For most people, buy the Backbone One (2nd Generation) in the connector version that matches your phone. It is compact, plugs into the phone’s native USB-C or Lightning port, supports passthrough charging and has a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The Razer Kishi V2 is the best direct-wired alternative, while the GameSir G8 Galileo is the most comfortable choice for long Android sessions. If you use a USB-C iPhone or iPad mini and want full-size controls, choose the GameSir G8+ MFi.
Your phone’s connector, case thickness, operating system and preferred games matter more than brand loyalty. The controller must physically fit, and the game or streaming app must accept a gamepad.
Quick comparison: which phone controller should you buy?
| Controller | Best for | Phone connection and compatibility | Notable features | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Backbone One (2nd Generation) | Most people and portable everyday use | USB-C or Lightning versions; works with compatible iPhone and Android games and services | Passthrough charging, 3.5 mm headphone jack, compact controls, companion app | Smaller grips and controls than full-size gamepads |
| Razer Kishi V2 | Direct wired play and Android touch remapping | USB-C or Lightning versions; model and phone connector must match | Low-latency wired connection, passthrough charging, tactile buttons, Android touch remapping through Razer Nexus | Touch remapping is Android-only and game rules still apply |
| GameSir G8 Galileo | Long Android gaming sessions | Officially Android-only | Full-size grips, Hall-effect sticks and triggers, two programmable rear buttons, passthrough charging, 3.5 mm audio | Wide and less portable; do not assume official iPhone support |
| GameSir G8+ MFi | Full-size controls for USB-C iPhone, iPad mini and Android | MFi-certified; USB-C iPhone, iPad mini 6 and newer, and Android 8.0 or later | Hall-effect controls, improved case clearance, iOS and Android app support | Full-size deck takes more bag space; list price was $79.99 / £79.99 / AU$129.99 on TechRadar’s 2026 review page |
Prices, stock, retailer deals and supported cloud-game catalogs change by country and date. The GameSir G8+ MFi figure above is a list price reported at review time, not a guaranteed current street price.
Start with the connector: USB-C or Lightning
A phone controller that plugs into the handset is not universal. Newer iPhones use USB-C; older iPhones use Lightning. Android phones generally use USB-C, but the phone still needs an operating system and physical layout supported by the controller.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
USB-C phones
Choose a USB-C edition for Android phones and USB-C iPhones. The GameSir G8+ MFi also supports iPad mini 6 and newer models and Android 8.0 or later. Check the controller’s supported-device list for your exact handset, especially if the USB-C port is offset, the phone is unusually thick or the camera module interferes with the bridge.
Lightning iPhones
Choose the Lightning edition of the Backbone One or Razer Kishi V2 for older iPhones. A USB-C controller cannot be made compatible with a Lightning phone by using a passive adapter: the controller’s bridge, software identification and power behavior are designed around a particular connector.
Why wired connection is usually preferable
Backbone One, Kishi V2 and the wired G8 models draw their data connection directly through the phone port. That avoids Bluetooth pairing and generally keeps input delay consistent. It also means the phone’s port must remain accessible and the controller cannot be used with a phone whose connector is blocked by a thick case.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBackbone One (2nd Generation): the easiest all-round choice
The Backbone One (2nd Generation) is the safest recommendation when you want a pocketable controller that works with the largest range of controller-compatible mobile and streaming apps. Backbone offers separate USB-C and Lightning versions, so order the SKU that matches your phone rather than relying on an adapter.
What it does well
- Fast setup: extend the controller, seat the phone and connect through the native port.
- Power while playing: passthrough charging lets you connect a charger to the controller while the phone is installed.
- Wired audio: the built-in 3.5 mm jack is useful when you want headphones without Bluetooth.
- Broad app coverage: Backbone documents support for controller-compatible App Store and Google Play games, plus compatible cloud and remote-play services. Its examples include Apple Arcade, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and streaming from an Xbox, PlayStation or PC.
- Travel size: its slim, light design takes less space than a full-size telescoping controller.
Where it is less suitable
The compact layout has less palm support and smaller controls than the GameSir G8 models. If you regularly play games with large analog movements for several hours, the G8 Galileo or G8+ MFi may reduce hand fatigue at the cost of portability. Backbone’s app can organize supported games and services, but it cannot make a game accept a controller when the game itself has no gamepad support.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Razer Kishi V2: the best direct-wired alternative
The Kishi V2 is a strong choice if you prioritize a rigid phone fit, tactile buttons and a direct wired connection. Razer sells USB-C and Lightning models. Its extendable bridge is designed to hold modern smartphones securely, but you still need to verify your phone and case against the model’s clearance.
Reasons to choose it
- Low-latency wired input: the controller communicates through the phone port instead of Bluetooth.
- Passthrough charging: you can charge the phone through the controller while playing.
- Tactile controls: the face buttons and directional controls have a more clicky, deliberate feel than many compact pads.
- Android touch remapping: Razer Nexus can map controller inputs to on-screen touch controls on Android. This is not an iOS feature, and games can restrict or prohibit remapping.
Important limitation of touch mapping
Touch remapping is an input workaround, not native controller support. It may fail after a game update, behave differently across screen layouts or violate a game’s rules. Prefer a game’s built-in gamepad mode whenever available, and check the game’s terms before using mapped controls in competitive play.
GameSir G8 Galileo: the comfort pick for Android
The original GameSir G8 Galileo is officially Android-only. That qualification matters: do not buy it expecting official iPhone compatibility based on unofficial demonstrations or adapter experiments.
Why its larger body helps
- Full-size grips: the handles give your palms more support than compact telescoping designs.
- Hall-effect sticks and triggers: these use magnetic sensing rather than conventional physical contact for position detection, a feature valued for smooth control and resistance to traditional potentiometer wear.
- Two programmable rear buttons: assign frequently used actions without removing your thumbs from the sticks, where the supported game and software permit it.
- Passthrough charging and 3.5 mm audio: keep the phone powered and use wired headphones during a session.
Trade-offs
The wide deck is less convenient in a small bag, and a phone with a bulky case may not seat correctly. It is the better ergonomic choice for a desk, sofa or long trip when comfort matters more than minimum size.
GameSir G8+ MFi: full-size controls for USB-C Apple devices
The G8+ MFi targets people who want the G8 shape but use a USB-C iPhone, an iPad mini 6 or newer, or a supported Android phone. TechRadar reported MFi certification, iOS and Android app support, Hall-effect controls and improved case clearance. Its list price on the 2026 review page was $79.99, £79.99 or AU$129.99.

