There is no single best Palworld server host for every group. For most players who want a server online quickly, a managed provider is the simpler choice; the best plan depends on your player count, region, platforms, backup needs, mod policy and renewal price. If you are comfortable administering a machine, self-hosting gives you direct control and can be the better long-term value. Pocketpair’s version 0.5.0 server guidance recommends 4 CPU cores and 16 GB of memory, with more than 32 GB recommended for larger servers.

The short answer: which hosting path fits you?

Choose a managed host when you want a control panel, provider-maintained updates, automated backups and support without configuring a public server yourself. Choose self-hosting when you already have a suitable Windows or Linux machine, can expose the server to the internet, and are willing to handle updates, security, backups and troubleshooting.

Situation Most suitable path Why
Small group that wants to play tonight Managed hosting Provisioning, networking and routine maintenance are handled through the provider’s panel.
Players spread across several platforms A host with explicitly advertised crossplay for those platforms Crossplay support is not identical between providers; verify every platform in your group before paying.
Large community or heavily customized server Managed plan with sufficient resources, or self-hosting on a dedicated machine Slot limits alone do not guarantee performance. You need enough CPU, memory and storage throughput.
Technical user with reliable hardware and internet Self-hosting You control files, configuration, upgrades and migration, but you also own every operational task.
Players who require Palworld mods Only a provider that explicitly allows the required mods, or self-hosting Policies differ. For example, Nitrado’s Palworld FAQ says its servers do not offer Palworld mod support.

The prices and features below are snapshots of provider pages reviewed on October 13, 2026. They are not independent performance tests. Currency, locations, taxes, introductory offers and renewal terms can change, so confirm the checkout total and recurring price before ordering.

Managed Palworld hosting compared

Managed hosting normally gives you a rented game-server instance, a web control panel and some combination of backups, file access, support and DDoS protection. The practical differences are capacity, location, platform compatibility and how easily you can recover or move your save.

What these plans do—and do not—tell you

A monthly headline price is not a complete value comparison. The examples use different currencies, billing periods, slot counts and advertised features. A plan with more slots may have a higher price without disclosing more CPU capacity, while a lower slot count may be adequate for a private group. Treat the provider’s memory figure as a published plan specification, not as a benchmarked guarantee.

Before ordering, check the location nearest the majority of your players, the exact platforms supported by crossplay, whether backups can be downloaded, how long backups are retained, and whether you can restore a single save or only roll back the entire server. Confirm whether SFTP or another file-transfer method is included if you expect to edit configuration files or migrate later.

How to choose a host without overpaying

1. Count simultaneous players, not the size of your community

Plan for the maximum number of people who will be connected at the same time, plus occasional peaks. A 10-player plan can fit a regular group of eight even if your community has dozens of members. Do not buy a 32-slot plan solely because the larger number sounds safer; ask what CPU and memory are allocated and whether the provider publishes any practical limits.

2. Put the data center near the players

Distance affects latency. Select a location near the largest concentration of players, then test actual latency after deployment. “Global locations” is a broad availability claim, not a promise that every city or country is offered for every plan.

3. Verify crossplay platform by platform

Crossplay is a purchase requirement when a group mixes devices. GPORTAL advertises private-server crossplay for PC, Mac, PlayStation and Xbox. Nitrado advertises crossplay as well. Those statements do not prove that every game build, region or platform combination works identically, so verify the exact combination you need on the current plan page.

4. Treat backups as a recovery feature, not a badge

Ask four separate questions: how often is a backup made, how many versions are retained, can you download it, and can you restore it yourself? “Automated backups” answers only the first part of the problem. A provider’s stated backup space, such as GPORTAL’s advertised 50 GB, also does not describe retention or restore workflow by itself.

5. Check file access and migration rights

SFTP or equivalent access lets you copy saves and configuration files, inspect logs and keep an independent archive. If a provider does not offer file access, find out how you would export your world before committing to a long billing period. This is especially important if you may move from managed hosting to a self-hosted machine.

6. Read the mod policy before installing anything

Do not assume that a general-purpose control panel accepts Palworld mods. Nitrado’s published FAQ explicitly says Palworld mod support is not offered on its servers. If mods are essential, obtain written confirmation that the specific mods and installation method are allowed, or plan to self-host.

