USB-C describes a connector, not a guaranteed video feature. A laptop may have a USB-C-shaped port that does not output display video. Lenovo’s M14 compatibility information specifies USB-C with DisplayPort 1.2 Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery 2.0; other monitors may have different requirements.

- Look up the exact laptop model’s port specifications or support documentation. Confirm that the port you plan to use supports video output, such as DisplayPort Alt Mode where required.
- Check the monitor’s required input and supported connection standard. Make sure the laptop output and monitor input are compatible.
- Verify the cable can carry video and is suitable for the connection. A USB-C cable that only supports charging or data may not work for display output.
- Check the monitor’s power requirements separately. Determine whether the laptop can supply power through the connection or whether the monitor needs an adapter or another power source.
If the laptop cannot send video through the monitor’s USB-C input, do not assume that a different USB-C cable will fix the limitation. Look for a connection method supported by both devices, and confirm any adapter’s video compatibility before ordering.
Choose a size that fits how you travel
Traditional portable monitors are generally around laptop-display size and intended to fit into a travel bag. A larger monitor can offer more workspace, but may be better for moving between rooms or work areas than for routine backpack carry. ASUS distinguishes travel-ready portable displays from larger movable monitors in its buying guide.

- For frequent travel: Compare the monitor’s dimensions and weight with your laptop, sleeve and bag. Screen diagonal alone does not tell you whether it will fit comfortably.
- For a fixed temporary desk: A larger panel may be worth the extra bulk if screen area matters more than daily carry.
- For tight workspaces or presentations: Check whether the display has a built-in kickstand, foldable support or tripod socket, and whether it can be positioned in the orientation you need.
Plan for power, not just the cable
Some portable displays can draw power from a laptop over USB-C, but that can affect the laptop’s battery life. When connecting to a phone, tablet, console or camera, the display may need an external power source. ASUS notes both USB-C power from a laptop and the possibility of external power with other devices in its portable monitor guide.
If you regularly work where there is no outlet, a model with a built-in battery may be more convenient. ASUS lists the ZenScreen Touch MB16AMTR with a 7,800 mAh battery and up to four hours of use; treat that as a manufacturer-stated figure, not a guaranteed runtime for every brightness level or setup. If the monitor has no battery, check whether your planned power bank or adapter meets its requirements.

Match the screen to your work
Text, spreadsheets and general work
Resolution and aspect ratio determine how much information fits on screen and how fine text can appear at a given size. For example, Lenovo lists the M14 as Full HD at 14 inches and the M14d as 2240 × 1400 at 14 inches with a 16:10 aspect ratio. These are specifications, not a guarantee of how comfortable either will look with your operating system’s scaling settings.
Gaming and fast motion
A higher refresh rate can be useful for gaming, but only if the laptop or console can output a compatible signal and the game can take advantage of it. ASUS lists 144 Hz and FreeSync Premium for the MB16AHG and MB17AHG. Check the source device’s supported output and the monitor’s connection requirements rather than treating the refresh-rate figure alone as a performance guarantee.

Panel type and stated color coverage can help narrow options. ASUS lists OLED and 100% DCI-P3 for the MQ16AHE; Lenovo lists 100% sRGB for the M14d. Coverage figures describe a manufacturer’s specification and do not establish independent color accuracy, calibration quality or suitability for a particular professional workflow.
Touch and shared viewing
Touch matters when you want to tap, draw or manipulate content directly on the external display; otherwise it may add little value. ASUS lists 10-point touch on the MB16AMTR. For showing content to another person, ASUS describes the foldable MQ149CD as supporting a mode where the screens face another viewer, as well as side-by-side use.
