Short answer: Telcel is the safest default for a trip that crosses several Mexican states because it has the highest published national 4G coverage among Mexico’s three major operators. For a short visit, Telcel Tourist International eSIM has the clearest online, QR-based tourist setup. AT&T Go is a useful eSIM-only alternative with unlimited national calls and SMS, while Movistar’s online eSIM suits travelers who can wait for QR delivery. Your final choice still depends on destination, an unlocked and compatible phone, identity-registration requirements, and whether you need a Mexican number or cross-border service.
Quick picks by traveler type

|---|---|---|---|
| Several states, highways or rural areas | Telcel prepaid SIM or eSIM | Telcel leads the latest national 4G comparison. | A national figure cannot guarantee service at a particular address; check the destination map. |
| A short tourist visit and a phone that supports eSIM | Telcel Tourist International eSIM | Online purchase, QR installation and packages covering Mexico, the United States and Canada are documented for tourists. | The device must be unlocked, eSIM-compatible and connected to Wi-Fi or another internet connection during installation. What “best” means for mobile service in Mexico
There is no single best SIM for every itinerary. A beach resort, a Mexico City visit and a road trip through multiple states create different coverage and activation requirements. Evaluate five things before buying:
- Geography: national travel needs a broader network footprint than one city. Compare the carrier’s destination map with the regulator’s measurements rather than relying on a brand’s national headline.
- Activation timing: an eSIM can be installed before departure, but it requires a compatible, unlocked handset and an internet connection for the QR download. A physical SIM is useful when you arrive without Wi-Fi or use a phone that has no eSIM menu.
- Phone number and identity: local prepaid products generally provide a Mexican line. Tourist products can impose registration steps, so have the requested identity details ready and read the current terms before payment.
- Allowance management: check data quantity, call and SMS inclusions, package validity, renewal method and whether an app is required. “Unlimited” wording may apply to national calls and messages, not necessarily to data.
- Cross-border use: do not assume a Mexico-only prepaid package works in the United States or Canada. Telcel Tourist International explicitly advertises packages for all three countries; verify roaming terms for every other offer.
Coverage: the latest national comparison and its limits
The Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones’ fourth-quarter 2025 comparison reports the following national 4G coverage levels:
| Operator | National 4G coverage | What the figure tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Telcel | 94.4% | Highest of the three operators in this national comparison. |
| AT&T | 91.3% | Second-highest national result in the same comparison. |
| Movistar | 83.4% | Lower national result; local performance can still vary by destination. |
These are national percentages, not a promise of reception at your hotel, campsite or border crossing. The regulator’s interactive map uses crowdsourced 4G measurements and labels areas as excellent, good or regular. Results depend on where people traveled and recorded service, so a lightly measured region may not be represented as reliably as a busy city.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Carrier maps add another qualification: terrain, weather, building materials, congestion and the condition or bands of your handset can change real-world performance. Check the exact municipality, resort, route or neighborhood on the relevant carrier map before purchase. If you are traveling through mountains, deserts or long highway stretches, prioritize the operator with the strongest destination-level evidence rather than choosing solely on package size.
eSIM versus physical SIM in Mexico
When an eSIM is the better fit
An eSIM is a digital chip integrated into the handset. You can buy a plan online, receive a QR code and install the carrier profile without opening the phone. It is convenient when you want service ready before landing, need to keep a home SIM in the phone for two-factor texts, or are moving between countries on a package that includes Mexico, the United States and Canada.
Confirm all three technical conditions before paying:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- The phone is carrier-unlocked; a handset locked to another operator may reject the Mexican profile.
- The model supports eSIM in the country and edition where it was sold. Some regional variants omit eSIM even when the same model name supports it elsewhere.
- There is an available eSIM profile slot. Delete an obsolete profile only after recording any information you still need; removing a profile can require a new QR code to reinstall.
When a physical SIM is safer
Choose a physical prepaid card if your phone has no eSIM support, if you expect to change handsets, or if you want a card that can be moved to a backup phone. You will need a compatible nano-SIM slot and a way to obtain the card. Keep the original SIM and its tray somewhere safe while using the Mexican line.
Telcel options
Telcel Tourist International eSIM
This is the most clearly documented tourist workflow in the available carrier material. It is prepaid, purchased online, installed with a QR code and designed around packages that include Mexico, the United States and Canada. Telcel says the line must be registered to the user and that activation begins when the eSIM is installed.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
The tourist line has a 90-day validity period from activation. Package extensions are available while a package remains active, but exact current package names, data allowances and prices can change. Read the terms shown at checkout instead of assuming that a package purchased today has the same allowance or renewal rule as an older travel guide.
How to install the Telcel tourist profile
- Check the handset. Confirm that it is unlocked, eSIM-compatible and has an unused profile slot.
- Prepare an internet connection. Installation needs Wi-Fi or another working data connection. Do this at home or at a reliable airport or hotel network, not on a remote road.
- Complete the online purchase and registration. Enter the user information requested by Telcel and save the order confirmation.
- Open the phone’s cellular settings. Select the option labeled “Add eSIM,” “Add cellular plan” or an equivalent label, then scan the supplied QR code. Menu wording differs by phone and operating-system version.
- Choose line labels and defaults. Label the new profile “Mexico” so you can distinguish it from your home line. Select which line handles mobile data and whether the home line may use data roaming.
- Wait for activation before removing anything. Telcel states that activation begins when the eSIM is installed. Keep the confirmation and QR information until calls and data work.
This option is especially practical when your itinerary includes the United States or Canada, because those countries are included in the advertised package geography. Inclusion does not eliminate the need to verify the specific package’s data amount, validity and fair-use conditions.
Telcel Amigo prepaid SIM or eSIM
Telcel’s Amigo eSIM page describes the product as a prepaid line on the “Amigo Sin Límite” charging scheme. It is the more natural choice when you want a local Mexican number and a conventional prepaid account rather than a tourist-oriented international bundle. Telcel offers Amigo in physical-SIM and eSIM forms, subject to handset compatibility and the purchase channel’s current availability.
Before buying, confirm whether the current offer includes the exact call, SMS and data allowance you need, how long the package lasts, and how renewals are made. The product description establishes the prepaid category and charging scheme but does not establish one permanent price or allowance for every outlet. Keep the activation receipt and any account credentials so you can add credit or obtain support later.
AT&T Go
AT&T Go is a prepaid offer available only through eSIM on compatible smartphones. AT&T describes unlimited national calls and messages, with packages advertised up to 20 GB for 30 days. Packages are purchased and managed through the Mi AT&T app.