7. Compare recurring cost, not only the first payment

Record the currency, billing interval, tax treatment, renewal price, cancellation rules and refund window. The Nitrado figures above are 30-day subscriptions on a UK page; the other examples use US-dollar monthly or 30-day prices. Converting currencies without including taxes or renewal changes can make an apparently cheaper plan more expensive over a year.

Managed hosting: a practical setup checklist

  1. List your requirements. Write down the maximum simultaneous players, each platform in the group, preferred region, whether mods are required, and whether you need downloadable backups.
  2. Compare the current plan pages. Check slot count, provider-disclosed memory, location choices, crossplay wording, backup retention, file access, support hours and renewal pricing.
  3. Select the closest location. Favor the region that minimizes latency for most players rather than choosing a distant location solely because it is cheaper.
  4. Provision the server and record access details. Save the panel address, server identifier and recovery information in a secure place. Do not post credentials in a public Discord channel.
  5. Configure before inviting everyone. Set the world name, password and gameplay options, then start the server with one or two test players from each relevant platform.
  6. Test recovery. Create a manual backup if the panel supports it, download a copy when possible, and confirm where the restore control is located. A backup you have never restored is an assumption, not a tested recovery plan.
  7. Monitor the first busy session. Watch console messages, memory usage if exposed, disconnects and save times. If the server struggles below its advertised slot limit, open a support ticket with timestamps and logs.

Self-hosting requirements from Pocketpair

Pocketpair’s Palworld Server Guide, version 0.5.0, documents dedicated-server deployment on 64-bit Windows and 64-bit Linux using Steam or SteamCMD. The guide recommends at least 4 CPU cores and 16 GB of memory. It recommends more than 32 GB for larger servers. An 8 GB system may boot, but the guide warns that it has a greater possibility of out-of-memory crashes.

Component Official guidance Practical implication
Operating system Windows 64-bit or Linux 64-bit Use a supported 64-bit operating system and keep it patched.
CPU 4 CPU cores recommended Reserve these cores for the server; other workloads reduce headroom.
Memory 16 GB recommended; more than 32 GB for larger servers Memory demand grows with world activity and player count. An 8 GB machine may crash from lack of memory.
Storage Faster SSD storage recommended Pocketpair warns that low-performance storage may corrupt saved data.
Network UDP 8211 is the default, changeable port Allow the selected UDP port through the host firewall and router, and avoid conflicts with another service.

“Low-performance storage may corrupt saved data.” — Pocketpair, Palworld Server Guide, Requirements page.

The memory figures are recommendations, not a promise that every world will behave identically. Player count, world activity, operating-system overhead and other services on the machine all affect available headroom. A dedicated machine is safer than running the game server beside unrelated workloads.

Self-hosting deployment paths

Steam installation

Pocketpair documents downloading the dedicated server through Steam’s library. This route is familiar if you already manage Steam installations, but it still leaves networking, updates, process supervision and backups to you.

  1. Install the current 64-bit Windows or Linux system and update it.
  2. Install the Palworld dedicated server through Steam as described in Pocketpair’s current guide.
  3. Choose a fast SSD-backed directory for the server files and save data.
  4. Set a fixed local address for the machine, then forward UDP 8211 on the router unless you deliberately changed the port.
  5. Allow the server executable and selected port through the operating-system firewall.
  6. Start the dedicated server, connect locally first, then test from an external network.
  7. Schedule updates and copy the save directory to separate storage before major changes.

SteamCMD installation

The SteamCMD path is suited to a headless Linux machine or an administrator who wants scripted deployment. Pocketpair’s guide supplies the SteamCMD app-update command and startup procedure; use the command from the guide version that matches your game build rather than copying an outdated snippet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install SteamCMD on a supported 64-bit Windows or Linux host.
  2. Create a dedicated system user and a separate directory for server files and saves.
  3. Run Pocketpair’s documented app-update command to download or update the dedicated server.
  4. Configure the selected UDP port, firewall rule and router forwarding.
  5. Run the documented startup command under a service manager or persistent terminal session so an SSH disconnect does not stop the server.
  6. Test joining from inside and outside the local network.
  7. Automate updates only after taking a verified save backup, because an update can expose configuration or compatibility issues.

Docker

Pocketpair maintains an official Docker repository with an image and sample Compose files. The Compose file is a sample to adapt and verify, not a universal production configuration. Pocketpair does not recommend Docker Desktop on Windows or macOS because limited disk read/write speeds can affect the server.

