Start with Hades if you want the smoothest introduction to permadeath. Its permanent progression, story that advances between attempts, adjustable difficulty and always-available God Mode make failure useful instead of purely punitive. Choose Rogue Legacy 2 when carrying upgrades forward is your main priority, or Dead Cells when you want demanding 2D combat and exploration to be the teacher.
What “permadeath with persistent upgrades” means
In a permadeath game, a failed attempt ends the current run. You return to the beginning, lose the temporary equipment or currency gathered during that attempt, and must build a new route. The important distinction for beginners is what survives. A game with persistent upgrades lets some progress remain after death, so the next attempt is not identical to the previous one.
Traditional roguelikes generally reset almost everything when a character dies. A rogue-lite keeps selected progress, such as improved statistics, unlocked weapons, abilities or new routes. The labels are not used consistently by every developer or platform, so the practical question is more useful than the genre argument: what can I keep, and does keeping it make the next run meaningfully easier or broader?

Quick comparison
| Game | Best beginner reason | What survives a death | How the game helps struggling players | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hades | Failure advances both the character story and mechanical progression. | Permanent upgrades, story progress and access to God Mode. | God Mode increases damage resistance after each death; the game also includes difficulty modifiers. | Most first-time players and anyone who wants narrative motivation. |
| Rogue Legacy 2 | Persistent upgrades are the central attraction rather than a side system. | Family manor growth, new heirs and permanent heirloom abilities. | An extensive level-up system and options to progress quickly or cautiously. | Players who enjoy building power across generations. |
| Dead Cells | Clear, demanding combat rewards observation and repetition. | Permanent unlocks and access to additional routes after deaths. | It does not offer the same explicit safety net; improvement comes from learning enemy patterns and routes. | Action-focused players who want a 2D challenge. |
All three are suitable examples of rogue-lites or permadeath-inspired games, but they teach the genre differently. Hades cushions early failures, Rogue Legacy 2 turns failure into family development, and Dead Cells expects you to convert each defeat into better combat decisions.
1. Hades: the best first permadeath game for most beginners
Hades is the broadest recommendation because it makes a failed escape attempt productive in several ways at once. Supergiant Games says one of its foremost design goals was to open the thrills of rogue-like games to more players. That intention shows in the combination of permanent progression, adjustable difficulty and a story that continues when a run ends.
Why failure feels useful
A death in Hades does not simply erase the session. You return to the game’s hub, can apply permanent progression, and receive more character-driven Greek-myth storytelling. The narrative gives you a reason to begin another attempt even when your combat performance has not improved yet. This is especially valuable for beginners who need several runs to learn movement, enemy timing and room priorities.
God Mode is an actual beginner safety net
God Mode is always available rather than being a one-time easy setting. It increases your resistance to damage, and that resistance increases a little more each time you die. You can therefore turn it on when a particular encounter is blocking progress, continue learning the game, and still keep the normal progression loop. The system changes how punishing mistakes are without removing the need to understand the combat.

Permanent and temporary progress
Hades combines run-only choices with upgrades that remain between attempts. Temporary weapons, boons, currency and other run bonuses help you survive that escape attempt; permanent progression changes later attempts. Keeping those categories separate prevents a common beginner mistake: judging a run as wasted because its temporary build disappeared. In Hades, the permanent layer and the continuing story are the intended reward for experimenting.
Who should choose Hades
- Choose it if you have little or no experience with roguelites and want explicit assistance.
- Choose it if a character-driven story will motivate you to repeat failed attempts.
- Choose it if you want to adjust the challenge instead of abandoning a run-based game altogether.
- Choose another game first if you specifically want a slower, inheritance-focused progression system or a combat-first 2D challenge.
2. Rogue Legacy 2: the best choice when upgrades are the point
Cellar Door Games describes Rogue Legacy 2 as a “genealogical rogue-LITE.” Each failed attempt feeds a continuing family legacy: you select a new heir, develop a growing manor and unlock permanent abilities. The structure makes the connection between death and future power unusually visible.
How the family progression works
Your current heir is temporary, but the family and manor are persistent. Upgrading the manor improves the foundation for later generations, while new heirs change the way a run plays. Permanent heirloom abilities add another layer of long-term development. The result is a game where a failed character is not merely replaced; that character becomes part of the route toward a stronger future heir.

Rogue Legacy 2 varies classes, traits, weapons and biomes. A new heir can therefore change your priorities before you enter a run, while the manor and inherited abilities preserve the sense that the overall campaign is moving forward. This is a good fit for players who enjoy adapting to a new character instead of repeating one fixed build.

