There is no single best Red Dead Redemption 2 PC preset for every system. Rockstar says that settings can affect performance differently depending on your configuration, so the reliable approach is to establish a baseline, start with the game’s quality slider, tune the settings Rockstar prioritizes, and confirm each change with the built-in benchmark at your normal resolution.
This method is more useful than copying a preset from another PC. Your processor, graphics card, memory, resolution, current game build, and tolerance for image-quality changes all influence the result. A setting that helps one configuration may do little on another, while an API change that resolves a launch problem is not automatically a faster rendering mode.
Start with a repeatable baseline
Before changing graphics options, note your current resolution, settings, graphics API, and the performance you see in the benchmark. Use the resolution you actually play at: a result at a different resolution is not a useful comparison for your regular setup. Run the benchmark before tuning so you have a reference point, then use the same benchmark and settings after each adjustment.

It analyzes the PC’s capabilities and adjusts background parameters based on the selected resolution and whether you prefer performance or image quality. Treat the slider as a starting point, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or a final preset that suits every scene.
- Open the game’s graphics settings and select the resolution you intend to use for normal play.
- Choose the quality-slider preference closest to your priority: performance or quality.
- Run Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test and record the result, including any obvious inconsistency or stutter.
- Keep the resolution, API, and other variables unchanged while you begin testing individual options.
- If the balance is not right, adjust advanced settings in a controlled way and run the same benchmark again.
Change one setting at a time where practical, or a small group when you are deliberately testing a group. Keep a simple note of the setting, its old and new values, the benchmark result, and what changed in the image. Include the date and game build if you revisit the process later. This makes it possible to undo an adjustment that looked promising numerically but introduced an unacceptable visual change.
Do not compare runs made with different resolutions, a different API, and several altered quality options at once. If the result improves, you will not know which change helped; if it gets worse, you will not know what to restore. A controlled loop takes longer than applying a random preset, but it produces a configuration you can explain and maintain.

Use the quality slider first, then take manual control
The quality slider is intended for quick optimization. Rockstar says it evaluates the PC’s capabilities and changes background parameters according to the chosen resolution and the player’s preference for performance or quality. That makes it a sensible first pass when you have not tuned the game before, have changed hardware, or have changed your display resolution.
After the slider makes its changes, run the benchmark and inspect the result rather than assuming the selected preference is correct. If it is close to what you want, manual tuning can target only the remaining problem. If it is not close, record the slider result as your baseline and proceed through Rockstar’s advanced-setting order. Avoid changing the slider repeatedly after manual edits unless you are willing to treat the new slider output as a fresh starting point.
The slider does not provide a published promise such as a fixed frame rate. Rockstar’s warning is explicit: “Depending on system configuration, different settings will have different impacts on game performance.” That is why a quality preference that works on one PC should be treated as a testable starting point rather than a universal recommendation.
Lower these settings first
For manual tuning, Rockstar’s first-priority sequence is the list below. It is a recommended order for experimenting, not a published ranking of frame-rate gains. The official tuning guidance provides no per-setting FPS improvements, and results depend on the PC.

Begin with the current value of MSAA and test a lower value, if one is available in your configuration. Compare the benchmark and the image at your actual resolution. If the result is not worthwhile, restore the original value before trying the next item. The same rule applies to Reflection Quality, Water Quality, Volumetric Quality, and Near Volumetric Resolution: test, observe, record, and keep the change only when the trade-off makes sense for your system.

Do not assume that the first item will always be the largest improvement. Rockstar places these settings first as a practical tuning sequence, but it does not publish a numerical ranking. A particular PC may respond differently to each option. The correct outcome can be a mixture of unchanged and reduced values rather than lowering every setting in the first group.
When assessing a change, look at both the benchmark result and ordinary gameplay. A benchmark can confirm that two configurations differ under the same test, while a normal session can reveal whether the change affects the kind of consistency you care about. If the image becomes noticeably worse without a useful improvement, revert it and continue down the list.
Refine the remaining graphics settings
If the first group does not achieve a satisfactory balance, Rockstar lists these settings for further experimentation, in this order:

