There is no single best preset for every PC. For Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2), the most reliable approach is to let the in-game quality slider create a starting point, then adjust the settings with the largest measured impact and run the built-in benchmark after each change. For Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V), first identify whether you own the Enhanced or Legacy PC edition; Rockstar publishes different hardware requirements for each. Your GPU, CPU, resolution, available video memory and desired frame-rate/quality balance determine the final settings.

This guide gives a repeatable method instead of promising an FPS number that cannot be guaranteed for an unspecified computer. The hardware figures below are Rockstar’s published requirement tiers, not independent performance tests or fixed-FPS guarantees.

Start by identifying the game, edition and target

Write down these details before changing a setting:

  • Game: GTA V or RDR2.
  • GTA V edition: Enhanced or Legacy. Do not use one edition’s requirements as a guide for the other.
  • GPU and video memory: include the exact model and VRAM capacity.
  • CPU and system memory: note the processor and installed RAM.
  • Display target: resolution and the refresh rate you want to use.
  • Priority: smoother motion, higher image quality, or a compromise between them.

Rockstar states that different settings can have different performance impacts on different system configurations. Consequently, a setting combination that works on one computer is not evidence that it will produce the same result on another.

Rockstar’s published PC requirements

The following figures are the requirement tiers published by Rockstar. They describe whether a computer is within a minimum or recommended class; they do not specify a tested resolution, preset or FPS. Rockstar also notes that requirements can change as downloadable content and game programming change.

Game and edition Minimum memory Recommended memory Minimum GPU Recommended GPU Storage
RDR2 8GB RAM 12GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 2GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB 150GB
GTA V Enhanced 8GB RAM 16GB dual-channel RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1630 4GB or AMD Radeon RX 6400 4GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 8GB or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT 8GB 105GB SSD
GTA V Legacy 4GB RAM 8GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 2GB or AMD Radeon HD7870 2GB Rockstar’s cited Legacy requirement tier does not state a separate recommended GPU beyond the published specifications 125GB

The GTA V Enhanced figures are from Rockstar’s 2025 requirements information, while the GTA V Legacy figures are from the same 2025 publication. RDR2’s figures are from Rockstar’s 2024 requirements information. Treat the RTX 3060, RX 6600 XT, GTX 1060 and RX 480 entries as requirement examples, not as guarantees of a particular frame rate.

Best RDR2 settings: use a measured tuning sequence

Rockstar’s recommended starting point is the quality slider. Its support guidance says the slider analyzes the PC’s capabilities and adjusts a range of background parameters according to the selected resolution and the preference for higher performance or higher-quality graphics. Rockstar’s wording is explicit: “Depending on system configuration, different settings will have different impacts on game performance.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: Create a baseline

  1. Launch RDR2 and open Settings > Graphics.
  2. Choose the resolution you actually intend to play at.
  3. Use the quality slider to select whether the initial balance should favor performance or image quality.
  4. Apply the settings and record what you observe: average smoothness, noticeable hitching, image clarity and any warnings about video memory.
  5. Open Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test. Record the result as your baseline before making individual changes.

The benchmark gives you a repeatable reference. It does not turn a result from one computer into a universal recommendation; it tells you how your own configuration responds.

Step 2: Adjust the settings Rockstar places first

Rockstar’s tuning sequence starts with these settings: MSAA, Reflection Quality, Water Quality, Volumetric Quality and Near Volumetric Resolution. Change one setting, or one small related group, at a time. Run the benchmark again and keep a change only if its visual benefit is worth the measured performance cost on your machine.

  • Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
Setting group How to use it in a controlled test
MSAA Test separately from the other settings so you can identify its effect on your frame-time consistency and image edges.
Reflection Quality Compare the same benchmark run with the reflection option changed while leaving unrelated options untouched.
Water Quality Retest scenes or benchmark portions that contain water; keep the setting that provides an acceptable visual result without introducing unacceptable slowdowns.
Volumetric Quality Change it independently, then benchmark again rather than assuming the same cost reported by another PC.
Near Volumetric Resolution Evaluate it with volumetric effects visible and record whether the quality difference matters at your normal viewing distance.