Choosing a pace that matches your tolerance
The game presents a “go hard and fast” or “take it slow and steady” approach. That flexibility matters because persistent upgrades can support two different beginner preferences. You can push into harder areas and accept more frequent deaths, or spend time building power before taking on a demanding biome. The choice is about pacing rather than a separate promise of an easy mode.
Who should choose Rogue Legacy 2
- Choose it when the phrase “each death helps the next character” is the main reason you are interested in the genre.
- Choose it if managing a long-term upgrade system sounds more appealing than following a tightly authored story.
- Choose it if you want classes, traits, weapons and biomes to create substantial variation between heirs.
- Choose Hades instead if you want the clearest explicit damage assistance or a story that advances after almost every attempt.
3. Dead Cells: the best combat-first option
Dead Cells is for players who want permadeath to sharpen their 2D action skills. Motion Twin describes it as requiring mastery of “souls-lite combat” while an ever-present threat of permadeath remains. The game has no checkpoints, uses pattern-based encounters and offers nonlinear progression that unlocks new levels after deaths. PlayStation’s editorial description also identifies permanent upgrades that improve later escape chances.
What you learn from a failed run
Dead Cells makes information itself part of the progression. With no checkpoints, you repeatedly practice reading enemy patterns, choosing when to attack and deciding how far to explore before taking a risk. A death may remove the temporary build, but permanent unlocks and newly available routes can make future attempts broader. The game therefore rewards disciplined observation more than simply accumulating power.

Unlike Hades, Dead Cells is not presented as a game that cushions mistakes with a stacking damage-resistance system. The expected learning method is to understand combat, recognize patterns and use nonlinear routes intelligently. Players who enjoy demanding action may find that clarity motivating; players looking for a strong safety net may reach Hades or Rogue Legacy 2’s progression systems more comfortably.

How to choose in under a minute
Pick Hades if your priority is a forgiving first experience
Hades is the safest default when you are unsure whether you will enjoy repeating failed runs. The story keeps moving, God Mode is available whenever you need it, and permanent progression means experimentation is rarely empty.
Pick Rogue Legacy 2 if you want visible long-term power building
Rogue Legacy 2 puts the upgrade loop in the foreground. Select it when the idea of improving a manor, raising stronger heirs and collecting permanent heirlooms is more exciting than mastering one protagonist.
Pick Dead Cells if execution is the reward
Dead Cells is the focused choice for players who want to study attack patterns, movement and route decisions. Its permanent unlocks matter, but the central satisfaction comes from becoming better at the combat itself.

- Define the permanent layer before starting. Identify which upgrades, unlocks, story elements or route changes survive death. Treat everything else as a temporary experiment.
- Use the first attempts for information. Learn enemy timing, room layouts, biome transitions and the consequences of risky exploration. A run that ends early can still answer an important question.
- Change one major variable at a time. When a run fails, alter a weapon, heir, route or pacing choice rather than changing everything. This makes it easier to identify what actually helped.
- Spend persistent resources deliberately. Favor upgrades that improve consistency or open options when you are still learning. Save highly specialized choices for the point at which you understand their trade-offs.
- Adjust assistance without treating it as failure. In Hades, God Mode exists specifically to make the game more resilient to damage. In Rogue Legacy 2, use its slower or faster progression approach according to your tolerance. In Dead Cells, shorten your objective to learning one encounter or route instead of demanding a complete escape.
- Stop measuring success only by distance. A newly understood attack pattern, a permanent unlock or a better route decision is progress even when the run ends in the same area.
Difficulty, narrative and moment-to-moment demands
| Question | Hades | Rogue Legacy 2 | Dead Cells |
|---|---|---|---|
| How fast is the action? | Fast-paced action built around repeated escape attempts. | Varies with class, trait, weapon and biome combinations. | Demanding 2D action with pattern-based, souls-lite combat. |
| What motivates another run? | Story revelations, permanent progression and improved combat. | Family development, manor growth and stronger future heirs. | Mastery of combat plus new routes and permanent unlocks. |
| How direct is the difficulty support? | Very direct: God Mode and difficulty modifiers are explicit systems. | Progression depth and pacing options provide indirect support. | Support comes mainly from learning and route knowledge. |
| What kind of attention does it reward? | Reaction, build choices and persistence through repeated attempts. | Adaptation to changing heirs and long-term planning. | Pattern recognition, positioning and risk control. |

“Permadeath” describes the consequence of losing a run, not the absence of all progress. “Roguelike” and “rogue-lite” are used differently across storefronts and developers, which is why the three games can all fit a beginner’s search while offering different levels of persistence. The practical test is whether your long-term progress changes future attempts and whether the game gives you a way to learn from failure.
None of these games removes the need to improve. Persistent upgrades can increase options, damage tolerance or route access, but they do not turn every encounter into an automatic win. Hades is the most accommodating, Rogue Legacy 2 makes gradual power the central loop, and Dead Cells leaves the largest share of progress to your own combat knowledge.
Final recommendation
Buy or start with Hades when you want one recommendation that covers the widest range of beginner needs: permanent progression, an active story, adjustable challenge and God Mode that grows more protective after deaths. Choose Rogue Legacy 2 for the clearest inheritance-and-upgrades structure, especially if building a stronger family is more appealing than following one hero. Choose Dead Cells when your priority is mastering demanding 2D combat and exploring routes that open through repeated attempts.
