For most PC players, TechRadar names the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 its best overall PC controller. Its shortlist also includes the 8BitDo Pro 3 as a budget pick, the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro as a premium pick, and Valve’s Steam Controller (2026) as the most feature-rich option. Those are TechRadar’s editorial rankings—not universal or independently reproduced results. The right choice depends on your games, connection preferences, budget, and whether you want a conventional gamepad or Steam-focused controls.
Which PC controller should you choose?
| Controller | Best for | What stands out | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller | Most players | 2.4GHz, Bluetooth, or USB-C wired connection; remappable controls; TMR thumbsticks; RGB; included charging dock | TechRadar reports roughly 10–15 hours of battery life and flags the lighting and endurance as drawbacks. |
| 8BitDo Pro 3 | Budget buyers seeking customization | TMR sticks, customization, wireless connectivity, and a dock, according to TechRadar | TechRadar’s reviewer found the center Start and Select buttons crowded. It is not compatible with Xbox or PlayStation and has no 3.5 mm headphone jack. |
| Razer Wolverine V3 Pro | Premium controller experience | TechRadar’s premium recommendation, based on its editorial assessment of the controller experience | TechRadar flags its high price and around 12 hours of battery life. |
| Valve Steam Controller (2026) | Steam users who want extra controls | TMR sticks, gyro, two touchpads, and Steam Input customization | TechRadar notes its PC focus and lack of an audio jack. PC Gamer reports a launch price of $99/€99/£85/A$149; check current local pricing. |
TechRadar says its selections weigh build quality, performance, features, price, longevity, and value, and that it tests controllers across shooters, fighting games, racing games, and platformers. Its ranking is a useful starting point, but priorities such as layout, battery life, and console compatibility can change which controller makes sense for you.
What makes each pick a good fit?
8BitDo Ultimate 2: a versatile all-rounder
The Ultimate 2 gives you three connection options: 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth, and USB-C wired. It also combines remappable controls, TMR thumbsticks, RGB lighting, and an included charging dock. That mix makes it a flexible option if you switch between wired play and wireless use or value a dock for storage and charging.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

TechRadar estimates roughly 10–15 hours of battery life and considers both the battery life and RGB lighting drawbacks. 8BitDo lists Windows 10 (1903) and above and SteamOS 3.7.13 and above as supported systems, with PC 2.4G and wired connections. Its product page also describes dock support and customization software: 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller. Treat any manufacturer claims about latency or polling rate as the company’s test claims, not independent validation.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
8BitDo Pro 3: a customizable budget choice
TechRadar’s budget pick is the Pro 3, which it highlights for TMR sticks, customization, wireless connectivity, and an included dock. Its review also identifies practical compromises: the Start and Select buttons sit close together, the controller does not work with Xbox or PlayStation, and there is no 3.5 mm headphone jack. Those limits matter if you want to reuse one controller across consoles or connect a wired headset directly.
Razer Wolverine V3 Pro: a premium option
TechRadar names the Wolverine V3 Pro its premium recommendation and praises the controller experience, while flagging a high price and around 12 hours of battery life. These are the outlet’s editorial judgment and reported endurance figure, not a universal measure of performance. Consider it if you prioritize the premium experience over price or longer reported battery life.

How should you compare PC gamepads?
Before choosing, compare the details that affect your own setup and the games you play:
- Operating system, launcher, and console use: Check that the controller works with your operating system and the games or launcher you use. If you also want console use, verify support for that console rather than assuming a PC controller will transfer.
- Connection: Decide whether you need wired USB, Bluetooth, 2.4GHz wireless, or more than one option. A controller’s supported connections can vary by platform.
- Sticks and triggers: Compare the control hardware and feel that matter for your games. The featured models’ TMR sticks are one specification to consider, not by themselves proof of better play for every person.
- Extra controls and customization: Remapping, paddles, gyro, touchpads, and configuration software can help if you want controls beyond a standard layout. They may be unnecessary if you prefer a simpler pad.
- Grip, layout, and weight: Button placement and comfort are personal. If possible, try a similar layout before buying, especially if you expect long sessions.
- Battery and charging: Compare reported endurance with your habits, and consider whether a charging dock or wired option suits how you store and use the controller.
- Price and value: Check the current price where you live and weigh it against features you will actually use; launch or review-era pricing may no longer apply.
Should you buy a PC controller?
A controller is worthwhile if you expect to use it regularly or play genres that feel natural on a gamepad. TechRadar specifically calls out racing and fighting games as genres where one can be particularly useful. If you mostly play games designed around mouse and keyboard, or would only use a controller occasionally, the value may be lower. Consider the games you play most and whether the controls suit them before spending on extra features.

Can you use a Nintendo Switch or PS5 controller on PC?
Yes, Switch Pro and PS5 DualSense or DualSense Edge controllers can be used on PC, according to TechRadar. Support for DualSense features such as haptics and adaptive triggers depends on compatible titles; do not assume every game exposes those features. Check each game’s support information and follow the connection and setup requirements for your controller.
