For exercise-specific over-ear headphones, Beats 360 is the clearest match in the available evidence. Beats explicitly positions it for running, training and workouts, and lists IPX4 sweat and water resistance. It also offers active noise cancellation (ANC), independently rotating earcups, replaceable cushions and up to 32 hours of battery life. The trade-offs are a premium reported U.S. price of $349.99, no wear detection, no 3.5 mm input, no charger in the box, and noise cancellation that does not beat Bose or Sony in every comparison.

That recommendation needs an important qualification: most over-ear headphones are not designed to stay secure during vigorous training. Heat, sweat, head movement and possible warranty exclusions make over-ears a better fit for light-to-moderate exercise than for repeated jumping or all-out running. Use the guide below to match the design and protection level to your actual workouts.

Are over-ear headphones a good choice for exercise?

Over-ear headphones surround the ears instead of sitting in the ear canal. That can feel more comfortable for long, low-impact sessions, and the larger earcups can provide stronger passive isolation and room for substantial batteries. The same design can become a liability in a gym: a loose headband shifts when you move, sealed pads retain heat, and sweat can soak into cushions and nearby components.

RTINGS’ workout testing says many people prefer earbuds for sports, while some listeners choose over-ears for comfort during light or moderate exercise. It cautions that most over-ears are not engineered to remain secure through high-intensity movement. Sweat-resistance claims also vary by manufacturer and are not measured in a directly comparable way. An IP rating is a more standardized indication of water and dust protection, but it is not a guarantee that a headphone will survive every sweaty workout or that its ear pads are washable.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Light or moderate activity: walking, stationary cycling, weight training with controlled movement and stretching are the most compatible with over-ears.
  • High movement: sprinting, jumping, burpees and fast interval work demand unusually stable clamping and a design that will not bounce.
  • Outdoor awareness: if you need to hear traffic, cyclists or instructions, earbuds with an ambient mode or open-ear designs may be safer than strongly isolating over-ears.

Check the headphone warranty before deliberately using any model for exercise. Some manufacturers exclude liquid or perspiration damage even when a product is marketed as suitable for active use.

Best exercise-focused model: Beats 360

Beats’ official product page calls Beats 360 “the first over-ear Beats headphone with sweat and water resistance (IPX4 rating)” and says it is “built for running, training and working out.” That is a manufacturer claim, so treat it as the design intent rather than an independent durability test. The product page is available at Beats 360 — Sweat- and Water-Resistant Over-Ear Headphones.

What makes it suitable for workouts

  • IPX4 protection: resistance to water splashing from any direction, including sweat and splashes encountered during normal training. IPX4 is not waterproofing and does not make the headphones suitable for swimming or submersion.
  • Adjustable stainless-steel sliders: allow you to set the headband tension and height for a closer fit.
  • Independently rotating earcups: help the pads follow the sides of your head and can make packing the headphones easier.
  • ANC: reduces gym noise and other low-frequency background sound when you want to concentrate.
  • Interchangeable earcup and headband cushions: useful because pads are the parts most likely to absorb sweat and wear out.
  • Battery: Beats states up to 32 hours. Tom’s Guide also reported 32 hours with ANC and Spatial Audio enabled in its 2026 review.

Costs and limitations

Tom’s Guide reported a U.S. price of $349.99 in its 2026 review and listed replacement cushion sets at $49. Those are dated, market-specific review figures rather than guaranteed current prices, stock or retailer listings. Check the current manufacturer and retailer pages before buying.

The same review found no wear detection, so playback does not automatically pause when you remove the headphones. Beats 360 also omits a 3.5 mm audio jack and does not include a charger. Its noise cancellation was not class-leading in every comparison: Tom’s Guide found Bose more effective against plane-engine noise and noted that Sony’s compared model offered wear detection. Those observations describe that review’s comparisons, not a universal ranking of every Bose or Sony headphone.

How the leading alternatives differ

RTINGS’ guide, updated July 8, 2026, identifies alternatives for people who value comfort, stability, battery life or price more than a workout-specific manufacturer claim. The figures below are from that guide’s testing and should not be interpreted as guarantees for every unit or workout.

