For a detailed Windows sensor dashboard, start with HWiNFO. It offers CPU, GPU, motherboard, and drive readings alongside logging, alerts, graphs, and an on-screen display (OSD). CPUID HWMonitor is another dedicated hardware-monitoring option, while Open Hardware Monitor may suit readers who prefer open-source software. None can show sensors that a particular PC does not expose, and the available product information supports a feature guide—not a tested accuracy or performance ranking.
Choose a monitor for the view you need
Temperature-monitoring software reads sensors built into your CPU, GPU, motherboard, and other components. A useful choice depends not just on temperatures, but on whether you need detailed diagnostics, a compact live display, historical logging, alerts, or an open-source Windows app.
| Tool | What its official source describes | Good fit | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| HWiNFO | Real-time sensor monitoring for CPU, GPU, motherboard, and drives; logging, alerts, graphs, and tray or OSD display options. Its features page describes current, minimum, maximum, and average readings. | Detailed inspection, logging, or a configurable overlay. | Windows-focused; readings and OSD behavior depend on hardware and configuration. The features page says the free build’s OSD is limited to five entries; Pro removes that limit. |
| CPUID HWMonitor | Readings for temperatures, fan speeds, voltages, power, currents, utilization, and clocks, including CPU and GPU monitoring. | A dedicated hardware monitor from CPUID. | The product page does not establish support for every sensor or a comparative advantage over other tools. |
| Open Hardware Monitor | A free, open-source Windows application for reading temperatures and other hardware sensor values. | Readers who prioritize open-source software. | The project description does not establish compatibility with every recent device. |
These descriptions are feature claims from each project’s or vendor’s materials, not results from a controlled comparison. No accuracy or system-overhead ranking is established by the cited sources. HWiNFO’s homepage calls it “a comprehensive hardware analysis and monitoring utility for Windows” and describes it as read-only; those are the vendor’s characterizations.

HWiNFO is the most clearly documented fit here when you want to inspect a broad set of component sensors and keep a record. Its feature page describes current, minimum, maximum, and average values, along with graphs, logging, threshold alerts, and an OSD. That mix helps distinguish a brief temperature spike from a sustained pattern and can put selected readings in view while another app is open.

- Screen Stand Installation Guide: Please ensure that you use the (H) Screws specified in the instruction manual when installing the Screen Stand and the 8.8 Universal Screen. DO NOT use the longer screw “g”.
- Dynamic Control with L-Connect 3: Customize your viewing experience with L-Connect 3 software. Access preset themes and modular information, and upload your own videos and photos to create a personalized display that suits your style.
- USB-Powered Secondary Display: Enjoy plug-and-play connection via a 9-pin port or Type-A USB. This innovative design allows the 8.8" screen to function independently as a secondary monitor, displaying hardware stats, media, or custom visuals without using valuable GPU ports.
- Flexible Mounting Options: Versatile mounting bracket that supports height and tilt adjustments. Mount it securely to fan frames, attach it to case panels, or use adhesive pads for flat surfaces, ensuring optimal visibility from any angle.
- Stunning Diffused ARGB Lighting: Enhance your build's aesthetics with a built-in diffused ARGB lighting strip. Fully customizable through L-Connect 3, the lighting offers a spectrum of colors and effects, allowing synchronization with your entire system for a cohesive look.
The feature page states that the free build allows five OSD entries and that Pro removes the limit. That matters if your intended overlay needs more than five monitored values; it does not mean the free build is limited to five sensors overall. Check the official download page for current packages and licensing. It lists installer and portable versions and, in the version information cited here, showed 8.52. The page says HWiNFO 64/ARM64 is freeware for non-commercial use; availability, version, and terms can change.
HWiNFO’s homepage also displays vendor-published figures of 10 M+ downloads worldwide, a 4.8/5 average user rating, 2,000+ hardware sensors read, and 15+ years of development. The page does not state a year for those figures, and they are not independent measurements of accuracy or performance.

When to consider the alternatives
CPUID HWMonitor for a focused sensor readout
CPUID describes HWMonitor as covering temperatures and a range of other hardware readings, including fan speeds, voltage, power, current, utilization, and clocks. Consider it if you want a dedicated sensor utility from CPUID. The cited product information does not establish that it supports every reading on every PC, or that its measurements are more accurate or its overhead lower than another option.

How to pick the right readings and display
- Match the tool to the job. Choose HWiNFO for the documented combination of broad monitoring, logs, alerts, graphs, and OSD; consider HWMonitor for CPUID’s sensor utility or Open Hardware Monitor for an open-source Windows option.
- Find the component’s relevant sensor. Sensor labels vary by processor, graphics card, motherboard, and firmware. Confirm which reading corresponds to the CPU or GPU you want to watch rather than assuming similarly named values are interchangeable.
- Choose a display style. A sensor window is suited to inspection; a tray readout or OSD can keep selected values visible during other work. Verify that the tool and hardware expose the readings and display behavior you need.
- Use logging or alerts when a snapshot is not enough. Logs and graphs can show whether a reading is sustained or brief, and threshold alerts can notify you when a chosen value is crossed. Set thresholds with model-specific guidance rather than a universal temperature rule.
- Check platform, license, and compatibility. The cited options are Windows-oriented, and HWiNFO’s free-use terms distinguish non-commercial use. Confirm current support and terms on the relevant project or vendor page.
For a display that stays visible
If you want temperatures on a dedicated physical screen instead of only in a software window, an internal LCD sensor panel is an optional route. A GIGABYTE AORUS manual documents a setup using HWiNFO with an AORUS Sensor Panel. This is a specific setup example, not proof that every panel works with every PC. Check the panel’s compatibility and required software before buying or installing one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret a temperature reading
A single number does not by itself establish that a PC is overheating or defective. Identify the sensor, component, workload, and whether the reading persists; then compare it with official guidance for that exact CPU or GPU model. Different hardware can expose different sensors and use different labels, so there is no universal safe-temperature threshold supported for all PCs here.
