirPrint-enabled home wireless printer or all-in-one. Prioritize stable same-network discovery, the paper sizes you use, and supplies that are easy to obtain. Occasional photo support is a bonus, not the main selection criterion.

Documents in hotels, vehicles, or temporary workspaces

Look at a portable document model such as the Canon PIXMA TR150 path documented above. Confirm how it connects and receives power in the places you expect to use it; portability is useful only if the complete setup is practical for your travel.

Small photos for immediate sharing

Consider a compact photo model such as the Canon SELPHY CP1500. Check its photo-media format and whether you prefer ordinary AirPrint on a shared network or the documented direct-Wi-Fi and Canon app workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several users with different devices

A home wireless AirPrint model is usually the simplest category to evaluate, but each user’s device still has to reach the same network and each app must expose printing. Verify support for the exact printer rather than assuming that a family name guarantees compatibility.

What the current evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Apple’s AirPrint documentation establishes a driverless workflow and the same-network requirement. The iPhone guide establishes the Print command and Print Center queue controls. Manufacturer manuals and support pages establish model-specific paths: Canon documents AirPrint and direct Wi-Fi for the SELPHY CP1500, Canon identifies AirPrint and wireless features for the PIXMA TR150, Epson lists supported categories and mobile examples, and Brother documents connection modes for selected PJ and RJ models.

Those sources do not constitute a hands-on comparison. They do not prove that one printer is fastest, produces the best photos, costs the least to operate, or offers the best value. Printer lineups, app requirements, AirPrint lists, prices, stock, and consumable availability can change, so verify the exact model documentation and regional details immediately before buying.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