- Secure Hold: Our PopSockets adhesive phone grip gives your cell phone a secure, comfortable hold in hand to help prevent drops while texting, taking photos, or scrolling on the go. Designed to stick firmly to most phone cases and devices.
- Hands-Free Made Easy: Easily turn your PopSocket into a phone stand to prop up your phone anywhere, perfect for watching videos, video calls, or following recipes. A must-have phone holder that keeps your device secure and ready for anything.
- Compatibility: Works with all phones, tablets, and Kindles. Sticks best to smooth, hard plastic cases and may not adhere to silicone or textured cases. Easily swap your PopTop to change up your style.
- Black PopSockets: Simple, refined, and endlessly versatile. A timeless essential for any phone.
- Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.
The offer suits a traveler who is comfortable with app-based management and wants a local-carrier alternative to Telcel. “National” refers to calls and SMS within Mexico; it does not by itself promise US or Canadian roaming. Confirm the package’s destination rules, expiration date and any data conditions in the app before checkout.
AT&T Go setup sequence
- Verify that the phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.
- Install the Mi AT&T app while you still have Wi-Fi or another working connection.
- Choose the AT&T Go prepaid offer and review the allowance and 30-day wording shown for the selected package. The advertised maximum is not a guarantee that every package contains 20 GB.
- Complete any identity or account steps requested in the purchase flow.
- Install the eSIM profile from the app or supplied instructions, then set it as the mobile-data line.
- Test a web page and a national call before leaving reliable coverage, and note where the app displays renewal or top-up controls.
AT&T’s national coverage result is strong in the regulator’s comparison, but the same destination, terrain and handset caveats apply. Use the AT&T map for a specific resort, neighborhood or route.
Movistar Mexico eSIM
Movistar says new-line digital eSIM purchases are available on its website from March 27, 2026. After the order is completed, the QR code is sent to the registered email address; delivery may take up to 72 hours. Identity verification may be requested. That waiting period makes Movistar less suitable for a last-minute arrival than a product that supplies a QR code immediately.
Movistar distinguishes a new-line purchase from porting an existing number. Porting to a Movistar eSIM requires a visit to a service and sales center, so do not plan to complete that particular process entirely online from an airport or hotel.
Movistar online eSIM checklist
- Confirm eSIM support, an unlocked phone and sufficient profile space.
- Place the new-line order on the Movistar website using an email account you can access during the trip.
- Complete any identity-verification request and retain the order number.
- Allow as much as 72 hours for the QR email; check spam or filtered folders without deleting the order confirmation.
- Scan the QR from cellular settings when the message arrives and select Movistar for mobile data.
- If you need to port an existing number, schedule time at a Movistar service and sales center instead of relying on the online new-line flow.
Movistar’s national 4G percentage is lower than Telcel’s and AT&T’s in the fourth-quarter 2025 comparison. That does not determine service at every address, so inspect the Movistar coverage map for your actual destinations.

