Best one-device choice: the HP OfficeJet 250 is the strongest fit when you need printing, scanning, and copying away from a desk. Tom’s Guide identifies it as the only scan-and-copy model in its portable-printer test selection, but its 6.7-pound body and sheet-through scanner make it less compact than print-only machines. If you only need mobile printing, the Canon PIXMA TR160 or Epson WorkForce WF-110W is easier to carry; for monochrome full-page forms, Brother PocketJet 8 uses thermal media. The right choice depends first on whether scanning is essential.

Portable printer versus portable printer-scanner

“Portable printer” is not a synonym for “portable all-in-one.” The Epson WorkForce WF-110W is explicitly a single-function printer, and Canon’s PIXMA TR160 announcement describes a printer without a scanner. Neither can scan or copy documents by itself. A true one-device print/scan/copy setup needs an integrated scanner, such as the HP OfficeJet 250. The other practical route is to carry a print-only model and a separate mobile document scanner.

That distinction changes the buying decision more than headline size or price. An integrated unit is simpler at a counter or in a vehicle, while two specialized devices can be lighter individually and better suited to high-volume scanning. Before comparing models, decide whether you need color, full-page output, battery operation, automatic document feeding, or only occasional paper copies.

Best portable printer and scanner picks

Use case Best-supported route What you gain Main compromise
Print, scan, and copy from one device HP OfficeJet 250 Integrated inkjet printing, sheet-fed scanning, and copying Heavier and bulkier than print-only portables; scan path is not a flatbed
Portable color documents and occasional photos Canon PIXMA TR160 Light print-only design; optional rechargeable battery No scanner; battery is an additional component
Color printing with built-in rechargeable power Epson WorkForce WF-110W Wireless, battery-capable inkjet printing Print-only, with lower speeds when running on battery
Full-page monochrome forms in the field Brother PocketJet 8 Compact thermal printing without ink cartridges Monochrome output; resolution, connectivity, and media depend on SKU
Frequent scanning and occasional printing Dedicated mobile scanner plus a print-only portable printer Choose scanner ADF, battery, and wireless features independently Two devices, two charging and carrying requirements

HP OfficeJet 250: the best-supported all-in-one option

Choose the HP OfficeJet 250 when scanning and copying are requirements rather than occasional bonuses. Tom’s Guide lists it as its pick for most readers and the only model in its tested portable-printer list that combines printing, scanning, and copying. Its scan function uses a 10-page automatic document feeder (ADF): sheets travel through the machine instead of being placed on a glass platen. That design is useful for receipts, forms, and multi-page documents, but it is less forgiving for fragile photographs, thick originals, or pages that need precise edge alignment.

Tom’s Guide lists dimensions of 15 × 7.8 × 3.6 inches and a weight of 6.7 pounds for the model in its guide. Those figures explain the central trade-off: it is transportable, but it is not in the same class as a small print-only inkjet. The guide also notes scan-alignment issues and delicate-photo handling limitations. Treat those observations as the publisher’s reported assessment, not as a new hands-on test here. See the model’s listing in Tom’s Guide’s portable-printer guide.

Check the exact regional package before buying. Battery inclusion, current stock, warranty terms, and retailer bundles were not established consistently, so do not assume that every OfficeJet 250 listing includes the same power accessories. If the printer will live in a car or field kit, confirm the battery and charging arrangement rather than relying on a product title.

Print-only alternatives when scanning is not needed

Canon PIXMA TR160

The PIXMA TR160 is the better direction for color printing when a separate scanner is acceptable. Canon’s United States announcement dated March 28, 2025 lists a weight of 4.5 pounds. Its optional LK-72 battery is rated by Canon for approximately 330 pages per charge. That is a manufacturer estimate for the optional battery, not a guaranteed result under every page-coverage, wireless, or battery-age condition. The battery is separate, and the announcement does not describe an integrated scanner or copier. Read the announcement at Canon U.S.A..

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the TR160 when color documents or occasional photos matter and your scanning volume is low enough to handle with a phone or separate scanner. Do not select it expecting an all-in-one workflow: you will need another device for paper capture and copying.

