RetroArch is the best PokeDaisy alternative for most Android players because one configurable frontend can cover Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and many other systems, with USB and Bluetooth controller support. Choose Pizza Boy when you want a dedicated handheld emulator with touch and layout customization. Choose My OldBoy! for Game Boy or Game Boy Color, and My Boy! for Game Boy Advance. Stay with PokeDaisy if its Pokémon-focused library, guides, Pokédex information, dual-screen presentation, rewind or RetroAchievements integration is the main reason you use it.
What PokeDaisy alternatives need to replace
PokeDaisy is a specialized Android player for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance family. Its official description specifically targets Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Yellow, Crystal and popular ROM hacks from every generation. It is not simply a general-purpose emulator: its game library, save-file handling, save states, resume and rewind tools sit alongside a companion interface, guides, Pokédex-style information and RetroAchievements.
That focus creates two different reasons to look elsewhere. You may want a broader frontend that also handles other consoles, cores, shaders and controller profiles. Or you may prefer a conventional, dedicated handheld emulator without Pokémon-specific companion features. The right replacement therefore depends on whether you are changing the Pokémon experience or only changing the emulator underneath it.

Quick comparison
| Option | Primary coverage | What it does best | Trade-off for a Pokémon player |
|---|---|---|---|
| PokeDaisy | Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance | Pokémon-oriented library, save management, resume, rewind, guides, Pokédex information, companion interface and RetroAchievements | It is specialized for dual-screen Android handhelds rather than a broad, multi-system frontend |
| RetroArch | Game Boy-family systems through selectable cores, plus many other systems | Core choice, customizable overlays, shaders, controller profiles and USB or Bluetooth peripherals | More setup: install the frontend, select a core and configure it |
| Pizza Boy Double Slice and the Pizza Boy family | Game Boy-family coverage varies by the exact edition | Dedicated Android play, full touch support, save states, custom layouts and colors | Confirm the exact Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance edition before choosing it for a particular Pokémon game |
| My OldBoy! | Game Boy and Game Boy Color | A focused, conventional emulator for classic GB and GBC libraries | It is not the GBA choice, and current compatibility with every modern ROM hack is not established |
| My Boy! | Game Boy Advance | A focused, conventional emulator for GBA libraries | It does not replace a GB/GBC emulator for Red or Crystal, and current ROM-hack compatibility should be checked individually |
Prices, store availability, update cadence, current app versions and exact ROM-hack support change over time. Check the current listing and documentation for the edition you intend to install rather than treating those details as permanent specifications.

RetroArch: the best choice for flexibility and multiple systems
RetroArch is the strongest alternative when Pokémon is only one part of your Android library. It is a free, open-source, cross-platform frontend rather than a single fixed emulator. You select a core for the system you want to play, then configure the frontend around it. That architecture lets you keep one library, one controller setup and one set of display preferences while changing the underlying emulator core.
Why Pokémon players choose it
- One frontend for several generations: You can use an appropriate Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance core instead of installing a separate app for each handheld.
- Controller flexibility: RetroArch supports USB and Bluetooth controller peripherals, which is useful when touch buttons are uncomfortable for a long RPG.
- Display control: Customizable overlays, shaders and layouts let you decide how the original screen is presented on a phone, tablet or Android handheld.
- Profiles and repeatability: Once a core and controller profile are configured, the same frontend can be used for other systems without changing apps.
What makes the setup harder
A dedicated emulator normally opens a game and starts playing. RetroArch adds a layer: install the frontend, obtain and select a compatible core, load the game and then adjust input or display settings. The exact labels can change between Android builds, so follow the current on-screen names rather than an old screenshot guide.
Practical setup sequence
- Install the current Android build of RetroArch from a source you trust.
- Open the core-management area and install or select a core that supports the system of the game you want to play: Game Boy for Red, Game Boy Color for Crystal, or Game Boy Advance for FireRed and Emerald.
- Use the load-content or library workflow to select the legally obtained game file.
- Open the input settings and map the built-in touchscreen overlay, a USB controller or a paired Bluetooth controller.
- Adjust the overlay, aspect presentation, shader and save-state behavior only after the game launches successfully. Changing several variables at once makes troubleshooting harder.
RetroArch is the best fit when the extra setup buys you something: several systems, multiple cores, display experimentation or a controller setup you want to reuse. It is less attractive if you only want to open one Pokémon game with minimal configuration.
Pizza Boy: a dedicated Android emulator path
Pizza Emulators presents Pizza Boy Double Slice as a fast Android dual-screen emulator with full touch support, save states, custom layouts and colors. The same family includes other native handheld emulators. That makes Pizza Boy the dedicated-emulator alternative to investigate when you want a focused interface instead of a multi-system frontend.

