Fairphone 5 has the longest explicit support guarantee in this comparison: at least eight years of software support and five major Android upgrades. Google’s Pixel 8 and later qualifying Pixel phones promise seven years covering Android releases, security updates and Feature Drops. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series also promises seven years, split into seven generations of operating-system upgrades and seven years of security updates. Apple has no single published term in its public security information, but its security logs show updates still reaching the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and first-generation iPhone SE in 2026.
The right choice depends on more than the headline number. Count security coverage separately from major-version upgrades, calculate the years remaining from the exact model’s original availability date, and check repairability, parts access, warranty and regional update timing before buying.
At a glance: the longest support commitments
| Phone family | Published support | What is included | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fairphone 5 | At least eight years | Five major Android upgrades plus software and security support | Longest explicit guarantee found; modular repair and spare parts are central to its long-life strategy |
| Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro | Seven years | Android operating-system updates, security updates and ongoing Feature Drops | One clearly documented, all-in-one Google promise beginning with the Pixel 8 generation |
| Samsung Galaxy S24 series | Seven years | Seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates | Matches Pixel’s headline duration while stating the OS-generation count explicitly |
| Apple iPhone family | No single fixed term published in the cited material | Dated security-release history for individual models | Strong observed longevity, but assess the exact iPhone model from Apple’s current security bulletins |
These are manufacturer commitments or observed release records, not a promise that every country receives an update on the same day. A carrier-branded or region-specific variant can follow a different schedule, so verify the model number sold where you live.
What “support” actually includes
A phone can remain safe to use after it stops receiving major interface changes. Treat support as three separate layers rather than one countdown.

Major operating-system upgrades
An OS upgrade moves the phone to a new Android or iOS generation. It can add system functions, change permissions and alter compatibility with apps. The number of major upgrades is therefore a measure of feature-version longevity, not the entire period during which the device receives fixes.
Security updates
Security patches address vulnerabilities in the operating system, drivers and bundled components. They may continue after major OS upgrades stop. When comparing two phones, ask for both the security end date and the number of major upgrades; a single “seven years” label can hide a different balance between the two.
Feature Drops and other interim releases
Google’s Pixel 8 commitment specifically includes ongoing Feature Drops as well as Android releases and security updates. These are periodic additions delivered between major Android versions. They extend functionality without being counted as a separate Android generation.
Fairphone 5: the longest explicit guarantee
Fairphone states that the Fairphone 5 is supported for at least eight years and will receive five major Android updates. That is the longest explicit support term in these published commitments. The guarantee covers software and security support; it does not mean eight new Android versions.
Why the distinction matters
Five major upgrades over an eight-year support window means several years may be covered mainly by security maintenance and smaller software releases. That is normal for long-life phones, and it can still be valuable if your priority is safe everyday use rather than obtaining every new interface feature.
Repairability as part of the calculation
Long software support only helps if the hardware can survive the same period. Fairphone documents modular repair, spare-parts availability and the ability to replace worn components as part of its longevity approach. A replaceable battery or other serviceable part can postpone a full phone replacement when capacity declines, although the cost and availability of each part still need to be checked for your region.

Fairphone’s newer support statement
Fairphone’s Gen. 6 product information promises support until at least 2033, with regular security patches, software updates and spare-parts availability, alongside a five-year warranty. That is a calendar-date commitment for that product page, whereas the Fairphone 5 statement is expressed as a minimum number of years. Confirm which generation you are buying before applying either promise.
Who should choose it
- Buy it when the longest stated support period and repair access matter more than maximizing the number of major Android-version jumps.
- It is particularly suitable when you expect to keep one device for many years and are prepared to service or replace parts rather than upgrade on a short cycle.
- Check local stock, network compatibility, replacement-part availability and warranty terms; those practical details determine whether the guarantee is useful in your market.
Google Pixel 8 family: a seven-year all-in-one policy
In 2023, Google said the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro would receive seven years of software support, including the latest Android operating system, security updates and ongoing Feature Drops. The policy also covers later qualifying Pixel models, but eligibility is model-specific rather than a blanket promise for every Pixel ever made.
What makes the policy easy to compare
Google places the operating-system, security and Feature Drop elements in one statement. You do not have to infer whether the headline period refers only to security patches or also to Android releases. That clarity makes the Pixel 8 family straightforward to compare with other long-support flagships.
How to evaluate a Pixel 8 purchase today
- Identify whether the listing is a Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro and record its original market availability date.
- Confirm that the exact regional model is covered by Google’s seven-year policy.
- Subtract the elapsed time since availability from the seven-year window to estimate remaining support.
- Check Google’s current update information for the security-patch level and the most recent Feature Drop available in your country.
- Compare the remaining term with the price of the handset. A heavily discounted older unit may offer less support time than a newer phone at a similar cost.
Trade-offs
Because Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 have comparable headline durations, purchase decisions can reasonably turn to camera preferences, performance, repair options, battery service and price. Those factors are separate from the support promise and should be evaluated for the exact configuration you can buy.
Samsung Galaxy S24 series: seven OS generations plus seven years of security
Samsung says the Galaxy S24 series receives seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. The statement distinguishes the two quantities: seven major Android-generation changes are promised, while security maintenance extends for the seven-year period.

A generation count is not the same as a date on the calendar. The support clock starts with the model’s availability, and an S24 bought well after launch has fewer years left than a new S24 bought near release. Use the original availability date for the exact device, not the date you found it on sale.

