The safest default is deny by default, least privilege, and enforcement outside the model. Give an agent only the read access, tools, directories, domains, and time window needed for its current task. Run it in a disposable sandbox with a separate short-lived identity, keep write and destructive capabilities in separate tools, and require human approval for deletion, publishing, financial, credential, administrative, and external-communication actions.
A permission prompt is only a review signal. The real boundary must be an execution proxy or policy service that independently checks every requested operation before it runs.
What the safest permission model looks like
Autonomous agents can plan, call tools, execute code, read data, and continue toward a goal with limited supervision. That combination creates the risk OWASP describes as excessive agency: too much functionality, too many permissions, or too much autonomy. The possible results include disclosure of confidential information, unauthorized changes, deleted data, service outages, and actions taken in the wrong account.

- Start with no capability. Grant an operation only when the task requires it.
- Scope every grant. Bind it to a specific resource set, operation, initiating user, agent identity, and time window.
- Separate observation from change. Read-only tools should be the default; write, delete, publish, payment, credential, and administrative functions should be separate.
- Contain execution. Use a dev container, disposable virtual machine, or operating-system sandbox with only the required mounts and outbound connections.
- Make approval meaningful. A person should approve high-impact actions after seeing the exact target, parameters, and resulting effect.
- Expire and review access. Remove grants when the task ends, times out, is cancelled, or the identity changes, and retain decision logs for review.
There is no universal number of “safe” permissions. The correct set depends on the task and the sensitivity of its resources; a permission is justified only when its benefit is necessary and its blast radius is understood.
Baseline settings to apply before an agent runs
| Control | Safe starting setting | When an exception is justified | Required safeguard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tool and API authorization | Deny every tool and endpoint by default. | Only when the task cannot be completed without a named operation. | External policy decision point validates identity, operation, resource, scope, and approval state. |
| Filesystem | Read-only access to an allowlist of project paths. | A narrowly defined write path is needed to produce an artifact. | Mount only that path; exclude home folders, SSH keys, cloud credentials, and production mounts. |
| Shell and code execution | Sandboxed, non-root execution with CPU, memory, process, and time limits. | Additional packages, commands, or privileges are required by the build. | Approve each exception and record the command, identity, and result. |
| Network | Outbound traffic denied. | The task needs a documented service, repository, or API. | Allowlist exact domains and ports; block all other egress and inspect requests where appropriate. |
| Credentials | No secrets in prompts, environment files, mounts, or logs. | A task needs authenticated access to a named service. | Use a separate, short-lived, task-bound identity; split read and write credentials. |
| High-impact operations | Unavailable to autonomous execution. | A human explicitly approves a specific action. | Show immutable parameters immediately before execution and revalidate them independently. |
| Delegation | Subagents inherit a reduced permission set. | A child task has a clearly defined, narrower resource need. | Never let a model broaden a child agent’s privileges. |
| Lifecycle and audit | Automatic expiry at completion, timeout, cancellation, or identity change. | An operator renews access for a new, documented task. | Log grants, denials, approvals, tool calls, targets, and revocations. |
Put authorization outside the model
An agent can propose an action, but its text output must not be the authority that executes it. Route every tool call through a backend policy decision point or execution proxy. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet states that the agent may propose an action while a policy service or execution component independently validates scope, privilege, and approval state.
What the policy check must evaluate
- Initiating principal: Which human or approved workflow started the task?
- Agent identity: Which short-lived service identity is making the request?
- Tool and operation: Is this a read, create, update, delete, publish, payment, credential, or administrative operation?
- Target resource: Does the requested file, record, account, repository, or endpoint belong to the allowlist?
- Scope and time: Is the grant still valid for this task and within its expiry window?
- Approval state: If the operation is high impact, has a person approved these exact parameters?
A safe execution sequence
- The model emits a structured tool request, not an unrestricted shell command.
- The proxy authenticates the agent identity and associates it with the initiating human and task.
- The proxy normalizes the operation and target, preventing path tricks, aliases, or hidden parameters from bypassing policy.
- The policy engine evaluates the allowlist, expiry, resource sensitivity, and approval requirement.
- The proxy denies, pauses for approval, or executes through the sandbox. The model cannot skip this step.
- The decision and outcome are written to an audit log before the next action is accepted.
Prompt instructions such as “do not delete files” are useful behavioral guidance but are not a security boundary. A manipulated model can misinterpret them, and an allowed tool can still be abused. Independent authorization, isolation, egress controls, and revocation limit the damage when that happens.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose filesystem permissions that contain mistakes
Start read-only
For analysis, search, summarization, and diagnosis, mount only the required project or data directories as read-only. Do not expose a user’s home directory, browser profile, SSH keys, cloud credential files, password stores, local agent sockets, or production volumes. A read-only mount prevents accidental edits but does not prevent disclosure, so sensitive files should be excluded entirely when they are not needed.
Add a dedicated output area for writing
When an agent must create reports, patches, or build artifacts, provide a separate writable directory rather than making the source tree writable. Review or test the output before copying it into a protected repository. Keep deletion unavailable even inside the output area unless the workflow specifically requires cleanup and a person approves it.
Protect path boundaries
Canonicalize paths before authorization and reject traversal, symbolic-link escapes, device files, and mounts that resolve outside the allowlist. The policy should authorize the normalized target, not the path string supplied by the model. If a task needs one file, grant that file rather than its parent directory.
Constrain shell and code execution
Run commands in a container, disposable VM, or operating-system sandbox without root privileges. Apply CPU, memory, process-count, disk, and wall-clock limits so a runaway loop or fork bomb cannot consume the host. Keep package installation, compiler toolchains, and interpreters disabled unless the task requires them.