Where it fits
Pizza Boy is aimed at handheld play rather than a large, core-based system library. Touch support and custom layouts are useful on a phone, while an Android handheld can benefit from a layout that keeps the game screen and controls comfortable on its display. Save states provide a second way to pause progress in addition to the game’s own battery-backed save system.
Check the edition before loading a game
The Pizza Boy family is divided by handheld coverage. Confirm whether the listing you are considering handles Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance before using it for a specific Pokémon title. Pizza Boy Double Slice is described as a dual-screen Android emulator, but the available information does not establish one universal edition that covers every Pokémon release. Do not assume that an app named for one handheld will run a game from another.
Best use case
Choose Pizza Boy when you want a conventional dedicated emulator, customizable touch controls and a simpler mental model than “frontend plus core.” It is also a reasonable option for a player who wants a handheld-focused app but does not need PokeDaisy’s guides, Pokédex information or companion layer.
My OldBoy! and My Boy!: focused options for a single handheld family
These two apps are best understood as separate choices, not two versions of the same universal emulator. My OldBoy! is identified with Game Boy and Game Boy Color. My Boy! is identified with Game Boy Advance.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
My OldBoy! for Red, Blue, Yellow and Crystal-era play
Use My OldBoy! when your library is centered on the original monochrome Game Boy and Game Boy Color generations. Pokémon Red and Yellow belong to the Game Boy group, while Crystal is a Game Boy Color title. A focused emulator can be easier to reason about than a frontend with cores when those are the only systems you need.
My Boy! for FireRed, LeafGreen and the Hoenn games
Use My Boy! when the library is Game Boy Advance based. FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald are the relevant Pokémon releases in this group. It is not a replacement for a GB/GBC emulator, so it should not be your only installation if you also intend to play Red, Yellow or Crystal.
What is not established
Current prices, store availability, update schedules and compatibility with every modern ROM hack are not durable specifications for either app. Check the current listing and test the particular hack you intend to play. A mainline Pokémon cartridge image and a heavily modified hack can behave differently even when they target the same handheld.
Which emulator works with each Pokémon game?
| Game | Handheld system | Suitable choices | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Red | Game Boy | PokeDaisy; RetroArch with a Game Boy core; Pizza Boy edition that supports Game Boy; My OldBoy! | Use a GB-capable edition or core |
| Pokémon Yellow | Game Boy | PokeDaisy; RetroArch with a Game Boy core; Pizza Boy edition that supports Game Boy; My OldBoy! | Use a GB-capable edition or core |
| Pokémon Crystal | Game Boy Color | PokeDaisy; RetroArch with a Game Boy Color core; Pizza Boy edition that supports Game Boy Color; My OldBoy! | Use a GBC-capable edition or core |

| Pokémon Emerald | Game Boy Advance | PokeDaisy; RetroArch with a Game Boy Advance core; Pizza Boy edition that supports Game Boy Advance; My Boy! | Use a GBA-capable edition or core |
For a Pokémon ROM hack, the system target is only the first check. PokeDaisy describes support for popular ROM hacks from every generation. The available information does not establish that every alternative supports every hack, so test the exact file and keep a backup of your saves before switching applications.

