There is no single best pair of pliers for every job: the right choice depends on whether you need to grip, turn, cut, or reach into a tight space. Use the pictures and visual cues below to identify common types and match their jaw shape to the task.
What are pliers used for?
Pliers are hand tools for gripping, holding, bending, turning, or cutting, depending on their jaw design. A pair made to grip an object is not necessarily suitable for cutting wire, and cutters are not substitutes for gripping pliers. These are category descriptions, not a tested ranking of products.
To choose, check whether the work area is cramped or open, how wide the jaws need to open, whether the object is round or irregular, and whether you need to keep a firm hold without continuously squeezing. For a basic household selection, consider general slip-joint pliers, wider-opening groove-joint pliers, and long-nose pliers for detail work; add cutters or locking pliers if your tasks call for them.

Common types of pliers: pictures and identification
For an illustrated version of this guide, pair each type with a clearly labeled picture or diagram showing the tool from a consistent angle. Focus on the jaw shape and joint mechanism rather than a product logo: the visual cue is what helps identify the tool.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Slip-joint pliers
Look for: A pivot that can shift between two positions and relatively compact jaws. Use: General gripping, turning, and holding. The two-position joint gives some adjustment, but the opening range is more limited than on groove-joint pliers. See the MSC guide to plier types.
Tongue-and-groove (groove-joint) pliers
Look for: A sliding joint that engages in a series of grooves and adjustable jaws with a wider opening range. Use: Gripping larger or irregular objects, including pipes and fittings. They are also commonly called channel-lock pliers; Channellock is a brand name, not the generic name for the design. See the MSC guide to plier types.
Long-nose and needle-nose pliers
Look for: Long, narrow jaws tapering toward the tip. Needle-nose pliers are a slimmer, longer version of long-nose pliers. Use: Reaching small parts and wire in confined spaces; some models also have cutting jaws. For tiny pins or small parts, needle-nose pliers are often the better fit because their narrow tips can reach into tight areas. See the MSC guide to plier types.

Lineman’s pliers
Look for: Broad, heavy jaws with cutting edges near the pivot. Use: Gripping, bending, and cutting wire. This is a common electrical-trade tool shape, but ordinary pliers are not safe for energized work. Home Depot’s illustrated plier guide describes plier uses and selection.
Diagonal cutters
Look for: Short cutting edges set at an angle. Use: Cutting wire. Unlike general gripping pliers, diagonal cutters are shaped primarily to sever material. See the MSC guide to plier types.
End-cutting pliers and nippers
Look for: Cutting edges at the tips, often on a rounded head. Use: Flush cuts; depending on the design, they can also pull or pry small nails and tacks. See the MSC guide to plier types.

Locking pliers

Specialty designs have jaw shapes or mechanisms for narrow tasks, including snap rings, wire stripping, spring removal, crimping, and hose clamps. Identify the specific task before choosing one: the name and shape should match the operation you need to perform. See the MSC guide to plier types.
What is the difference between groove-joint pliers and slip-joint pliers?
The joint mechanism is the key visual difference. Slip-joint pliers move between two pivot positions; groove-joint pliers slide along a grooved track. The groove-joint mechanism provides a wider range of jaw openings, making that style more useful for larger or irregular objects. Slip-joint pliers are a compact general-purpose choice when that broader adjustment is unnecessary. MSC’s plier guide explains the distinction.

How to choose the right size and protect the workpiece
Home Depot’s guide, last updated September 7, 2023, says 8-to-12-inch pliers are useful for many jobs. It also notes that smaller pairs suit delicate work, while larger pairs provide more force but may damage lighter materials. Treat those figures as that retailer’s guidance, not a universal sizing standard. Choose a size that fits the object and gives you control rather than simply opting for the largest tool.
- For delicate parts or confined access, favor a smaller tool with narrow jaws.
- For larger or irregular objects, check that the jaws open wide enough and sit securely on the work.
- For polished pipe, Home Depot recommends placing a cloth between the tool and the surface to help protect the finish.
- When turning nuts, use a wrench when possible; pliers can slip or mark the fastener.
Home Depot’s illustrated guide includes examples of pliers in use and further selection advice: Types of Pliers.
Electrical work requires the right tool and precautions
Not all pliers are designed for electrical work. Home Depot advises checking that a tool is designed for the job and says handles should be insulated for protection from shock when used on or around wires. Insulated handles do not make every electrical task safe; do not work on energized wiring. Use appropriate procedures and qualified help for electrical work.

Where to see labeled examples
Manufacturer catalogs can help you compare recognizable examples of long-nose, groove-joint, diagonal, lineman’s, locking, and slip-joint pliers. Stanley’s catalog also lists mixed sets, while CHANNELLOCK’s catalog spans tongue-and-groove, cutting, linemen’s, locking, long-nose, slip-joint, and specialty categories. These catalogs establish examples and category labels, not a comparative quality ranking or permission to reproduce images. Check image-use rights before publishing catalog pictures.
A mixed pliers set can be a practical starting point if its contents match the jobs you expect to do. Sets differ, so confirm which types are included rather than assuming every set has the same selection. A useful search phrase is “pliers set.”
CHANNELLOCK states on its catalog page that it manufactures more than 75 types and sizes of pliers in the United States. That is the company’s own undated statement, not an independently verified market statistic. View CHANNELLOCK’s plier categories.
