There is no verified one-size-fits-all Phasmophobia preset for clear audio and smooth performance. The official notes explain some lighting and audio behavior, but do not provide a complete current PC settings list or setting-by-setting FPS benchmarks. Start with the options below, change one thing at a time, and judge the result on your own system.
Which settings matter most?
The clearest documented graphics trade-off is Screen Space Global Illumination (SSGI): Kinetic Games says it can make lighting and shadows look less dark, but may affect performance. The developer offers three quality levels; it has not published measured FPS differences between them. Eye Adaption is described as simulating how eyes adjust when moving between bright and dark areas.
In the January 9, 2024 v0.9.4.0 update, Kinetic Games also increased ambient light and changed the brightness slider to a 0%-250% range. That is the range of the control, not a recommended value. The developer noted that larger rooms and rooms with darker materials may still be intentionally darker. Read the v0.9.4.0 update notes.

How should you tune graphics for visibility and performance?
Adjust SSGI before sacrificing useful visibility
If performance feels poor, lower SSGI quality or turn it off if that option is available in your version, then compare the result with the previous setting. This is a general troubleshooting method, not a developer-tested preset: the official notes identify a possible performance cost but give no FPS measurements or recommended quality level.

Set brightness for usable contrast
Choose a brightness level that lets you navigate comfortably without washing out the contrast that makes dark rooms dark. Treat this as a personal adjustment, not a tested numeric recommendation; the documented 0%-250% range does not identify a best point.
Change one visual option at a time
- Pick a repeatable situation in which you notice stutter or visibility problems, such as moving through the same area under similar lighting.
- Change one graphics option, beginning with SSGI quality, and revisit that situation.
- Keep the change only if the improvement in smoothness is worth any loss of lighting detail or visibility. Otherwise, restore it and test another option.
This process helps isolate what matters on your hardware; it is not a Phasmophobia benchmark. Kinetic Games’ optimization notes describe broad work on cameras, shadows, weather, UI, physics, audio, reflections, and texture and shader memory, but do not report reproducible FPS gains for individual settings. Check the game’s Steam news and update notes because patches can change behavior.

How does Phasmophobia’s audio help identify a sound’s floor?
Kinetic Games documents vertical-position effects that alter sounds according to their distance from the player’s floor: a sound one floor above is bass-boosted and muffled; one floor below is more muffled and quiet; and sounds two floors away receive stronger effects and volume reduction. These changes are part of how the game presents vertical audio cues, so boosting every volume indiscriminately is not a documented solution for clearer location cues. Sony’s PlayStation product page lists individual volume controls, mono audio, and 3D audio. It describes mono as sending the same audio to each speaker, while 3D audio lets players hear sounds from around them. What should you check if voice chat is unclear?
Confirm that the game and your operating system are using the input and output devices you intend to use, then check the current platform support instructions if voice chat still does not work. Kinetic Games has previously noted virtual audio-device compatibility with voice chat, but an older Steam Deck voice-recognition issue was tied to a particular release and should not be assumed to describe current behavior. Consult current game updates.

No. The available official documentation does not establish identical settings across platforms. In June 2026, Kinetic Games’ roadmap described a Unity 6 move planned for October, with stability updates and a new lighting system; that statement alone does not confirm the move shipped or explain its effects. Neither the documented graphics notes nor the historical optimization notes provide current recommended PC presets, benchmark hardware, or measured FPS changes by setting. Avoid treating any specific frame-rate target or configuration as officially verified.