  1. Use a Linux host with fast storage when possible.
  2. Review the official image documentation and adapt the sample Compose file to your paths, port and environment settings.
  3. Persist the save and configuration directories on the host so recreating the container does not erase the world.
  4. Publish the selected UDP port and verify firewall and router rules.
  5. Start the container, inspect logs for a successful boot and connect with a test client.
  6. Back up the persistent data directory before changing the image or Compose configuration.

Crossplay, configuration and backups

Pocketpair’s official configuration reference exposes crossplay-platform settings and backup-save controls, among other options. Because the reference result is unversioned while the hardware guide is identified as version 0.5.0, check the configuration reference that matches your current game build. A setting name or behavior can change between builds.

Managed panels may expose only a subset of the official settings. If a control is missing, determine whether the provider supports editing the underlying configuration file or whether the option is intentionally restricted. Keep a copy of your known-good configuration with your save backup so you can reproduce the server after migration.

For self-hosting, use at least two backup destinations: a local copy that allows quick rollback and an offline or separate-system copy that survives disk failure or ransomware. Back up before updates, mod changes and configuration experiments. Test restoration on a second directory or machine instead of overwriting your only working save.

Common failure modes and fixes

The server starts, then crashes from memory pressure

Check whether the host has only 8 GB, whether other programs are consuming memory, and whether the player count or world activity has grown. Move to the recommended 16 GB baseline, close unrelated workloads and consider more than 32 GB for a larger server. Review logs before increasing the slot limit.

Players cannot connect from outside the home network

Confirm that the server is listening on the selected UDP port, the operating-system firewall allows it, and the router forwards the same port to the machine’s current local address. If you changed the default 8211 port, every connection and firewall rule must use the new value. Carrier-grade NAT from an internet provider can prevent inbound forwarding; a managed host avoids that specific limitation.

Save data disappears after a container or host restart

Verify that the save directory is persistent and is not inside a temporary container layer. Restore a known backup before inviting players back, then test a restart and confirm that new progress remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players on different platforms cannot join

Check the exact platform combination against the provider’s current crossplay statement and confirm that every client is on a compatible game build. A generic “crossplay” label does not establish support for every platform pair.

A mod fails to load on a managed server

Read the provider’s Palworld-specific mod policy. If mods are prohibited, remove them rather than repeatedly changing files. Use a provider that explicitly allows the required installation or move the world to self-hosting after making a verified backup.

World data becomes corrupted or saves take unusually long

Review storage performance and free space. Pocketpair specifically warns that low-performance storage may corrupt saved data. Replace slow or failing storage, stop the server cleanly and restore the newest known-good backup.

Recommendations by player profile

Small vanilla group on mixed platforms

Start with a managed plan that explicitly supports every platform your friends use. Compare the 10- to 12-slot examples, location and backup workflow rather than choosing by the lowest converted currency price. Test crossplay before extending the subscription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Twenty-player community

Compare plans around 20 slots, then check whether the provider discloses enough memory and CPU for your activity level. The 8 GB, 20-player Shockbyte example and the 20-slot Nitrado UK example are price references, not proof that either will outperform the other. Ask support about upgrade paths before launch.

Thirty-two-player or highly active server

Use a plan designed for the intended peak, such as the 32-slot examples, but treat the slot number as a cap. For sustained activity, a self-hosted machine with the recommended memory and fast SSD can provide more control. More than 32 GB is the official recommendation for larger self-hosted servers.

Mod-focused group

Begin with the mod policy, not the price table. If the required mods are not supported by a managed provider, self-hosting is the predictable route, provided you can maintain the machine and keep independent backups.

Administrator who wants maximum control

Self-host on 64-bit Linux or Windows, use SteamCMD or the documented Steam path, expose only the required UDP port, run the process under a service manager and maintain tested backups. Docker can simplify repeatable deployment on Linux, but adapt Pocketpair’s sample Compose configuration and avoid Docker Desktop on Windows or macOS because of the documented disk I/O concern.

What is not established by the available specifications

The listed pages do not provide an independent, market-wide benchmark of Palworld hosts, a standardized latency test, or a universal player-to-memory formula. Provider feature lists therefore should be read as claims about what each service offers, not as laboratory measurements. Actual performance depends on location, contention, game version, world activity and configuration.

Recheck Pocketpair’s current requirements and configuration documentation, then verify every provider’s plan, location, renewal price, crossplay statement, backup policy and mod rules immediately before purchase. Those details are volatile, while your save and the time required to move it are not.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