Epson WorkForce WF-110W

Epson’s UK specification page identifies the WF-110W as an A4 portable, single-function inkjet printer. It rates ISO speed at 7 pages per minute (ppm) monochrome and 4 ppm color on AC power. On battery power, the listed rates fall to 4 ppm monochrome and 2 ppm color. Epson also specifies a maximum 20-sheet paper tray. These are manufacturer specifications for the UK model, not comparative laboratory results across regions. The printer does not scan or copy. Check the regional listing at Epson UK.

The WF-110W makes sense when you value a rechargeable, wireless color printer and normally have access to a scanner elsewhere. Its small paper capacity suits short jobs; carrying spare paper is sensible for forms or travel days.

Brother PocketJet 8

PocketJet 8 is a specialized thermal printer rather than a general-purpose color inkjet. Brother Mobile Solutions lists standard-resolution variants at 203 dpi and high-resolution variants at 300 dpi. Connectivity differs by specific SKU, so check the exact model number before ordering. Thermal output is monochrome and requires compatible thermal paper or media; it is well suited to full-page field forms, delivery records, service reports, and receipts where color and photo quality are irrelevant. Product details are on the Brother PocketJet 8 page.

Canon PIXMA TR160 Color Wireless Portable Printer
  • LIGHTWEIGHT AND PORTABLE - Connect and print on the go with the PIXMA TR160. This lightweight portable printer can fit into a bag or backpack with room to spare.
  • HIGH-QUALITY PRINTING ON THE GO - Print documents and photos up to 8.5” x 11” that showcase sharp black text and vibrant details with rich color thanks to a 5-Color Hybrid Ink System, including square and borderless prints.
  • SIMPLE & EASY CONNECTIVITY - Printing is only an app away when using the Canon PRINT app, Apple AirPrint4, or Mopria Print Service5 with your compatible device(s) or the cloud.
  • WIRELESS DIRECT MODE - Connect your compatible device to the printer even without a wireless router.
  • 1.44” OLED DISPLAY - Easily check ink levels, printer status, and other settings with the 1.44” Monochrome OLED.

Because PocketJet models and media options vary, match four items before purchase: paper size, resolution, connection type, and the operating system used by your phone, tablet, or laptop. A high-resolution SKU does not turn the device into a color printer or scanner.

When a separate mobile scanner is the better design

If scanning is frequent but printing is occasional, two purpose-built devices can be more practical than one heavy all-in-one. A dedicated scanner can offer a document feeder, battery operation, and wireless transfer while a print-only unit handles output. Epson’s mobile document-scanner category confirms that wireless, battery-operated, and ADF configurations exist, but it does not establish one universally best model. Choose a specific scanner only after matching your documents and workflow; see Epson’s mobile document scanner information.

Use this split setup when any of the following is true:

  • You scan many pages at a time and want a feeder designed primarily for capture.
  • You print only a few pages per week but need higher scanning convenience.
  • You need to keep the printer and scanner in different locations.
  • You can tolerate carrying and charging two devices in exchange for lower individual weights or more specialized features.

Evaluate the scanner’s ADF capacity, supported paper sizes, duplex capability if stated, battery runtime, wireless standards, app or driver support, and file formats. Then select a printer based on color needs, media, and expected monthly volume. Do not assume that a scanner category page’s existence proves a particular model meets your requirements.

Cost and ownership considerations

Portable equipment costs more than the device price alone suggests. The OfficeJet 250 may require a battery or a particular regional power accessory, while the TR160’s LK-72 battery is explicitly optional. A battery can be essential if you work away from outlets, so include it in the initial budget instead of comparing a bare printer with a complete kit.

Inkjet ownership also includes replacement cartridges, paper, and possible maintenance items. The TR160’s approximately 330-page battery figure does not describe ink yield, and the WF-110W’s 20-sheet tray may encourage frequent paper replenishment during a long assignment. PocketJet avoids ink cartridges but requires model-compatible thermal media; buying the wrong size or coating can make a field printer unusable. Availability and prices vary by country, so check ongoing supply costs before selecting a model for regular work.

For a two-device setup, add the scanner, its battery or charger, a printer, and the protective storage needed to keep both devices safe. This arrangement can still be economical when scanning is frequent because each component is optimized for its main job, but it is less convenient than one integrated unit. Compare the cost of a complete working kit over a year, not just the cheapest listing on the day you shop.

