If you are looking for Best picture settings for the TCL P8L for movies, sport and gaming, use separate starting points for each activity rather than one supposedly perfect table of numbers. Start films in FILMMAKER MODE (or Movie), use Sports or carefully adjusted Motion Clarity for live sport, and switch to Game/Game Master with low-latency features for gaming. Keep each mode’s contrast, color and black-level defaults unless you have measurement equipment and a specific calibration target.
TCL says available controls vary by signal, input, picture mode, model size, region and firmware. Treat the settings below as safe starting points rather than universal numbers for every P8L.
Quick starting points
| Use case | Picture mode | Motion and processing | Important checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movies and series | FILMMAKER MODE; use Movie if Filmmaker is unavailable | Motion Clarity off initially; disable dynamic enhancements for an accuracy-first image | Adjust screen brightness for room comfort, not Black Level; configure HDR while HDR is actually playing |
| Live sport | Sports, or compare Sports with Movie/Filmmaker | Enable only as much Motion Clarity as removes blur without artifacts or an artificial “soap-opera” look | Judge the result on pans, scrolling scores and fast players; controls differ by signal |
| Console or PC gaming | Game or Game Master/low-latency mode | Use VRR and ALLM when the TV and source support them; avoid interpolation as a default | For the UK configuration, HDMI 1 or 2 and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable are recommended for 4K 120/144Hz |
These are starting choices, not measured calibration values. TCL’s own Google TV guidance notes that an option can appear only when the matching signal is playing, and that settings may be stored separately for an input or picture mode.

Before changing anything
Identify your exact P8L variant
Screen size, country, firmware and input hardware matter. The UK P8L guide covers 55-, 65-, 75- and 85-inch televisions, while a Canadian 98-inch page describes a separate regional and size configuration. Do not copy a value from one size or region and assume it is correct for another. Manufacturer specifications and feature availability can change between variants.

Write down the complete model designation from the television’s information page, including the region suffix if one is shown. Check the firmware version before troubleshooting a missing option. A menu label such as Game Direct Sync, Game Accelerator or Motion Clarity may be presented differently after an update or on another regional interface.
Change settings with the relevant signal playing
Open the TV’s picture controls while the content you want to tune is on screen. SDR television, HDR10/HDR10+, and Dolby Vision can expose different controls and can remember separate values. A setting changed during SDR playback may not carry over to HDR. If your menu offers Apply All Picture Settings, choose whether the change should affect only the current input or all inputs; using the current input is safer while you are experimenting.
For example, start an actual HDR title in the streaming app before looking for HDR tone-mapping controls. Start a game at its intended resolution and refresh rate before judging Game mode. If you open the menu on a home screen or a different source, the TV may hide the control you are trying to find.

Keep a record and reset one change at a time
Take a photograph of the original values before making adjustments. Change one control, watch several minutes of representative content, and return to the prior value if the result is worse. A bright shop-style image is not automatically more accurate in a dark room, and a smoother image is not automatically better for every viewer.
Use varied test scenes rather than a single spectacular trailer: a dark movie scene, a face in daylight, a slow camera pan, a white sports uniform and a game interface with small text will reveal different problems. Give your eyes time to adapt before deciding that a small change is beneficial.
Best TCL P8L settings for movies
1. Choose FILMMAKER MODE or Movie
Select FILMMAKER MODE when it is available for the signal. TCL describes Filmmaker Mode as preserving the creator’s intended presentation where supported. If it is not offered, select Movie, which TCL positions as a cinema-oriented preset. These modes are sensible accuracy-first baselines without requiring a colorimeter.
Do not switch to a brighter preset simply because it looks more vivid in a shop or a sunlit showroom. In a controlled, darker room, the cinema-oriented mode usually gives you a more stable starting point. In a bright room, you can raise overall screen brightness later without changing the black-level relationship.
2. Leave the core image controls at the mode defaults
Keep Contrast, Color and Black Level at the chosen mode’s defaults unless you are performing a documented measurement-based calibration. TCL defines Contrast as the white level and Black Level as the darkness of black areas. Raising Black Level to brighten a dim room lifts the entire black floor and can make a film look gray. Instead, adjust the TV’s overall screen brightness or the room lighting for comfortable viewing.
If highlights appear harsh, first check whether the title is HDR and whether the room is dark enough for that format. Do not respond by randomly lowering several controls at once; that makes it difficult to tell whether the problem was the source, the format or the setting.
3. Start with Motion Clarity disabled
Motion Clarity adds motion compensation intended to reduce blur and judder. Film is normally presented at a lower frame rate, so interpolation can create halos, shimmering details or an overly smooth appearance. Turn it on only if you personally prefer that look, and use the smallest setting that solves a visible problem.

