Start with the High preset, install Gears of War: E-Day on an SSD, update your graphics driver, and run the built-in benchmark at your actual resolution and refresh rate. From there, choose DLSS 4.5, FSR, TSR, or XeSS in a Quality-class mode, then lower ray tracing before reducing texture quality when the GPU is the limit. Keep frame generation for later, after the non-generated frame rate is stable, and leave Low Core Mode off on a modern six-core-or-better desktop unless testing proves that your system has a streaming problem.

This order preserves the settings that most affect image quality while exposing whether your limit is the GPU, CPU, storage, or frame-delivery path. The exact best values vary by graphics card, processor, display, and target frame rate, so use the benchmark to validate each change rather than assuming a slider has a universal cost.

Use this baseline before changing individual sliders

The following setup is a reliable starting point for a current gaming PC:

  1. Install the game on an SSD. The official Gears FAQ, dated August 4, 2026, says mechanical hard drives are not supported and can cause severe loading issues, missing assets, stuttering, and crashes.
  2. Update the graphics driver. The beta guidance in that FAQ lists AMD driver 26.7.1, NVIDIA driver 610.74, or Intel driver 101.8864 and newer. Those versions are guidance for the beta; final-release requirements can change, so check the driver notes for your release.
  3. Select the High preset. Tom’s Hardware’s CPU testing found High to be the practical visual floor for CPU scaling and saw little additional performance from dropping to Medium in its test system.
  4. Run the built-in benchmark at the resolution, refresh rate, and upscaler mode you actually intend to play.
  5. Decide whether the GPU or CPU is limiting performance before lowering settings. The correct fix is different for each bottleneck.
  6. Add an upscaler, then tune ray tracing. Start with a Quality or equivalent mode and reduce ray tracing if the GPU remains saturated.
  7. Enable frame generation only after base rendering is steady. Generated frames increase displayed frame rate but do not replace a stable, responsive base frame rate.
  8. Leave Low Core Mode disabled on a normal modern desktop with six or more cores unless your own benchmark shows a specific asset-streaming problem.

This sequence avoids spending image quality on a setting that cannot address your actual limit.

Storage and driver requirements that affect stutter

An SSD is a requirement, not an optional optimization

The official FAQ states: “SSD Required: HDDs (slower mechanical drives) are not supported and may cause severe loading issues, missing assets, stuttering, and crashes.” Install the game on an internal SSD with enough free space for the game and its updates. Moving an installation from an HDD to an SSD is the first troubleshooting step when you see texture pop-in, pauses while entering a level, missing assets, or crashes that occur during streaming.

Install a current GPU driver

For the beta, the official guidance names AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 610.74, and Intel 101.8864 or newer. Treat these as a floor for that guidance, not a promise that the same versions are final-release requirements. If a new driver is available for your GPU, read its E-Day notes and restart the PC after installation before comparing benchmark runs.

How to benchmark E-Day consistently

Use the game’s benchmark instead of judging one busy combat scene. A repeatable run lets you separate a real improvement from a different camera angle or a one-time hitch.

  1. Set the display to the refresh rate you use for play.
  2. Choose the output resolution you want to target: 1080p, 1440p, or 4K.
  3. Select High as the initial preset.
  4. Choose a quality-oriented upscaler mode, or use native resolution for a baseline.
  5. Record the average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, GPU utilization, and whether the image shows shimmer or softness.
  6. Change one setting group at a time, rerun the benchmark, and keep the run conditions identical.

Average FPS tells you the sustained throughput. The 1% low and frame-time graph reveal whether movement and camera pans feel consistent. A higher average with worse frame pacing can feel less responsive than a slightly lower but steadier result.

Identify whether the GPU or CPU is the bottleneck

GPU-limited behavior

Tom’s Hardware found its 4K tests completely GPU-bound and saw a GPU-bound ceiling around 130 FPS at 1440p. If GPU utilization is close to full while the frame rate misses your target, reduce the amount of work sent to the GPU:

  • Move from native resolution to a more efficient upscaler mode.
  • Reduce or disable ray tracing.
  • Lower demanding lighting, shadow, volumetric, or effects options one at a time.
  • Use a lower output resolution only after trying a quality-oriented upscaler.

Texture quality is usually the last visual setting to sacrifice when the card has enough VRAM; no cited source provides a universal FPS cost for any individual texture, shadow, volumetric, lighting, or effects slider, so validate each change with the benchmark.

