The best starting point for mixed phone, laptop, and electronics work is a broad interchangeable-bit precision kit that includes the profiles and sizes your devices actually use. If you repeatedly repair one device family, a dedicated driver set for its recurring profile can be faster and simpler. There is no universal best set: the correct choice depends on the screw head, size, access angle, and whether you also need opening tools.
Before buying, identify the exact device model and consult its repair guide. A driver that looks close can damage the recess or fail to loosen the fastener. iFixit’s guidance is unambiguous: “Different screw heads call for different driver types.”
What a precision screwdriver set does
Precision sets are intended for the small fasteners found in phones, laptops, game consoles, cameras, and other compact electronics. Their value is control: a small handle and accurately formed bit let you engage a tiny screw without substituting a nearly matching tip.

A set can be supplied as one handle with interchangeable bits or as individual fixed-shaft drivers. An interchangeable kit stores many profiles in a compact case. Individual drivers put a frequently used profile in your hand immediately and can be preferable when you perform the same repair often.
Start with the screw, not the brand
Identify the profile
Look at the screw head in the device’s service manual or repair guide rather than guessing from memory. A profile name alone is not enough. The same profile family can require different sizes, and a bit that enters the recess but does not fill it can slip under torque. Record the profile and size for every screw group before ordering.

Use the smallest bit that fully fills the recess without rocking. iFixit’s screwdriver best-practices guide advises using the correct driver type and size; treat that as a selection rule, not an optional refinement. - The bit should sit fully at the bottom of the recess.

Check access and working space

Interchangeable kits require a deliberate selection step each time. Read the profile and size marking, seat the bit completely, and return it to the case after use. Their compact format is convenient, but a crowded bit assortment is useful only when the markings are clear and the storage keeps pieces organized.

Individual precision drivers make sense when your repair workload repeatedly calls for one profile, such as a specialty pentalobe or Y-type tip. How to select a set for your repair mix
- List the devices. Write down every model you expect to open, including generation or year where the manufacturer distinguishes versions.

Laptops
Laptop repairs can involve several screw groups in one chassis. Create a screw map as you remove each group and keep the bits matched to those groups. A broad kit is useful when your laptops span models with different profiles; a dedicated driver is efficient only when your recurring machines use the same profile and size.

Buying a conventional watchmaker set only