Compare a slow pan across a building or landscape with Motion Clarity off and on. Look at fine lines, hair and subtitles as objects move. If edges split, details flicker or the scene looks like live video, return to the lower setting or disable the feature.

Where the menu provides adaptive or dynamic contrast, color or tone enhancements, leave them off initially. Such processing can make a single scene look punchier while changing brightness or color from shot to shot. If you prefer the effect, treat it as a viewing preference rather than a universal accuracy improvement.
Dynamic Tone Mapping deserves separate attention because it affects HDR brightness mapping. Evaluate it only with HDR material, and remember that a choice that looks good on one mastering level or in one room may not suit another title. There is no reason to copy an HDR choice into Dolby Vision, where the television may expose different or locked controls.
5. Tune HDR and Dolby Vision separately
Play an HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision title before opening the picture menu. HDR controls may appear only during HDR playback; Dolby Vision can lock or simplify controls. Do not transfer an HDR10 tone-mapping adjustment into Dolby Vision. Check shadow detail, bright highlights and subtitles in the actual streaming app or disc player you use.
After changing a setting, stop and restart the title or try a second HDR source to confirm the behavior. Streaming apps, disc players and game consoles can send different formats, so a setting remembered for one input or mode may not be visible on another.
Best TCL P8L settings for live sport
Start with Sports, then compare
If the P8L offers Sports, select it first. TCL describes this preset as improving motion for sports and other fast-moving content. Compare it with Movie or Filmmaker while watching the same broadcast. Sports may look brighter or more processed, which can help in a daytime room but may be less natural at night.
Use a real broadcast rather than a still image to make the comparison. Watch a wide camera pan, a close-up of a player, the scoreboard and the crowd. A preset that looks impressive on a static menu can still produce distracting processing during movement.
Use Motion Clarity as a controlled trade-off
Watch a wide camera pan, a ball crossing the field and the scrolling scoreboard. If players smear or the pan judders, enable Motion Clarity and increase it only until the defect is acceptable. Reduce it again if you see doubled edges, broken lines, flickering grass or an artificial smoothness. A UK settings guide reports a 2–3 suggestion on a ten-step motion control for one instrumented 75-inch sample; that is not a universal P8L value and should not be copied blindly to another size, region or firmware.
Motion processing can also interact with the broadcast frame rate. A compressed stream or interlaced feed may show blocks, combing or broken edges that the TV cannot completely repair. If artifacts remain at every setting, compare another channel or source before assuming the panel is at fault.
Check the room and broadcast before blaming the TV
Low-quality streams, interlaced feeds and heavy broadcaster compression can produce artifacts that no picture preset can remove. Sports may also be mastered much brighter than films. Set screen brightness for the room, then judge motion with several sources rather than a single channel.