Model Why consider it Protection and stability Battery figure Main compromise
Beats 360 Most explicit workout positioning; ANC; replaceable cushions Manufacturer-listed IPX4; fit features intended for training Up to 32 hours stated by Beats; 32 hours with ANC and Spatial Audio reported by Tom’s Guide Premium reported U.S. price; no wear detection, 3.5 mm jack or charger
Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless Comfort, tactile controls and strong noise isolation Stable for most use, but RTINGS says it can shift during high-intensity movement; no exercise-specific IP rating stated 26 hours — RTINGS, 2026 Less suitable for very mobile training than its comfort suggests
Nothing Headphone (a) Long tested battery and better stability than the Bose during more mobile exercise IP52; RTINGS reports better stability than Bose in its workout comparisons 79.25 hours measured — RTINGS, 2026 Bose has the edge in noise isolation and comfort
TREBLAB Z7 Pro Wireless IPX4 and long battery with ANC IPX4; documented coating damage was noted in testing More than 37 hours with ANC activated — RTINGS, 2026 No companion app for sound tuning
Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024 Budget-oriented option with app EQ No IP certification; recommended by RTINGS for moderate movement 49 hours — RTINGS, 2026 Not a documented sweat-resistant design and less appropriate for intense training

Choosing by workout type

Walking, commuting to the gym and stationary cardio

These activities involve relatively little vertical shock. Comfort, low heat buildup and battery life matter more than extreme clamping force. Beats 360’s IPX4 claim is useful if you perspire, while the Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless may appeal if long-wearing comfort and isolation are your priorities. Keep ANC at a level that lets you remain aware of announcements and people around you.

Weight training and circuit work

Controlled lifting generally creates fewer sudden head movements than running. Choose a headband that does not slide when you look down, and test the fit while bending, lying on a bench and turning your head. Replaceable cushions are a practical advantage because repeated contact with sweat will eventually flatten or discolor pads.

Running, jumping and high-intensity intervals

These movements expose the main weakness of over-ears: inertia. Even a comfortable model can bounce or loosen when your head moves rapidly. If you still choose over-ears, favor the most secure fit you can achieve, avoid over-tightening to the point of pain, and test the headphones through short intervals before committing to a long session. For frequent running, ear-hook earbuds are often more stable; TechRadar’s 2026 running-headphone guide discusses that category. Open-ear and bone-conduction products can preserve awareness of outdoor surroundings, as covered by Woman & Home’s 2025 exercise-headphone guide.

Outdoor workouts near traffic

Strong isolation can hide a vehicle, cyclist or another person calling to you. Use an ambient or transparency mode where available, keep volume moderate and avoid relying on an IP rating as a substitute for situational awareness. Open-ear alternatives may be a better category fit when hearing the environment is part of the requirement.

Understanding sweat and water ratings

An IP code is written as “IP” followed by two characters. The first character concerns solids and dust; the second concerns water. In the models listed here, IPX4 means the product has a stated water-resistance level but no dust-protection rating supplied in the code. IP52 indicates a different combination of dust and water protection. Neither code tells you how a particular ear pad, hinge, charging port or headband will age under perspiration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • IPX4: protection against water splashes from any direction; not immersion-proof.
  • IP52: a dust-protection level plus limited protection against vertically dripping water when tilted as specified by the rating.
  • No IP certification: there is no standardized rating to use as a documented protection point. The Anker model in the RTINGS comparison falls into this category.

Sweat contains salts and other compounds that can degrade synthetic leather, adhesives and metal contacts over time. A manufacturer’s phrase such as “sweat-resistant” may be useful context, but RTINGS notes that such claims are not directly comparable across brands. Treat the rating as one input alongside fit, pad construction, warranty language and your cleaning routine.

Battery life: compare like with like

Battery numbers can describe a maximum with features disabled, a measured test result or a particular listening mode. Keep the qualification attached to each number:

Model and source Reported battery result How to interpret it
Beats 360 — Beats, 2026 Up to 32 hours Manufacturer-stated maximum; Tom’s Guide also reported 32 hours with ANC and Spatial Audio enabled
Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless — RTINGS, 2026 26 hours Figure from RTINGS’ workout comparison
Nothing Headphone (a) — RTINGS, 2026 79.25 hours Measured result in RTINGS’ testing; unusually high relative to the other entries
TREBLAB Z7 Pro Wireless — RTINGS, 2026 More than 37 hours Reported with ANC activated
Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024 — RTINGS, 2026 49 hours RTINGS’ reported battery figure; the model has no IP certification

If you use ANC, high volume, Spatial Audio or frequent wireless reconnection, expect shorter runtime than a manufacturer’s maximum in some models. A long battery does not compensate for a headband that moves during your workout, so rank stability and comfort first when the activity is demanding.

