For everyday PDF work on a Mac, start with Apple Preview. It handles annotation, signatures, form filling, and page organization without another purchase. It is not a full content editor: Preview does not replace existing PDF text. If you need to rewrite text or images, recognize scanned pages, or apply a permanent redaction, choose a dedicated editor instead.
PDF Expert is a Mac-focused paid choice, while PDFgear presents a vendor-described free alternative. Foxit PDF Editor and Nitro PDF are better fits when Windows, iPhone, or iPad support matters; Adobe Acrobat remains a broad paid benchmark. The right choice depends on the operation you perform, the devices you use, and whether you prefer free, annual, or lifetime licensing—not on a universal best label.
Markup is not the same as editing a PDF
A PDF can contain a fixed page image, selectable text, vector graphics, form fields, annotations, or several of these layers at once. That distinction explains why one application may be excellent for marking up a document yet unable to change a sentence already on the page.

- Highlighting, underlining, drawing, shapes, text boxes, and notes.
- Adding a handwritten or saved signature.
- Typing into many existing form fields and organizing pages.
- Combining pages, rotating them, extracting pages, and exporting a copy.
Apple’s Preview documentation is the primary reference for the app; menus can vary by macOS release. Macworld’s comparison identifies Preview as lacking editing of existing text and describes its text recognition as available through Live Text. If the task is to change a paragraph that is already part of the PDF, use a dedicated editor.

What requires a dedicated editor
- Replacing, reflowing, or deleting original text and images.
- Running OCR on a scan so words become searchable or editable.
- Creating or substantially changing form fields.
- Applying a redaction that removes sensitive content rather than merely covering it.
- Converting documents in a controlled workflow or applying more advanced security settings.

The table combines manufacturer descriptions with Macworld and PCWorld coverage rather than a uniform independent benchmark. Feature names can change by edition, operating system, or subscription tier, so confirm the exact plan before buying.
Best first choice: Apple Preview
Use Preview for annotation, signatures, and pages
- Open the PDF in Preview and choose the Markup toolbar.
- Select a markup tool such as highlight, note, shape, text box, or sketch. Save a copy if you need to preserve an untouched original.
- For a signature, choose the signature tool, create one with the trackpad or camera when offered, and place it on the page.
- To manage pages, show thumbnails, then drag to reorder, rotate, extract, or combine pages. Export the result as a new PDF.
Preview is particularly sensible when you receive occasional contracts, school forms, or proofs and do not need to alter the original wording. It is also the lowest-friction way to fill a conventional AcroForm or add a signature on a Mac.
Know Preview’s boundary
A text box placed over an old sentence is an annotation, not a replacement for the underlying text. The old text may remain selectable, searchable, or recoverable. For genuine content changes, move to an editor with text and image editing, and use OCR first when the page is a scan.

PDF Expert: a Mac-native paid alternative
Macworld describes PDF Expert as a Mac-focused editor with text and image editing, signing, forms, redaction, conversion, OCR, and AI document tools. It is a natural fit for someone who wants a polished Mac workflow and needs more than Preview’s markup.
Choose the license around your devices
Macworld reports two macOS choices: a lifetime license and an annual license. The lifetime license is Mac-only. The annual plan includes future updates and mobile support. Current prices and regional availability were not stated, so check the vendor’s checkout for your country and confirm whether the included mobile apps match your devices.
When it makes sense
- You regularly edit existing text or graphics rather than only annotate.
- You want OCR, forms, signatures, and redaction in one Mac-oriented application.
- You are willing to pay for a focused desktop workflow.
Do not assume the lifetime purchase includes iPhone or iPad access; the reported mobile support belongs to the annual plan.

PDFgear for Mac: the free option to investigate carefully
PDFgear’s Mac page advertises a broad feature set: OCR for a full scanned PDF with export of recognized text, form filling and creation, signing, and permanent redaction. It says most editing works locally on the Mac, while AI features and online services require an internet connection.