Handle exceptional commands explicitly
Package installation, access to a network repository, use of a host socket, kernel-sensitive operations, and commands outside the approved working directory should pause for approval. Approve the concrete command and arguments, not a broad category such as “run anything needed.” After approval, execute it in the sandbox and capture the command, dependency source, exit status, and files changed.
Separate build from deployment
An agent that can compile or test code does not need deployment credentials. Keep deployment, infrastructure changes, database migrations, and service restarts in a separate role or workflow. The build agent can produce a signed artifact for a human-controlled release process rather than contacting production directly.
Control network egress
Set outbound traffic to deny by default. If the task needs a package registry, source repository, documentation service, or API, allowlist the exact domains and ports required for that task. Do not treat a domain allowlist as permission to send every local file: combine egress rules with request-level controls and data minimization.
Reduce exfiltration paths
- Block direct access to cloud metadata services, internal administration interfaces, loopback services, and private network ranges unless explicitly required.
- Use a proxy that records destination, method, identity, and byte counts.
- Prevent DNS rebinding and alternate IP access from bypassing hostname rules.
- Do not place secrets in URLs, command-line arguments, or headers visible to model transcripts.
- Use separate read and write service endpoints where the provider supports them.
If no external connection is needed, keep the sandbox offline. Offline execution is often safer than trying to infer whether a model might discover an unexpected network path.
Use short-lived, separate identities
Create a service identity specifically for the agent rather than reusing a developer, administrator, or production account. Bind each decision to the initiating human, agent, tool, operation, and target resource. Credentials should be issued just for the task and should expire automatically when the task completes, times out, or is cancelled.
Split read and write authority
Use one identity or role for inspection and another for changes. A reporting agent can read a database replica without possessing credentials that can update the primary. A coding agent can fetch dependencies and write to a temporary branch without receiving a release key. This separation makes accidental escalation and post-compromise rotation more manageable.
Keep secrets out of the agent’s context
Inject credentials only at the execution boundary, where a proxy can select the correct secret for an approved call. Never paste long-lived tokens into prompts, environment files mounted into the workspace, source code, or logs. Redact authorization headers, cookies, private keys, and personal data from tool output before it is returned to the model.

Require human approval for irreversible or externally visible actions
Pause execution before deletion, publication, financial transfers, credential changes, administrative changes, production writes, or messages sent outside the organization. The approval screen should show the actor, target, exact parameters, affected records or files, and a plain-language description of the consequence. “Approve all future actions” is not equivalent to approving one operation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Revalidate immediately before execution
Approval can become stale if the target changes, the task identity expires, or the agent modifies its plan. Recheck the resource, parameters, policy version, and approval token at the moment of execution. If any value differs, require a new approval.
Design for safe refusal
An agent should be able to return a blocked action with a reason and the minimum information a person needs to decide. Do not pressure the operator with repeated prompts or hide dangerous parameters in collapsed details. A denied request should not cause the agent to search for an equivalent unapproved tool.
Limit delegated and subagent permissions
Delegation can multiply the blast radius. A child agent should receive only the subset of the parent task’s permissions needed for its assigned step, with an equal or earlier expiry. It must not inherit unrelated credentials, network access, writable mounts, or approval authority.
Keep delegation metadata in the audit record: parent identity, child identity, purpose, inherited scopes, and revocation relationship. If the parent is cancelled or its grant expires, revoke descendants as well. A model’s request to “give the subagent access” is not evidence that broader access is necessary.
Build expiry, revocation, and review into the lifecycle
Expiry events
Revoke grants at normal task completion, timeout, cancellation, user logout, identity change, sandbox destruction, or policy-version change. Do not rely on an operator remembering to clean up a temporary role. Destroy disposable environments after collecting the approved artifacts and logs.
Audit what happened
Record policy decisions, denials, approvals, tool name and version, normalized target, identity, timestamp, sandbox identifier, and outcome. Log enough context to reconstruct why an action was allowed without storing secrets or unnecessary personal data. Alert on repeated denials, attempts to reach blocked domains, path-boundary violations, unusual volume, and requests to expand scope.