Which option fits common itineraries?
Multi-state road trip
Start with Telcel because it has the highest published national 4G result. Compare the route against coverage maps, especially before entering mountainous or sparsely populated areas. Download maps, tickets and emergency information over Wi-Fi before departure; no carrier can guarantee uninterrupted service across changing terrain.
One city or resort
Destination-level coverage matters more than the national ranking. Check all three maps for the hotel and nearby neighborhoods, then choose between a physical SIM and eSIM based on your phone and activation timing. A larger data allowance is not useful if the selected network is weak where you will spend the trip.
Mexico plus the United States or Canada
Telcel Tourist International is the only option in this material that explicitly describes packages spanning Mexico, the United States and Canada. Verify that the exact package selected includes all three countries and note its validity. Do not infer equivalent roaming from the domestic wording of AT&T Go or a standard Movistar or Amigo package.
A local Mexican number for bookings or contacts
Telcel Amigo, AT&T Go and a new Movistar eSIM line are local-carrier prepaid paths. Ask the seller how the number is registered, how long it remains active without a package and what information is needed to recover the account. The tourist eSIM also requires registration, but its tourist package and 90-day line validity make it a different use case.

Before you buy: a practical compatibility and account check
- Unlock the phone through your current operator before traveling; a local SIM cannot bypass a carrier lock.
- Record the phone’s model number and regional variant, then verify eSIM support rather than relying on the model family name.
- Check that the phone has current operating-system updates and enough storage for another eSIM profile.
- Back up contacts, authentication methods and travel documents. Keep access to email because QR codes and account notices may be delivered there.
- Decide which line handles data, calls and SMS. Disable data roaming on the home line unless you intentionally want to use its roaming service.
- Save the carrier’s support route, order number and installation instructions offline.
- Read the package’s countries, data amount, call/SMS scope, validity and renewal conditions immediately before payment.
Activation and dual-SIM tips
Most modern phones let you keep a home SIM and a Mexican eSIM active together, but the exact number of stored and active profiles varies by model. Give each line a clear label. Set the Mexican line as the default for data and turn off automatic switching to the home line if your phone offers that setting. Leave the home line enabled for incoming verification texts only if your home operator will not charge unexpected roaming fees.
After activation, test in this order: confirm that the phone displays the Mexican network name, open a lightweight web page, send an SMS if the package includes messaging, and place a national call when calling is part of the offer. A successful QR installation does not prove that the selected package has started or that the phone is using the intended data line.
Validity, renewals and price checking
Prepaid prices and allowances are changeable commercial terms. The available carrier descriptions establish service types and certain advertised limits, not one permanent price list. Check the amount charged, taxes if shown separately, data quantity, expiration date, renewal behavior and top-up method on the purchase screen.

AT&T Go packages are managed in Mi AT&T, and the offer is advertised with plans up to 20 GB for 30 days. Movistar’s key timing issue is QR delivery of up to 72 hours for an online new line. Treat all of these as product terms to verify at purchase, not as a promise that every future package will use the same duration.
Troubleshooting
The QR code will not scan
- Increase screen brightness and display the QR on a second device if you received it by email on the same phone.
- Use the phone’s built-in Add eSIM function rather than a generic camera app.
- Confirm that the profile has not already been installed and that the phone has an available eSIM slot.
- Reconnect to stable Wi-Fi and retry. If the code has expired or was consumed during a failed installation, contact the carrier before deleting any profile.
The QR email has not arrived
For Movistar, allow the stated period of up to 72 hours, check spam and verify that the registered email address is correct. Keep the order number. Do not place duplicate orders until support confirms whether the first order is pending.
The eSIM installed but there is no service
- Make sure the profile is turned on and selected for mobile data.
- Check that the phone is unlocked and that data roaming is enabled only when the carrier’s instructions require it for the package’s country.
- Restart the handset and try an outdoor location with a clear view of the sky.
- Compare the location with the carrier coverage map; buildings, terrain and congestion can explain a difference between the map and your room.
- If calls fail but data works, review whether the selected package includes national voice service. A data connection alone does not prove voice or SMS inclusion.
You need to port an existing number to Movistar
Use a Movistar service and sales center. The online QR process described for a new line is not the same as porting an existing line.
You are switching phones
Do not assume an eSIM profile can simply be copied. Follow the carrier’s transfer or reissue process and retain the original confirmation. Removing the profile before you have a replacement QR can leave you without service.