Those statements are the vendor’s descriptions, not an independent measurement of OCR accuracy or a security audit. Test a representative scan from your own workflow. For sensitive files, inspect the output after redaction and attempt to select, copy, search, or extract the removed text before sharing it.
System requirement
The page accessed for this comparison stated a minimum of macOS 10.14. Operating-system requirements can change, so verify the current requirement before installing on an older Mac. A free download does not by itself establish that every AI or online feature is free or offline.
Adobe Acrobat: the broad paid benchmark
Adobe’s US product page accessed on October 13, 2026 listed Standard at US$14.99 per month and Pro at US$19.99 per month, both annual plans billed monthly. These are geography-, billing-term-, and promotion-sensitive prices, not a worldwide or permanent rate.
What Pro adds
The page describes Pro tools for creating and editing PDFs, signing, redacting, creating web forms, and turning scans into editable PDFs. PCWorld named Acrobat Pro its overall pick in its 2026 roundup and characterized it as a feature-rich benchmark.

Acrobat is appropriate when you need a large, established feature set, web-form creation, or a workflow shared with organizations that standardize on Acrobat. Compare the actual Standard and Pro feature lists for your region: the capabilities you need may be limited to Pro, and the subscription continues until canceled.

Foxit PDF Editor: professional features with an annual commitment
Macworld positions Foxit as a professional and business-oriented option. Its coverage lists text and image editing, conversion, OCR, redaction, security, and accessibility tools. It also notes a dense interface and an annual contract model; mobile access differs by plan.
Check the plan before deployment
If a team needs accessibility remediation, advanced security, or mobile review, verify that the selected annual tier includes those functions. A feature shown on a product family page may not be present in every edition. The annual commitment is a meaningful trade-off for a reader who wants to avoid recurring software expenses.
Nitro PDF: choose it for device coverage, then verify OCR
Nitro’s current official product page says its editor supports Mac, Windows, and iOS, with editing, conversion, security, signing, and OCR-related capabilities. That broad device coverage is useful for a household or organization that moves between Apple and Windows hardware.
Resolve the OCR discrepancy
Macworld’s comparison table lists Nitro PDF Pro with text editing and signing but no OCR, while Nitro’s current page describes OCR-related capabilities. The difference may reflect a product tier or version. Do not buy on the assumption that every Mac plan includes OCR; confirm the exact plan name and feature list.
Best fit
Nitro is worth shortlisting when cross-platform editing and iOS access matter more than a Mac-only lifetime license. Confirm export, signing, and security requirements in a trial or evaluation copy before a team rollout.
Wondershare PDFelement: flexible cross-platform licensing
Macworld lists PDFelement as a cross-platform alternative with text editing, OCR, annotation, forms, and single-platform or cross-platform licensing. That licensing choice can help when only one person uses a Mac or when several people need the same workflow across operating systems.

Usability considerations reported by Macworld
The review notes that some sidebar controls can be difficult to identify and that some editing can be unpredictable. Treat these as that review’s observations, not a guarantee of your experience. Test the operations you perform most often—especially replacing text, preserving fonts, and exporting a final copy—before committing to a team license.
ABBYY FineReader PDF for Mac: prioritize OCR and conversion
Macworld positions ABBYY FineReader as an option for digitizing documents, emphasizing OCR accuracy and conversion. It also notes that similarly priced applications may provide broader editing tools.
Who benefits most
Choose this direction when turning paper or image-only files into usable text is the central problem. If you also need extensive page design, web forms, or repeated content edits, compare its editing scope with a broader editor rather than assuming OCR strength makes it the best all-purpose choice.