How to move saves from PokeDaisy or another emulator
Save migration is practical, but it should be treated as a file-handling task rather than an automatic promise. PokeDaisy’s documentation says you can point it at another emulator’s save folder, including RetroArch’s, which makes side-by-side use and migration possible. The target application still has to recognize the same save format and the correct system.
- Finish the current session normally. Use the game’s own save command when possible, then close the emulator so the file is no longer being written.
- Create a dated backup. Copy the complete save folder to a separate location and label it with the game and date. Do this before changing paths or importing anything.
- Locate the source folder. In PokeDaisy, use the documented game or save-folder setting. In another emulator, identify the folder it currently uses rather than guessing from a similarly named directory.
- Point the new app to the source location or a copy. PokeDaisy can use another emulator’s save folder, and a separate emulator can be tested against a copied folder without putting the original at risk.
- Launch the same game in the target app. Confirm that it is the same system version and that the target recognizes the save. Load the file before making a new save.
- Verify the result in-game. Check the trainer, party and latest progress. If the save is missing or appears new, close the app and restore the backup rather than saving over it.
Save states are separate from the game’s normal save file and may not transfer cleanly between applications. Treat the in-game save as the portable record and regard save states as app-specific unless the target explicitly documents compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Touch controls, Bluetooth and USB gamepads
Every option can be used with on-screen controls, but long Pokémon sessions are often more comfortable with physical buttons. PokeDaisy’s development notes document gamepad and keyboard input. RetroArch’s Android feature summary specifically notes USB and Bluetooth controller peripherals. Pizza Boy emphasizes full touch support, making it a sensible choice when you prefer to stay on the touchscreen.
Using a Bluetooth Android game controller
- Pair the controller with Android before launching the game.
- Open the emulator’s input or controller settings and confirm that button presses are detected.
- Map the directional pad and face buttons to the emulator’s Game Boy controls.
- Assign start and select, then test every mapped button in a game that can be safely paused.
- Save the profile if the app offers profiles, and reconnect the controller before launching if Android has suspended the pairing.
A USB-C gamepad follows the same mapping logic, but Android may expose it only after the cable is connected. If a controller works in the system but not in the emulator, check the emulator’s selected input device and mapping rather than immediately changing the game file.

Common problems and the safest fixes
The game does not appear in the library
- Confirm that the app is pointed at the folder containing the game file.
- Use the app’s import, scan or open-content workflow again instead of assuming the library updated automatically.
- Check that the selected emulator or RetroArch core supports the game’s handheld system.
- For Pizza Boy, verify that the installed edition matches GB, GBC or GBA.
The game opens but the save is missing
- Stop immediately and preserve the dated backup.
- Check that the target is using the intended save folder and recognizes the same save format.
- Confirm that you opened the same game version, not a different file with a similar title.
- Do not create a new in-game save until the original has been recovered or copied safely.
The controller is connected but buttons do nothing
- Open the emulator’s input settings and look for the controller as an active device.
- Map buttons manually if automatic detection assigned the wrong layout.
- For Bluetooth, disconnect and pair again before restarting the emulator.
- For USB, reconnect the cable and check whether Android has granted the app access to the device.
A ROM hack behaves differently from a mainline game
Compatibility with one generation does not establish compatibility with every hack built for that generation. Keep the original save untouched, test the hack in the emulator you intend to use and switch cores or apps only after making a backup. PokeDaisy explicitly targets popular ROM hacks, while the available information does not establish equivalent coverage for RetroArch cores, Pizza Boy editions, My OldBoy! or My Boy! on every hack.
The display or touch layout feels wrong
- In RetroArch, adjust the overlay, screen presentation and shader settings after confirming that the correct core is running.
- In Pizza Boy, try a custom layout or color configuration rather than stretching the default controls.
- On a dual-screen Android handheld, compare the layout intended by the app with the physical orientation of the device before changing the game’s own settings.
Choosing the right alternative
Choose RetroArch if you want one configurable library
RetroArch is the decision for players who expect to add systems beyond Pokémon, change cores, use shaders or carry one USB or Bluetooth controller profile across games. Accept the longer initial setup in exchange for that flexibility.
Choose Pizza Boy if you want a dedicated touchscreen experience
Pizza Boy is the better direction when touch controls, custom layouts, colors and save states matter more than a universal frontend. Confirm the exact edition before installing it for a GB, GBC or GBA game.

My OldBoy! makes sense for Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles. My Boy! makes sense for Game Boy Advance titles. If your library spans Red through Emerald, using only one of them leaves part of that range uncovered.
Stay with PokeDaisy if its companion features are the point
Switching emulators will not reproduce PokeDaisy’s Pokémon-oriented library, guides, Pokédex information, dual-screen presentation, rewind workflow or RetroAchievements integration. If those features shape how you play, a general emulator may be a downgrade even when it runs the same game files.
Bottom line
For the broadest Android setup, install RetroArch and choose the appropriate Game Boy-family core. For a dedicated alternative, investigate the Pizza Boy edition that matches your game. Use My OldBoy! for GB/GBC and My Boy! for GBA when you want a conventional single-family emulator. Before any move, back up your in-game saves, verify the target system and test the controller or touch layout with one game before migrating the rest of your library.
