Shared hosting is a poor fit. Paperclip needs a supported Node.js runtime, pnpm for source installs, server-level process control and normally SSH access. A VPS or a platform service that exposes equivalent controls is the appropriate category.

For most first deployments, the 2-vCPU, 4-GB, 50-GB tier is the sensible compromise. It gives the operating system, Paperclip, PostgreSQL and a modest number of agent processes room to coexist. Choose the 1-vCPU, 2-GB tier only when you are intentionally testing or when agents execute elsewhere and the server carries mostly the Paperclip control plane.
Paperclip AI requirements you must verify
Node.js version
Plan for Node.js 24.11.0 or newer. This is the requirement stated in the official installation material and should take precedence over older third-party articles that mention Node 18, 20 or 22. The official CLI documentation says an npx installation or server started on Node 22 or 23 prints an unsupported-version warning and continues. A warning means the process continued; it does not make that runtime supported.
There is a notable installation inconsistency: the NodeSource command shown in the official guide installs a 20.x repository even though the same guidance requires Node 24 or later. After following any installation command, check the binary actually being used:
node -vDo not proceed until the output is at least v24.11.0. If the shell still resolves an older system binary, remove or disable that binary, install the supported release using the current Paperclip instructions and open a new shell before checking again.

PostgreSQL
Running paperclipai run can create an embedded PostgreSQL instance automatically. That is convenient for a single server or a trial. You can instead provide a connection string for a separately managed database.
Plan around PostgreSQL 17 for a production deployment. Several deployment references specify PostgreSQL 17, and one platform template bundles it. Paperclip’s Drizzle ORM is not documented as supporting MySQL or MariaDB, so do not substitute either database engine. A third-party reference mentions PostgreSQL 16 or newer, but PostgreSQL 17 is the safer planning target when you control the database version.
Model-provider credentials
At least one Anthropic or OpenAI API key is needed for agents to run. Store keys as protected environment variables or secrets, never in a repository, shell history or a public configuration file. Hosting charges and model API charges are separate budgets.
Network and access prerequisites
You need SSH access to a Linux VPS and a registered domain name for a normal internet-facing setup. Put the application behind HTTPS and require authentication for every user. A domain and certificate are not optional details when the control plane is reachable from the public internet.

- Connect over SSH and update the system. Use a non-root administrative account with sudo, apply security updates and configure the provider firewall before exposing application ports.
- Check resources before installing. Run
nproc,free -handdf -h. Confirm that the available memory and disk match the tier you selected; a plan advertised with 4 GB can show less free memory after the operating system starts. - Install and verify Node.js. Follow the current Paperclip instructions, then run
node -v. The result must be 24.11.0 or newer. Pay particular attention to the NodeSource inconsistency described above. - Install and verify pnpm. Use the supported pnpm installation method, then run
pnpm --version. Keep the version in your deployment notes. - Install Paperclip. Use the documented npx path for a quick deployment or the documented source path when you need a checked-out project. Avoid copying commands from an older guide that assumes Node 20 or 22.

Watch the console for database and port errors rather than assuming a successful process launch means the service is ready. - Choose database placement. Keep embedded PostgreSQL for a low-risk single-server test. For production, create a PostgreSQL 17 database with persistent storage and pass its connection string through the supported configuration mechanism.
- Configure model keys as secrets. Add at least one Anthropic or OpenAI key to the server’s secret store or protected environment. Restrict file permissions if a local environment file is used.
- Attach the domain and HTTPS. Point DNS at the VPS, terminate TLS at a maintained reverse proxy and forward only the required internal application port. Require authenticated access before inviting other users.
- Make the service persistent. Run Paperclip under the process supervisor recommended by your distribution or deployment method so it restarts after a reboot. Test a controlled restart before declaring the installation complete.
- Take and test backups. Back up the PostgreSQL data and Paperclip configuration. Virtarix specifically recommends establishing a backup and restore routine before production changes; a backup that has never been restored is not a recovery plan.
Docker deployments
Docker Compose
DeployHQ documents a Docker Compose approach with a PostgreSQL 17 container and an authenticated production mode. This is useful when you want the application and database versions expressed as deployable configuration rather than installed directly on the host.
- Use persistent volumes for PostgreSQL and any Paperclip data that must survive container replacement.
- Keep the database network private; publish only the reverse proxy or application endpoint that users need.
- Set the documented authenticated production mode instead of leaving a development configuration internet-facing.
- Pin image versions and record the upgrade and rollback procedure.
Docker does not remove the need to size the host. Containers still consume the VPS’s CPU, memory and disk, and database volumes need their own backup policy.
Sizing for multiple agents
Agent count alone is not enough to predict resource use. The critical variables are how many sessions wake in the same time window, whether an adapter starts a local CLI process, how much context each process retains and whether the model work is executed on the VPS or through remote HTTP webhooks.

When agents run locally
Reserve memory for every local session that can be active concurrently, plus PostgreSQL, the Paperclip process and the operating system. A server that handles one idle agent comfortably can run out of memory when several sessions wake together. Swap can prevent an immediate crash, but it is not a substitute for RAM; sustained swapping makes agent response times unpredictable.

When agents are remote HTTP webhooks
If every adapter calls agents running elsewhere, the VPS may carry only Paperclip and PostgreSQL. SSD Nodes describes this architecture as materially lighter than running local agent workloads. In that case, prioritize reliable network connectivity, database storage and backups over adding CPU for inference that never occurs on the server.
About the 20-agent figure
Contabo’s 8-vCPU, 16-GB RAM and 200-GB NVMe recommendation is a useful upper planning point for roughly 20 concurrent agents, but it is not a benchmark and does not define a guaranteed concurrency limit. Treat it as a starting quote request: test your own adapters, session sizes and peak schedule, then resize based on observed CPU, memory, disk and database latency.
Security controls for an internet-facing instance
- HTTPS: Use a valid certificate for the domain and redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS.
- Authentication: Enable the documented authenticated deployment mode and require login for every user.
- SSH: Use key-based access, disable unnecessary password login and restrict SSH at the firewall where practical.
- Least privilege: Run the application as a dedicated user rather than root, and keep database credentials out of source control.
- Updates: Patch the operating system, Node.js, Paperclip and container images on a schedule. Test upgrades against a backup or staging instance first.
- Backups: Keep encrypted, off-server copies of PostgreSQL and configuration, with a documented restore test.
- Monitoring: Alert on memory pressure, disk usage, failed restarts, database connection errors and certificate expiry.
One deployment guide reports an application listener on 127.0.0.1:3100 behind a reverse proxy. That port binding was not verified against the official documentation, so confirm the listener and port in the release you install rather than hard-coding this value.