CPU-limited behavior

If GPU utilization is low while one or more CPU cores are saturated, lowering resolution may do almost nothing. Close background workloads, keep the High preset as your starting point, and consider a faster CPU if your target frame rate remains out of reach. E-Day shows unusually strong CPU scaling, so processor choice can matter even when the game looks GPU-heavy.

What the published CPU tests show

Tom’s Hardware measured the following in its 2026 test lab. These are comparative results from that test platform, not guaranteed gains on every motherboard, memory kit, or graphics card.

Test condition Measured result How to interpret it
1080p, High Ryzen 7 9800X3D delivered 42% higher performance than Ryzen 5 7600X At a high frame-rate target, a faster CPU can remove a substantial limit.
Ultra preset Nearly 29% spread between the cited Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 5 9600X comparison CPU differences remain visible at Ultra in the cited test.
Ludicrous preset 6.8% spread between the cited Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 5 9600X comparison At this preset, the tested systems were closer together.

Use your own utilization and frame-time data to decide whether a CPU upgrade is justified; do not apply those percentages directly to a different GPU or resolution.

Choose an upscaler without sacrificing more detail than necessary

E-Day supports NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR, Unreal Engine TSR, and Intel XeSS. Select the implementation supported by your GPU, then compare Quality or the equivalent quality-focused mode first.

Option When to start What to check
NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 Use on supported NVIDIA hardware Compare fine geometry, motion stability, and distant detail against native resolution.
AMD FSR Use on supported AMD hardware and other compatible GPUs Watch foliage, cables, and high-contrast edges for shimmer or reconstruction artifacts.
Unreal Engine TSR Use when you want the engine’s temporal reconstruction path Check image stability during camera movement and whether the Quality mode meets your frame target.
Intel XeSS Use on supported Intel hardware and compatible systems Compare sharpness and ghosting in motion with the same benchmark scene.

Do not compare only the FPS number. Judge four axes together: average FPS, 1% lows and frame pacing, image stability and sharpness, and input latency. A mode that adds frames but produces obvious shimmer is not an image-quality improvement.

A practical upscaler sequence

  1. Run native resolution once and save the average and 1% low.
  2. Switch to the upscaler’s Quality or equivalent mode and rerun the benchmark.
  3. If the GPU is still saturated and the image remains clean, try the next performance-oriented mode.
  4. Stop when the display target is met; do not use a softer mode merely because it produces a larger headline FPS number.

Ray tracing, lighting, and texture priorities

Ray tracing is an optional visual cost

Xbox Wire confirms hardware ray-tracing support. Ray tracing can improve lighting fidelity, but it also increases GPU time. If the GPU is the bottleneck, reduce or disable ray tracing before dropping texture quality. This preserves surface detail while targeting the feature that is consuming the most rendering time on a GPU-limited system.

Keep textures high when memory allows

Texture quality changes surface detail rather than the core lighting calculation. Start from High and lower textures only if you encounter VRAM-related hitching, missing detail, or instability. Because no cited source publishes a reproducible FPS cost for each texture slider, confirm the result in the benchmark and in a representative level.

Tune shadows, volumetrics, lighting, and effects as a group

These options can be useful after resolution, upscaling, and ray tracing are set, but no cited source publishes a universal percentage reduction for each slider. Change one option at a time, record the frame-time result, and keep the setting only when the visual trade-off is acceptable. Reducing a setting that has no measurable effect on your bottleneck only makes the image worse.

Frame generation: use it after base FPS is stable

Xbox Wire confirms DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and Super Resolution, and the Steam listing describes optional frame generation and multi-frame generation. These features create additional displayed frames between traditionally rendered frames. They can make motion appear smoother, but the base-rendered frames still determine much of the input response.

  1. First tune native or upscaled rendering until the non-generated frame rate is stable and your 1% lows are acceptable.
  2. Enable the frame-generation option supported by your GPU.
  3. Check camera movement, aiming, and fast turns for artifacts or uneven pacing.
  4. Compare latency and responsiveness, not just the displayed FPS counter.
  5. Disable it if the base frame rate is unstable or controls feel delayed.

Do not treat a generated 120 FPS reading as equivalent to a natively rendered 120 FPS workload. Frame generation is a finishing step for smoothness, not a substitute for fixing a CPU, GPU, or storage bottleneck.

Low Core Mode: why it usually hurts performance

Leave Low Core Mode off on a modern desktop with six or more cores unless you can reproduce a specific streaming issue. Tom’s Hardware tested 25 CPUs and found Low Core Mode reduced performance on every normal configuration it tested, commonly by 14% to 32%. The only positive result came from an unusually constrained dual-core setup, where the mode fixed asset-streaming problems and freezes.

