For most listeners, start with the Sony WH-CH720N. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 buyer guide names it an affordable active-noise-cancelling over-ear pick below $150, citing energetic sound, comfortable fit, useful office-noise reduction and a stated 50-hour battery life. It does not fold and has no included case, however.

Choose the JBL Tune 770NC instead if a foldable frame, softer ear-pad feel and longer battery life matter more than the best reported fit and isolation. JBL’s US listing showed $149.95 when checked, while the Soundcore Space One is the lower-price option at $99.99 on Soundcore’s US collection. These are US prices and can change; verify the live listing before ordering.

Best over-ear headphones under $150 at a glance

This guide assumes a US buyer and uses product information and reviews available on October 13, 2026. There was no physical testing for this article, so performance descriptions are attributed to the cited publications or manufacturers rather than presented as firsthand results.

Why the Sony WH-CH720N is the default recommendation

The Sony is the safest starting point when your requirements are broad: over-ear construction, active noise cancellation, everyday comfort and a price target below $150. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide describes its sound as energetic and its fit as comfortable, while calling the ANC effective against office background noise. That combination addresses the most common use case—music, video and calls in a shared room—without requiring you to optimize for one unusual feature.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What the ANC can and cannot do

Office noise reduction is the important qualification. The Sony can reduce steady background sound, but What Hi-Fi? says it does not create the near-silence associated with more expensive flagship headphones. Voices, sudden sounds and close mechanical noise can remain audible. Treat ANC as a way to lower distraction, not as hearing protection or a guarantee of silence.

Comfort and ear-cup fit

RTINGS reports that the Sony fits more people’s ears than the JBL in its comparison. That does not make the Sony universally comfortable: head shape, glasses, hair and preferred clamping pressure all affect the seal. A good seal improves bass response and passive isolation, so comfort and sound are linked rather than separate buying criteria.

Portability compromises

The WH-CH720N does not fold down and does not include a travel case. It is therefore better suited to a desk, home or backpack where you can protect it yourself than to a tightly packed carry-on. If you travel frequently, budget for a compatible case and confirm its dimensions before buying; the missing case is a product limitation, not an included accessory.

Battery claim and evidence level

What Hi-Fi? lists 50 hours of battery life. That is a reported product figure in its 2026 guide, not an independently reproduced measurement from this article. Actual runtime varies with ANC, volume, codec and calling, so use the number to compare the manufacturer’s endurance claim rather than to promise a fixed number of listening hours.

When the JBL Tune 770NC is the better choice

The JBL is the deliberate alternative for buyers who value physical convenience and padding feel. RTINGS reports softer ear pads and longer battery life than the Sony, while its comparison favors the Sony for fit and overall isolation. JBL’s official US page listed the Tune 770NC at $149.95 when checked, placing it at the top of this budget rather than clearly below it.

Foldability for commuting and travel

The Tune 770NC folds, making it easier to put in a small bag than the non-folding Sony. Folding does not remove the need for protection: use a case or a dedicated compartment so the hinges and ear cups are not crushed. The foldable design is a practical advantage for commuters even when audio performance is not the deciding factor.

Softer pads, different seal

RTINGS’ softer-padding observation may matter if firm cushions become uncomfortable during long sessions. Softer material can also change how the ear cups seal around glasses or larger ears. Because the same review gives Sony the fit and isolation advantage overall, try the JBL with your usual eyewear and return it if the seal feels loose or pressure develops.

Adaptive ANC, ambient modes and EQ

JBL lists adaptive ANC, ambient listening modes and equalizer controls in its app. Those features let you switch between reducing outside sound, hearing surroundings and adjusting tonal balance instead of relying on one fixed tuning. The official page says LE Audio is to be made available through a later over-the-air update. Do not assume every unit has that feature enabled on day one; check the firmware and app status after setup.

JBL’s sound description

JBL describes the headphones as having “renowned JBL Pure Bass sound—the same that powers the most famous music venues all around the world.” That is JBL’s marketing statement, not an independent measurement or proof that it sounds better than the Sony or Soundcore.

Where the Soundcore Space One fits

Soundcore’s US collection listed the Space One at $99.99 when checked, making it the clear lower-price entry among these three examples. The available evidence identifies it as an ANC over-ear option but does not provide a sufficiently detailed independent head-to-head comparison with the Sony and JBL.

Buy it for the price, not an unproven performance lead

If spending less is the overriding requirement, the Space One is the logical model to investigate first. The lower listing price leaves room in the budget for a case or replacement pads. There is not enough evidence here to call it the best-sounding, best-isolating or most comfortable model, so those decisions should wait until you can read a detailed independent review or try the fit yourself.

Questions to answer before checkout

  • Does the retailer offer a return window long enough for several listening sessions?
  • Are replacement or compatible cases available for the exact Space One version?
  • Does the current listing describe the same regional model and included accessories?
  • Is the lower price still available after shipping and tax?