Review grants
Owners should periodically examine active roles, allowlists, service accounts, and delegated scopes. Remove permissions that no longer support an assigned task. NIST SP 800-171r3 requires allowing only authorized access necessary for assigned organizational tasks and reviewing or removing privileges as needed; treat that as an ongoing control, not a one-time setup.
Permission profiles for common agent jobs
| Agent job | Initial capabilities | Capabilities kept separate | Approval points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document or data analyst | Read-only access to selected records and files; offline processing where possible. | Exports, deletion, external sharing, and database writes. | Any export containing sensitive data or any external delivery. |
| Software analysis and coding | Read source, run tests in a disposable sandbox, write to a temporary output or branch. | Production mounts, release keys, deployment, and repository administration. | Dependency installation, network access, merge, release, and destructive commands. |
| Research and retrieval | Allowlisted web or API reads through a proxy; no local secrets. | Posting, account changes, purchases, and unrestricted browsing. | Submitting forms, sending messages, or downloading executable content. |
| Operations assistant | Read dashboards and generate proposed changes. | Infrastructure mutation, credential rotation, service restart, and incident closure. | Every production change, restart, or access-policy modification. |
These are starting profiles, not universal templates. Remove any capability the particular task does not need and narrow resource scope further whenever possible.

- Describe the task in operational terms. List the files, records, services, tools, outputs, and maximum duration required; identify actions that would be irreversible or externally visible.
- Create a task identity. Associate a short-lived service account with the human requester and assign no permissions initially.
- Define allowlists. Specify exact operations and normalized resources. Keep read, write, delete, administration, and communication operations distinct.
- Prepare the sandbox. Use a disposable container or VM, run without root, mount only approved paths, and apply resource limits.
- Set network policy. Deny egress, then add only the exact domains and ports required. Keep the environment offline if possible.
- Connect the policy proxy. Require every tool and API call to pass identity, scope, target, expiry, and approval checks outside the model.
- Configure approval gates. Pause before destructive, financial, credential, administrative, production, or external-communication actions. Display exact parameters.
- Test denial paths. Attempt an unapproved file read, path escape, package install, blocked domain, expired token, and destructive call. Confirm each is denied and logged.
- Run the task and monitor. Watch for unusual requests, repeated denials, unexpected data volume, and scope-expansion attempts.
- Close and revoke. Collect approved outputs, destroy the sandbox, revoke credentials and grants, and review the decision log.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Giving a general-purpose administrator token
Why it fails: One compromised prompt or tool can reach unrelated systems and make irreversible changes.
Correction: Create task-specific identities, split read and write roles, and expose narrow operations through a proxy.
Making the whole workspace writable
Why it fails: A harmless edit can become a deleted repository, modified configuration, or replaced dependency.
Correction: Keep source mounts read-only and provide a separate writable output area with no delete or deployment authority.
Recommended Free Tools
Relying on permission prompts alone
Why it fails: A user may approve a misleading explanation, and the allowed tool may still be broader than intended.

Correction: Enforce policy independently, show exact parameters, and revalidate immediately before execution.
Allowing unrestricted network access “temporarily”
Why it fails: The agent can discover internal services or transmit data to an untrusted destination.
Correction: Use deny-by-default egress and an exact domain-and-port allowlist that expires with the task.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Leaving grants active after completion
Why it fails: A stale token or running sandbox becomes a later entry point.
Correction: Automate revocation on completion, timeout, cancellation, identity change, and sandbox teardown.
Granting a child agent more access than its parent task needs
Why it fails: Delegation multiplies identities and creates an escalation path.
Correction: Pass only a reduced scope, preserve the same approval requirements, and cascade revocation.
How to evaluate an agent platform or configuration
When comparing products or internal designs, score the controls rather than the model’s promises. Verify whether the system provides:
- Precise deny-by-default policies and resource allowlists.
- Enforcement outside the model through a policy service or execution proxy.
- Filesystem, process, and network isolation with disposable runtimes.
- Separate read and write tools and identities.
- Approval controls for irreversible and externally visible actions.
- Short-lived credentials, automatic expiry, and immediate revocation.
- Auditable decisions, policy review, and useful denial telemetry.
- Reduced permissions for delegated agents and connected tool protocols.
Ask for a demonstration of blocked path traversal, blocked egress, expired credentials, and a changed parameter after approval. A configuration that cannot prove those denials is not enforcing least privilege, regardless of how detailed its prompt instructions appear.
What to remember
Give an autonomous agent the smallest read-only capability that can complete its current task, in a disposable and offline-by-default environment. Expand access one operation at a time through an external policy layer, use short-lived separate identities, and keep all destructive or externally visible actions behind explicit, parameter-specific human approval. Expiry, logging, review, and revocation are part of the permission setting—not cleanup after it.