OCR workflow: turn a scan into reliable text
- Keep the original scan unchanged and work on a duplicate.
- Check that pages are upright, legible, and not heavily compressed. OCR cannot reliably recover characters that are missing from the image.
- Run the editor’s OCR command and select the document language when the option is available.
- Search for names, dates, totals, and legal terms that matter to the document.
- Compare the recognized text with the page image, especially around tables, columns, signatures, punctuation, and characters such as 0/O or 1/l.
- Export a searchable PDF or editable format, then retain the original scan for auditability.
OCR creates a text layer; it does not prove that every recognized word is correct. Vendor claims that an application can OCR a full PDF should be treated as capability descriptions, not accuracy guarantees.

A black rectangle, highlight, or white shape can leave the original text underneath. Permanent redaction requires a tool that removes the selected content and any associated text or image data from the delivered file.

Safer redaction procedure
- Duplicate the source PDF and keep the original in a restricted location.
- Use the editor’s dedicated redaction command, not a drawing or annotation tool.
- Apply the redaction and save to a new filename.
- Close and reopen the output file.
- Try selecting, copying, searching, extracting, and inspecting the redacted area. If possible, test with a PDF object or text inspection utility used by your organization.
- Share only the verified output, not the source or an intermediate file.
PDFgear says its redaction tool permanently removes selected content. That is a vendor claim, not independent security verification. Apply the same duplicate-file and recovery checks to every editor, including a paid one, before disclosing confidential information.

Forms and signatures: check what kind of PDF you received
An interactive form contains fields that an application can recognize. A scanned paper form is only an image until OCR or manual field placement is applied. Preview can fill many existing fields and place a signature, while dedicated editors can create or redesign fields.
- If the cursor moves between labeled fields, fill the existing fields rather than drawing text over them.
- If the page is an image, use OCR when you need searchable text, or add text fields manually for a controlled form workflow.
- After signing, reopen the saved PDF and confirm that the signature, date, and completed fields remain visible.
- For web forms, confirm that the selected plan explicitly supports creation; Acrobat Pro’s product page lists this capability, while not every editor or tier does.
Licensing and platform decisions
Free or included
Preview has no separate purchase because it is included with macOS. PDFgear is presented by its vendor as a free alternative, but online and AI services require internet access and may follow different terms from local editing.
Lifetime purchase
Macworld reports a lifetime PDF Expert license for macOS. It is Mac-only, so it is unsuitable as a single purchase for a Windows workstation or for mobile access unless the annual plan’s support meets your needs.
Annual and subscription plans
Foxit is described as annual-contract software. Acrobat’s cited US prices are annual commitments billed monthly: US$14.99/month for Standard and US$19.99/month for Pro on the page accessed October 13, 2026. PDF Expert’s annual plan includes future updates and mobile support according to Macworld. Verify cancellation terms, renewal price, tax, and regional currency before checkout.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Expecting Preview to edit a sentence: use a content editor; an annotation does not change the original text layer.
- Editing a scan without OCR: run OCR first, then proofread critical fields against the image.
- Assuming every plan includes OCR: Nitro’s conflicting descriptions show why the exact product tier matters.
- Treating a black box as redaction: use a dedicated redaction tool and test the saved copy for recoverable text.
- Buying a Mac-only license for a mixed-device household: choose a cross-platform plan or confirm mobile and Windows rights before purchase.
- Relying on a vendor claim as a security audit: test with a duplicate and follow your organization’s disclosure controls.
- Overlooking export fidelity: open the finished PDF in a second viewer and inspect fonts, page order, links, signatures, and form values.
Recommendation
Use Preview unless you have a specific reason to install something else. For Mac-only editing with a paid, native-feeling workflow, compare PDF Expert’s lifetime and annual plans. Investigate PDFgear when a vendor-described free tool covers your OCR, forms, and redaction needs, but validate its output and privacy requirements yourself. Choose Acrobat, Foxit, Nitro, or PDFelement when you need broader editing, business controls, or multiple operating systems; choose ABBYY when OCR and conversion are the center of the job. Recheck plan names, prices, system requirements, and feature tiers immediately before purchase because those details change.