Do not confuse it with the Bluetooth G8 Plus
Tom’s Guide lists a Bluetooth GameSir G8 Plus separately and notes that model without passthrough charging or a headphone jack. That information should not be transferred automatically to the wired G8+ MFi. Check the name, connection method and ports on the exact package you are buying.
Comfort versus portability: choose the shape you will actually carry
| Priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small bag or pocket | Backbone One (2nd Generation) | Its compact, slim layout is easier to carry. |
| Long sessions and large hands | GameSir G8 Galileo or G8+ MFi | Full-size grips provide more palm support and wider spacing. |
| Balanced portability with tactile buttons | Razer Kishi V2 | Its bridge and controls stay compact while retaining a firm wired fit. |
Dimensions and comfort depend on the phone installed, case, hand size and game. A larger controller can feel better at home but become the item you leave behind when traveling.
Will your phone case fit?
Case clearance is one of the most common reasons a controller purchase fails. A case can prevent the connector from reaching the port, stop the phone from sitting flat or collide with the telescoping bridge and camera bump.
Before you buy
- Identify the phone’s exact model and connector: USB-C or Lightning.
- Measure or check the case’s thickness, including raised lips around the screen and camera.
- Read the controller maker’s current compatibility and clearance notes for that phone.
- Look for whether the connector has enough movement to align with a port that is not centered.
- If the manufacturer does not explicitly confirm your case, plan to remove it during play or choose a model with documented improved clearance, such as the G8+ MFi.
Symptoms of a fit problem
- The phone rocks instead of sitting securely.
- The controller connects intermittently when you move your hands.
- The USB-C or Lightning plug does not fully enter the phone.
- The case presses against the controller and disconnects the phone when the bridge is extended.
Never force the connector into place. Remove the case, inspect for debris and reseat the phone gently. Repeated pressure can damage the phone port or controller plug.

