The right over-ear headphones depend on where and how you listen: noise-cancelling wireless models suit travel and calls, while wired open-back pairs are built for quiet-room listening. For a premium wireless all-rounder, What Hi-Fi recommends the Sony WH-1000XM6; RTINGS highlights fit and microphone trade-offs against the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). For home listening, RTINGS recommends the Sennheiser HD 800 S, with the caveat that its open design leaks sound and may need amplification.
Which over-ear headphones suit your use?
Over-ear cups surround and cover the ears. What Hi-Fi notes that this style offers a broad choice and can provide more isolated, immersive listening than on-ear headphones, though its bulk and isolation make it generally unsuitable for running and some outdoor exercise. “Best” is not a single sound-quality ranking: travel, calls, quiet-room listening and studio work reward different features.
| Use | Shortlist | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Travel, commuting and calls | Sony WH-1000XM6 | What Hi-Fi praises its sound, noise cancellation and calls. RTINGS notes shallow ear pads may bother some users and says its microphone system is worse than Bose’s. |
| Wireless comfort and noise cancellation | Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | RTINGS says the headband and earpads are more generously padded than Sony’s, but the headphones cannot be used passively. |
| Less expensive wireless ANC | JBL Live 780NC | RTINGS positions it as a cheaper Sony alternative, with ANC close to Sony’s but a firmer clamp, limited padding and shallow cups. |
| Quiet-room, open-back listening | Sennheiser HD 800 S | RTINGS praises its spaciousness, comfort and midrange accuracy; account for low-bass performance, sound leakage, price and possible amplification needs. |
| Open-back wired alternative | HiFiMan Arya Stealth Magnet Version | RTINGS says it costs less than the HD 800 S and has more low-bass thump, but a less open, speaker-like sense of space. |
| Wired everyday or studio candidate | Røde NTH-100 | What Hi-Fi names it its overall best wired pick and describes it as capable and well made. Consult its review for more detailed fit and sound information. |
| Premium wired candidate | Beyerdynamic T1 (3rd Generation) | What Hi-Fi includes it among its wired picks as a top-class option. Its guide shows a high price; check a current local listing before buying. |
These recommendations come from different review processes, not a shared standardized test. What Hi-Fi describes comparative listening tests with price-appropriate DACs for wired models and real-world settings for wireless noise-cancelling headphones. RTINGS says its wired guide draws on testing more than 910 pairs across its broader headphone program and notes that price, visitor feedback and availability inform its picks. Use the attributed verdicts as starting points, then judge fit and features against your own needs.

Sony WH-1000XM6: premium all-rounder
What Hi-Fi’s 2026 guide lists the WH-1000XM6 at 30 hours of battery life and 254 g, and specifies ANC, transparency mode, Bluetooth 5.3, SBC/AAC/LDAC/LC3 codec support, multipoint and USB-C charging. These are the guide’s published specifications, accessed October 7, 2026, rather than independently verified figures here. What Hi-Fi also notes that the model lacks aptX HD and does not provide audio over USB-C.
#1 Best Overall
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
For travel, the combination of wireless use and ANC is a natural fit; multipoint can help when switching among devices. Comfort and call quality deserve a personal check: RTINGS flags the shallow pads as a possible fit issue and says Bose has the better microphone system. What Hi-Fi’s positive sound, ANC and call verdict is its editorial assessment, not a guarantee that every listener will prefer the Sony.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): consider fit first
RTINGS describes the Bose as more generously padded at the headband and earpads than the Sony. That may matter if padding is a priority, but it does not settle comfort for every head or ear shape. RTINGS says the Bose cannot be used passively, so a depleted battery is a more consequential limitation than it is with a model that can still play over a cable without power.

- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
JBL Live 780NC: a less expensive ANC option
RTINGS positions the JBL as a cheaper alternative to the Sony, with noise cancellation close to Sony’s. Its trade-offs include a firmer clamp, limited padding and shallow cups; RTINGS also says it isolates some bass and midrange noise somewhat less effectively. Check the fit in person if possible, especially for long listening sessions.

Sennheiser HD 800 S: spacious sound for a quiet room
RTINGS praises the HD 800 S for spaciousness, comfort and midrange accuracy, making it a candidate for home listening or critical work in a quiet space. Its open-back construction leaks audio in both directions, so it is a poor match for a subway, shared office or anyone who needs to keep listening private. RTINGS also cautions about low-bass performance and price.

- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Check the source equipment before choosing it. RTINGS says buyers may need a powerful amplifier or audio interface to drive the HD 800 S, adding to the system cost. A headphone’s plug fitting a device does not by itself guarantee that the device can drive it to the volume and performance you want.
HiFiMan Arya Stealth Magnet Version: lower cost, different presentation
RTINGS says the Arya Stealth costs less than the HD 800 S and offers more low-bass thump, while sounding less open and speaker-like. That makes it an alternative to consider if you want an open-back wired model but prefer stronger low-end impact; it is not simply a less expensive version of the Sennheiser’s presentation.

Røde NTH-100 and Beyerdynamic T1 (3rd Generation)
What Hi-Fi names the Røde NTH-100 its overall best wired headphone and calls it capable and well made. Its guide also includes the Beyerdynamic T1 (3rd Generation) as a top-class option. Those brief descriptions do not establish how either model will fit you, what equipment it requires, or its current local price, so check the detailed reviews and seller specifications before deciding.
Wired or wireless: choose by constraint, not category
| Question | Wired is more compelling when… | Wireless is more compelling when… |
|---|---|---|
| Will you listen near other people? | A closed-back wired design can suit private listening, but open-back models such as the HD 800 S leak sound. | ANC and wireless convenience matter during travel or commuting; compare how well a specific model isolates noise. |
| Do you need playback without a battery? | RTINGS notes analog wired headphones commonly work passively, without battery power. | Check whether the particular model can play over a cable when off; RTINGS says the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) cannot be used passively. |
| Are latency and equipment important? | A wired connection can avoid wireless audio lag for studio use, but confirm connector compatibility and whether the device can drive the headphones. | Check supported codecs, device compatibility and battery life; wireless feature sets vary by model. |
| Do you need calls or device switching? | Confirm the wired model and connected device support your microphone and call setup. | Compare microphone quality and multipoint support rather than assuming all Bluetooth headphones behave alike. |
What to check before you buy
- Fit: Headband pressure, pad depth and ear-cup space affect long-session comfort. RTINGS specifically notes shallow pads on the Sony WH-1000XM6 and JBL Live 780NC.
- Sound and construction: Open-back designs trade privacy and isolation for a different listening presentation; closed-back and ANC models are more practical where sound leakage or outside noise matters.
- Power and connection: For wired headphones, check the plug or adapter needed by your source and whether it can drive the model. Some demanding headphones may benefit from an amplifier or audio interface.
- Wireless features: Confirm battery life, microphone performance, multipoint, ANC, transparency mode, codecs and charging connection against your devices and routine.
- Price and availability: Recommendations do not guarantee current stock or local pricing. The What Hi-Fi guide’s Sony offer is from a UK guide; do not treat it as a US or global price. Verify the exact model variant and local seller listing.
How to interpret these recommendations
What Hi-Fi says its reviewers spend weeks with each pair, testing wired headphones with price-appropriate DACs and wireless noise-cancelling over-ears in offices, city streets, public transport and sometimes planes; the guide says its review team agrees verdicts. RTINGS’ recommendations use a different process, and its guide cautions that personal taste and listening habits matter. Neither list is a universal scorecard, and these source-attributed recommendations are not claims of testing by this article’s author.