Regional and carrier checks
Samsung updates can be staged by country, carrier and model number. Before purchase, check the support page for your market and make sure the listing is not an imported variant with different certification or update timing. A promise at the product-family level does not remove those distribution differences.
When S24 is the practical choice
The S24 is a sensible mainstream option when you want a clearly stated long OS-upgrade runway and do not need the repair-focused design emphasized by Fairphone. Compare warranty service, battery replacement routes and the remaining support period of the specific retail unit before deciding.
Apple iPhones: long observed support, no single fixed-year promise
Apple does not publish one universal support-duration number in its public security documentation. Instead, its security-release log shows which models receive particular updates. On 26 January 2026, Apple listed iOS 15.8.6 for the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and first-generation iPhone SE. On 11 May 2026, the same device family appeared for iOS 15.8.8.

- Find the exact iPhone model and generation, including whether it is the original SE or a later SE.
- Open Apple’s latest security-release entry and search the affected-model list.
- Record the date and version of the newest update that names your model.
- Repeat the check when buying used or older stock; historical support is evidence of longevity, not a contractual end date.
The 2026 entries demonstrate that some older iPhones can receive security maintenance many years after release. They do not establish a guaranteed number of future years for every iPhone, so do not convert the example into a universal Apple policy.
How to calculate the support you have left
Manufacturers normally start a support window at a phone’s launch or market availability. The remaining term is therefore:
remaining support = promised support window − time elapsed since the exact model became available in your market.

For example, if a phone with a seven-year policy became available three years ago, the theoretical maximum remaining window is about four years. The exact result depends on the manufacturer’s stated start date, regional release and whether the policy uses launch, first sale or another reference point.

Information to record before buying
- Exact model name, storage version and model number.
- Country or region in which the phone will be activated.
- Original availability or launch date used by the manufacturer.
- Separate end dates for major OS upgrades and security updates, if published.
- Whether the seller’s stock is new, refurbished or previously activated.
Do not use the date of a retailer’s discount as the start of the support clock. Older inventory can be cheaper while leaving materially less time for updates.
Update delivery is not the same as update entitlement
A long guarantee tells you that updates are intended to continue; it does not ensure identical delivery timing everywhere. Carrier testing, regional certification and staged rollouts can delay an update. Imported models may also use a different schedule from the version sold by an authorized local channel.
Questions to ask the seller or manufacturer
- Is this the regional model supported by the local update channel?
- Are security patches delivered monthly, quarterly or on another cadence for this model?
- Does the stated term include both OS upgrades and security fixes?
- What happens if a carrier or regulatory approval delays a release?
Google, Samsung and Fairphone’s published policy statements establish the duration and coverage for the Pixel 8, Galaxy S24 and Fairphone 5 policies, but they do not establish a common patch cadence for all three. Check the current bulletin for the phone and region you intend to use.

After several years, battery capacity, charging ports, screens and seals can become the limiting factors. A phone may still be eligible for updates but no longer be economical to repair. Conversely, a well-maintained device can remain useful after its final feature update if it continues to run required apps and is protected by the latest available security patch.

Choosing by priority
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why | Check before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Longest explicit term | Fairphone 5 | At least eight years of software support | Five major upgrades versus the longer security-support window; local parts and network compatibility |
| Clear mainstream Android policy | Pixel 8 family | One statement covers Android, security and Feature Drops | Exact model, regional eligibility and remaining years from availability |
| Many defined Android generations | Galaxy S24 series | Seven OS generations are stated separately from seven security years | Carrier or region-specific timing and remaining term on discounted stock |
| Preference for iOS | Exact iPhone model supported by current Apple bulletins | Apple has a demonstrated history of security updates for older devices | Use the dated security log; do not assume a fixed universal number of years |
Common buying mistakes
Mistaking the longest number for the most upgrades
Fairphone 5’s eight-year support period includes five major Android upgrades. If frequent feature-version changes matter more than the total maintenance period, compare the OS-upgrade count directly.
Ignoring the model’s age
A seven-year policy does not give every buyer seven years from the day of purchase. A phone launched years earlier has already used part of that allowance.
Assuming every regional variant is identical
Update timing and availability can vary by country, carrier and model number. Imported stock may not follow the schedule advertised for the domestic version.

Planning around an unverified end date
Apple’s dated releases show observed support for specific devices, not a promise for all future iPhones. For any brand, rely on the published policy for the exact model and keep a copy of the latest security bulletin.
Overlooking the battery and parts
Software support cannot restore a worn battery or a damaged port. Include likely service costs, parts access and warranty coverage in the ownership period you are planning.
A practical purchase workflow
- Shortlist by support policy. Start with Fairphone 5 for the longest explicit term, Pixel 8 for Google’s combined seven-year policy, Galaxy S24 for its seven OS generations plus security term, or an iPhone whose current bulletin still names your model.
- Verify the exact SKU. Write down model number, storage tier, carrier status and region before comparing prices.
- Calculate remaining time. Use the manufacturer’s availability date and separate OS and security end points.
- Check current update status. Confirm the latest security patch and whether the newest OS or Feature Drop is available for your region.
- Assess physical serviceability. Look for battery replacement, parts supply, repair channels and warranty length.
- Recheck the economics. Compare the purchase price with the number of supported years left, not with the original launch price.
Verdict
Choose Fairphone 5 when the longest explicit software guarantee and repair-oriented ownership are your main goals. Choose between Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 when you want a mainstream Android phone with a clearly documented seven-year policy; compare the remaining term, price, hardware and service options for the exact unit. Choose an iPhone by checking Apple’s security-release history for that model rather than relying on an assumed fixed support period. Whichever phone you buy, treat security coverage, major OS upgrades, regional delivery and repairability as separate parts of the longevity decision.