Sound, ANC and comfort: how to choose between them

If you work in an office

Choose the Sony as the starting point because its reported ANC performance specifically targets office background noise and its fit is favored in the RTINGS comparison. Expect a reduction in steady hum and chatter, not total silence. If you need to hear colleagues quickly, the JBL’s ambient modes are a reason to consider it instead.

If you commute or fly

Prioritize the JBL’s folding frame if bag space is scarce. The Sony’s lack of a case and non-folding construction add friction every time you pack it. Neither model should be treated as a substitute for hearing protection in loud workplaces or on aircraft.

If you wear glasses or have larger ears

Do not infer comfort from a specification sheet. The Sony’s broader fit success in RTINGS’ comparison is encouraging, while the JBL’s softer pads may feel better on your skin. The seal around your glasses and whether your ears touch the driver housing are decisive; test both if a retailer permits returns.

If you want to tune the sound

The JBL explicitly advertises app EQ, giving you a documented way to adjust its tonal balance. Sony also provides app-based controls as part of its product experience, but the supplied evidence does not establish identical EQ controls or presets between the two. Confirm the current app features for your phone’s operating system before buying for a specific adjustment.

Battery expectations

The only exact endurance figure established here is Sony’s reported 50-hour claim. RTINGS says the JBL lasts longer than the Sony, but no exact comparative number is established in the available material. Soundcore’s Space One battery figure is likewise not established here. Use the published figures on the live product pages if runtime is your deciding criterion, and remember that ANC and calls generally change real-world endurance.

Analog listening

The Sony and JBL both support analog connectivity according to the comparison material. That can be useful with an in-flight entertainment system, a laptop whose battery is low or a device that does not support your preferred Bluetooth setup. Confirm whether the required cable is included and whether the headphones operate passively when powered off before relying on that workflow; those accessory and behavior details are not established in the available evidence.

Calls and microphones

None of the supplied sources establishes a measured microphone winner. If calls are central to your purchase, check independent voice samples and the retailer’s return policy, then test from the locations where you actually work. A headphone that sounds excellent for music can still transmit keyboard noise or room echo on a call.

Price, stock and return-policy checklist

Prices and inventory move independently of review scores. JBL’s $149.95 and Soundcore’s $99.99 are US listings observed on October 13, 2026, not guaranteed prices. Sony’s current price was not established by an official retailer source in the available material, so verify it before describing the WH-CH720N as under $150.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the seller’s live US listing and confirm the exact model name.
  2. Check the delivered total, including shipping and tax, against your $150 ceiling.
  3. Read the return window and restocking terms before opening the package.
  4. Confirm warranty coverage for your region and keep the receipt.
  5. Check the box contents, especially a cable and case, rather than assuming an accessory is included.
  6. Test comfort, seal, ANC modes, Bluetooth stability and calls during the return period.

A practical decision guide

Choose Sony WH-CH720N when

  • You want the strongest all-round recommendation supported by the current guide coverage.
  • Comfort and a fit that works for more ear shapes are more important than folding.
  • Your main noise problem is steady office background sound.
  • You can live without an included case and will verify the current price first.

Choose JBL Tune 770NC when

  • You need a foldable headphone for a commute or travel bag.
  • Softer padding is likely to be more comfortable for long sessions.
  • You value the longer reported battery life over Sony’s fit and isolation advantage.
  • You want adaptive ANC, ambient modes and app EQ, while understanding that LE Audio depends on a later update.

Choose Soundcore Space One when

  • The lower listed purchase price is your primary constraint.
  • You are willing to verify comfort and performance yourself rather than relying on a proven head-to-head result.
  • You have checked the current listing, accessories, warranty and return terms.

How to test a pair during the return window

  1. Check the seal. Wear the headphones with your normal glasses, hairstyle and ear position. Listen for bass thinning when you move your jaw; that can indicate a broken seal.
  2. Test passive comfort first. Wear them for 30 minutes without music. Note heat, clamp pressure, ear contact and whether the headband creates a sore spot.
  3. Compare ANC in realistic noise. Use a fan, air conditioner or office recording at a safe volume. Switch ANC off and on so you judge the reduction rather than the absolute silence.
  4. Try ambient mode before leaving home. Confirm that speech and traffic cues are audible enough for your routine, but never use headphones as a replacement for situational awareness.
  5. Make a call. Record a short sample in a quiet room and a normal workspace, then ask the other person whether your voice remains clear.
  6. Check packing practicality. Fold the JBL repeatedly if you choose it, or test how the non-folding Sony fits in your bag with a protective case.
  7. Decide before the deadline. Keep the receipt and return the model that causes pressure, loses its seal or fails your call and travel needs; specifications cannot predict individual comfort.

Bottom line

The Sony WH-CH720N is the best first choice for a general listener seeking comfortable over-ear ANC below $150, provided its current price fits the budget and you accept the non-folding design and missing case. The JBL Tune 770NC is the more practical travel alternative for foldability, softer pads and longer reported battery life, with Sony retaining the reported fit and isolation edge. The Soundcore Space One is the value-led option at a listed $99.99, but the available evidence supports choosing it for price rather than claiming a performance victory.