For a daytime match, a brighter room-appropriate image may be easier to follow; for a night match in a dark room, the same processing can look excessive. Keep the mode that makes players and lines easy to track without sacrificing stable color or introducing halos.
Best TCL P8L settings for gaming
1. Select Game or Game Master
Use Game or Game Master (the exact label varies) to reduce processing and input delay. TCL’s Game Direct Sync control is intended to reduce input lag for certain signals. Enable the low-latency option before evaluating controller response.
Make this change while the console or PC is actively outputting a game signal. If the TV is displaying a streaming app or its home screen, the gaming controls may be unavailable or may not represent the final latency behavior.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Turn on compatible VRR and ALLM
Enable Variable Refresh Rate when both the source and the specific P8L input support it. Enable Automatic Low Latency Mode if offered so a console or PC can request Game mode automatically. Menus and supported ranges depend on firmware, input and source; confirm the console’s video-information screen rather than assuming every HDMI port behaves identically.
VRR can help when frame rate fluctuates, but it cannot make a game render faster than the console or PC. Check the source’s output settings and the game’s own frame-rate options. If ALLM does not switch modes automatically, select Game manually and verify that other picture processing has not been re-enabled.
3. Use the correct high-refresh connection
The UK P8L guide recommends HDMI 1 or HDMI 2 for its high-refresh Game Accelerator feature and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K at 120Hz or 144Hz. The cable does not improve movie color and cannot create a frame rate that the console or PC does not output. If 4K 120Hz fails, test the cable, select the correct HDMI input, enable the source’s 120Hz option and check that the game supports it.
Connect the source directly to the television while troubleshooting rather than adding an unverified switch, receiver or adapter. Check the console or PC information panel after every change so you know whether the signal is actually 4K 120Hz, rather than relying on the game’s menu alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Understand the manufacturer’s refresh-rate claims
TCL UK advertises a 4K 144Hz signal path and a 288Hz mode when connected to a compatible 288Hz HDMI source. These are manufacturer specifications for qualifying regional and size variants, not a guarantee that every input, game, console or PC will operate at those rates. A compatible source, correct port, suitable cable and current firmware are all required.
Most consoles do not output 288Hz, so that mode is relevant only to a compatible HDMI source, typically a suitable PC configuration. Verify the exact specification for your regional P8L before buying hardware on the assumption that every size has the same feature.
5. Avoid motion interpolation for games
Do not use film-style motion smoothing as a default gaming enhancement. Interpolation can add delay and visual artifacts. Let the game and source control frame-rate features while the TV remains in its low-latency mode.

- Brightness: overall screen brightness. Use it to make the picture comfortable in your room.
- Contrast: the white level. Excessive values can clip bright detail.
- Black Level: darkness of black areas. Raising it to brighten the whole image can wash out shadows.
- Motion Clarity: motion compensation intended to reduce blur and judder; its artifacts and smoothness are preference-dependent.
- Dynamic Tone Mapping: HDR processing that changes how brightness is mapped. Evaluate it only with HDR content and do not assume the same choice applies to Dolby Vision.
- Game Direct Sync: a TCL control intended to reduce input lag for certain signals.
Availability and behavior can change with picture mode, content format, input, model and firmware. If a control is missing, switch to the matching signal and verify that the current mode permits it.
Accuracy, visibility, smoothness and response: choosing deliberately
| Decision | Option A | Option B | Choose A when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room visibility | Movie/Filmmaker defaults | Brighter adaptive or dynamic processing | You want a stable, creator-oriented image and can control room lighting |
| Motion | Motion Clarity off | Small user-selected amount | You prefer natural film cadence (A) or need clearer live-sport pans (B) |
| Gaming response | Game/Game Master and low latency | Non-game picture modes | You are playing interactively and value controller response |
| Compatibility | Settings verified for your size, region, firmware and input | Values copied from another P8L | Always choose the verified configuration; copied numbers are not dependable |
These choices are not mutually exclusive for every input. You can keep Movie for films, Sports for a sports input and Game for a console, then let the TV remember the appropriate mode. The goal is repeatable behavior, not forcing one compromise setting onto every source.

The picture looks too dark
Confirm whether the content is HDR or Dolby Vision and adjust while that format is playing. Increase overall screen brightness or improve room lighting. Do not raise Black Level as a shortcut, because it lifts shadow blacks.
Films look like video
Return to Filmmaker Mode or Movie and turn Motion Clarity off. Disable dynamic enhancements, then check a film with slow pans and fine texture.

