For still photos in very dim light, the Google Pixel 10 Pro has the strongest direct evidence in this shortlist: in one TechRadar comparison at about 1.09 lux, the reviewer preferred its detail, color and white balance to the iPhone 17 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. That is a result from one scene, not a universal ranking. For video, larger-screen options, or newer hardware, the other picks may suit you better; the available evidence does not put all five through the same night test.

Which phones are worth considering for night photography?

This shortlist separates direct low-light test evidence from manufacturer claims and broader camera-guide recommendations. The distinction matters: only the Pixel 10 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro and Galaxy S25 Ultra appear together in the cited still-photo comparison.

Phone Why it is on the list Evidence and best fit
Google Pixel 10 Pro Strongest result in the available direct low-light still-photo comparison. TechRadar’s single-scene test favored its detail, color and white balance. A broader Digital Camera World guide also describes Pixel 10 Pro photography as a strength and notes RAW capture and pro controls.
Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Newer camera hardware and Samsung’s Nightography positioning. Samsung says it has a 200MP wide camera and a 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical and 10x optical-quality zoom. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent comparative night-test results.
Apple iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max A relevant option if video is a priority. Digital Camera World names the Pro models its best phone for video, but the sources do not establish a specific night-video head-to-head winner. In TechRadar’s one still-photo scene, the iPhone result was brighter but less convincing in detail and color than the Pixel sample.
Google Pixel 10 Pro XL A larger Pixel 10 Pro variant for shoppers considering a larger phone. It is included in Digital Camera World’s broader camera-phone discussion, but it was not part of TechRadar’s described three-phone low-light scene comparison. The evidence here does not establish a separate night-performance result for the XL.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra A tested comparison point for buyers considering a prior-generation Ultra model. It appears in the same TechRadar low-light still-photo scene as the Pixel 10 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro. The reviewer found its detail weaker than the Pixel’s in that sample; this does not establish performance across scenes or software updates.

What did the direct night-photo comparison find?

TechRadar describes photographing a scene first with the lights on and then with them off, leaving about 50 times less available light. A meter read approximately 1.09 lux for the dark captures. This was a single scene and a still-photo comparison, not a broad test across people, concerts, moving subjects, video or astrophotography.

  • Pixel 10 Pro: The reviewer manually selected Night Sight. Its capture took three seconds and looked darker, but the reviewer preferred its detail retention, color and white balance to the iPhone 17 Pro and Galaxy S25 Ultra in this scene.
  • iPhone 17 Pro: The reported five-second shutter brightened the scene, but the reviewer considered detail recovery middling and noted a magenta cast that affected color accuracy.
  • Galaxy S25 Ultra: The reviewer judged its detail weaker than the Pixel’s in this sample.

The reviewer also made a tripod-enabled Pixel exposure lasting 2 minutes 19 seconds, but excluded it from the comparison. That exposure should not be treated as equivalent to the three phones’ ordinary captures or as evidence that a handheld night snapshot will deliver the same result. Read TechRadar’s account of the comparison.

Which pick fits your kind of night photography?

For low-light still photos

The Pixel 10 Pro is the most defensible choice here if your priority is still-photo detail and color in very dim conditions: it has the shortlist’s clearest independent comparative result. It did not win every possible night scenario; the available comparison covers one stationary scene and does not settle how it handles movement, video or long-distance zoom.

For night video

Digital Camera World identifies the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max as its video-focused picks. That is a broader editorial recommendation, not a reported night-video shootout against the other phones in this list. Samsung describes Nightography video processing on the S26 Ultra, including sensor-specific noise reduction and improved light gathering, but those are Samsung’s claims rather than independently verified comparative results. See Digital Camera World’s camera-phone guide.

For zoom and newer Samsung hardware

Samsung lists a 200MP wide camera and a 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and 10x optical-quality zoom for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, alongside wider apertures. These specifications may matter when framing distant subjects, but they do not by themselves prove better results in dim light. Samsung’s descriptions of its low-light processing should be read as manufacturer information until independent comparisons establish how it performs against alternatives. See Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra Nightography announcement.

For a larger Pixel

The Pixel 10 Pro XL is a reasonable shortlist candidate if you want the larger member of the Pixel family, but the evidence cited here does not show that it matches or exceeds the Pixel 10 Pro in a direct night test. Do not infer a separate camera ranking from its inclusion in a general camera-phone guide.

For an established comparison point

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is useful as a direct comparison point because it appeared alongside the Pixel 10 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro in the same test. Its result in that one scene was less detailed than the Pixel sample according to the reviewer; this is not a verdict on every night mode or later software version.

Why night mode can brighten a photo but still blur it

Night mode cannot create light where there is none. A phone can gather more light through longer captures or combine several frames, but a moving person, a shaking hand or a shifting scene can make those frames harder to align cleanly. Google explains that Night Sight adapts capture to phone stability and scene movement: a still scene can receive longer light-gathering capture, while movement can prompt shorter exposures to limit blur. It also describes merging multiple darker, sharper frames. This can improve a dim photo, but it is not a guarantee of freezing action.

Google says Night Sight may activate automatically in low-light Photo or Portrait mode. The manual switch in TechRadar’s Pixel test shows why it is worth checking the camera screen rather than assuming a particular mode has engaged in every situation. Google explains how Night Sight works.

How to get better night photos with any of these phones

For people, streets and indoor scenes

  • Hold the phone steady while the camera completes its capture; longer light gathering makes camera movement more consequential.
  • Watch for subject movement. A longer night capture may brighten a still scene but can leave moving people blurred.
  • Check whether the camera has enabled its night mode automatically. If the result is too dark, look for the phone’s night-photo mode rather than assuming the default camera setting is already using it.
  • For concerts or other moving scenes, prioritize a moment when the subject is relatively still; computational night modes cannot guarantee sharp action.

For stars and night skies

  1. Move away from city lights and other artificial light sources.
  2. Set the phone on a steady surface or tripod, then frame the sky.
  3. Keep the phone still until the exposure finishes; do not pick it up mid-capture.
  4. Google advises going out at least 45–90 minutes after sunset for star photos.

A small tripod or stable phone stand is optional for astrophotography, but a steady support is especially useful when the phone needs a long exposure. Google’s guidance emphasizes getting away from light pollution and keeping the device motionless through capture. Read Google’s astrophotography guidance.

What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you

The available evidence supports a practical shortlist, not a five-way winner. TechRadar’s direct comparison is limited to one low-light still-photo scene with three models. Digital Camera World provides broader buying-guide judgments, including a video-oriented pick, rather than comparable night results for all five. Samsung’s S26 Ultra information is manufacturer-authored. None of these sources establishes a universal best phone for night snapshots, concerts, moving subjects, video and star photography at once.

Samsung Newsroom UK also reports figures from research commissioned by Samsung in Britain in 2026: 96% of surveyed Brits said they had given up trying to take photos at night because their device was not up to the job; 62% said they felt frustrated with after-dark picture quality; 36% said phone camera quality was the biggest barrier to taking night photos more often; and 40% said they had been unable to capture a meaningful moment because their phone did not perform in low light. These are company-commissioned UK findings, and the cited passage does not provide full survey methodology, so they should not be read as independent or worldwide estimates. Samsung executive Annika Bizon framed the company’s position this way: “Life’s best moments don’t wait for perfect lighting. Whether it’s a sunset on holiday, your favourite band playing your song, or a packed dancefloor at a wedding, these are memories people want to relive clearly – not through blur and grain. Brits shouldn’t have to miss out simply because it’s dark.” Samsung’s UK announcement includes the figures and statement.