Capacity, speed, and workflow trade-offs

Published speed figures describe different operating conditions. Epson lists 7 ppm monochrome and 4 ppm color for the WF-110W on AC power, falling to 4 and 2 ppm on battery. If you have a deadline and no outlet, the battery figures are the relevant ones. The 20-sheet maximum tray is enough for a short form packet but not a large mailing run without supervision.

The OfficeJet 250’s 10-page ADF is useful for a small stack, yet it still requires you to reload for longer batches. Its sheet-through path also means originals must be straight and suitable for feeding. A separate mobile scanner may be preferable when your routine involves repeated multi-page capture, especially if you need a scanner’s particular feeder or wireless workflow. PocketJet’s full-page thermal focus favors immediate forms and records rather than color graphics or photo work.

Think in complete jobs: capture the original, save the file, print the required copy, and share or archive it. A printer that is fast in isolation may not save time if its app, connection, or paper handling interrupts that sequence.

How to choose the right portable setup

  1. Decide whether scanning is mandatory. If you must scan and copy without another device, start with the OfficeJet 250 class of all-in-one. If not, remove scanner requirements and compare the lighter print-only options.
  2. Choose color or monochrome. Color inkjet models fit color forms and occasional photos. PocketJet 8 is appropriate only when monochrome thermal documents meet the need.
  3. Measure the real carry load. Include the printer, battery, charger, spare paper, ink or thermal media, and protective case. A device’s bare weight can understate what you actually carry.
  4. Verify battery operation. Determine whether the battery is included, optional, or unavailable in your market. For the TR160, the LK-72 is optional; for the WF-110W, published speeds differ between AC and battery use.
  5. Match paper and document size. A4 and letter workflows are not interchangeable in every region. Confirm the tray and media supported by the exact model and SKU.
  6. Estimate job size. Small trays are fine for a few forms but inconvenient for a long packet. For scanning, consider how many pages you can feed before reloading the ADF.
  7. Check connectivity before deployment. Confirm Wi-Fi, USB, Bluetooth, or other connections on the exact model and ensure your phone, tablet, or laptop supports the required app or driver.
  8. Price the supplies, not just the device. Compare replacement ink, maintenance items, battery cost, paper, and thermal media availability in your country. A low purchase price can become expensive if supplies are difficult to obtain.
  9. Confirm the package and warranty locally. Retail bundles and regional specifications change. Verify what is in the box, return terms, and warranty coverage before relying on the printer for work.

Practical setup and operating guidance

For an integrated all-in-one

  1. Charge or connect the printer using the power arrangement supplied for your regional package.
  2. Install the manufacturer’s current mobile or desktop software and add the printer over the supported connection.
  3. Load a small batch of the correct paper and run an alignment or print-quality routine if the software requests one.
  4. For scanning, straighten pages and remove staples, clips, curled corners, and fragile originals. Feed one test page first because a sheet-through path does not provide the positioning control of a flatbed.
  5. Save a scan and print a copy before leaving for a job. This confirms paper orientation, connection, and battery status while you can still correct them.

For a print-only printer paired with a scanner

  1. Install and test the scanner and printer separately on every device that will be used in the field.
  2. Set a file destination and naming convention for scans so documents do not remain stranded in a phone app.
  3. Carry the correct power leads, spare paper, and any scanner-specific feed accessories together.
  4. Test the complete sequence—scan, save, print, and share—using a representative document rather than relying on separate component tests.