Try Sports mode, then add a small amount of Motion Clarity. If artifacts appear, lower the setting. Test another broadcast to rule out stream compression or a poor source feed.
Game mode is unavailable or the image is delayed
Open the picture menu while the console or PC signal is active, select Game/Game Master, and enable Game Direct Sync or the available low-latency control. Check that the source is connected to a supported HDMI port and that ALLM is enabled on both devices.
4K 120Hz or 144Hz will not engage
For the UK configuration, try HDMI 1 or 2, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, enable the refresh rate in the console or PC, and verify that the source actually supports the selected resolution and rate. Regional P8L variants may have different port capabilities.
A setting keeps changing
Check whether the TV is switching between SDR, HDR and Dolby Vision, or between inputs with separate picture memories. Reapply the setting while the desired signal is active. Use Apply All Picture Settings only when you intentionally want the same change on every input; otherwise leave the current-input option selected.
When professional calibration is worth considering
Exact numeric calibration values are not established for every P8L size, region and current firmware. A colorimeter-based calibration can make sense when you need repeatable grayscale, gamma and color performance in a controlled room, but values from an online chart or another owner’s television are not a substitute for measuring your exact panel. Without equipment, the mode-based approach above is safer than chasing arbitrary numbers.

Calibration is especially relevant when several viewers need a consistent reference image or when the television is used for critical content work. It is not required for ordinary movie, sport or game viewing, and it will not compensate for a poor broadcast, unsupported HDMI source or an incorrect signal format.
Bottom line for each activity
- Movies: Filmmaker Mode, or Movie; keep core defaults; Motion Clarity off initially; tune brightness for the room; configure each HDR format independently.
- Sport: Sports mode or a comparison with Movie/Filmmaker; add only enough Motion Clarity to improve pans without artifacts; test more than one broadcast.
- Gaming: Game/Game Master; enable compatible VRR, ALLM and Game Direct Sync; use the supported high-refresh HDMI port and cable for 4K 120/144Hz; avoid interpolation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use the same settings for SDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision?
No. Configure each format while it is playing. TCL P8L controls can change by signal, and Dolby Vision may lock some options.
Is a Motion Clarity value of 2 or 3 the correct setting for every P8L?
No. A UK guide reported 2–3 for one measured 75-inch sample, but that figure is not universal across sizes, regions or firmware. Use it only as a comparison point and adjust by eye.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Which HDMI port should I use for 4K 120Hz gaming?
The UK guide recommends HDMI 1 or HDMI 2 for its high-refresh feature. Verify the ports on your regional model and use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
Why can’t I find a picture option mentioned online?
TCL says options vary by content, input, picture mode, model and firmware. Start playback of the relevant signal and reopen the picture menu.
Should I raise Black Level if a movie looks too dark?
No. Raising Black Level can wash out shadow blacks. Adjust overall screen brightness or the room lighting, and first confirm whether the title is HDR or Dolby Vision.
Can I use Sports mode for films?
You can, but it is designed for fast-moving content and may add brightness or processing. Movie or Filmmaker is the safer accuracy-oriented film starting point.
Will a Ultra High Speed HDMI cable make movies look better?
No. It is recommended for supported 4K 120Hz or 144Hz gaming connections. It does not improve movie color or create a refresh rate that the source cannot output.
Does the P8L always run at 144Hz or 288Hz?
No. TCL UK advertises a 4K 144Hz path and a 288Hz mode only with a compatible source, port, cable and qualifying regional or size variant. The source must actually output those rates.
Should I enable motion interpolation for gaming?
Not as a default. Interpolation can add latency and artifacts. Use Game/Game Master and low-latency controls, with VRR or ALLM where the TV and source support them.
The Bottom Line
Use Filmmaker Mode or Movie for films, Sports or restrained Motion Clarity for live sport, and Game/Game Master with compatible VRR, ALLM and low-latency features for gaming. Verify your exact P8L size, region, firmware, signal and HDMI port before copying any setting, because no single numeric recipe applies to every variant.
