For most Indian shops, start by comparing PhonePe merchant QR, Google Pay for Business and BharatPe for Business. BharatPe is the strongest fit when one QR must work with many UPI apps and you may also need cards. Google Pay is attractive for a very small shop whose account stays within Google’s stated ₹50,000 monthly individual-account guidance. PhonePe is a straightforward counter-QR replacement when customers already use that app. Use Razorpay separately when the shop also needs payment links, invoices or online checkout; its gateway pricing is not the same as accepting a basic in-store QR.
Provider onboarding, KYC, settlement schedules, bank rules and hardware charges can change. Confirm the current terms shown during signup before printing a QR or paying for a soundbox.
Quick comparison of the practical alternatives
The right choice depends less on the logo printed on the QR and more on how customers pay, how much the shop receives each month, whether cards are needed and whether the business sells online. This table separates the main use cases before the detailed guidance.
| Alternative | Best fit | QR interoperability | Cards | Online tools | What to verify before joining |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PhonePe merchant QR | A counter that wants a direct PhonePe replacement for Paytm QR | Customers can pay by scanning the merchant QR or using a VPA or mobile number; confirm the current acceptance arrangement during onboarding | Not stated in the cited merchant terms | Not stated in the cited merchant terms | Merchant pricing, settlement timing, soundbox availability and hardware charges |
| Google Pay for Business | A very small shop using an eligible bank account and mainly taking UPI | Customers can pay in stores and online; a UPIC is available | Not stated as a card-acquiring service in the cited help material | Store and online payment acceptance are described | Account type, bank policy, KYC and the account’s monthly receiving limit |
| BharatPe for Business | A shop wanting one QR for many UPI apps, with optional card acceptance | The official listing says one QR accepts Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon UPI and more than 150 banking apps | BharatSwipe supports debit and credit cards | Payment features are primarily merchant acceptance; lending and investment products are separate | Current MDR or service charges, settlement, support and BharatSwipe hardware terms |
| Razorpay Payment Gateway | A shop that sells online or needs links, pages, buttons, invoices or checkout | Gateway acceptance rather than a simple counter QR | Gateway card acceptance is available, subject to account approval and current terms | Payment links, pages, buttons, invoices and checkout | Total gateway fee, GST, settlement choice and whether online volume justifies the technology fee |
Which alternative should a typical shop choose?
Choose BharatPe when one QR must cover many apps
BharatPe for Business is the clearest match for a shop where customers arrive with different UPI apps. Its official app listing describes a single QR that accepts Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon UPI and more than 150 other banking applications. That reduces the need to keep several app-specific codes on the counter and makes it easier for a customer to pay with the app already installed on their phone.

The same listing describes BharatSwipe for debit and credit cards. This matters for shops whose customers sometimes want to pay by card or whose average bill is high enough that a card option prevents a lost sale. Treat card acceptance as a separate service: the QR and BharatSwipe device may have different approval, rental, transaction and settlement terms.
BharatPe’s listing also promotes loans and investment features. Those are separate financial products, not free add-ons that come automatically with QR acceptance. Read the product-specific terms, eligibility rules and costs rather than assuming that taking UPI creates access to credit or investment returns.
Choose Google Pay for Business for a very small, mostly-UPI counter
Google says its app can accept business payments in India and currently states: “There are currently no fees to use Google Pay for commercial payments.” Its help material also says an individual current account can receive up to ₹50,000 per month through UPI without fees. That guidance is especially relevant to a tiny shop or sole proprietor whose monthly UPI receipts remain below that level.
The ₹50,000 figure is not a universal promise for every business account. Google notes that a bank may charge fees or impose additional requirements beyond the guidance, and the applicable account type, bank policy and KYC status matter. Confirm that the account you plan to connect is eligible, and ask the bank what happens when receipts exceed the stated threshold.
Google also says merchants can use a UPIC and that customers can pay in stores and online. This makes it useful when a shop has a small web presence as well as a physical counter, provided the merchant account and bank setup support the needed flow. Do not infer card acquiring, a soundbox or a particular settlement schedule from the no-fee statement; those details are not established by the cited help page.