For a thermal PocketJet workflow

  1. Confirm that the selected PocketJet 8 SKU’s resolution and connectivity match the host device.
  2. Load the specified thermal media with the printable side oriented correctly.
  3. Print a short form before a full batch; thermal paper and page dimensions affect the result.
  4. Store unused media as recommended by the media supplier, since heat, light, and moisture can affect thermal output.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming every portable printer scans: check for an explicit scanner and copier function. The TR160 and WF-110W are print-only in the cited manufacturer material.
  • Expecting a flatbed scan from the OfficeJet 250: its reported 10-page ADF uses a sheet-through path. Handle photos and delicate originals carefully.
  • Treating battery-page figures as guarantees: Canon’s approximately 330-page number applies to the optional LK-72 battery under Canon’s stated conditions; actual yield varies.
  • Using AC speed figures while on battery: Epson lists lower battery-mode rates for the WF-110W. Plan for slower output away from an outlet.
  • Buying the wrong PocketJet variant: 203 dpi and 300 dpi models, as well as connectivity choices, are SKU-specific. Verify the exact part number and media.
  • Ignoring total carrying weight: the OfficeJet 250’s 6.7-pound listed weight excludes the practical extras you may pack, while a two-device kit adds its own chargers and supplies.
  • Relying on an old listing: batteries, bundles, stock, warranties, and regional prices change. Recheck the seller’s current package before purchase.

Which option should you buy?

Buy the HP OfficeJet 250 if a single portable machine must print, scan, and copy. Accept its larger footprint, 6.7-pound listed weight, and sheet-fed scan path as the cost of integration. Choose Canon’s PIXMA TR160 when portable color printing is the priority and you can scan elsewhere; include the optional-battery cost and do not count on a scanner that the cited announcement does not provide. Choose Epson’s WF-110W when you want a battery-capable color printer with a small paper tray and can accept print-only operation and slower battery speeds. Choose Brother PocketJet 8 only for monochrome thermal documents and after confirming the exact resolution, connection, and media.

For organizations or travelers who scan substantially more than they print, pair a mobile document scanner with a lightweight print-only model. That approach costs more coordination, but it lets you select the scanner’s feeder and wireless features independently instead of compromising around an all-in-one’s size.

Prices, inventory, battery bundles, supplies, and warranty coverage are market- and date-dependent. Verify those details for your country and the exact SKU before committing to a portable workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which portable printer can scan and copy?

The HP OfficeJet 250 is the leading one-device option in this comparison. Tom’s Guide lists it as the only scan-and-copy model in its portable-printer test selection. Its scanner is a 10-page sheet-through ADF rather than a flatbed, so fragile or thick originals require care.

Are the Canon PIXMA TR160 and Epson WF-110W scanners?

No. Canon’s PIXMA TR160 announcement describes a printer, and Epson identifies the WF-110W as a single-function printer. You need a phone, separate mobile scanner, or another all-in-one to capture documents.

How portable is the HP OfficeJet 250?

Tom’s Guide lists the model at 15 × 7.8 × 3.6 inches and 6.7 pounds. It can travel, but it is substantially heavier than the print-only alternatives. Add the battery, charger, paper, and case when estimating your real carry load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Canon TR160 include a battery?

Canon identifies the LK-72 as an optional battery. Canon’s March 28, 2025 U.S. announcement gives an approximate 330-page figure per charge for that battery. Confirm the retailer’s bundle and local availability before buying.

How fast is the Epson WF-110W on battery?

Epson UK lists 4 ppm monochrome and 2 ppm color on battery, compared with 7 ppm monochrome and 4 ppm color on AC power. These are manufacturer specifications for the UK model, not comparative test results.

What is the Brother PocketJet 8 best for?

It is best for full-page monochrome forms and records where thermal media is acceptable. Brother lists 203 dpi standard-resolution and 300 dpi high-resolution variants, with connectivity varying by SKU. Confirm the exact model, paper, and connection before purchase.

Should I buy a separate scanner and printer?

Consider that arrangement when scanning is frequent but printing is occasional, or when you need a scanner’s ADF, battery, or wireless features more than an integrated unit. The trade-off is carrying and charging two devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check before ordering a portable printer?

Verify the exact SKU, scanner function, paper size, battery inclusion, AC and battery performance, connectivity, operating-system support, tray or ADF capacity, consumable availability, warranty, and the complete retailer package. Regional specifications and bundles can differ.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: choose the HP OfficeJet 250 when printing, scanning, and copying must happen in one portable device. Choose Canon’s PIXMA TR160 or Epson’s WF-110W for print-only color work, and Brother PocketJet 8 for monochrome thermal forms. If scanning dominates your workload, a dedicated mobile scanner paired with a print-only printer may be the more capable, if less compact, solution.