Use the same test-and-compare approach for this second group. The ordering tells you where Rockstar suggests continuing to experiment; it does not establish how much any option will affect FPS, or whether lowering it will improve performance on your PC. Check visual changes as well as benchmark performance, and keep the combination that suits your target rather than pursuing the lowest possible settings.
Make notes that distinguish a visual preference from a performance result. For example, you may decide that a texture or shadow value is worth keeping because the image matters more to you, even if another value produces a larger benchmark change. Conversely, you may accept a visible reduction in one option if it removes the inconsistency you noticed during a repeatable run. There is no need to lower every item simply because it appears later in the list.
When several settings appear to make no measurable difference, leave them at their previous values and move on. A stable configuration with fewer compromises is preferable to a collection of changes whose effects you cannot identify. If you later change resolution or hardware, repeat the baseline process because Rockstar’s system-configuration warning applies again.
Choose settings by the problem you are solving
“Smooth” can mean more than a higher average frame rate. A benchmark comparison should account for how consistent play feels, including stutters, alongside the image quality you are willing to trade. Rockstar’s published tuning advice does not provide a universal FPS target or quantified gains, so use your own repeatable results to judge whether a change helps.

Keep the comparison fair when diagnosing a problem. A change to the graphics API, a reset settings file, a driver update, and a quality adjustment are separate variables. Test them separately where possible, document what happened, and retain the last configuration that launched reliably.

Vulkan or DirectX 12: compare them on your PC
The available Rockstar guidance does not establish Vulkan or DirectX 12 as the faster API overall. Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_INIT error when launching Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC support article, last updated June 12, 2024, says players can switch from Vulkan to DirectX 12 or vice versa through advanced graphics settings in system.xml when troubleshooting a graphics initialization error. That is support guidance for a particular class of problem, not a performance recommendation.
Rockstar’s historical update notes document issues affecting particular configurations with both APIs, including past DirectX 12 memory-leak behavior that could increase RAM use during extended sessions and Vulkan stuttering on some multi-GPU systems. The notes report fixes in the corresponding updates. They also describe crashes when graphics settings exceeded available video memory, with fixes in the relevant updates. These historical reports show why behavior can be configuration-specific; they are not evidence that the problems remain in current builds or that either API is generally superior.
- Use your current API as the baseline and note the benchmark, launch behavior, rendering symptoms, and any extended-session inconsistency.
- If there is a reason to test the alternative, change the API through the advanced graphics settings in
system.xml. Rockstar’s cited guidance does not specify a universal file location. - Restart if required, then compare the same benchmark or scene at the same resolution and graphics settings.
- Judge the result on smoothness, image quality, and reliability. A small benchmark difference is not automatically worthwhile if the alternative introduces a launch or rendering problem.
- Keep the alternative only if it improves the issue or benchmark on your system. If the game stops launching, revert the API setting or follow Rockstar’s troubleshooting advice to update drivers or reset settings files.
Do not describe Vulkan or DirectX 12 as a guaranteed solution to stuttering. The appropriate choice is the one that behaves better on your own configuration under the same test conditions. If neither API resolves the issue, return to the graphics-tuning loop instead of repeatedly changing APIs without a controlled comparison.
What the published PC requirements do—and do not—tell you
Rockstar’s PC store page lists these minimum and recommended specifications. They indicate the published system requirements, not a promise of smooth performance at a particular resolution, graphics preset, or frame rate. Rockstar also notes that requirements can change with downloadable content and programming changes.

The table can answer whether a PC is within Rockstar’s published eligibility range, but it cannot tell you which settings to select at your resolution. A recommended graphics card is not a benchmark result, and meeting the recommended processor and memory figures does not guarantee a chosen frame rate. Use the requirements as context, then let the benchmark establish what your particular system can sustain.
Rockstar’s store page also says the Rockstar Games Launcher and a Social Club login are required for installation, activation, and online play. Internet access is needed for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement checks. These are operational requirements rather than graphics optimizations, but they matter when diagnosing whether a launch problem is caused by access or initialization instead of rendering performance.
Do not infer that a storage upgrade, graphics-card purchase, or memory upgrade is required solely from this table. Without the reader’s exact hardware, resolution, and measured limitation, a generic hardware recommendation would not identify the actual bottleneck. Tune and measure first; consider hardware only after a specific limitation is established.

Start with one documented baseline. Select the intended resolution, leave the API unchanged, run Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test, and write down the result and any visible inconsistency. Then change the next setting in Rockstar’s order and repeat the same run. If the result is ambiguous, repeat that same configuration rather than adding another change.

Use a simple record such as “MSAA: original value to new value; same resolution; benchmark result; perceived smoothness; image-quality note.” Continue this format through the first-priority list and then the refinement list. It is acceptable to stop when the result meets your needs. The objective is a balanced configuration, not a complete tour of every option.
When comparing APIs, make a separate record for Vulkan and DirectX 12 with the same graphics values and test scene.