Game and cloud-service support
A controller changes the physical input method; it does not add gamepad support to every app. Native support depends on the game, operating system and service. Backbone lists compatible App Store and Google Play games and services such as Xbox, PlayStation, Steam and cloud gaming. Razer documents Android touch remapping as an exception for games that expose usable touch controls.
Native controller support
Use the game’s settings or store listing to confirm controller support. Native support normally gives the best button prompts, analog behavior and account safety because the game receives standard controller events.
Remote play and cloud gaming
Remote-play apps stream a console or PC session to the phone, so the host device, network and streaming service must also support the controller path. A controller can be recognized by the phone while the remote session still rejects input because of the service or host configuration.
Touch-controlled games
On Android, Kishi V2 touch remapping can place virtual taps or swipes behind physical buttons where allowed. This is game-specific and may need to be recreated after an update. There is no equivalent iOS touch-remapping claim in the supplied Kishi documentation.
How to set up a wired phone controller
- Update the phone: install pending iOS or Android updates and restart if the controller app requires it.
- Install the companion app only when useful: Backbone’s app helps launch supported services; Razer Nexus provides Kishi configuration and Android touch remapping; GameSir’s app supports the G8+ MFi on iOS and Android.
- Remove a case if clearance is uncertain.
- Open the controller bridge, place the phone with its screen facing the controls and align the connector with the phone port.
- Seat the phone without force. The plug should enter straight and the handset should be supported by both sides.
- Launch a game known to support controllers and test both sticks, triggers, face buttons and the menu button.
- Connect a charger through the controller if you need passthrough charging, then confirm the phone displays its charging indicator.
- Connect headphones to the controller’s 3.5 mm jack when your model includes one.
Troubleshooting: when the controller is not detected
The phone does not respond at all
- Confirm the connector edition matches the phone: USB-C versus Lightning.
- Remove the case and reconnect the phone straight into the port.
- Inspect the phone port for lint or moisture; do not insert metal objects.
- Restart the phone, then reconnect before opening the game.
- Test a second controller-compatible game to determine whether the issue is app-specific.
Buttons work in the menu but not in the game
The game may lack native controller support. Check its input settings and documentation. On Android, use Kishi touch remapping only if the game’s rules permit it and understand that an update can change the mapped screen coordinates.

Charging passthrough fails
Use a known-good charger and cable, reconnect the phone, and test with the case removed. Passthrough charging is documented for Backbone One, Kishi V2, G8 Galileo and the wired G8+ MFi; do not assume it exists on the Bluetooth G8 Plus.
Audio is missing
Confirm that your controller model has a 3.5 mm jack. Backbone One and G8 Galileo include one. Tom’s Guide’s Bluetooth G8 Plus listing does not include a headphone jack, so use the phone’s or headset’s supported wireless audio path instead.
Which controller is best for common use cases?
“I want the simplest handheld-like experience.”
Choose the Backbone One (2nd Generation) in the correct connector version. It offers the least friction, passthrough charging and wired headphones in a small package.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“I play Android games that only have touch controls.”
Choose the Razer Kishi V2 if you understand the limits of Android-only touch remapping and the game’s rules allow it. For games with native support, the G8 Galileo may be more comfortable.
“My hands hurt during long sessions.”
Choose the GameSir G8 Galileo for an officially supported Android phone, or the G8+ MFi for a supported USB-C iPhone, iPad mini or Android device. Their full-size grips are the reason to accept the extra bulk.
“I use a USB-C iPhone and want a large controller.”
Choose the GameSir G8+ MFi, then verify the phone model and case clearance. The original G8 Galileo is officially Android-only.

Choose the Backbone One. A full-size G8 model may be more comfortable, but its wider body uses more bag space.

Buying checklist
- Match USB-C or Lightning to the phone.
- Confirm the operating-system requirement, especially Android-only versus MFi support.
- Check your exact phone and case clearance.
- Decide whether compact portability or full-size comfort matters more.
- Confirm passthrough charging and 3.5 mm audio on the exact model, not a similarly named Bluetooth version.
- Verify that your main games or streaming services accept controllers.
- Recheck current regional pricing, stock and app availability before checkout.
Bottom line
The Backbone One (2nd Generation) is the best phone controller for most players because it combines broad app compatibility, easy wired setup, passthrough charging and a headphone jack in a portable design. Pick the Razer Kishi V2 when tactile controls, a rigid wired fit or Android touch remapping are more important. Pick the GameSir G8 Galileo for maximum Android comfort, or the G8+ MFi for full-size controls on supported USB-C Apple devices and Android phones. The right connector and a confirmed case fit are non-negotiable; no controller can compensate for a mismatched port or a game that does not accept gamepad input.