Step 3: Work through the remaining RDR2 options

After the first group, Rockstar lists these settings for further experimentation: TAA, Texture Quality, Lighting Quality, Shadow Quality, Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, Anisotropic Filtering, Far Shadow Quality, Tessellation Quality, FXAA, Volumetric Lighting Quality, Triple Buffering, Global Illumination Quality, Particle Quality, Mirror Quality and Far Volumetric Resolution.

  1. Pick one setting from the list and change only that option.
  2. Run the benchmark from the same menu.
  3. Compare the new result with your baseline and inspect the image at the resolution you use for play.
  4. Keep a change when its visual improvement justifies the measured cost; revert it when the cost is not worthwhile.
  5. Once you have tested individual options, make a combined run using the settings you intend to keep.

Do not assume that every option should be reduced. Texture clarity, filtering and lighting may matter more to your personal perception than a small benchmark difference, while another player may value maximum smoothness. The benchmark and your target display are the deciding evidence.

Three practical RDR2 profiles

These are decision frameworks, not universal slider positions or guaranteed FPS presets.

Performance-first

  • Move the quality slider toward higher performance.
  • Test MSAA, reflections, water and volumetric options first, because Rockstar places them at the front of its adjustment sequence.
  • Keep settings that preserve readable textures and stable motion, even if some distant or atmospheric detail is reduced.
  • Confirm the combined result with the benchmark at your actual resolution.

Balanced

  • Use the slider to establish a middle ground between performance and quality.
  • Prioritize settings you notice during normal play, then spend remaining performance headroom on the options that improve the scenes you care about.
  • Benchmark after each change and stop when the measured gain is no longer visible during play.

Quality-first

  • Move the slider toward higher quality, then watch the benchmark and video-memory meter.
  • Keep high-impact visual options only while frame pacing and memory usage remain acceptable.
  • If stutter, crashes or a memory warning appears, follow the memory troubleshooting procedure below instead of continuing to raise settings.

Fixing RDR2 video-memory warnings, stutter and crashes

Rockstar’s memory-error guidance starts with verification rather than an automatic hardware purchase.

  1. Confirm that the computer meets RDR2’s minimum requirements, including the listed GPU class, 8GB minimum system memory and 150GB of storage.
  2. Lower graphics settings and restart the game if necessary.
  3. Use the in-game Video Memory meter as a guide. Rockstar recommends starting at approximately two-thirds of the available video memory in the context of troubleshooting a memory error.
  4. Run the benchmark again and test the same gameplay situation that previously stuttered or crashed.
  5. Raise settings gradually only after the warning and instability have stopped.

The two-thirds figure is troubleshooting guidance, not a universal performance target. It is particularly relevant when the game reports a memory problem; it does not mean every player must permanently cap the meter at that value.

When to try Vulkan or DirectX 12 in RDR2

Rockstar documents switching between the Vulkan and DirectX 12 graphics APIs for certain graphics errors. Treat this as a troubleshooting branch, not an automatic optimization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep a note of the current API and the exact error, artifact or crash behavior.
  2. Switch to the other API in the game’s graphics settings.
  3. Restart the game, repeat the same test and compare stability and visual correctness.
  4. Keep the change only if it resolves the specific problem without creating another one.

There is no evidence here that one API is universally faster on every GPU, driver or Windows configuration.

Best GTA V settings: edition-specific and measurement-based

GTA V requires a different first step from RDR2: identify the edition. Enhanced and Legacy have separate Rockstar requirement tiers, different memory expectations and different storage requirements. Applying Enhanced requirements to Legacy, or Legacy requirements to Enhanced, can lead to a wrong diagnosis of a performance problem.