If you are troubleshooting a rare low-core system, run two identical benchmark passes: one with the mode disabled and one enabled. Keep it only if it removes reproducible freezes or streaming stalls without introducing a meaningful frame-rate or frame-time penalty.

Resolution-specific starting profiles

1080p high-refresh play

  • Begin with High, not Medium.
  • Use an upscaler only if the GPU cannot meet the display refresh target; CPU limits are more likely at very high frame rates.
  • Watch individual CPU-core saturation and 1% lows.
  • Keep ray tracing conservative if the GPU is near full utilization.
  • Consider frame generation only after the base frame rate is already stable.

1440p

  • High plus a Quality-class upscaler is the first combination to test.
  • Tom’s Hardware observed a GPU-bound ceiling around 130 FPS in its 1440p testing, so lowering CPU-heavy settings may not raise performance when the GPU is already saturated.
  • Reduce ray tracing or move to a more efficient upscaler mode before lowering textures.

4K

  • Expect the GPU to be the primary limit; Tom’s Hardware found its 4K tests completely GPU-bound.
  • Use DLSS 4.5, FSR, TSR, or XeSS in a quality-focused mode before lowering output resolution.
  • If the frame rate is still below target, reduce ray tracing and the heaviest lighting or volumetric options.
  • Use frame generation only after the non-generated result is steady.

Image-quality tuning that does not waste performance

Use a side-by-side benchmark run or a repeatable in-game camera position. Inspect fine geometry, foliage, distant objects, reflective surfaces, and dark areas while moving the camera. A still screenshot can hide temporal artifacts that are obvious during play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Prefer Quality upscaling over aggressive performance modes when the target frame rate is already close.
  • Reduce ray tracing before textures when GPU utilization is high.
  • Keep High as the floor when Medium produces little measured gain on your CPU-limited system.
  • Check 1% lows after every change. A higher average with worse lows can feel less smooth.
  • Judge generated and base frames separately. Displayed FPS and input latency answer different questions.

Stutter and crash troubleshooting

If the game stutters while loading or entering new areas

  1. Confirm the installation is on an SSD, not a mechanical HDD.
  2. Update to the current driver recommended for your release.
  3. Disable Low Core Mode unless you are testing a constrained dual-core system.
  4. Close background applications that consume CPU time or disk bandwidth.
  5. Run the benchmark and observe whether the hitch repeats at the same point.

If lowering resolution does not improve FPS

Check GPU utilization and CPU-core load. Low GPU utilization alongside a saturated core indicates a CPU or background-workload limit. Keep High, close other workloads, and test again. If the same limit remains, a faster CPU may be more effective than further GPU-quality cuts.

If the game looks soft or shimmers after an FPS change

Return to the previous upscaler mode, compare Quality against the next more aggressive mode, and inspect moving detail rather than a static menu. If native resolution is fast enough, use it as the reference image and choose the least aggressive reconstruction mode that reaches your target.

If frame generation feels laggy

Turn it off and verify the non-generated frame rate and frame pacing. Re-enable it only when base rendering is stable. A higher displayed counter cannot compensate for an unstable input path.

What the developers say about the PC presentation

Mike Perzel, Rendering Lead at The Coalition, said on Xbox Wire on July 14, 2026: “Built on DirectX 12, we’re focused on delivering a great experience across console and PC. Partnering with NVIDIA gives us the opportunity to further enhance that world for PC players with the performance, responsiveness, and visual fidelity PC players expect.” The statement explains the game’s DirectX 12 foundation and its emphasis on performance, responsiveness, and visual fidelity, but it does not replace testing on your hardware.

A repeatable tuning checklist

  • SSD installation verified.
  • GPU driver updated for the current release.
  • High preset selected.
  • Benchmark run at the actual display resolution and refresh rate.
  • GPU utilization and CPU-core load recorded.
  • Quality-class upscaler compared with native resolution.
  • Ray tracing reduced before texture quality when GPU-bound.
  • Individual shadow, volumetric, lighting, and effects changes validated rather than assumed.
  • Low Core Mode left off unless a reproducible low-core streaming problem exists.
  • Frame generation tested only after stable base FPS and acceptable input response.

The resulting profile is the best balance for your hardware when it meets your frame-rate target, keeps frame pacing consistent, and preserves the image details you notice during movement. There is no single slider combination that wins on every PC; the benchmark and utilization data tell you which compromise is worthwhile.