Fit-testing checklist before a hard session

  1. Set the headband evenly. Extend both sliders by the same amount so the earcups sit at the same height.
  2. Center each ear. Your ears should be fully inside the pads, without the cushion pressing on the outer ear.
  3. Perform movement tests. Turn your head left and right, look down, bend at the waist, lie back and perform several controlled hops.
  4. Check pressure after 10 minutes. A fit that feels secure but causes pain will not be sustainable. Reduce clamp pressure or stop using the model if you develop a headache or ear soreness.
  5. Test the controls. Confirm that play/pause, volume, ANC and transparency controls remain reachable without dislodging the earcups.
  6. Try your real workout briefly. Start with a short session and inspect the pads and skin afterward for trapped moisture or irritation.

Cleaning and pad-care routine

Air the headphones out after every sweaty session. Wipe exterior surfaces and pads with a soft, slightly damp cloth that follows the manufacturer’s care instructions, then let everything dry fully before charging or storing. Do not pour liquid onto the earcups, spray cleaner into openings or assume an IPX4 rating makes aggressive washing safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store the headphones where air can circulate rather than sealing damp pads in a gym bag. If the cushions become saturated, smell persistently, crack or lose their seal, replace them when compatible parts are available. Beats confirms that Beats 360 cushions are interchangeable; Tom’s Guide reported $49 replacement sets in 2026, but compatibility, stock and price can change.

When earbuds or open-ear headphones are the better answer

Choose a different form factor when the exercise itself conflicts with over-ear limitations:

  • Frequent running or plyometrics: ear-hook earbuds generally resist bouncing better than a conventional over-ear headband.
  • Heavy perspiration or outdoor rain: select a product with a clearly documented protection rating and read the warranty exclusions; do not infer swimming suitability from IPX4.
  • Need to hear surroundings: open-ear or bone-conduction designs leave the ear canal open and can make environmental awareness easier.
  • Glasses, helmets or tight headwear: test the complete combination, since temple pressure and helmet straps can make over-ear pads uncomfortable or unstable.

These are category decisions, not proof that over-ear headphones are unsafe. They reflect the mechanical demands of the activity and the listener’s need for awareness.

A practical buying decision

  1. Classify your movement. Pick over-ears confidently for light-to-moderate sessions; treat high-impact exercise as a fit challenge.
  2. Set a protection baseline. If sweat is unavoidable, prefer a documented IP rating, while remembering that it is not a complete durability guarantee.
  3. Choose the dominant feature. Beats 360 prioritizes workout positioning and replaceable cushions; Bose emphasizes comfort and isolation; Nothing emphasizes tested battery and stability; TREBLAB combines IPX4 with long ANC runtime; Anker’s Life Q20 2024 targets moderate movement and app EQ.
  4. Compare the complete cost. Include replacement cushions, current price, charging accessories and any required cable. The $349.99 Beats figure and $49 cushion figure were reported by Tom’s Guide in the U.S. in 2026 and may no longer be current.
  5. Verify the return and warranty terms. Confirm whether perspiration damage is covered before making exercise the primary use.

Bottom line for different readers

  • Best match for a purpose-built over-ear workout design: Beats 360, because Beats explicitly names running, training and workouts and lists IPX4 protection.
  • Best for comfort and isolation when movement is moderate: Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless, with the caveat that RTINGS found it less secure during high-intensity movement.
  • Best for exceptionally long tested battery life: Nothing Headphone (a), at 79.25 hours in RTINGS’ test, with less isolation and comfort than Bose in that comparison.
  • Best for IPX4 plus long ANC runtime: TREBLAB Z7 Pro Wireless, while accounting for the coating damage and lack of companion EQ app noted by RTINGS.
  • Budget-oriented moderate-movement choice: Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024, whose 49-hour RTINGS figure and app EQ are useful, but which has no IP certification.

For vigorous running, jumping or workouts where hearing the environment is essential, reconsider whether over-ears are the right category before comparing individual models. A secure, appropriately protected headphone that you can wear comfortably for the entire session is more valuable than the longest battery claim or strongest ANC specification.