Choose PhonePe merchant QR when local customer familiarity is the priority
PhonePe’s UPI terms describe paying at merchant locations by scanning a QR code or using a VPA or mobile number. For a shop whose regular customers already ask for PhonePe, that is a direct replacement for a Paytm-style counter QR: display the approved merchant code, let the customer scan it and verify the payment in the merchant app or bank account.
The cited PhonePe terms do not publish a complete merchant fee schedule or a soundbox price. Do not advertise the service as permanently free or assume that a soundbox is included. Check the current onboarding screen, settlement information and hardware offer for your business category and location. If customers use several UPI apps, ask whether the issued QR is interoperable for your account rather than assuming that a code branded with one app accepts every app.
Choose Razorpay when the shop is also an online business
Razorpay Payment Gateway belongs in a different category from a basic in-store QR. It is designed for payment links, hosted pages, buttons, invoices and online checkout, which can help a shop collect advance orders, send a payment request over messaging or take payments on its own website.
Its pricing FAQ says standard bank-to-bank UPI has zero bank MDR, but Razorpay adds a 2% platform or technology fee plus applicable GST. The distinction is important: zero bank MDR does not mean the gateway transaction is free. Razorpay lists ₹0 setup and maintenance fees and says settlement is typically T+1 or instant, subject to the selected arrangement and account terms. Compare the total fee on your actual online volume before using it for routine counter payments.
UPI fees and MDR in India: what applies in 2026?
The Ministry of Finance release dated 15 September 2026 sets out the current framework in the supplied material. All person-to-person (P2P) UPI transactions remain free. Person-to-merchant (P2M) payments up to ₹2,000 remain free of MDR. Small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh per month through UPI QR under the P2PM category continue to receive zero MDR on all transactions.

Specified P2M transactions above ₹2,000 attract 0.4% MDR, capped at ₹300 for transactions of ₹75,000 or more. The exact category of a transaction, the merchant’s classification and the provider’s settlement arrangement determine whether that rule applies. Ask the provider to identify the applicable category in writing if your receipts regularly cross the small-merchant threshold or include high-value invoices.
“MDR is a charge within the merchant payment ecosystem. It is not a charge on customers making UPI payments.” — Ministry of Finance, Government of India, 2026.
Customers do not pay MDR, and the same release says providers may not impose hidden platform fees. That does not eliminate every possible business cost. A provider can have a separately disclosed technology fee, gateway charge, card-acquiring fee, device rental, replacement charge or optional service. Razorpay’s 2% platform or technology fee plus GST is an example of a disclosed gateway charge that sits alongside zero bank MDR for standard bank-to-bank UPI.
Transaction volumes are large but vary by month. A separate Ministry of Finance release reports 2,366 crore UPI transactions worth ₹29.9 lakh crore for July 2026 and says UPI was live in 11 foreign countries. Those are July activity figures, not a permanent monthly average or a forecast for an individual shop.
How to decide by shop size and payment pattern
Small neighborhood shop with low monthly UPI receipts
Start with Google Pay for Business if the connected account and bank accept the arrangement and your receipts fit the stated individual-account guidance. Keep PhonePe merchant QR as an alternative when customers strongly prefer PhonePe. Your priority is a reliable QR, clear payment confirmation and a bank account that can receive the expected amount, not a paid checkout stack.