GTA V Enhanced

Rockstar lists 8GB RAM as the minimum and 16GB dual-channel RAM as recommended. The listed minimum GPUs are the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1630 4GB and AMD Radeon RX 6400 4GB. The recommended examples are the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 8GB and AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT 8GB. Rockstar lists 105GB on an SSD for storage.

GTA V Legacy

Rockstar lists 4GB RAM as the minimum and 8GB RAM as recommended. Its minimum GPU examples are the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 2GB and AMD Radeon HD7870 2GB, with 125GB of storage listed. These figures describe the Legacy edition and should not be used as a performance promise for Enhanced.

A repeatable GTA V tuning loop

  1. Confirm Enhanced or Legacy in your launcher or game installation.
  2. Set the display resolution and frame-rate goal you will actually use.
  3. Begin with the game’s general quality balance rather than immediately maximizing every individual option.
  4. Record a baseline in a repeatable location or sequence of gameplay. Use the same route, weather and camera behavior as closely as practical.
  5. Change one group of graphics options at a time, apply the settings and repeat the same test.
  6. Watch for inconsistent frame pacing, hitching, texture loading problems, crashes and video-memory warnings—not only the highest instantaneous FPS.
  7. Keep the settings that meet your smoothness target while preserving the visual details you value most.

Unlike RDR2, the material available for this guide does not establish universal GTA V slider values or a cross-system benchmark result. Therefore, a profile that says “set everything to a particular percentage” would be false precision.

Common mistakes and the correct response

Using a preset copied from another PC

Why it fails: settings have configuration-dependent impacts. Correction: establish your own baseline, alter one group at a time and measure again.

Confusing GTA V Enhanced with Legacy

Why it fails: the editions have different GPU, RAM and storage tiers. Correction: identify the edition before judging whether your computer is below, near or above the relevant requirement class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a requirement as an FPS guarantee

Why it fails: Rockstar’s requirement tables do not specify a guaranteed resolution, preset or frame rate. Correction: use them as compatibility guidance, then benchmark or measure your own system.

Raising every option after an upgrade

Why it fails: a new GPU does not remove CPU limits, memory limits or frame-time problems. Correction: change settings incrementally and retain only improvements visible at your target resolution.

Switching APIs because another player recommends it

Why it fails: Vulkan and DirectX 12 behavior varies by system, and Rockstar documents the switch for certain errors rather than as a universal speed boost. Correction: switch only as a controlled troubleshooting test.

Should you upgrade the GPU?

Try the tuning process first. A hardware purchase is justified only when the computer cannot reach the chosen balance after lowering settings and confirming that the problem is genuinely GPU or video-memory limited.

For GTA V Enhanced, Rockstar’s recommended GPU examples include an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 8GB and AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT 8GB. Those entries can help you classify the level of hardware Rockstar considers recommended for that edition, but the published information does not establish current pricing, availability, RDR2 performance, or suitability for every resolution. Do not treat the RTX 3060 as an automatic recommendation for every player.

Before spending money, verify the exact edition, system memory, storage type, CPU behavior, GPU utilization and video-memory usage during the scenario that fails. If lowering graphics options changes the problem substantially, continue tuning; if it does not, investigate CPU, drivers, thermals, background software or storage before assuming that a larger GPU is the answer.

A concise decision checklist

  • Have you identified GTA V Enhanced versus Legacy?
  • Have you recorded your GPU, VRAM, CPU, RAM, resolution and target smoothness?
  • For RDR2, have you started with the quality slider?
  • For RDR2, have you used Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test after establishing a baseline?
  • Have you tested MSAA, reflections, water, volumetrics and near volumetric resolution before spending time on the longer RDR2 list?
  • If RDR2 reports a memory error, have you checked requirements, lowered settings and tried approximately two-thirds of available video memory?
  • Are you treating Vulkan/DirectX 12 switching as troubleshooting rather than a guaranteed optimization?
  • Have you measured GTA V in the correct edition instead of copying a preset from the other edition?
  • Are your final settings based on your chosen resolution and frame-rate/quality balance rather than an internet FPS promise?