Busy shop with customers using many different apps
Prioritize an interoperable QR such as the one described in BharatPe’s official listing. Test it with several commonly used apps before opening the counter and keep the merchant name, amount and status visible during each test. A single code reduces visual clutter, but you still need a daily process for matching transactions to bills.
Shop that loses sales when customers lack cash
Consider BharatSwipe or another approved card facility in addition to UPI. Card acceptance introduces a device, card-network rules and potentially different settlement timing, so compare the full cost with the value of recovering otherwise-lost sales. Do not assume that a UPI QR automatically accepts cards.
Retailer taking orders through messages or a website
Use a gateway such as Razorpay when customers need a payment link, invoice or checkout page. Keep the in-store QR with a low-cost merchant provider if that is cheaper for counter sales; there is no requirement to force online and offline payments through the same provider.
Onboarding checklist: set up a merchant QR safely
Provider screens differ, but the following sequence prevents most avoidable problems.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Choose the receiving account. Use a bank account permitted for the business type you are registering. Confirm the account holder name, branch details and mobile number before beginning KYC.
- Collect current KYC documents. Have the identity, address, business and bank documents requested by the provider. A personal account may have different limits from a current or business account.
- Register the legal merchant name. Enter the name customers recognize while keeping the legal details accurate. Check how that name will appear on the payer’s confirmation screen.
- Complete verification inside the official app or site. Do not send KYC documents to an unverified agent or install an APK supplied through an unsolicited message.
- Confirm the QR destination. After approval, make a small test payment from another UPI account. Match the displayed merchant name and verify that the credit reaches the intended bank account.
- Test more than one app. If interoperability is important, scan the code with several major UPI apps and record whether each payment succeeds, the amount is correct and the merchant receives an immediate notification.
- Set a reconciliation routine. At closing time, compare the provider’s transaction list with the day’s bills and bank credits. Record transaction IDs for disputed payments.
- Print only after approval. A QR image downloaded before the merchant account is activated can point to the wrong destination or be replaced during KYC. Use the final approved code.
Do you need a soundbox?
No. A soundbox is an optional notification device, not a requirement for accepting UPI. It can help when one employee is serving several customers and cannot keep checking a phone, but it introduces a subscription, rental, data, battery or replacement cost depending on the provider.
Best Value
- 【Elegant Design】The sign adopts a standing design, which is easy to move and place. The size reaches 3.9*5.5 inches, which is very eye-catching. The material is high-end plastic material, which highlights the high-end of your brand. The design of large NFC coil and QR code allows users to enter your shop page more smoothly to follow you.
- 【Win More Followers】More followers means higher SEO and more sales while attracting new customers. Our eye-catching stands are perfect for local businesses, shops, restaurants, offices or any type of business that is looking to improve their online presence.
- 【No Monthly Fees】Our products are purchased once and used forever. No subscription or monthly payments are required. Products can be tapped and scanned by customers an unlimited number of times.
- 【No App, Easy Setup】You don't need to download any App, you can easily set up the sign on our website, and it can be set up in a few minutes. And our backend provides the service of changing the settings at any time.
- 【Data Statistics】You can view the data of a single stand or multiple stands through your backend. If you have multiple stores, you can also view the data of a single store or multiple stores. This makes it easier for you to analyze data and formulate business strategies.
Before ordering one, check whether the device announces the exact amount, works when the phone is offline, supports multiple staff members, has a return process and continues after a SIM or account change. Verify the current subscription and replacement terms with the provider; neither a free QR nor a no-fee commercial-payment statement proves that a soundbox has no charge.
Buying and displaying a QR standee
An acrylic, PVC or countertop QR standee is the most useful physical accessory for a counter. NPCI describes QR-based integration as a merchant feature for UPI transactions. Buy a blank or customizable standee and insert the QR supplied after the merchant account is approved.
The standee is only a display. It does not create a merchant account, perform KYC, route transactions or settle funds. Protect the printed code from glare, scratches and stickers that cover the pattern. Compare the merchant name shown after scanning with the name printed on the standee, and replace the standee immediately if the account or QR destination changes.
Settlement, reconciliation and customer support
Settlement speed
Do not treat “instant notification” as proof that the money has settled into the bank. A provider may show a successful transaction in its app before the bank credit appears, or it may batch settlements. Razorpay’s published gateway information describes settlement as typically T+1 or instant, while the cited PhonePe and Google material does not establish a universal settlement schedule. Confirm the schedule for your exact account and note weekends, bank holidays and failed reversals.
Reconciling a disputed payment
Ask the customer to show the UPI transaction status and transaction ID, not just a screenshot. Check the merchant app and bank statement, then wait for the provider’s stated reversal window before issuing a second refund. Keep the bill number, amount, date, time and UPI reference together so support can trace the payment.
Support and account access
Use the support channel attached to the verified merchant account. Save the merchant ID, registered mobile number and escalation reference. If a phone is lost, immediately block the SIM or sign out of the merchant application through the bank or provider’s recovery process; never share an OTP or UPI PIN with a caller claiming to be support.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Assuming every QR accepts every app: Ask whether the issued code is interoperable and test it before displaying it. A provider-branded code may have different acceptance rules from a universal QR.
- Confusing MDR with a gateway fee: Zero bank MDR does not cancel a separately disclosed technology or platform fee. Read the settlement statement and calculate the effective percentage including GST.
- Using a personal account for a growing business: A personal or individual current-account limit may be unsuitable once receipts rise. Ask the bank about the correct account and KYC category before the limit is reached.
- Buying a soundbox before checking recurring costs: Request the current rental, subscription, replacement and cancellation terms in writing.
- Accepting a screenshot as payment: Confirm success in the merchant app or bank account and record the transaction ID.
- Printing the QR from an untrusted source: Download it from the verified provider account, inspect the merchant name after scanning and remove old codes from the counter.
- Routing all payments through an online gateway: A gateway’s technology fee can make ordinary counter payments more expensive. Use online tools where links, invoices or checkout solve a real need.
- Assuming a promoted financial product is part of QR acceptance: Evaluate loans, investments, card devices and other products separately, with their own terms and costs.
A practical decision rule
Pick BharatPe for Business when broad app acceptance and optional cards matter most. Pick Google Pay for Business when the shop is small, the bank account is eligible and receipts fit the stated individual-account guidance. Pick PhonePe merchant QR when a direct, familiar counter QR is the priority and you are willing to verify current merchant pricing and hardware terms. Pick Razorpay only when online collection features justify a gateway’s platform fee.

Whichever provider you choose, complete KYC first, test the final QR with more than one app, confirm the settlement path and display the code in a tamper-resistant standee. Recheck the provider’s terms whenever your account type, monthly volume or payment mix changes.
